BLACKLAND- EXTREME HEAVY PSYCH (STONER ROCK)-Label:BLOODROCK The BLACKLAND musical idea was born in 2001 under the previous name of WIZARD (which is kept until 2005), with willer Donadoni (guitar/voice), Nicola "CYNAR" Rossi (drums) and Carlo Gagliardi (bass). Each one of them came from different musical bands playing other standards (HOPELESS, DIRTY POWER GAME, SAMA). The band is turned to exeperiments at the beginning: sounds of stoner and rock music are fused with the typical reflexive mysticism of doom, and its by those atmospheres that songs take their origin, by the extemporization and the convergency of each own personal background. Exhibitions are first characterized by a long and confused repertory, most of them took place in squats, occuped spaces and others underground spheres in Rome and in the rest of Italy (without producing any record or demo). The band goes on with its works of composing until it reaches a certain stylistic coherence, from which in 2005 the recording of its first full-length: EVIL OF MANKIND. During that period of work all members follow different projects in the mean time (such as the GRIMNESS, DPG, DOOMRAISER), which are characterized by differents styles but united in the same dispositions flowintogether. Nowadays, in 2006, the idea is evolving into the uninterrupted research of its own personal style of creating. Carlo bassist leaves the band in March 2007. The band stops for few months and in 2007, enters Daniale "Pinna" Amatori already drummer doomsters DOOMRAISER. With the new formation the band launch a new style sounds likely looking at space-rock. Culled from long-lost acetates and tapes, What On Earth spans home demos and studio recordings, including previously unheard songs as well as early renditions of material that appeared on their July 1969 swansong, If Only For A Moment. BLUE STRATOS-DIAMOND AFTERLIFE (GARAGE BLUES DUO) -Label:OFF THE HIP Stripped back Melbourne garage duo Blue Stratos pepper “Diamond Afterlife” with enough primal gems to dazzle the most demanding fencer of stolen jewels. Duos playing garagey blues can become samey after continual exposure. There’s plenty of light and shade, however, and Cobra is a pretty fair drummer into the bargain. “Uptown” has a genuine swing in the feel and some sharply serrated guitar. “Kick Your Ass” (their Oblivians cover) is a killer version but the real surprise is the steaming surf-tinged “The Dozens” which sounds like Link Wray on acid. BREADMAKERS- NIGHT OF THE COBRA ( R & B stompers) Label:OFF THE HIP The Breadmakers recipe (ouch) is timeless. Vocalist Lazy Dic sings rather than bawls and blows a righteous harp. If you’ll excuse a parochial Sydney reference, he sings a little like Continental Robert of the Dynamic Hepnotics with a touch more grit. Sonically speaking, Cajun Spice throws in a generous amount of keyboards, engine room duties are more than capably handled by Deadbelly Stilton (drums) and Cadillac Slim. Blacktop Brierley is a humdinger six-string strummer who pulls out some occasionally eccentric, tightly-wound balls of lead-pickin’ stonk.This band brings home the dough (groan) time after time on this album. It’s a relentless steamroller of suave. Even the Atkins diet couldn’t put the skids under these Breadmakers; their brand of Louisiana stomp is as crunchy as homebaked wholemeal. BRIDE JUST DIED- All Hallow’s Eve -Label:NDN The time has come to tell the tale - Bride Just Died's debut album is finally here - mummify your pets and daughters!Bride Just Died started in Birmingham, the UK, some 6 years ago. After many line-up changes, the band finally arrived in the shape of a three piece: Rob (guitar), Rich (drums + backing vox) and Checkley (bass + lead vox). Soon establishing themselves as a raw-as-hell punk ‘n' roll band, they entered the studio and emerged with the "We Are The Hungry" 7" EP (NDN 14). That session also produced a speeded up version of the Damned's classic "Suicide", which found its way onto the "It's A Damned Damned Damned World" compilation CD (NDN 12). Not long after all this, Rob stepped down from the guitar spot and was soon replaced by Tat. At the same time Checkley hung up his bass to focus on the vocal duties, and from then on Ivan appeared on the 4-string. Bride Just Died quickly grew into a monstrously tight live band. C.O.B- Spirit of Love(70s hippie)Label:BGO As many of you know, C.O.B. stands for Clive’s Original Band, and as you also might know, “Spirit of Love” was their debut album, originally released in 1971 by CBS. Clive (Clive Palmer) started out as one of the original members of the Incredible String Band. He played on their groundbreaking debut LP, and left the band shortly thereafter. But it was with C.O.B that Palmer made the best music of his career, while teamed up with top flight musicians Ralph McTell and Mickey Bennett. “Spirit of Love” has a hymal, rural English vibe. Palmer’s vocals are calm and soothing; tracks like ‘Music of the Ages’ and ‘Serpent’s Kiss’ are spellbinding, sounding hundreds of years old, and only improving with the passage of time. Many of the songs have exotic instruments (the harmonium, something called a dulcitone); the banjo instrumental ‘Banjoland’ has unexpected ocean wave sound effects. At times, Palmer and company sound completely lost in space—on the excellent ‘Evening Air,’ for instance. It’s this naive charm and willingness to sound different that makes “Spirit of Love” such a great album. Other tracks, such as the beautiful ‘Wade In The Water’ and ‘When He Came Hom’ seem to have biblical references embedded within the lyrics, and a strong gospel influence. C.O.B. hit a pastoral English country folk-psych sound that’s visionary and highly original. CD $10 SKU:19085
