Like the debut full length, this is a masterpiece of gently crafted acid folk sounds with jazzy touches that will remind you of a.o. Pentangle or John Martyn. The album is sure to appeal not only to folk lovers, but also those into more progressive stuff. Originally issued on the French branch of CBS in 1972, the reissue reproduces the original glossy laminated sleeve and includes an insert with photos and notes by Jim Cuomo himself. MORMOS -The Great Wall of China plus 7” (1972 acid folk) - Label:WAH WAH Recorded in 1971 and originally only issued in France by CBS, the first LP by post-SPOILS OF WAR band Mormos is a masterpiece of fabulous experimental psychedelic acid folk sounds and bizarre melodies. Influences from contemporaries such as The Incredible String Band are present, as are some resemblances to the music of f.i. Comus or Dr. Strangely Strange. Mormos nevertheless created unique athmospheres which were (and are) unheard in other music of the era. Jim Cuomo formed Mormos after the demise of his Spoils Of War project. The new group moved from the USA to France, where they recorded two albums. The first was 'Great Wall Of China', which now gets reissued in cooperation with Cuomo himself. OZ KNOZZ -Ruff Mix( US 70s private press hard rock/prog)Label:OZONE First legit reissue of one of the best US private press hard rock/progressive rock albums of the 1970s. Formed in 1969 in Houston, TX, Oz Knozz's original crew included multi-instrumentalists Jack Alford, Bill Massey and Duane Massey. Alford left the group in 1971 and was replaced by drummer Marty Naul, while the next year the trio was joined by guitarist Richard Heath. The band had also a three-man horn section, which was dropped quite fast, although horns remained a part of the band's sound, even on their rare and epochal 1975 private press debut ''Ruff Mix,” released on the band’s own Ozone label.“Ruff Mix” mainly grooves in Hard Rock territory—the second track 'Peanut Butter Yoni' sounds a bit like Judas Priest with a proto-Metal feeling; but the album also has elements of Progressive Rock, Horn Rock and Pomp Rock. Like most bands of the era, the idea was to throw out a few different styles to see if something would stick… the theory being that a major label would hear the private album by chance and sign said band so they could open for Led Zeppelin or Foghat's next US tour… or something like that. What separates Oz Knozz from others is a strong compositional component, the band have plenty of original ideas and muster superb instrumentation. The guitar work ranges from hard and powerful to melodic and bluesy and is supported by some great keyboard, including awe-inspiring organ and synth waves. The three-part 15-minute 'Doodley Squat’ suite features heavy dual keyboard parts, crunchy guitars and expressive vocals; the result is a terrific Hard Prog track with lot of energy. For many, the standout track is the groovy and infectious horn rocker, which sounds as dated as the movement itself and easily could have been from 1969. SIMIAN LIFE-Another Way Down(Rob Campanella) Label:HYPNOTIC BRIDGE Largely inspired by the lush, semi-orchestral soundtrack work from late ‘60s and early ‘70s Europe, this track layers a repeated string theme and solos by sitar and saxophone over a driving, rock backbeat. n making “Another Way Down,” the brothers Campanella were joined by Misha Bullock on drums and vocals along with Gabriel Lazar on piano. In producing the track, they were inspired by the studio wizardry and experimentation that came out of the latter half of the 1960s, much as it did with Revolver-era Beatles. For example, a Roland Space Echo tape delay and ADT (Artificial Double-Tracking) were applied to the vocals for an otherworldly vibe. Additionally, they used a recording technique known as varispeed on the guitar solo, which was purposely recorded at half-speed and an octave lower, thus giving it a frantic effect when sped up to song’s actual tempo. The flip side, “Briefing,” is an excerpt from a forthcoming Simian Life song that took on a life of its own. TIMOTHY EERIE-I Fear The Void Is Waiting For Me--Label:HYPNOTIC BRIDGE “I Fear The Void Is Waiting For Me” (inspired by a serious dose of mushrooms and the resulting experience of dissolution and rebirth) and “Acid Lake” were both recorded in a few different places. Bass, drums and rhythm guitar were tracked live at a studio on a college campus. The band slipped into BB King’s as they were closing one night and recorded the organ parts on a vintage Hammond and Leslie setup in about 15 minutes. FLAMIN' GROOVIES-SUPERSNAZZ (1969 debut)-Label:TONEFLOAT he Flamin' Groovies' debut album went almost directly into the cut-out bins within a year or so of its 1969 release. Fortunately, the band survived the neglect heaped on that record—and in the ensuing years, Supersnazz has achieved an exalted reputation among not just Groovies fans, but lovers of rock & roll in general, having held up extraordinarily well across the decades, and still able to make its own case for greatness as an astonishing document of straight-ahead rock & roll circa 1969. It’s fully contemporary to its time (and, by extension, almost timeless), with none of the artificial period nostalgia (and parodying) that was already creeping into the "oldies" scene. It's also a lot of fun; in fact, based on the evidence, Supersnazz may well have been the most fun record of 1969. Roy Loney, Cyril Jordan, Tim Lynch, George Alexander, and Danny Mihm run through a quirky mix of Loney and Loney/Jordan originals and standards, encompassing styles from proto-'70s punk (want to bet the Ramones wore out copies of this album?) to '50s New Orleans R&B, country music, and even ragtime, and while a small bit of it is compromised by the presence of some too-prominent clarinet and saxophone, the whole record is a rollicking good time, made even better by the sequencing, which offers a full range of surprises, even on the fourth or fifth listen -- one can never settle in with this record before something weirdly wonderful comes along to draw the listener in yet another direction. From the fiery, Brian Jones-era Stones-style, fuzztone-driven opener 'Love Have Mercy,' the band shows what it can do in everything from straight-ahead boogie to slow ballads ('A Part from That') and '50s rockers ('The Girl Can't Help It,' 'Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu'), country (‘Brushfire'), and R&B, all done with a unique array of stylistic flourishes that made this one of the most original long-players of 1969. By the ninth track, the pounding, punk-driven 'Somethin' Else/Pistol Packin' Mama,' the whole album achieves a kind of otherworldly continuum, like something out of a strange and wonderful corner of the universe that -- though none knew it at the time -- pointed the way to a coming decade of achievement by the likes of the Ramones, Jonathan Richman, et al, not to mention the Groovies themselves. Searing art rock monsterpiece dominated by a relentlessly coruscating lead guitar sonic attack as if played by a demonically possessed John McLaughlin. Flux is ex-Babe Ruth, ex-Motiffe, with lead guitar by John Grimaldi before he joined Argent and worked on their prog masterpiece 'Circus'. This album is taken from a mono mastertape recorded on a BBC Mobile Unit at a live gig in 1973. A shocked Record Mirror journalist witnessed the concert and described it in a published Record Mirror review as 'a new form of music'. Sound quality is great and this is a band in top form playing exactly what they want, in a zone a bit like King Crimson's 'Red', but with insane guitar leads that bludgeon the listener to death. The vocalist later joined Italian prog rockers Flea On The Honey. Play this with a hangover and you will die in screaming agony. One very short track, and four very long ones. After the band's break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS, and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively. Following the success of "Hanging On the Telephone," JACK LEE has mostly focused on his songwriting career, releasing an album in 1981. Both Peter and Paul are still recording and touring. NORMAN HAINES BAND -DEN OF INIQUITY(UK psych/prog w 2 bonus tracks 1971 LP Label:ETHELION Reissue on LP of legendary heavy psych album. Including heavy re-work of 'Mr. Armageddon' and a lost track 'When I Come Down', later recorded by Black Sabbath, but never released! Originally from '71.In addition, 2 recordings from rare singles (listed only on the vinyl label).Soon after recording the iconic album 'We Are Everything You See' with his band Locomotive, Norman departed the group to establish this heavier outfit. The keyboard player was joined by guitarist Neil Clark, bassist Andy Hughes and drummer Jimmy Skidmore. One of the most sought after releases of the progressive rock era, 'Den Of Inquity' was the only album recorded by the band. Musically it was a dark and heavy affair with superb compositions that included a reworked version of 'Mr. Armageddon' (previously recorded by Locomotive), the excellent title track and the epic 13-minute 'Rabbits'. Issued on the Parlophone imprint in 1971, the album was available for a few short months before being deleted. OUTSIDERS (UK) --CALLING ON YOUTH (1977 glam punk)-Label:1972 Before fronting classic post-punk group The Sound, Adrian Borland was a Wimbledon teenager enamored of Iggy Pop and the Velvet Underground. With friends, he formed The Outsiders. In 1976, they home-recorded 'Calling On Youth', a searching full-length that straddles nihilo-punk argot as well as smudged glam balladry. Its release in 1977, on the group's own Raw Edge label, with Borland's cityscape abstraction on the cover, marked the first independent punk full-length in the United Kingdom. 'Calling On Youth' announces Borland as more than a precious teenage bandleader.
