NEW STUFF, RESTOCKS, AND DISCOUNTS:

SOUL EXPLOSIVES-Tryin' To Get Down/Ain't No Sunshine-Label:BIG CROWN "Big Crown Records is proud to present a reissue of the highly sought-after, very rare, and only release by Texas funk band, The Soul Explosives. Active in 1971 and 72, The Soul Explosives were a high school group from Kingsville, TX led by high school senior Skip Frazier. Their main goal was to play a neighborhood known as the 'The Cut' in nearby Corpus Christi, where there were a number of Soul & R&B clubs. They paid for the recording and pressing of the 45 which was done by a tiny local Tejano studio/label, Bormeh. Copies of the record were given to friends and sold at shows. In '72 Skip decided to leave the group to pursue his college studies and they disbanded not long after. The A Side 'Tryin To Get Down' is a lo-fi funk gem with all the makings of an underground classic. Driving drums and blown out vocals somewhere between encouraging and liberating are sure to peak funk fans ears. The B Side, an absolutely smashing cover of 'Ain't No Sunshine', is nothing short of a must have. The Soul Explosives nearly instrumental cover might just be the toughest version on a 45. Another Big Crown sureshot." 45 RPM $12 SKU:17825

DAVIS, BETTY-The Columbia Years 1968-1969-Label:LITA One can hardly imagine Prince, Erykah Badu, or Outkast without the influence of Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music. Betty penned the song 'Uptown' for The Chambers Brothers and wrote the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending DIY ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal. In 1968, she married Miles Davis and quickly influenced him on the magic of psychedelic rock along with introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -- personally inspiring the classic album, Bitches Brew. Miles and Betty fans have long debated the truth of a near mythological session recorded in Studios B and E at Columbia's 52nd Street Studios on May 14th and 20th, 1969. The landmark session was produced by Miles and Teo Macero and featured Betty on vocals, accompanied by Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, guitarist John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock on keys, and Dylan/Miles session bassist Harvey Brooks. Other players included bassist Billy Cox (Band of Gypsys), saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and organist Larry Young. Now, Light In The Attic, with full support from Betty herself, presents these recordings to the public for the very first time. These historic sessions -- never heard, never bootlegged -- predate Miles' revolutionary album, Bitches Brew, and are the true birth of Miles' jazz-rock explorations, along with the roots for Betty's groundbreaking funk that came years later, starting with her self-titled debut in 1973. While, ultimately, these recordings would go unreleased for nearly half a century, they would greatly shape each of their careers. The vibe is intrinsically unique, fresh, and futuristic -- jazz heavyweights playing psychedelia, rock, and jazz-fusion long before the term became commonplace. The songs include Betty originals and covers of classics by Creedence and Cream. The concepts explored on these previously unheard sessions fueled concepts that wouldn't be fully realized until years later with Miles' seminal On The Corner. Additionally, included here is the first time rerelease of a 1968 Columbia single, recorded in October 1968 at Columbia Studios in Los Angeles. The session was produced by Jerry Fuller and featured South African maverick Hugh Masekela on trumpet and arrangements, plus members of jazz-funk pioneers The Crusaders -- including trombonist Wayne Henderson and pianist Joe Sample. All tracks previously unreleased (except track B5/8). Production by Miles Davis & Teo Macero with performances from Hugh Masekela, Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience), John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Harvey Brooks, Wayne Shorter, Billy Cox (Band of Gypsys), Larry Young, and members of The Jazz Crusaders. Remastered from the original analog master tapes.New interviews, rare photos, and unseen historical documents from the Teo Macero archive." CD $18 SKU:17877

LIGHTDREAMS -Islands In Space (70s psych)Label:Got Kinda Lost Records ". . .we can make [enough] progress inside our heads and the heads of our friends to lay the foundations of an intergalactic life more meaningful than our earthbound condition . . ." --John Peel, International TimesFirst reissue; remastered sound. Includes full-color booklet containing informative liner notes by collector Jack D. Fleischer prepared from artist interviews, as well as full lyrics and rare photos. Mirroring the sentiment of the prescient UK radio legend in his Vibrations column for the International Times in the '70s, LightDreams leader Paul Marcano took one step beyond his intimate colleagues and chose to spread his ideals concerning peaceful outer-space colonization to all with open ears. Islands in Space, dotted with acoustic jams, backward guitars, lyrics alluding to the British progressive era, smoking-hot electric leads, synths galore, and the dreamiest of melodies, is both Marcano's love letter to the work of science-fiction author Gerard K. O'Neill and the psych-tinged folk explorers who came before him such as McDonald and Giles. Originally privately issued in 1981 in an edition of 1,000 copies, Islands in Space explores space travel and cosmic ideology in a sci-fi psych odyssey and is filled with atmospheric, lysergic creations atop a hybrid of sounds from the cosmic psych/progressive folk/new age spectrum. Home-recorded (yet hi-fi), Islands in Space carries a singular quality, defies easy categorization, and has long been savored by collectors of otherworldly joys. This singular, beatific work now has another chance to shine from Earth's surface to the outer reaches of the galaxy. PINK FAIRIES- Do It WAREHOUSE FIND- Label:Total Energy ONE COPY ONLY . Place any of the first tracks from this compilation next to anything of the White Panther MC5's Kick Out the Jams and you find the material uniquely mated for message and visceral rock energy. This compendium of live recordings from 1969-1971 includes two versions of "Do It!," covered by Henry Rollins on his first solo album. While these '60s superstars played as part of huge, outdoor festivals, the Pink Fairies denied all pretense and jammed outside, entertaining for free. Twink (ex-Pretty Things), drummer and vocalist for this most idealistic of the era's hard rock acts, wrote liner notes for this album chronicling the hippie philosophy of this time period and its decline on many levels. CD $10 SKU:12262

PIP PROUD - A FRAYING SPACE w 3 bonus tracks, lyrics, 20 page booklet -Label:EM RECORDS (JAPAN) AN Australian outsider, with his untutored and uninhibited singing style, his primal guitar playing, his resolutely personal vision captured on recordings from 1967 to the early '70s -- except that, unlike most outsiders, he was loved and accepted, with two of his three album releases on a major label, with frequent television appearances and coverage in music magazines. Heralded in his native land though he was, he maintained a low profile from the early '70s, never made an impact overseas, and his recordings have been difficult to access. This collection has been selected by Proud's biographer David Nichols and will engender a new appreciation of Proud's music. Considered by some as a sort of Antipodean Syd Barrett, listeners will hear that Pip was clearing his own private and primal path, more poet than pop star, despite the media attention. Other than one Velvets-style band track, all songs here feature Pip solo, some with appealingly primitive overdubs. Fans of ramshackle, oddball, weirdo portastudio, lo-fi bedroom pop of the '80s, '90s and beyond, whether of the NZ, UK or U.S. varieties, will find a precursor here. CD includes with three bonus tracks and features a 20-page booklet with liner notes by David Nichols as well as Proud's lyrics. CD $19 SKU:16095

POP MUSIC TEAM - Society Is A Shit ( ultra rare Mexican 60s psych ) Paper mini slv replica - Label:VAM MEXICO Pop Music Team were among the first psychedelic bands in Mexico, writing original material influenced by Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, and the Doors (they even opened for the Doors at the Forum in Mexico City). This is a reissue of their legendary unreleased album, recorded for Orfeon in April 1969, with killer fuzz guitar and organ, mostly sung in English. This music should be known to all psych music heads, but it isn’t: so what happened? It’s simple. A demo recording of the band’s track ‘Tlatelolco 68’ was broadcast on the radio in 1969. The Mexican government heard the track, and immediately quashed the release of the album; their objection: the song described the brutal repression of the student movement in Mexico (students were slaughtered at La Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, Mexico City). For a long time, about 36 years to be precise, no one knew that an entire album had been recorded, or where to find the masters. But here it is, psychedelic garage jams with sweet fuzz and farfisa, including ‘Tlatelolco 68’, which turns out to be a 10-minute freaked out long jam. Sure, the cover art looks like a bubble gum packet (there was no original jacket art, since the album was never released), but don't let that or the band name scare you. This is wonderful stuff! CD $12 SKU:15123

POPPEES -Pop Goes The Anthology ( POWERPOP ) -Label:BOMP (available only thru Bomp until April 25th ) The Poppees were one of the creators and the embodiment of what soon came to be known as the "Power Pop" sound of the late 70s. This long overdue anthology finally gives this notable and highly underrated band its due, elegantly chronicling the Poppees short but influential role in the history of the New York New Wave scene of the late 70's. While anchored around their two classic Bomp singles, "If She Cries/Love of The Loved" (the latter track produced by Craig Leon of the Ramones fame), and "Jealousy/She's Got It" (produced by Cyril Jordan of the Flamin' Groovies), "Pop Goes The Anthology" features never before released recordings, including demos, early live recordings, and culminating with a rip-roaring live performance at CBGB. It is complete with liner notes and unpublished photos. "After all, what would be more punk at that time than being in the Poppees - a band that emulated the early Beatles, from their moptops to their Cuban heels?" - WFMUFormed in In the mid-'70s in New York by Bob Waxman, Arthur Alexander, Paddy Lorenzo, and Donny Jackrel, later replaced by Jet Harris. Formed in London in 1963 by Phil May (lead vocals) and Dick Taylor (guitar) The Pretty Things rode the crest of post-Beatles British Invasion bands with an unrivaled reckless attitude. Along with The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and the Yardbirds, the Pretty Things would help make fashionable the raunchy, R&B version of English rock 'n' roll that was about to change popular music forever. Still considered by many as the original bad boys of rock 'n' roll (first English band to get busted for drugs) the Pretty Things are also the most unheralded of their peers. Especially in America. PROMISE- ST ( 80s Beatlesque power pop ala Badfinger, Big Star, early Cheap Trick, Emitt Rhodes, The Raspberries, Liverpool Echo, The Scruffs, Shoes, Dwight Twilley Band, etc. ) w liners -Label:GOT KINDA LOST RECORDS (SPAIN) First reissue of the privately pressed 1980 self-titled debut by Colorado power pop band Promise. "An exciting, terrific British Invasion-styled guitar pop album full of catchy, memorable hooks, displaying a tougher, 'rock' edge than most of its ilk and some excellent softer songs. Equally recommended to power pop and '60s rock fans." --Aaron Milenski, The Acid Archives If you're continuously searching the margins for lost artifacts of the pop pantheon, you can find your daily dose in late period exponents of pure, lean, Beatlesque power pop band Promise. Originally issued in 1980 on the Boulder, Colorado, area band's own Cumulus label, their eponymous debut is filled with melodic, beatific blasts of pure pop, replete with ringing, jangly guitars and rollicking crunch. Co-led by singer-songwriters and guitarists Curt Mangan and Danny Mey -- with aid provided by the just-right rhythms of bassist Randy Jones and drummer Gary York -- the group created an album with precious little allying it to the punk-inspired power pop or prescient new wave of the time, instead choosing to hone in on a classicist pop sound highly indebted to those famous moptops from Liverpool. Abetted by the fact that some of the group's members had been playing together since their teenage combos of the mid '60s, the album carries an out-of-time flair across surging rockers and mournful balladry. Got Kinda Lost Records is ecstatic to give this benchmark of privately pressed power pop another chance to shine with this first ever reissue. Includes exhaustive liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Ugly Things Magazine) culled from interviews with Mangan and Mey. RIYL: Badfinger, Big Star, early Cheap Trick, Emitt Rhodes, The Raspberries, Liverpool Echo, The Scruffs, Shoes, Dwight Twilley Band, etc. CD $17 SKU:16561

A John Peel favourite from the early eighties, TV Smith's Explorers never quite made the big time, but just listen to this album... they really had something! Forget the patchy production and mediocre musicianship, this is the thinking man's punk. Traversing the extremes of emotion from depression ('The Unwelcome Guest') to ecstacy ('I Am Your Servant'), this album is suffused with a timeless vigour. The title track is audaciously awesome. And who would have thought that, 20 years on, 'Tomahawk Cruise' would be even more relevant in this post-cold-war era? An ambitious, flawed, masterpiece CD $18 SKU:14452

There’s a certain charm in the mix… A real honesty that you find in those nowadaysands that are sectioned off from the mainstream… Handsome Jack deliver a confidence that only you can accept or deny. The truth isn’t for just anyone these days. The only factor that suffers with a band like Handsome Jack is the reality of the fact, that music, of any genre, suffers. There is a lot of music out ‘there’ riding invisible rays and available thru a multitude of formats and accessibilities. You gotta dig deep and find what connects with you before it’s lost in the shuffle of the beast called Right Fucking Now. As listens of “Naturally” tallied, the more and more I appreciated the release as a whole… The sorts of fondness that would not be found in a big-shot music reviewer scanning ten seconds of each track then spit out a few adjectives to coincide with that press release. Fuck that.
Rock N Roll isn’t dead if you don’t want it to be. Let’s try to spend some time with a CD or record or whatever, to connect once again. Yes, it comes naturally to just hit the button to most, but not because we want to, it’s because some have too. Take some time with “Naturally”. Turn it up. Sit a while. Open up your mind and your ears. You just might like something after all without being given permissions by the industry. LP $18 SKU:16202

SAND- His First Steps (1977 PSYCH GENIUS)Label:ROTORELIEF (FRANCE) Red & green-colored vinyl version. Limited edition of 777 copies. Previously unreleased album by German trio Sand, recorded in 1972. His First Steps is a forerunner of Golem (ROTOR 006CD/LP/BLU-LP/PIC-LP), the legendary 1974 album from the cosmic and psychedelic genius that is Sand. After the split of P.O.T., the early Sand submerged as a threesome in the basement of Claudiusstrasse and built up an alchemical assembling shop, where they resurrected the archetypical Golem. Sand considered themselves as an exile community in a fascinating area -- full of distinctly bizarre energy. Cover painting by Babs Santini, 2009. LP $28 SKU:17695

THEE PROPHETS- Playgirl- SEALED ORIGINAL w drill hole-Label:KAPP This band from Wisconsin had a promising pop future, thanks to their minor Bubblegum/sunshine pop hit ‘Playgirl,’ but stopped recording after this 1969 album, and then ditched the bubble-gum sound for Jimi Hendrix and Cream covers in concert. So much for a career. This, from Bubblegum University: “The most common schizophrenic theme, paranoia, combines the self-centeredness of narcissism with the hopelessness of depression to make the sufferer feel as if the entire world is against them. Two songs, "It's Up to You, Petula," and the Rare Breed's "Beg, Borrow, and Steal," make the comparison of being kept on a string as a way to illustrate the mental control that someone has over them. The singer in "Dizzy" makes no such metaphor, but admits to the object of his affections, "Girl, you got control of me." "It's Up to You, Petula" illustrates a different type of paranoia, when the singer complains, "I know you've been seeing someone else." The singer in Thee Prophets' "Playgirl" makes the same complaint when he talks about a girl who's been "running 'round on [him]."this band from Wisconsin had a promising pop future, thanks to their minor Bubblegum/sunshine pop hit ‘Playgirl,’ but stopped recording after this 1969 album, and then ditched the bubble-gum sound for Jimi Hendrix and Cream covers in concert. THEM- Now and Them (insert w. rare pictures and background info ) SAALE -Label:SPIRAL GROOVE Following the departure of Van Morrison in June 1966, Them regrouped in Belfast and then relocated to California in 1967. An established live attraction, they gigged widely and embraced the psychedelic movement, releasing this fine album in February 1968. It makes its long-awaited return to vinyl here, complete with an insert featuring rare pictures and background info. LP $20 SKU:15198

THIN LIZZY - Vagabonds of the Western World (’73 ) 180 gram - Label:FUTURE DAYS RECORDINGS Seismic shifts happened between the previous year's Shades of a Blue Orphanage and 1973's Vagabonds of the Western World. Frontman Phil Lynott was still documenting working class life in the group's native Dublin, and the band still featured guitarist Eric Bell and drummer Brian Downey, even if Bell was soon to leave; the shift was in the feel of the album. Between Jim Fitzpatrick's lurid album cover which depicted the band in space, the new, hot-rod-like Thin Lizzy logo, and Lynott's newly throaty howl, it's possibly the first Thin Lizzy album on which they truly could be described as a hard rock band. Vagabonds presented a swaggering confidence, a band buoyed by the success of semi-accidental smash hit 'Whisky in the Jar,' and carved out a moody, dark sound by borrowing bits from the blues, folk, psych, and Celtic music. Check out 'Slow Blues' for proof, and decide whether Lynott or the guitars win the wail-off that begins the track. 'Whisky in the Jar' had been a bone of contention for the band who felt it didn't represent them. Pushed out due to their presence on package tours with rockers Slade and Suzi Quatro, it seemed to seal their fate, and their Vagabonds single, 'The Rocker,' set out their stall for good. The weirdness and idiosyncrasies of Phil Lynott's early songwriting hadn't been ironed out completely: 'The Hero and the Madman' saw them try their hand at acid-fried cowboy rock -- if such a thing ever existed. After the album, and after Bell's departure due to ill health and disillusionment with the music industry, Thin Lizzy were reinvented once again. Lynott recruited two guitarists and the band left Decca to record Nightlife for Phonogram. Their big hits and glory years -- beginning with 1976's Jailbreak -- were still ahead of them, but, with Vagabonds as a centerpiece, Thin Lizzy's early years left behind a cabinet of curiosities." Pressed on 180-gram vinyl. LP $22 SKU:16582

THURSDAY’S CHILDREN- 1965-1969 - Label:VOXX 200.052 - LAST COPIES Originally known as The Druids when they formed in Houston, Texas in 1964 they changed their name to Thursdays Children during 1965. The first 45 was quite an accessible punk affair, whilst their second and third were more British-influenced. After one final and disappointing rock and roll 45, drugs and the draft had accounted for many of the band and they regrouped as The Pointing Hand Group. This retrospective album on Voxx includes material spanning their career from 1965-69 with 45s, unissued and live material. It's the best source for their recorded output. -- [Vernon Joynson, Fuzz Acid & Flowers]. LP $12 SKU:7969

TIN HOUSE- ST (70s powerhouse rock ) w liners, rare photos, insert plus pic slv EP -Label:LION Includes everything Tin House recorded for Epic, including two previously unreleased tracks and the elusive (and unique) single versions of 'I Want Your Body' and 'Be Good and Be Kind.
Taken directly from 24-bit/96kHz master tape transfers.
Four panel insert has liner notes by Doug Sheppard (Ugly Things)
Photos from the archive of drummer Mike Logan.
Tin House were so good—their music was a hard-rocking onslaught of lust, chops and powerhouse riffs that gripped like an alligator bite—they were signed to Epic Records out of high school. They were respected by Leslie West and Johnny and Edgar Winter. Their album (released in 1971) was produced by Rick Derringer. But like other almost famous bands, Tin House fell away into unjust obscurity. Tin House's focus was on heavy rock like the sex-fueled opener, ‘I Want Your Body,' and standout track ‘Be Good and Be Kind,’ with a catchy up-and-down, down-and-up riff played adeptly by guitar prodigy Floyd Radford, and a driving monster beat laid down by drummer Mike Logan; the song tears in as a fast as a Florida hurricane and sweeps the listener up into its vortex for two-and-a-half minutes of energized bliss. Yet the album also showed diversity: Radford’s melancholy ballad ‘Tomorrow;’ the jivin’ honky tonk of ‘30 Weight Blues’ (a tribute to the band’s 1962 Ford Econoline van); ‘Lady of the Silent Opera,’ which featured orchestration by seasoned studio musicians from New York City’s Local 802 Union to underscore its positive message of “look to the heaven—smile to the blue sky.” Lean, fluid, tight, and the best hard rock album from the USA you probably never heard of (until now)!
"In the twinkling universe of virtuoso electric guitarists that followed in the wake of the genre’s progenitor Jimi Hendrix, perhaps one of the most deserving of renewed recognition is Floyd Radford of the band Tin House, a little known three piece that signed briefly to CBS records in 1970 and released one highly prized album a year later. The overdriven, fluid guitar work—heavy on the wah-wah pedal—is brought to the fore by a beefy full production that lifts the band above the sludgy audio presentation that bedevilled many heavy rock albums of the era." —Richard Allen, Shindig!
