LATE, THE -SONGS FROM THE FAMILY TREE (1967 HOllies inspired) Label:WOODEN HILL Although harmony-based British soft rock act Unicorn didnt release their superb debut album, 'Uphill All The Way', until mid-1971, the core of the band had been playing together, principally as the Late, for several years. With comprehensive liner notes, quotes and numerous photographs, 'Songs From The Family Tree' is an essential item for Unicorn fans and admirers of late Sixties British pop alike CD $17 SKU:23320

LEOPOLD, PERRY - Experiments in Metaphysics (70s hippie artifact)Label:GEAR FAB Experiment in Metaphysics is one of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts of the hippie era. Recorded live during a five-hour session in the basement of a shoe-repair shop in June of 1970, most of the 300 original copies of Experiment in Metaphysics were simply given away in one afternoon, yet, inexplicably, bootleg copies of the album later sprang up half-way around the world. The reason for the album's staying power is apparent: the music is gorgeous, first-rate progressive folk. In fact, Side Two of the original LP's label was given the title "Acid-Folk" (the other side was called "Kommercial"), probably one of the very first uses of that term. Perry Leopold creates a proto-gothic ambience full of dark and brooding imagery that is much less cartoonish than most of what passes as "acid," while maintaining that music's visceral punch. Like much of the youth countercultural scene of the times, Leopold can occasionally give into mystical pretentiousness. Experiment in Metaphysics has moments -- namely the spoken-word monologue in the middle of the mostly stellar opening cut, "The Absurd Paranoid" -- of philosophical meandering. Still, even those moments maintain a period charm. Experiment in Metaphysics is exquisitely intelligent and forward-looking. Leopold's mood is much more pious than most music that came out of the psychedelic era, and, indeed, extreme piety tends to be a product of youth, yet there is something aged and wise about Leopold's music. The "Kommercial" side, cryptically subtitled "SMOKE," is conceptually bleak, and after "The Absurd Paranoid," it takes on a much more palpable quality, grounded in experience ("Cold in Philadelphia" and the gorgeous "The 35th of May"). The "Acid-Folk" side (subtitled "DROP") opens with the stark, multi-part title track. Each of the three songs in this section is a virtual mini-suite, with the closing cut, "The U.S.S. Commercial," standing as the album's magnum opus. Experiment in Metaphysics shows some truly progressive and experimental songwriting, even for the time period. Each song, even the instrumental cuts, feels like a story, with beginnings and endings and all kinds of interesting ideas and storylines sandwiched in between. The album is a relic that has not lost one iota of its power. ~ Stanton Swihart CD $10 SKU:22317

LOCKSLEY HALL-ST (1969 Spokane psych rarity) Label:GEAR FAB This relatively unknown Spokane, WA. psychedelic band recorded this eerie and haunting LP in the Spring of 1969 at the legendary Audio Recorders in Seattle, WA. Produced by Sonics engineer Kearney Barton and long time Northwest guitarist Ned Neltner (Mark Five, Gas Company, Junior Cadillac), the beautiful vocals of Shannon Svenson are very reminiscent of the sounds being produced at that time by It's A Beautiful Day, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother & The Holding Company. CD $10 SKU:21529
LONESOME SHACK - City Man (Great boogie blues groove)Label:KNICK KNACK On the surface, it's easy to burrow into City Man and imagine it was recorded in some Mississippi juke joint a long, long time ago (accentuated by the fact that Todd pushes both his guitar and the vocal through the same little amp). But when you put an ear to what's really going on, you start hearing all the subtle-but-wild-ass stuff Garrard's doing - or the cool how-did-he-do-that riffs Todd pulls, tugs, and flecks out of his Tiesco's strings or Bergman's not-what-you-would've-expected-was-going-to-happen approach to blues bass. And therein lies the secret to Lonesome Shack: you can have a happy, casual hangout with City Man and have a good time or you can dig into the thing as deeply as you like and find a treasure trove of mind-blowing grooves that go somewhere beyond the traditional. --Brian Robbins, Brian-Robbins.com, January 1, 2013 CD $10 SKU:21849

LOS PACIFICOS - Havana 1967(Beatles/Kinks style) SAALE!-Label:DAPP Only known recording of late 60s Cuban rock music inspired by The Beatles and the Kinks, of course. The tapes were stashed in a closet and smuggled out decades later. Digipak. An old tape missing for more than 30 years in warm and humid Cuba. Nine rock songs recorded in 1967 in two hurried hours, with borrowed instruments and without previous rehearsal. Four students, each about 17 years old, who filled the Havana student underground with the peace logo and forbidden music for two years: music that sent people to jail, or provoked strong discrimination just by listening to it. An incredible performance with professional standards, recorded in a completely censored environment. A musical program with covers of the Kinks, Beatles, and more, as well as original Cuban rock songs written by Los Pacificos. A unique session stolen from a system that locked doors to rock and peace. The only known recording of a Cuban rock band from the sixties. CD $10 SKU:21639

LOST SOULS--ST mid 60s unknown U.S. Brit Invasion/ psych) SAALE!Label:LION The Lost Souls never released any records, yet the meager recorded evidence that survives indicates that they were one of the finest unknown American groups of the mid-'60s, able to write both catchy British Invasion-type rockers and, in their latter days, experimental psychedelic pieces with unusual tempo changes and song structures. The band were also unusual in their occasional embellishment of the typical period guitar-bass-drums lineup with flute, sax, and mandolin. Although popular in their Cleveland hometown, they broke up in 1968 to attend college. Rhythm guitarist Denny Carleton, who wrote and sang some of their best material, went on to briefly join The Choir, their chief (and more successful) rivals." —Richie Unterberger The music scene in Cleveland in the mid to late 1960’s was ripe with talent: the James Gang with Joe Walsh and Glenn Schwartz, The Choir, Eric Carmen (pre-Raspberries), Glass Harp with Phil Keaggy, the Damnation of Adam Blessing… and the Lost Souls. Of all those bands, only the Lost Souls never released a record. Then again, they were in high school, trying to navigate dress codes and bullies—and playing in front of a couple thousand fans when not suspended. Sure, they lost a battle of the bands at Teen Fair 1968, but it was to the James Gang with Joe Walsh. And somehow it is the Lost Souls who emerge from that time and place with the greatest mystique and some of the most adventurous music, music which few have heard. Lost Souls main songwriter Denny Carleton released a cassette of the band’s original recordings in 1984. It received airplay on hundreds of college and public radio stations in the USA (and around the world), and garnered glowing reviews… and that was it, until now.Not only is this the first time the music of the Lost Souls has been available since that cassette, our Lion Productions edition is the first release for many additional Lost Souls cuts, including alternate versions of key tracks like the insightful ‘Things That Are Important’ and ‘I’m Falling’ (the closest to a hit the band ever had), all taken from the original tapes and carefully mastered. Seven bonus tracks highlight the work of Lost Soul's main songwriter Denny Carleton (one-time member of The Choir, and more surprisingly, punk legends the Pagans); selections by The Choir, Moses, Milk and Carleton, many in all possible low-fi glory, recorded on various 4-Track devices, ranging from power-pop to grimy garage.•Whopping 32-page booklet has the full story of the band and info on the recordings by Carlton •Includes a multitude of unseen photos from his personal archive•Carefully remastered from the original tapes (+ the occasional post-Lost Souls 45 single)•”One of the great lost groups of the 60's.” —Option Magazine CD $10 SKU:20365

LOVE SCULPTURE -ANOTHER HELPING (1968 w DAVE EDMUNDS).Label:VOGON Love Sculpture was Dave Edmunds, David William Edwards and John David. When they recorded 'Sabre Dance' for John Peel, who was so impressed that he played it twice in one programme, on 6th October 1968, it became an unexpected hit. At the time the band had only recorded it as a session track, but, as producer Bernie Andrews recalled (in Ken Garner, The Peel Sessions, p.57), after Peel had enthused over it, the piece was re-recorded and rush-released by Parlophone Records and reached number five in the singles chart, eight weeks after being first heard on Top Gear. Love Sculpture recorded three sessions, made up mainly of blues and rock'n'roll cover versions, for Peel, two in 1968 and one in 1969, but were unable to repeat the success of their only hit, despite attempting another rock version of a classical piece, Georges Bizet's 'Farandole', in their final session. This album contains all but one of the songs they recorded for John Peel. After they split up, leader Dave Edmunds continued to perform in a rock'n'roll influenced style, had a successful career in the 1970s both as a solo artist and with his group Rockpile, and picked up airplay on Peel's shows CD $17 SKU:23524

You know the old saying, “Go west, young man”? Well, it’s far from cliché. Over the years, some have hit the road in search of Hollywood’s glitz and glamour, others, simply for warmer climes, but in the early 1970’s, Detroit-native and Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. brought his musical family to the left coast, one piece at a time. He began by launching the Mowest subsidiary in 1971, a new L.A.-based label dedicated to coastal grooves and an eye towards the top of the charts. COMP CD $10 SKU:24193

SPIRITS & WORM-ST (RARE 1969 West coast style psych)SAALE! Label:AUDIO CLARITY he only album released by psychedelic quintet Spirits & Worm is the stuff of confused legend. The group conjured the kind of sound heavily associated with the West Coast style of psychedelia, as mastered by San Francisco-based Jefferson Airplane. But Spirits & Worm was based in Long Island, New York, laying down the tracks for this A&M release at Bill Stahl's Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, where Iron Butterfly and Vanilla Fudge cut most of their work. Spirits & Worm featured chief songwriter Carlos Hernandez on fiery lead guitar, Tommy Parris on subdued bass and vocals, Artie Hicles Junior on drums, with Alfred Scotti on rhythm guitar and vocals, and adding to the Jefferson Airplane reference, the emotive tones of Adrianne Maurici. Despite the album being a fine set of songs dealing, sex, death and other grand relationship themes, the album was pulled from the shelves almost immediately after the first copies were circulated in the New York area, the legend having it that A&M executives were shocked and dismayed by the image of two goats resting on a grave as the front cover, fearing occult references in an era riven by Manson Family hysteria and the situation of a Zodiak Killer at large. The album has been renedered exceedingly rare, this welcome reissue placing it more readily into reach. LP $19 SKU:23720
SPIRITWOOD -ST original sealed copies of this private press Acid Archives fave! Label:Tanrydoon Private pressing from 1979, first released on the Tanrydoon label out of New Berlin, Pa. Original sealed copies, which contain a lyric insert. “Hippie-flavored rural folk form this duo, who write good songs and deliver tight male-female vocal harmonies. It sounds almost a decade earlier than the release year, and recurring influences from UK folk (like Clearing) contribute further to the sense of displacement. Occasional use of piano and a strong sense of melody have made for some comparisons with Mellow Candle, and it’s a testimony to Spiritwood’s quality that this doesn’t seem too outlandish. There are a few moves towards CSN domains, and late 1960’s westcoast in general, which should have been explored more. The guitar arrangements (with banjo on two trad-ish numbers) interplay seamlessly with the strong vocals, and the personal commitment makes up for a certain lack of artistic direction.” —Acid Archives

ONE ONLY!
LENO-Vida e Obra de Johnny McCartney (1971 Brazilian Cream/ STeppenwolf style SAALE!-Label:LION Leno’s “Vida e Obra de Johnny McCartney” was intended as the next musical step after Tropicália, it’s full-blooded rock and roll approach intended to link the music that had already been made to the music that would be played a few years later. This record just might have been that bold step had CBS released it in 1971. But censors banned most of the tracks, and Leno was fortunate (thanks perhaps to his string of innocent sounding Jovem Guarda number one chart hits in Brazil as half of duo Leno e Lillian) not to experience the exile or imprisonment of other artists of the time. He was also fortunate that the master tapes survived in the CBS vaults, making them available for this reissue. The album has a sound that has more to do with bands such as Sly & The Family Stone, the Beatles (post 1967), Cream, and Steppenwolf, and features contributions from music legends Marcos Valle, Raul Seixas (anarchic surrealistic icon of Brazilian counterculture), hard psych rockers A Bolha, and members of Los Shakers and Renato e Seus Blue Caps. One of the most singular records of the 1970’s rock era in Brazil, speaking in terms both historic and musical, with a significance in Brazil that makes people who know it well wonder how it has taken so long to be known worldwide, in a time when the efforts of the Brazilian rock and psychedelic underground scene are so well-documented. A 24-page booklet (packed with photos and lyrics) details Leno’s career, as well as the story behind this exceptional record. CD $10 SKU:20090
