FLAMIN' GROOVIES-SUPERSNAZZ (1969 debut)-Label:TONEFLOAT he Flamin' Groovies' debut album went almost directly into the cut-out bins within a year or so of its 1969 release. Fortunately, the band survived the neglect heaped on that record—and in the ensuing years, Supersnazz has achieved an exalted reputation among not just Groovies fans, but lovers of rock & roll in general, having held up extraordinarily well across the decades, and still able to make its own case for greatness as an astonishing document of straight-ahead rock & roll circa 1969. It’s fully contemporary to its time (and, by extension, almost timeless), with none of the artificial period nostalgia (and parodying) that was already creeping into the "oldies" scene. It's also a lot of fun; in fact, based on the evidence, Supersnazz may well have been the most fun record of 1969. Roy Loney, Cyril Jordan, Tim Lynch, George Alexander, and Danny Mihm run through a quirky mix of Loney and Loney/Jordan originals and standards, encompassing styles from proto-'70s punk (want to bet the Ramones wore out copies of this album?) to '50s New Orleans R&B, country music, and even ragtime, and while a small bit of it is compromised by the presence of some too-prominent clarinet and saxophone, the whole record is a rollicking good time, made even better by the sequencing, which offers a full range of surprises, even on the fourth or fifth listen -- one can never settle in with this record before something weirdly wonderful comes along to draw the listener in yet another direction. From the fiery, Brian Jones-era Stones-style, fuzztone-driven opener 'Love Have Mercy,' the band shows what it can do in everything from straight-ahead boogie to slow ballads ('A Part from That') and '50s rockers ('The Girl Can't Help It,' 'Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu'), country (‘Brushfire'), and R&B, all done with a unique array of stylistic flourishes that made this one of the most original long-players of 1969. By the ninth track, the pounding, punk-driven 'Somethin' Else/Pistol Packin' Mama,' the whole album achieves a kind of otherworldly continuum, like something out of a strange and wonderful corner of the universe that -- though none knew it at the time -- pointed the way to a coming decade of achievement by the likes of the Ramones, Jonathan Richman, et al, not to mention the Groovies themselves. GENE CLARK & THE GOSDIN BROTHERS-ST (1967 stellar Byrds style) Label:FLOATING WORLD The first album that Gene Clark released after his departure from the Byrds followed very closely on the model of his earlier efforts on the Byrds' first two albums. His backing musicians included ex-bandmates Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke, as well as future Byrd Clarence White and Clark collaborator Doug Dillard, not to mention the Gosdin Brothers, whose harmonies resembled a rockier Everly Brothers and brought the sound very close to that of the Byrds. The album contains a number of fine pop-oriented tunes and stellar folk-rock/country-rock numbers (a year before the Byrds’ "Sweetheart of the Rodeo," which employed both White and Dillard) and established Clark as a major songwriter, rivaling his old band and often coming close to the fabness of the Beatles. Still, despite such solid songs and backing musicians, Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers failed to make much of an impact, perhaps due to its being released in the same week as the Byrds' "Younger Than Yesterday," itself a tour de force that cemented their influence. However, in the realm of Clark's recorded output, this album stands as one of the best, if not the best, example of how powerful a singer, writer, and bandleader he was. "You have the arrangements by Leon Russel, excellent backing vocals by the Gosdin brothers, fabulous guitars by Clarence White and Glen Campbell, and, of course, one of the greatest voices of his generation, Gene Clark. What else could you ask for?" CD $10 SKU:22187
THIRD RAIL-ID MUSIC (1976 NUGGETS stars) Label:FLOATING WORLD Reissue of their 1967 album with extra tracks. "The Third Rail are best remembered today because their closest brush with hit-single status, 1967's "Run Run Run," appeared on Lenny Kaye's pioneering original Nuggets compilation in 1972. But while that album was the shot that kicked off the great garage rock revival, the Third Rail's music was a far better example of the glorious products of the pop music factory that was the Brill Building rather than teenage rock & roll run wild and free. Group founder Artie Resnick was a seasoned pro in the music biz, having written "Under the Boardwalk" and "Good Lovin'," and vocalist and co-writer Joey Levine was a teenaged pop prodigy who (like Resnick) would later become a major player in Buddah Records' mighty bubblegum empire a few years down the line. But in 1967, Levine was just a bit too clever for his own good, which is a big part of the pleasure of the Third Rail's sole album. Like "Run Run Run," Id Music is filled with witty social commentary… and the songcraft is both clever and extremely pleasurable, especially on the baroque pop "The Invisible Man," the willfully goofy "She Ain't No Choir Girl," and the Madison Avenue takeoff "Dream Street." While Id Music's songs, production, and performances are all buffed to a high gloss, the craft and the intelligence of the music is a delight throughout, and its attempts at lyrical subversion only add to the fun…” CD $10 SKU:22185
VALENTI,DINO -ST (overlooked classic 60s psych)Label:FLOATING WORLD An overlooked classic of maybe the deepest 60's psychedelic/folk rock ever recorded. Born Chet Powers, Valente wrote the classic 60's hit ‘Get Together' and soon became a prominent figure in the summer of love in San Francisco he joined Quicksilver Messenger Service in their early days and re-joined later as lead vocalist and main songwriter composing most of the material on “What About Me" and “Just For Love." He also wrote the track 'Fresh Air,' the nearest thing Quicksilver ever came to having a hit single. This album is the only solo work he ever produced and he sadly died in 1994. Dino Valente's sole album recalls the one issued by another San Francisco artist signed to CBS in the late '60s, Skip Spence: quirky, lyrically vague, folky yet psychedelic, and nearly devoid of commercial potential in spite of its largely pleasant (if moody) melodies and textures.CD $10 SKU:22186
AYAHUASCA-Psychedelic Cumbias, Vol. 1(Rare 60s Peruvian psych/cumbia)Label:LION •Snazzy bi-lingual insert w/photos + info on the development of the Cumbias Psicodélicas sound•All tracks newly remastered for this vinyl release
Groove Club series, which it so easily could have been! This is stunning collection—which took more than fifteen years to put together—of hot, rare tracks that combine cumbia with psychedelic rock. Starting in the late 1960's, there was a boom of tropical music in Peru, both in Lima and the provinces. Cumbia Peruana merged this tropical sound with that of psychedelic rock. Aspects of cumbia were mixed with electric (often fuzz) guitar, played over Andean and jungle rhythms—this combination provoked an explosion of original music. An instrument to lead the way, usually from the introduction of the song; over this, hypnotic layers of keyboards and guitar with fuzz and wah wah; add simple bass-lines; and to top it off, syncopated rhythms from bongos, congas, huiros, cymbals, timbales, often played at breakneck speed. In the end, it's like a sonic cousin to Nigerian music: these musicians liked guitar, they had a fondness for echo, and they loved a murky high-octane jam. Fierce, funky and full of flavor! MACKAY,DUNCAN --Chimera (1974 Prog rock)Label:MISSING VINYL Limited edition, gatefold, deluxe 180g vinyl, from the original analogue master tapes, exact reproduction of the original first pressing. First time reissue of this 1974 debut album by ex Cockney Rebell/10CC keyboard player (he also played with Kate Bush and Camel), Duncan Mackay. It’s an epic prog rock album in the vein of Rick Wakeman, ELP and Patrick Moraz and is highly recommended for keyboard driven prog rock fans. Remember those heady days of the early 70’s, when a trio of keyboard wizards—Keith Emerson (ELP), Rick Wakeman (Yes) and Jon Lord (Deep Purple)—were winning all the polls and dominating the album sales? Duncan Mackay's “Chimera,” recorded in 1973/4 and forever forgotten by all but the most devout, is a brilliant slice of 70s progressive keyboard-based rock. All three of the wizards mentioned above are obvious influences, but McKay clearly stamps his own sound onto this three-track album. (only three tracks? well this was 1974, the era of 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' by Yes).” label says: “Chimera is Duncan MacKay's first album. It is considered to be a milestone in keyboard driven 70s progressive rock music. Chimera was originally released on the South African VERTIGO label in early 1974. Original copies are very sought after by collectors and are among the rarest and most expensive ones of the VERTIGO SWIRL/SPACESHIP label worldwide. After this album, Duncan MacKay moved to the UK and became famous for his participation in Baker Gurvitz Army, Colosseum II, Cockney Rebel, Camel, Budgie, Alan Parsons Project and even the first 3 Kate Bush albums. LP $25 SKU:20982
MOONRISES -Frozen Altars(avant psych) -Label:CAPTCHA Moonrises is the brainchild of Plastic Crimewave (a.k.a. Steve Krakow), Libby Ramer and Ben Billington. Their tremendous sophomore album "Frozen Altars" absolutely destroys the competition in the ring of avant-psychedelic bands. Wrap your bad-trip damaged brain around an album that continues to reinvent and expand with every rotation. Experience intense flashbacks of 1960's British pysch and 70's krautrock. Envision the sounds of the Soft Machine, the Dead C. and This Heat trapped in a droned-out noise chamber. Tiny Mix Tapes calls them "the newest addition to Chicago's vibrant psych scene, and they take you way beyond your average wanna-be psych band. Some of the best psych music you will hear, yep (Moonrises) will pretty much amaze you. " Don't hesitate, you will want to be the one telling your friends to take this trip.” LP $14 SKU:22503

ODYSSEY- -Setting Forth (One of the ten rarest psych albums from the USA)gatefold mini-LP slv Deluxe Ed. 2xCD Label:LION This is truly one of the pinnacles of underground psychedelic music, recorded in 1969, released in an edition of fewer than 100 copies, and impossible to find as it only came in a plain white cardboard sleeve; an incredible, musically accomplished, hard rocking album of originals that jumps right out of the speakers and grabs you, from it’s opening In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida-esque riffs right to the grooving end. The 24-page booklet that accompanies this two-disc set has the complete band history by Odyssey leader Vinny Kusy, as well as rare photos from his own archive. Bonus tracks on disc one are three “basement recordings” from the “Setting Forth” era. The second disc contains Odyssey “Live at Levittown Memorial Auditorium: 1974,” a live recording that was never really meant to be, recorded by Odyssey’s sound engineer on a portable cassette recorder. It is the only document of Odyssey in their progressive rock phase, just before sometime Odyssey keyboardist Tom Doncourt and band-member Fred Callan recorded their legendary Cathedral “Stained Glass Stories” album.•One of the ten rarest psych albums from the USA•Sleeve notes by the group's leader and keyboardist Vinny Kusy CD $16 SKU:15490
QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE- Carousel Ballroom, April 4th San Francisco 1968 DBL Label:BEAR Part of a series of live recordings unearthed after 40 years, this album is said to present an appearance by Quicksilver Messenger Service at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco on April 4, 1968, a month before the release of the group's self-titled debut album. Although earlier shows presented in the series demonstrated that QMS certainly were ready to record years before they did, this performance is recognizably one by the band that made the first album and its follow-up, Happy Trails, a group comfortable improvising for 12 or 13 minutes at a time on 'Who Do You Love' and 'The Fool.’ The second disc however is the real pull for Quicksilver fans as it contains just the one track of the band doing what they do best and what sealed their reputation as a live band. The disc is taken up with The Jam an extended piece which never outstays its welcome but which underpins the bands musical inventiveness and dexterity. To nit-pick, the April 4, 1968, performance by QMS actually occurred at the Fillmore Auditorium, not the Carousel. (it wasn't until July 1968 that promoter Bill Graham took over the Carousel and renamed it the Fillmore West.) That is assuming this concert even took place on April 4, 1968. On the recording, someone comments that it's Easter Sunday; April 4, 1968, was a Thursday. Easter Sunday 1968 occurred on April 14. QMS did not play a show on April 14, 1968, but they did play at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on the night of Saturday, April 13; maybe this is actually that show? Still, it is great live QMS. CD $10 SKU:21599
QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE -Live at the Filmore 4th of Feb 1967- DBL Label:BEAR The second in a series of rare live recordings by the Bay Area rockers. This 1967 recording contains many highlights including superb versions of 'You Don't Love Me' and 'A Fool for You'. Also includes 'Gold and Silver', 'Walkin' Blues', 'I Hear You Knocking' and 'All Night Worker' and shows the band were flexible and able to put together a set that highlighted their musical dexterity. While the sound quality isn't the best and seems to be in mono, there are nice things to be found here. The band's then line up was David, Greg, John and Gary with Jim Murray who left before the first album. This disc also has guest appearances from Nick Gravenites who appears as a guest vocalist on 'Walkin’ Blues' and 'Year of the Outrage' while Dino Valente shows up for 'A Fool for You' and 'I Can't Believe It.' CD $10 SKU:21600

JOHN BASSMAN GROUP- Filthy Sky( Psych prog Airplane style 1970)-Label:MISSING VINYL Excellent European psychedelic progressive album, sung in English with Jefferson Airplane- like female vocals and great fuzz guitars. John Bassman Group was a late 60s Dutch group, that recorded their only album in Germany on the A.S.P. label in 1970. Five years after this album, two of the group members (Guitarist John Theunissen and 'Bassman' Theo Wetzeis) achieved international fame with the group Pussycat. Limited, deluxe exact reissue on 180g vinyl, Expertly remastered, First ever official exact reissue. LP $22 SKU:20889
PIAZZA,ARMANDO - Suan (rare 1972 ACID PSYCH)-Label:MISSING VINYL Singer-songwriter Armando Piazza from Naples was joined by renowned US guitarist Shawn Phillips on bass, acoustic and electric guitar for this rarity, originally released on the obscure Black Beautiful Butterfly label in 1972; since it was sold only at concerts and by mail, it was even then difficult to find. And what a pity! Acid-psychedelic ballads in English, with bursts of fuzz guitar and excellent use of electric instruments as well as abundant acoustic guitar (the good people at Missing Vinyl say that the fuzz bass on ‘The House on the Hill’ will blow your mind and… speakers away)! This is an album considered to be one of the best, and is certainly one of the rarest European psychedelic albums, with original mint condition copies going nowadays for 1,000+ Euro. A heavy, yet subtle record, folky, with oddly inflected vocals and deliciously crunchy guitar. Limited edition, deluxe 180g vinyl, in a heavy deluxe double gatefold cover that is a replica of the complex original jacket. LP $26 SKU:21086

EMBER POP 69-74- VA Rainy Day Mind ( 60s ) -Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE Rainy Day Mind” is the first of two volumes surveying Ember’s pop repertoire from 1969 until the label’s demise at the end of the seventies. It comprises 21 tracks by artists ranging from obscure American singer Polly Niles to the internationally famous P J Proby, as well as ill-fated actor Alan Lake, Irish vocalist Lee Lynch, French pop star Black Swan and fuzz guitar-toting soul band Milt Matthews Inc. A clutch of projects including The Good Vibrations, The Good Ship Lollipop and Rusty Harness came to Ember courtesy of producer Mike Berry. The founding of US outlet Paramount-Ember in 1974, headed by music business veteran John Madara, brought albums by Denny Doherty (formerly of The Mamas And The Papas) and British all-girl glam rockers Mother Trucker into the fold. What these disparate sources all offer are fine performances of strong songs. Nor is there any shortage of collectables, topped by Davey Payne & The Medium Wave’s ‘A Walk In The Sunshine,’ which commands £50, and Blue Beard’s eponymous album, which only reached test pressing stage (£200), from which we have salvaged ‘Baby I Need You.’ Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging COMP CD $6 SKU:16376

OUR BRILLIANT CAREERS -Cherry Red Rarities 1981-83-Label:CHERRY RED Cherry Red carved out an odd niche for itself apart from the general post-punk flow, thanks largely to eccentric A&R man Mike Always, whose tastes leaned towards melody, Englishness, and the 1960’s. Cherry red became a home for the dashing, debonair whimsy of he Monochrome Set, the mopy bedsit introspection of Eyeless in Gaza, jazzy-folky singer-songwriters Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt (separately and together as Everything But the Girl), and the Television/Velvets descended, plangent splendor of Felt. Although “Pillows and Prayers” is the best-known sampler of the label, its precursor “Perspectives and Distortions” (1981) includes many non-Cherry Red artists, which makes it very interesting; and “Our Brilliant Careers” (2003) scoops up archival arcane. It includes rare tracks by successful Cherry Red artists like Everything But The Girl (plus solo material from both Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt), The Nightingales and The Monochrome Set, plus many more. Most people probably know Five Or Six from their off-key but charming opener 'Portrait' from “Pillows and Prayers”; here we have six like low-key and absorbing tracks from them, most of which have never been on CD: 'Think' and 'Theme' are instrumentals that will surprise a few. There are also three early songs by Ben Watt described modestly by himself as 'dreary and tuneless'. Beautiful instrumental version of 'The Thousand Guitars of St. Dominiques' by the Fantastic Something ends up as the most surprising track—a high point of the collection.” Impressive and intriguing archive collection of rare recordings. PEOPLE! LET'S FREAK OUT! - 5CD BOX SET PLUS 88 PAGE BOOKLET!-First ever box set anthology of Ireland's 1960s rock music scene.Label:PARTICLES Particles presents the first ever box set anthology of Ireland's 1960s rock music scene. Only two long-out-of-print compilations have ever emerged to profile Ireland's rock roots, making this anthology doubly inviting. From the R&B/blues scene in Belfast to the late 1960s psychedelia of Dublin, People! Let's Freak Out reveals a wider account of the beat scene, and it's transition into psychedelia and blues rock. While Ireland has never been given equal acclaim to that of it's neighboring England, it nevertheless produced some of the most iconic and influential bands of the period. As Van Morrison and Them were leaving Belfast for London, a slew of new hopefuls arrived to establish their own niche under the nose of the dominant showband scene. Compiled here, are 125 original recordings featuring various groups from Eire and Northern Ireland, some of whom went on to huge success in the 1970s. From Ian Whitcomb to Eire Apparent, The Bye-Laws to the Belfast Gypsies and Gentry to Sugar Shack, People! Let's Freak Out is a fascinating account of Ireland's more obscure and vibrant music scene of the 1960s. Spanning five discs with rare and previously unreleased recordings, a plethora of memorabilia and expansive liners housed in an 88-page, full-color booklet, People! Let's Freak Out offers an excellent companion to similar anthologies such as Nuggets, Rubble, and Buried Alive. COMP CD $38 SKU:21251

R&B SPOTLIGHT #60-R&B and/or pop hits of 1959- DOUBLE CD Label:Fantastic Voyage 60 tracks by various artists selected from the US charts of 1959. All of the songs were R&B and/or pop hits and many have become classics of the genre. The artists include such legends as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, the Coasters, Ruth Brown, Lavern Baker, Nat King Cole and Sarah Vaughan. The collection, including full details of the original label issues, is the second of an ongoing year-by-year series representing the Rhythm & Blues charts. The informative booklet notes are authored by respected Echoes/Record Collector journalist Mike Atherton. This 1959 installment in the year-by-year R&B Spotlight series sees the increasing popularity of Rhythm & Blues, with many of the entries also crossing over to the pop charts. The R&B chart mixed successes from both one-hit wonders and fifties stars. R&B with the Rock and Roll beat was represented by Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Lloyd Price and Little Willie John. Harmony vocal group sounds abounded with notable sides from the Flamingos, the Skyliners, the Crests, the Five Satins and Richard Barrett with the Chantels. Uptempo group items, often with a comedy slant, were very popular and the Coasters, the Clovers, the Cadillacs, the Accents and the Genies are amongst the excellent selections here. The whole Twist craze had it s beginnings in this year with the release of the original version written and recorded by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. Ruth Brown, Lavern Baker and Clyde McPhatter pointed the way for the future direction of R&B with their polished, New York-produced recordings. Bluesier items still appeared in the charts with winners from Jimmy Reed, Little Walter and Lightnin Slim. Instrumental charters included catchy items from Dave Baby Cortez, the Spacemen and Paul Gayten. Tremendous tracks including classic songs like ‘Kansas City,’ ‘Sea Cruise,’ ‘Charlie Brown,’ ‘The Twist,’ ‘Since I Don’t Have You’ and ‘Love Potion No. 9’, all included here. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging COMP CD $10 SKU:19067
