J.RIDER- NO LONGER ANONYMOUS(1976 Acid Archives fave!)Label: MACHU PICCHU Officially licensed from the group, here's a remastered CD with the entire 'Lunar Dust' sessions as bonus tracks, plus sleeve notes by Aaron Milenski (co-author of 'The Acid Archives'). Hot on the heels of the reissue of Anonymous' classic album 'Inside The Shadow', Machu Picchu reissues their elusive and legendary follow-up. After the 1976 release of 'Inside The Shadow', the group decided to change their name to J. Rider (after the second cut on the Anonymous LP) and pursued a similar rich vein of impeccable songwriting, but this time adding more hard rock to the mix, resulting in a fantastic sounding album that sadly went unreleased at the time. The excellent reissue label OR Records already put out a small edition in 1996, but now there's a deluxe edition of this gem, complete with new sleeve art. It also happens to come with an entire unreleased 10-song album, recorded in the '90s by the group's visionary songwriter Ron Matelic and featuring most of the members of Anonymous. LOVE HIT ME!- VA DECCA BEAT GIRLS 1962-Once the British pop boom took hold in the wake of the Beatles in 1962, Decca compensated for their Fab fumble by signing a lot of acts, including a bunch of female singers. Ace's 2016 compilation Love Hit Me! Decca Beat Girls 1962-1970 chronicles a lot of these signings, including such stars as Lulu, Marianne Faithfull, and Twinkle (the latter's "Golden Lights," later covered by the Smiths, is featured here), but the fun of the collection is how it rounds up singers who didn't enter the history books even if they happened to have hits at the time. There are some sonic constants -- big beats, blasts of brass, swirls of strings, tambourines out of Tamla, fuzz guitars, a transatlantic dilution of the Wall of Sound that remains potent -- so this holds together, but what's fun is digging out particular favorites. Beverley's "Where the Good Times Are" contains an insistent blissed-out R&B rush, the Orchids bring the Ronettes to Britain for "Love Hit Me," the Vernons Girls' "Dat's Love" is a bizarre sendup, and Sandra Barry & the Boys' "Really Gonna Shake" is an absolute raver, a single that's worth the price of admission. Other songs provide a similar kind of buzz, and the reason why Love Hit Me! is worth a listen is how the whole package provides a vivid flashback anchored by enduring pop 45s COMP CD $16 SKU:18416

BEDLAM -DEMOS ANTHOLOGY 1968-1970-Label: ACID NIGHTMARE BEDLAM and its earlier incarnations (Ideal Milk, Big Bertha, etc.) was an hotbed for launching the career of superstar drummer Cozy Powell (RIP), who later played with such major Hard Rock acts as Whitesnake, Rainbow and Black Sabbath. In this earlier stage, we can hear the fantastic guitar playing of Dave Ball very influenced by Cream/Clapton, his brother Denny on bass and Cozy on drums. In fact this early incarnation of Bedlam called Ideal Milk was almost a tribute to Cream. Moving on later, singer Ace Kefford enters the picture for a short stint with the band where they change the band name to Ace Kefford Stand. Ace was the ex-bass player of the Move. The B side of the record has the Big Bertha demos which had different singers including Denny Ball which also sang on Ideal Milk. The style is still similar to Cream/Jeff Beck Group, sometimes with an heavier edge predicting what was going to come after 2 years (meanwile Cozy was with The Jeff Beck Group and Dave Ball joined Procol Harum). Some of the standout tracks here are "Ring of Fire" with Frank Aiello singing, the same that sang on the only album in the BEDLAM history recorded in 1973, "Funky Woman" which was an amazing track on a B side of a Big Bertha single that gained some momentum in Germany, "For your Love", a brilliant cover of the Yardbirds classic with Ace Kefford singing and the hard edged "Munich City", recorded in Germany in a tape recorder before one of the shows of the Big Bertha German Tour in 1970. Reissue limited to 400 copies with insert that includes detailed song liner notes written by Denny Ball and rare pics. TWILIGHTERS -NOTHING CAN BRING ME DOWN (60s Texas garage psych monster) Label:MILKCOW This wonderful reissue comes with a '60s styled company-sleeve and a postcard. Back on 7-inch, here's a brain melting Texas garage psych monster from 1968. 'Nothing Can Bring Me Down' became an instant cult hit when it started appearing on garage punk comps, and Pussy Galore and others bashed out their cover versions. The Twilighters recorded this sole 45 at a club named Mark VII, also the name of the record label. When the guys entered the recording space they only had one original song, the moody garage ballad 'I Need You'. Front man Jay White wrote 'Nothing...' on the spot, since the single also needed a flip. However, the result, a fuzzed up mixture of psych à la Hendrix and Cream, and '60s punk, was so exciting that it became the A-side. 45 RPM $14 SKU:18372
