BORN LOSERS- CYCLE GUITARS (Davie Allen style)-Label:MEAN DISPOSITION In these times of copious record releases, it was sort of strange that the Born Losers -a popular and already veteran band, with three excellent and successful singles under their belt- had still not waxed an album. It was not a matter of indolence, since their members were involved in all sorts of side projects, and their first LP confirms that the Losers were getting ripe for top-rank R'n'R. The results are exceptional indeed. Far from their early influences -namely, the sound of Davie Allan & The Arrows-, the band retains its peculiar sixties flavour, but their references have increased. The clear Arrows influence from their beginnings has now been replaced by ideas from the Challengers or the sound of the Ventures in their late Dolton records/early Liberty waxings: raw R'n'R, allied with pop melodies, jazzy touches and film music, without ever falling into corniness. The Born Losers are emerging as clear winners with this latest offering. CD $8 SKU:20655

CAL - Homegrown (60s/70s influenced psych hard-rock) -Label:OUT-SIDER Totally under the radar US private pressing from 1982. 60s/70s influenced psychedelic hard-rock full of distorted guitar and freaky synths with some mellowed-out folky moments. File next to other psych misfits such like T Kail, D.R. Hooker, Marcus, Michael Angelo…

Cal - also known as “Cal Rock&Roll” - was a band formed in the mid-70s in New York by some veteran musicians from the club scene: Larry Calabrese on guitar & vocals, Andy Barone on bass, Jerry Joly on drums / vocals and Jeffrey Gaer on keyboards. Famous for their powerful live shows – one of their stellar moments was opening for Leslie West & Mountain - , Cal secured a faithful fan base, especially among the biker crowd.
“Homegrown” was released in 1982 in a edition of 2000 copies, most of which were discarded due to pressing faults. Also, the album mastered at lower speed. Soon after, Larry met Todd Rundgren at a recording studio and he expressed interest in the band and some of their songs. Famous record label Sugarhill were also interested in adding Cal to their roster but nothing came of it in the end. So “Homegrown” vanished into obscurity until some original copies were discovered by psych dealers and collectors in the 90s.

CEM KARACA -Kardaslar 1974 (TURKISH GUITAR ROCK PIONEER 1960s and 70s) Label:GUERSSEN Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbul’s music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet’s broiling righteousness and also his listeners’ common ground with their elders in Turkey’s history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karaca’s own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then-current project Dervi an. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kelly’s flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric ba lama, and you’re ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem. SALE! -Label: AUDIO ARCHIVES On CD-format, here's an ultra rare album recorded in 1973 and originally pressed on the Deroy customs label in a tiny quantity and issued in a bizarre, oversized custom-made sleeve. The album contains 11 home-grown songs featuring strong lead and backing vocals atop acoustic and electric guitars alongside piano and harp. Some songs, f.i. the head-weaving 'Smashed-out Carpet' have a prominent eastern, tripped-out psych feel throughout, whilst others straddle jug-band and folk areas. The Creamers were also one of the first L.A. punk bands to feature "girls on guitar". Today it's taken for granted that woman can and do play guitar, bass and drums in rock bands - but in 1986- it was an anomaly.
