AKBAYRAM, EDIP-ST- (70s Turkish fuzz) Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS Edip Akbayram's a frail guy who spent his childhood unable to walk, but once he grew up he was on Istanbul TV in a whitey-fro and knee length colored robes. Akbayram's voice is big & open, and it took him all across Turkey at the height of Anatolian psychedelia. This 1st album collects precious singles from 1972-74, with dark melodies that descend in loose spirals, seemingly forever. Tunes taken from mystic Sufi poets who played the baglama, but retrofitted with hard plowing electric bass lines, funky drums, fuzz-wah guitars and keyboards. Remastered sound, insert/booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records). CD $12 SKU:25155

ALEX- ST PLUS THATS THE DEAL (1976 TURK ROCK)Label:GERMANOFON His first two LP's from 1974 and 1976 on one CD, complete and with all original jacket artwork and lyrics. Now performs as Alex Oriental Experience. "A singer and multi instrumentalist from Cologne who released several albums which were strongly influenced by the ethnic music of Turkey. His first two albums are now eagerly hunted by collectors, as they featured a unique style of 'Turk-Rock' with stunning baglama solos (this is a kind of three-stringed Turkish guitar)! They were recorded with the help of Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit (possibly adding bass and drums on certain tracks?) at Can's Inner Space studio, so take note all you Can collectors!" (Cosmic Dreams At Play) and from elsewhere: “Magnificent Kraut meets Oriental albums by one of the considered pioneers of the genre. Members of Can participated in these first two records (including Jaki Liebezeit, Helmut Hattler, Horst Stachelhaus, and others). These two first records of Alex Wiska came with simply his name, Alex, and are very oriental/Turkish rock oriented. His later records under the name Alex Oriental Experience are much more space rock/kraut oriented. Many comparisons were made with the Turkish band Cem Karaca. Great saz tunes by Alex and good accompanied by some of the brightest names of German rock scene. Highly recommended... not to be missed!” CD $10 SKU:26214

ANONYMOUS/ J. RIDER -Inside the Shadow- (mid 70s melodic rock rarity)Label:AETHER Straightforward, melodic rock has never been so good. One of the best mid 1970's rock records out there, with nary a weak composition in sight. "The great irony? This private press album defines what mainstream rock should have been. Nothing pretentiously eccentric here, just excellent melodies and engaging songwriting throughout.” — Gerrard Winstanley. After the demise of Sixties garage psych legends Sir Winston & the Commons, writer/vocalist/guitarist Ron Matelic reformed his band into a jangly swirling blend of the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, and Buffalo Springfield with male and female vocals, electric 12-string guitar, lead guitar, bass, driving percussion and outstanding original songwriting. The sole Anonymous album, "Inside the Shadow,” was released in 1976 in a pressing of 300 copies. A second album of original material was recorded in 1977 after the band's name changed to J. RIDER, but it remained unreleased until a vinyl issue of 375 copies in the mid-90's. Both excellent LPs are now available on this one compact disc. Liner notes and band history by Ron Matelic himself. CD $12 SKU:27137

ASTRAL DAZE - VA VOL 1 (70 s Psychedelic South African Rock) - Label:FRESH This collection brings together rarities from artists we know (tracks from Abstract Truth, Suck, Otis Waygood, Freedom’s Children, John & Philipa Cooper, McCully Workshop, Third Eye, and Hawk), as well as others we’ve not heard before, like Omega Ltd., the Bats, the Fireflies, the Idiots, Tidal Wave, and the Invaders. Although the South African rock movement of the late sixties and early seventies was not a major commercial success, it's participants heralded an exciting new age in South African rock and started a movement aimed at changing the musical tastes of fans in a spectacular way. Stadium concerts became the vehicle for feeding the youth with heavier rock sounds, and behind studio glass were producers like Clive Calder, Billy Forrest, Graham Beggs and Selwyn Miller who acted as change agents to transform conventional pop into heavier 4 to 5 minute songs. The movement's struggle for recognition through airplay remained unanswered and only the true fans of rock knew about their existence. COMP CD $15 SKU:25183

ATTENTAT-PUNKHJÄRTA (70s punk wave band with new album) Label:BUSY BEE Attentat were pioneers in the first Swedish punk wave in the late 1970s, along with bands like Kriminella Gitarrer, KSMB, Göteborg Sound and Ebba Grön. After more than 40 years on the Swedish rock scene, Attentat has never felt more relevant. With their 2019 album 'Punkhjärta' (Punk Heart) producer
Mattias Glavå (Dungen, The Amazing, Ice Age and others) has carved out a cleaner more raw sound but the fighting spirit, energy and sing along refrains remain. Attentat are still set on changing the future without forgetting their past and in 2019 they are better, smarter, stronger and more fun than ever. They have nothing left to prove, but still do. The day our planet is flawless Attentat will quit. But that day seems far away. CD $15 SKU:25848

BILLYLEE JANEY -No Saints Ringin’ The Bells (classic hard rock from ex Truth and Janey guitarist)-Label:ROCKADROME Legendary Iowa Rock Hall of Fame guitarist Billylee Janey has been bending strings since the late 60s, and released his first single in the early 70s with his hard rock band, Truth and Janey. Since, he’s released more than fifteen albums and had guest appearances on many more, been elected to the Iowa Rock Hall of Fame, received a Grammy entry mention, appeared on stage with Buddy Guy and Little Ed, was featured in Bo Diddley’s backing band, and played more than 600 major shows in the USA and Canada. His recordings with 70s rock band Truth and Janey have been featured in several books on 70s hard rock and have achieved cult status. Billylee continues to write and release new material in the blues and classic rock genres and gig almost non-stop. Up next for Billylee is his fourth release for the Rockadrome label, “No Saints Ringin’ the Bells”, which hit the streets in the Spring of 2011. CD $10 SKU:26407

The opening track is the heaviest thing heard from Janey since his “No Rest for the Wicked” days! Once again, Janey and his power trio with monster skinsman Skip Lowe and bassist Dan Johnson deliver the high quality goods. This is an enhanced CD that includes a bonus video as well. BROWN, STEVE -BAND- SOUL FULL OF SIN (obscure 70s jazz rock) Label:SEELIE COURT 380 copy limited edition first pressings in mini card gatefold sleeves, from Glass Masters (not cdrs)Steve Brown formed this outfit in 1971, and they quickly developed a tight style of cool but potent jazz rock, characterised by lengthy powerful instrumental breaks and sax, and infectious beats. CHARGE (UK) -ST (Legendary heavy 1973 prog rock)Label:SEELIE COURT Legendary heavy progressive rock concept album that includes the epic side long 'Child Of Nations' suite, and unlike many anti-war songs band leader Dave Ellis had direct experience of the subject having been on active service with the British Army in the Far East. Dominated by Hendrix-esque lead guitar and powerful bass and drums, the original LP was privately issued in a plain white sleeve in 1973 apparently in 99 copies, and now finally sees a reissue. COOLEY MUNSON- In Debt (70s So Cal. hippie psych ) -Label:GUERSSEN Bill Cooley and Alan Munson were two friends in Santa Barbara, California, living their early 20s writing folk-rock songs for their pleasure. That was 1972, and they decided to put these songs into the studio, self-produce the album and press a tiny quantity of 500 pieces hoping it could help getting a contract with a major company. This never happened, as you would have guessed, and sure this fact helped making their sole album, In Debt, a major collectable item in the folk-rock and psychedelic rock listeners and collectors. Today, original copies of this record fetch quite interesting sums when changing hands in record fairs or internet auctions. Being a private pressing, you can easily imagine it's not a big production, but no care. This album has the right feel and you won't need anything else to make it one of your faves. All tracks are original compositions, and the style is very personal. It's folk-rock, but many tracks are quite psychedelic too, in their own way. But don't look close for influences, they will not come to mind that easily. Bill and Alan had their own psychedelic folk-rock style, and the raw, sometimes amateurish feel that these recordings have give the album the final distinctive touch. Never reissued before in any format, now here we come with a splendid reissue, with the collaboration of the guys. Remastered sound taken from the master tapes, CD version comes with booklet and outer slimcase. Alan Munson kept going the folk-rock way and released two solo albums during the '70s too, which we are also re-releasing along with In Debt. CD $10 SKU:25186

ELECTRIC FLAG --Best of the Electric Flag (1967 POST PAUL BUTTERFIELD-Label:FLOATING WORLD he short-lived but successful Electric Flag was formed in 1967 by guitarist Mike Bloomfield after he'd left The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, ostensibly to give original guitarist Elvin Bishop, in Mike's words, "A little space." Undoubtedly he had also become uncomfortable with Paul Butterfield's position as bandleader and was anxious to lead his own band. When Bloomfield left, he brought vocalist Nick Gravenites with him. The rest of the original group was a collection of seasoned professionals from some of America's most successful bands. Drummer Buddy Miles had done session work with Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett, bassist Harvey Brooks had been with Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Judy Collins. Keyboard player Barry Goldberg had previously played with Steve Miller and Mitch Ryder, Peter Strazza on tenor saxophone had also played for Miller. Trumpeter Marcus Doubleday had backed The Drifters, Jan And Dean as well as Bobby Vinton. Herbie Rich, a well seasoned session man, completed the ensemble on baritone sax . CD $10 SKU:26514

FIVE MAN ELECTRICAL BAND/ STACCATOS -First Sparks: The Anthology 1965-69-DBLLabel:PACEMAKER Everything offically recorded between 1965-1969 by one of the top Canadian bands of the era, with some extras! As the Staccatos, they had a dozen Top 40 singles — all composed, arranged, played, sang, produced, or co-produced by the group; they later went on to worldwide fame as Five Man Electrical Band, but this is where it all began. It begins with the independently released single 'It Isn't Easy, and runs through the band's Capitol Records singles 'Small Town Girl,' 'It's A Long Way Home,' 'C'mon Everybody,' 'Let's Run Away,' and their massive hit 'Half Past Midnight.' The 2xCD set includes the Staccatos LP, plus all their singles; a rare instrumental they recorded under the name The Smart Set; the first official Five Man Electrial Band LP; as well as the non LP singles 'Catch The Love Parade,' 'Walker Street,' 'Didn't Know The Time,' '(It Never Rains on) 'Maple Lane.' Also has five tracks featured on a Coca Cola promotional LP called "A Wild Pair" (shared with the Guess Who), and three previously unreleased tracks, among them a cover of Buffalo Springfield's 'Sit Down I Think I Love You.' It also has all six tracks from their final three Capitol Records singles: a total of 51 tracks, with the added bonus of a 16 page color booklet. This is the first compilation to include all the band's Capitol-EMI recordings; that and the multitude of rarities makes it difficult to resist.

GENESIS (COLUMBIA)- S/T (70s rock/psych)-Label:SONDOR This Genesis comes from Columbia, and its a shame they used such a common name, as their music is absolutely unique! Founded by Humberto Monroy (ex-Speakers) in the very early 70s, they released a bunch of lps, of which this is the second one. This same titled album, their second, was recorded in March 1974 and released by Famoso (a Codiscos sub-label). Unusual and charming sound in the folk, rock & psychedelic veins, but always with a wonderful Andinean folk feel. Most of the tracks are written by Humberto but the more famous number included on the album, which received a lot of radio airplay in Columbia at the time, was a chilling cover of "Como decirte cuanto te amo" by Cat Stevens. Also, the psychedelic sounding "Don Simon" was probably their major success.. This is the first ever reissue , and comes with a nice booklet w/linernotes and pictures, and great remastered sound. J. TEAL BAND - Cooks-reissue of 1977 private press hard rock album from South Carolina-Label:ROCKADROME digipack reissue of 1977 private press hard rock album from South Carolina, originally released on the Mother Cleo label. Well respected among collectors for it’s top notch guitar playing and clean undistorted jams. A real long lost gem from the 70s private press underground. “Surprisingly good, underrated small-town hardrocker cruising on a backbone of tight jams that enhance almost every song, with a guitar-playing that is Quicksilver-like in it’s probing flow. Billy Hardy’s lead playing is as good as anything I’ve heard on an Lp of this kind, and unusually varied. The band also offers up a long introspective Top Drawer-ish brooder, utilizing an odd psychedelic effect which again sounds like something from a late 1960s Bay Area album. This LP isn’t unknown, but I bet a lot of people out there will be surprised by how good it is” – The Acid Archives. Add this praise from the blogosphere, and one must conclude that this is an album of undeniable quality: "Hot Southern guitar-rock album that blows away everything else in the genre. It’s not “rural rock” at all. There’s a tad of funk influence, but certainly no country. The vocals are snotty and nasal, which actually gives the music a dangerous edge more genuine than the usual throaty he-man voices that go with this kind of thing. Lots of great lead guitar and a real backwoods sleazy vibe. You get the impression these guys’ days are numbered, and they play with that kind of urgency. In the meantime, you wouldn’t want them getting anywhere near your sister, but you’d be honored to let them borrow your guitar.” CD $15 SKU:26059

J.D BLACKFOOT- OHIO DREAM Label:LION Killer psych guitar, combined a strong British sound with the distinctive song-oriented California sound of Grateful Dead and Neil Young, two of the main inspirations for many an aspiring rock musician of the time.

However, despite the laid back rural West Coast sound that the band effortlessly cultivates, shades of UK progsters such as Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues often come to the fore revealing what is, in essence the group's true musical intentions. CD $10 SKU:27151

JOSIAH-PROCESSION(Blue Cheer style heavy psych)Label:HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS Reissue of Josiah's fourth album from 2009. "Those who've experienced Josiah's groove-heavy swagger know that it's the guitar of Mat Bethancourt in the starring role, but this trio relies almost as much on the backing rhythms on 'Procession.' Blink and you'll miss the first two tracks, 'Procession' and 'Broken Doll," both of which are under two and a half minutes, but for the other three cuts of studio material ('Thirteen Scene,' highlight 'Dying Day' and the more garage rock 'Dead Forever'), it's just as much Beacom and Beasley's show as it is Bethancourt's. That would be the end if not for the five live tracks from Josiah's Swedish run in 2007. Four out of the five - 'Looking At The Mountain,' 'Time To Kill,' 'Silas Brainchild' and closer 'I Can't Seem To Find It' - come from the band's final recorded full-length, 'No Time,' and only 'Malpaso,' reaches back further, having first appeared on the 2001 10" 'Out Of The First Rays.' Not that we needed it by this time, but these live versions are basically just further confirmation of what underground rock lost with Josiah. The crash-heavy shuffle blues of 'Time To Kill' alone are worth whatever they're asking for 'Procession.'" ~The Obelisk CD $10 SKU:25311

MCCULLY WORKSHOP INC-AGES (S.African 60's psych KINKS,YARDBIRDS, PRETTY THINGS style ) Label:FRESH In the early 70’s, the promise made by the improvisational bands in the late 60’s like Cream, Iron Butterfly, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and many others, had started to bear fruit. It was a time of rock music becoming really heavy and progressive, but also a time of the Singer-Songwriters and Folk Rock. Medieval themes á la Lord Of The Rings and ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ were the order of the day. Keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman had released an instrumental album about the ‘Six Wives Of Henry VIII’, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow had sang about ‘The Man On The Silver Mountain’ and Uriah Heep celebrated ‘The Magician’s Birthday’. When McCully Workshop used to perform live around that time, the set list would include their arrangements of classical pieces like Bach’s ‘Toccata in D Minor’, Grieg’s ‘Hall Of The Mountain King’ and Strauss’ ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ (better known as the theme to ‘2001: A Space Odyssey)’ alongside ‘Every Little Thing’ by The Beatles and ‘The Man From Afghanistan’ by Curtiss Maldoon. Quite an eclectic mix. The “Ages” album (EMI, 1975) was born from this mixture of elements. The album opener, ‘Avenue’ is a bass-driven rock track, which echoes ‘Salisbury’-era Uriah Heep, whilst ‘Carbon Canyon’ is an up-tempo Steve Miller Band-influenced blues boogie with rollicking piano and cool guitar licks from Richard Black, who had been in rock power trio Elephant, with George Wolfaardt (Abstract Truth) and Savvy Grande (Suck). When asked about his favourite song on the ‘Ages’ album, Mike McCully says without hesitation: ‘I Walked Alone’. “This song had very difficult drumming, and I was influenced by Jim Keltner at the time. And the drumming on ‘Guinevere’ features double-tracked triplets... I used to play this with four sticks (a la John Bonham) for audio and visual effect.” Includes seven previously unavailable bonus tracks, updated liner notes and photos. CD $12 SKU:25115

MCKAY -Tomorrow's Tomorrow (Low-key rural melodic guitar rock)- Label:OR Low-key rural melodic guitar rock with Ray Pierle. excellent songwriting and musicianship Indianapolis native Ray Pierle’s first release was the McKay LP in 1978, featuring his brother Glen and two other musicians. The band played live frequently in Indianapolis during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Pierle would later release two albums under his name, Time and Money in 1980 and Rhythm of the Highway in 1981. Once the McKay LP was discovered by private press rock collectors years after its release and became nw an expensive collector’s item, appreciated for West Coast sounding guitar and Neil Young-inspired late night wistfulness, other McKay recordings were released. "Tomorrow’s Tomorrow” was issued by OR Records in 1996, and became very difficult to acquire once OR went out of business. CD $10 SKU:27138

MCKENNA MENDELSON BLUES- No Substitute (bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968) -Label:PACEMAKER Another great album from Canada's legendary Paragon label, a set of super bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968; the band’s album “Stink” was received not just as a great album of electric blues, but as some sort of revelation when it appeared in the second half of 1969. Lead guitarist Mike McKenna spent time ('67-'68) in the Ugly Ducklings, but he had already developed a 'local hero' tag by playing hard electric blues as a member of the legendary Luke and the Apostles. Together, he and Joe Mendelson made arrestingly earthy music, which soon attracted another of Toronto's rock gods of the day, bassist Denny Gerrard from the Paupers, whose legendary talents had served him well on the stage of the Monterey Pop Festival, where his work with the Paupers was (and still is) considered a highlight. The material included on this disc, which was demo material that now the band claim was “bootegged” by the legitimate Paragon label (a little revisionist history, perhaps?), is arguably even more rare and interesting than that on their classic McKenna Mendelson Mainline "Stink" album. OUTCASTS/S.J. & THE CROSSROADS-Route 1966 (60s Texas rock and roll)Label:CICADELIC "The Outcasts (of San Antonio) whose signature song 'I'm In Pittsburgh (And It's Raining)' has been covered by numerous neo-60s bands and is just one of their 12 great recordings on Route 1966, and all of them have been re-mixed from the original four track masters for the first time. These recordings reflect the short-lived era, when the Farfisa or Vox Continental was a mainstay for a rock and roll band from Texas, just before the psychedelic music craze got underway, led by The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. Also included on this album is S.J & The Crossroads (of Beaumont) with six of their best and rarest tracks from 1966, issued together for the first time on CD." CD $10 SKU:26021

PETER FOLDY -Bondi Junction And Other Hits (70s melodic pop classics) Label:PACEMAKER A collection of melodic pop classics, including his number one Canadian hit 'Bondi Junction’ (a melody that is hard to get our of your mind), the catchy ‘Roxanne,' 'School of Love,' and 'Love City,' which sounds like it could have been recorded by the Bee Gees. Singer/songwriter Peter Foldy was born in Hungary and raised in Australia, where he befriended the brothers who later found fame as Bee Gees. In 1965, Foldy moved to Toronto and eventually studied film at York University. After his 1973 hit "Bondi Junction" fared well in both Canada and the U.S., Foldy signed with Capitol (for Canada) and Polydor (for the U.S.) and had additional success with the self-written ‘Roxanne' and the Bill Martin/Phil Coulter composition 'Julie Ann.' STUMPTONE- ST (SPACEY PSYCH) Label:TWO OHM HOP StumpTone defies labels, but is clearly in the psychedelic realm. What changes - quite drastically - from song to song (and even within songs) is the level of the music's aggression. Sometimes the music is heavy droning wall of sound psych, but most of the heavy music is pleasingly melodic and makes room for lots of freaky synth sounds, backwards loops, and wild voice samples. The lineup indicates a number of guitarists and the influences are many. The guitar parts can be fantastically interstellar. Space jams that recall early Pink Floyd but with a bit more drumming madness to accompany the guitars. When this band soars they burst through the atmosphere and the ride is hard but fun. But StumpTone has its quieter moments as well. Melancholy acoustic pieces are scattered throughout the disc, crosses between Nick Drake and the kind of bluesy tracks that tended to pop up on Pink Floyd albums. There's a gorgeous, but all too short, echoed slide guitar during one song. That it didn't continue for a while is my only real disappointment on the album. In summary, StumpTone will appeal to those who like both heavy tripped out psychedelia and quieter but still spacey psych.” —Aural Innovations #9 (January 2000) CD $10 SKU:27130

VOX DEI- Cuero Caliente! ( 70s Argentine power trio )Label:DISC JOCKEY (Argentina) "the power-trio Vox Dei is often regarded as one of the most important Argentinean bands; in 1973.Just after the release of their masterpiece album "La Biblia," the band re-recorded for the Disk Jockey label most of the songs from their debut album (which had originally been recorded for the now-bankrupt Mandioca label); the LP included rock numbers such as 'Reflejos' and 'Compulsión,' as well as great ballads like 'Canción para una mujer (que no está),' which had been released as a single; this classic of Argentinean rock is now available in an edition that includes both sides of their single from 1971 as bonus tracks. CD $10 SKU:27152

WILDEBEEST- Bushrock 1 (1981 S African prog)Label:FRESH Recorded in 1981, “Bushrock 1” is the sound of a truly African progressive rock band in full flight: thundering African percussion, hard rock guitars, swirling Celtic violin and soaring vocals all combine to form a heady musical brew. The "Bushrock" concept was ex Freedom’s Children drummer Colin Pratley's brainchild. On Wildebeest's live set “Bushrock 1,” the audience is advised to "settle back and relax"— then the music grabs you, throws you around, and does not let up through nine songs and nearly 45 minutes of adventurous rock. Take a sharp guitarist (Boet Faber), a thundering, driving bassist (Piet Botha), add an exuberantly talented drummer (Colin Pratley) and a rocking violin (Dave Tarr), sweeten with some lovely female vocals (Karlien van Niekerk), crank up the volume, and you’ve got the basis of Wildebeest's thundering, stampeding rock album. The songs are primarily driven by beat and rhythm—Piet's bass punctuates and emphasizes as it drives along, the rock steady and creative drumming is ever present, and the violin becomes an essential rock instrument. Then the guitar sears and soars. Masterful rock, with the great Colin Pratley flailing away on the drums. I think of it as Progressive Jungle Music.” The album was recorded live in 1981, and before that makes you pause, remember that the concept of energetic jungle rock music has rarely been better served before or since; the album features two different “covers” of Freedom’s Children tunes from their classic “Astra” album... not a surprise really, as Tarr and Pratley were both former members of that band.
