CRYSTAL SYPHON- FAMILY EVIL/ ELEPHANT BALL (SF 60s)Label:GEAR FAB DBL CD! Comes in an old-style “tip-on” jacket with a digital download. Plying their trade in the fertile San Francisco scene of the late '60s, Crystal Syphon's name was only known to aficionados through viewing copies of old SF gig posters and through the index of bands at the back of Ralph Gleason's book on the rise of Jefferson Airplane. Then both their studio and live 1967-1969 archival recordings were discovered that replaced the imagination with true grooves in 2012 and 2015 with the release of 2 LPs on Roaratorio Records. Trying to find comparison with other Bay area bands from that era has proven a bit fruitless as they don't specifically evoke any of the heavy hitters of the era. They have a bit of a dreamy, stoned vibe with some great harmonies and some have compared their style to Quicksilver Messenger Service (John Cipollina was their idol!!) as well as H.P. Lovecraft. As with so many bands of the era, the draft, time and declining fortunes signaled the end of the band. There is some great guitar work alongside the Farfisa organ in the extended jams, and fans of the west-coast sound should delight in these recordings. DBL CD $14 SKU:24207

AUGER, BRIAN Tiger--featuring Brian Auger, Rod Stewart & Long John Baldry, and Brian Auger with Jimmy Page & Sonny Boy Williamson.DBL CD slip case Label:ATOM Slim-line jewel case, w/slipcasesTop-notch 25-track collection of Hammond organ maestro Brian Auger—the main event being Auger’s rare singles for Columbia Records (‘Fool Killer,’ ‘Tiger’ and ‘Kiko,’), as well as the rare Julie Driscoll singles for Parlophone Records (‘I Didn't Want To Have To Do It’ and ‘Don't Do It No More.’) Auger was raised in London, where he took up the keyboards as a child and began to hear jazz by way of the American Armed Forces Network and an older brother's record collection. By 1964, he won first place in the categories of "New Star" and "Jazz Piano" in a reader's poll in Melody Maker; but that same year he abandoned jazz for a more R&B-oriented approach and expanded his group to include John McLaughlin (guitar) and Glen Hughes (baritone saxophone) as the Brian Auger Trinity. This group split up at the end of 1964, and Auger moved over to Hammond B-3 organ, teaming with bass player Rick Brown and drummer Mickey Waller. After a few singles, he recorded his first LP in 1968—a session organized to spotlight blues singer Sonny Boy Williamson that featured his group, saxophonists Joe Harriot and Alan Skidmore, and guitarist Jimmy Page. By mid-1965, Auger's band had grown to include guitarist Vic Briggs and vocalists Long John Baldry, Rod Stewart, and Julie Driscoll, and was renamed Steampacket. More a loosely organized musical revue than a group, Steampacket lasted a year before Stewart and Baldry left and the band split. Auger retained Driscoll and brought in bass player Dave Ambrose and drummer Clive Thacker to form a unit that was billed as Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and the Trinity. Tracks on this compilation are culled from Auger’s many permutations of the aforementioned groupss: Brian Auger Trinity, Brian Auger & Trinity, Steampacket featuring Brian Auger, Steampacket featuring Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger, Steampacket featuring Rod Stewart & Brian Auger, Steampacket featuring Brian Auger, Rod Stewart & Long John Baldry, and Brian Auger with Jimmy Page & Sonny Boy Williamson. FAHEY, JOHN- On The Sunny Side Of The Ocean DBL CD-Label:BROOK Slim-line jewel case, w/slipcases Simply put, this compilation is a different and much cheaper version of The Best of John Fahey, 1959-1977. The tracks are in different order, but the contents are the same. These 15 tracks are taken from just a few Fahey albums on Takoma -- Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes, The Legend of Blind Joe Death, The Dance of Death & Other Plantation Favorites, and Leo Kottke, John Fahey & Peter Lang -- though he recorded more than a dozen. He selected them himself for the original LP, though at least one -- "Dance of the Inhabitants of the Palace of King Philip XIV of Spain" -- was recut specifically for this collection. The CD includes a liner essay by Chris White.” —AllMusic CD $10 SKU:24305

GONG -Opium For The People (electric cheese!)DBL CD slipcase -Label:ATOM slim-line jewel case, w/slipcases Thirty-one tracks originally recorded for the BYG-Actuel label and released on the following albums: “Magick Brother, Mystic Sister” (1970), “Banana Moon” and “Camembert Electrique” (1971). Leaning a little toward the pop end of the spectrum, “Magick Brother” is a fairly light album. Gilli Smyth's "space whispering" makes its debut on the opening track, though the album is not as spacy as it is ethereal. Daevid Allen's guitar sound is muted throughout this project, dynamics taking a back seat in most of these recordings. He relies on distortion and various guitar augmentations, all of which works quite well in the context of the collective sound. As for “Camembert Electrique,” well, it’s the epitome of the band's early Daevid Allen phase with Ph.P.'s (pothead pixies) in full, blazing glory. The band's eclectic "electric cheese" rock is a mixture of psychedelic rock, spacy atmospherics and lyrics, and doses of jazz often presented with a pop sensibility, yet always intense. From the first cut on “Camembert Electrique,” you are transported to planet Gong via the voice of a "radio gnome.” Daevid Allen leads the band through several compositions musically (not lyrically) reminiscent of, and possibly influenced by, early King Crimson—a hard, raw-edged sound propelled by a strong guitar-sax-percussion combo. Drummer Pip Pyle played on only a few Gong sessions; he is a major figure here, as is saxophonist Didier Malherbe. Both are up front on the wailing progressive rocker ‘You Can't Kill Me,’ which also features guitarist Allen in top form. Allen's declarative ‘I've Bin Stone Before,’ the first part of an inventive three-song medley, is of particular interest; introductory church organ and avant-garde sax make this the quintessential Gong experience. Suffice to say, the tracks from “Banana Moon” are also quite weird, and a great deal of fun. CD $10 SKU:24307
MAGMA-Uber Kommandoh (French prog rock) DBL CD Label:ATOM slim-line jewel case, w/slipcases 2-cd set contains the Üdü Wüdü and Attahk albums in their entirety as well as a live track from 1988. Led by classically-trained drummer Christian Vander, the Paris-based Magma was, in their way, perhaps the ultimate progressive-rock group; while other artists achieved greater commercial success and critical acclaim, Magma typified the many ambitions and excesses of the genre which won it as many detractors as fans, even going so far as to invent their own lyrical and musical language in order to bring their unique vision to life. The son of a jazz pianist, Vander initially followed in his father's footsteps, modeling his technique on the work of John Coltrane alum Elvin Jones and starting his career with a number of jazz and R&B outfits. While in Paris in 1969, however, he was struck by a vision of earth's spiritual and ecological future which so disturbed him that he decided to explore his fears by musical means, assembling Magma with the aid of wife and vocalist Stella, singer Klaus Blasquiz, and fusion bassists Francis Moze and Jannick Top. This fourteen track 2xCD set contains the entirety of “Udu Wudu” (their seventh album, originally released in 1976), and “Attahk” (their eighth album, originally released in 1977), as well as an eighteen-minute track recorded at The Taverne De L'Olypia in Paris in June 1975. MAYFIELD, CURTIS- Love to the People (1970s black psychedelia )DBL CDLabel:ATOM slim-line jewel case, w/slipcases This collection concentrates on only the very best of his outstanding mid-1970’s output, full of hard-hitting commentary on the state of affairs in black, urban ghettos. Features: ‘Little Child Runnin’ Wild,’ ‘No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song),’ ‘Tripping Out,’ ‘Pusher Man,’ and the soundtrack version of ‘Superfly.’ As one magazine noted, "eulogies...have treated him...as a sort of secular saint--rather like an American Bob Marley". That noted, Mayfield is not as well-known as contemporaries like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, or James Brown, perhaps because of their more consistent streams of hits or more mainstream style of music.” Nevertheless, he is (and should continue to be) highly regarded for his innovations in the 1960s and 1970s, and for his unique style of music, perhaps best described as "black psychedelia... remarkable for the scope of its social awareness". CD $10 SKU:24309
NATIONAL HEALTH- Dreams Wide Awake (1975 prog rock)DBL CD Label:ATOM slim-line jewel case, w/slipcases National Health was one of the last of the great Canterbury progressive rock bands, containing a heady and unique mixture of rock, jazz and classical music. The band was formed in the fall of 1975 by keyboardists Alan Gowen (ex-Gilgamesh) and Dave Stewart (ex-Hatfield & The North), who wanted to create a large "rock orchestra" by combining personnel from their previous bands. I think any listener would find it hard to deny that the first two National Health albums ("National Health" and "Of Queues and Cures", from 1977 and 1978, respectively) contained most of their very best stuff. "Dreams Wide Awake" is a two-disc compilation which contains all of the music from those first two classic albums (albeit not in the same running order, something which iTunes and a couple of blank cdr’s can easily fix). For a newcomer to this music, the 95 minutes of total music on "Dreams Wide Awake" is a great introduction to this band's unique sound, with their complex structures and compositions, numerous key modulations and time changes, continuously developing themes, and intricate, innovative sounds and melodies. P.P. ARNOLD-Angel Of The Morning (northern soul) DBL CD-Label:ATOM slim-line jewel case, w/slipcases. P.P. Arnold enjoyed several major British hits on Immediate, including songs written for her by Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane from label-mates The Small Faces (who also backed her on several recordings). Her best twenty five recordings for the Immediate are all here on this zippy double-disc collection. Arnold’s debut album, “The First Lady Of Immediate” is featured—an incredibly rare album as it was withdrawn from sale soon after release and is currently valued at more than £500. Also included are all of her Immediate singles, highlights being ‘The First Cut Is The Deepest,’ ‘The Time Has Come,’ ‘(If You Think You're) Groovy’ her last hit, ‘Angel Of The Morning,’ and Arnold’s debut Immediate Records single ‘Everything's Gonna Be Alright’/’Life Is But Nothing,’ a big hit on the Northern Soul scene. PRINCIPAL EDWARDS- Round One (60s uk weirdness)Label:ESOTERIC The band managed to amass an impressive series of live appearances opening for such luminary acts as PINK FLOYD, ELTON JOHN, JOHN & YOKO ONO, VAN DER GRAF GENERATOR, CARAVAN, FLEETWOOD MAC, YES, KING CRIMSON, LED ZEPPELIN, EGG, THE WHO, DAVID BOWIE, MANFRED MANN, DEEP PURPLE, and THE STRAWBS among many others.Originally released on Decca's Progressive imprint Deram in 1974, “Round One” (produced by Pink Floyd member Nick Mason) was the band's only album for the company. Originally formed in 1968 at Exeter University, the band was first known as Principal Edwards Magic Theatre and was a "loosely based musical and theatrical co-operative". PEMT were, at their height, a 14-piece group who delved into costumes and theatrics during their surreal shows. They released two albums (Soundtrack (1969) and The Asmoto Running Band(1971)) on John Peel’s Dandelion label before folding. After this, however, a subset of the group decided to continue as a tighter, more compact unit, with a fittingly more compact title: Principal Edwards. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been remastered from the original Deram master tapes and includes three rare bonus tracks. Digitally remastered and expanded edition — the album’s first ever official UK CD release. CD $12 SKU:24311
PROCOL HARUM -Home [Remastered & Expanded] -Label:ESOTERIC The group's hardest-rocking classic album is, beyond some superb vocalizing by Gary Brooker, principally a showcase for Robin Trower's high-powered guitar and a rock-hard rhythm section, with B.J. Wilson only a little less animated than Ginger Baker on some of the music. Procol Harum had a split personality by this time, the band juxtaposing straight-ahead rock & roll numbers like "Still There'll Be More" and the Elvis Presley-influenced "Whisky Train" with darker, more dramatic pieces like "Nothing That I Didn't Know" and "Barnyard Story." Chris Copping doubles on organ, replacing Matthew Fisher, but the overall sound is that of a leaner Procol Harum, all except for the ambitious "Whaling Stories" -- even it was a compromise that nearly worked, showcasing Trower's larger-than-life guitar sound (coming off here like King Crimson's Robert Fripp in one of his heavier moments) within a somewhat pretentious art rock concept. It shows the strains within their lineup that the producers chose the lighter, more obviously accessible "Your Own Choice" -- on which Gary Brooker's piano is the lead instrument -- to end the album after "Whaling Stories"' pyrotechnic finish. [In 2015, Esoteric Recordings reissued Home in a Remastered and Expanded Edition featuring the U.S. single edit of "Whisky Train" as a bonus track.]” —Bruce Eder, AllMusic CD $12 SKU:24312

SOFT MACHINE -Shooting At The Moon (1967) DBL CD- Label:BROOK slim-line jewel case, w/slipcases Recorded in April '67, this collection of demos is interesting because we get to hear what they would've sounded like with guitar. It's played here by Daevid Allen, who left before their first album to form Gong. "The Soft Machine" (1968) contained no guitar, and the band went without it until 1975. These early tracks differ from what fans came to know and love in two major ways. For one, the emphasis is tilted toward rock at this point in their development. It's incredible how much jazzier they became as a drum, bass, and keyboard trio without guitar. Then again, Soft Machine were always enamored of avant-jazzers like Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra - as opposed to the blues-inspired Cream (to name another trio). The songs are pretty rough and ready, as you'd expect, save for Robert Wyatt's always-excellent drumming. Being a big fan of the first Soft Machine album, I was really interested to hear the early versions of the Vol. I songs, plus the ones that never made it to record. The songs here on Jet-Propelled Photographs have more of a traditional pop sensibility than anything else the Softs recorded, but they're super lo-fi, and the tracks that made it to Vol. I in reworked form do sound better on that album. Of the non-album tracks, the highlights for me are "She's Gone", "I'd Rather Be With You", and Ayers' "Jet-Propelled Photograph", which later turned up on Shooting at the Moon. CD $10 SKU:24314
PLASTIC CRIMEWAVE SYNDICATE -Massacre of the Celestials (deep psych) Label:GALACTIVE ARCHIVE (USA) ‘Massacre Of The Celestials is presented in a 350 gram Gloss Laminated Sleeve and comes with a download code. 300 Pressing Worldwide. Steven Krakow (aka Plastic Crimewave) is a dark sonic visionary whose every output is infused of the deepest psychedelic music (or just plain old music) out there. With Plastic Crimewave Syndicate you are treated to a howling, menacing, throbbing freak-out sthat is never for the faint hearted. Aided by skronkin' sax goddess Taralie Peterson (aka Louise Bock/Tar Pet) of avant musical coven Spires that in the Sunset Rise, Plastic Crimewave Syndicate go into uncharted realms on their 4th new epic album, "Massacre of the Celestials." Recorded over the course of a tu- multuous year on this small planet, a concept emerged of a story we all know and love-- the rise and fall of humanity, and then the post-apocalyptic rebirth of a new furtherly- dystopian mutated world. PCWSyndicate didn't discriminate with the freaky sonic tools needed to craft this molten behemoth of a LP, utilizing: damaged waves of No Waves, free-festival rave-ups that punters will knock down fences to pogo to, monochord Doom ruminations...and could that be groovy post-post-punkin' Funakdelica? These cosmic cats also go to the roots of all: The Blooz--elemental, drugged, n grungey--and like JAZZ, MAN! (free, not expensive, for thee people). Plastic Crimewave (bellows/guiterror), Kosmik Jru (bass rumble), and Jose "The Beast" Bernal (kit smash), keep the freaks a-rollin and a- tumblin on an LP destined to score the end of this feeble Earthen sphere. PINK FAIRIES -The Polydor YEARS- 3 CD SET (1967 underground supergroup)-Label:FLOATING WORLD Three CD set packed with bonus tracks, beautifully re-mastered! Pink Fairies grew out of The Deviants, a loose-knit band formed in 1967 by members of the West London hippie commune in Ladbroke Grove. Consisting primarily of vocalist Mick Farren, guitarist Paul Rudolph, bassist Duncan Sanderson, and drummer Russell Hunter, the group also featured satellite members Marc Bolan, Steve Peregrine Took, and players from the band Group X, later rechristened Hawkwind. After a disastrous US tour, Farren was fired and the remaining Deviants returned to London, where they recruited vocalist and former Pretty Things drummer Twink (born John Alder), who suggested the name Pink Fairies. Despite gaining a reputation for mythic debauchery, the group remained largely an underground sensation before signing to Polydor and releasing the three albums featured on this 3xCD set. The first two albums were recorded by the original line-up but Rudolph was replaced by Larry Wallis for the third (Kings Of Oblivion). Their first album (Never, Never Land) is the strongest of the three albums with solid 'heavy' guitar from Paul Rudolph and some furious drumming from Twink. The four bonus tracks include alternate edits of three great tracks plus the early single 'The Snake'. CD $15 SKU:22509
ROTOMAGUS - The Sky Turns Red: Complete Anthology(1971 protopunk) Label:LION On Julian Cope’s excellent Head Heritage web-site, the Seth Man raves about Rotomagus thus: “The first time I heard this track (‘Fighting C*ck’), I did not freak out. I merely walked into a nearby closet and screamed my head off for a minute solid, beat the floor and ripped my t-shirt... then I cowered when it hit me: this thing came out in 1971? Before “Raw Power”?! I just lost my mind... The only thing that predates this monster in terms of being a full-on amassing of all things heavy are all the many key points on Sir Lord Baltimore’s “Kingdom Come” LP and THAT’S it, brother. Hard to believe this is all pre-1971, as much of the demo is not just proto punk but proto hardc*re—with enough fiery attitude to make you want to scream along. The vocals are wild, while the guitar riffs and grinds and approaches a Stooges via Motorhead apocalyptic grandeur. Amazing! CD $10 SKU:14512
T2- ST (obscure 70s psych prog) -Label:ACME LION Even though fame and fortune never came to pass for T2, their Decca album “It’ll All Work out in Boomland” has become an all-time classic amongst collectors of progressive and psychedelic music, and even in the techno and dj scenes. Apart from a 1970 Sound of the 70’s BBC radio session, (included on our Acme/Lion reissue of “It’ll All Work Out in Boomland,” ACLN 1010 CD), fans assumed that “Boomland” was both the beginning and the end of the group’s recorded legacy. But Acme Records unearthed an eponymous second album of material, recorded in 1970 with the original line-up as demo tracks for a planned second album. This was first released way back in the late 1990’s, and is now available again thanks to the new Acme/Lion version which is the subject of this one-sheet. This second T2 album, had it been released in 1970, could have put the band on the same level of fame with the likes of Deep Purple, Free, and King Crimson (bands with whom T2 shared a stage). It’s hard-driving opener ‘Highway,’ ablaze with wailing guitars, gives way to moody introspection, culminating with the LSD induced finale ‘T2.’ It’s music that is dreamy without being sleepy; heavy without danger of suffocation. Those of you who were lucky enough to snap up a copy of the limited Acme Deluxe pressings of this album many years ago now can testify to the importance of these recordings. For those of you who missed out the first time around—or who have only recently discovered the greatness of the mighty T2—all we can say is, enjoy the power and glory of the second T2 album! CD $10 SKU:15627
UMBRA - ST(Brown ACid 70s heavy)Label:LION Umbra’s story is that of a band from the early 1970’s who recorded what they wanted to record: heavy, heavy music from the start of the “American Comedown Era” as we’ve seen it described by our friends for their “Brown Acid” series; a band whose music, terrific though it is, has never to this point been released out into the wide world. The tracks are hard-edged and heavy, verging on acid rock at times. Makes sense, as Umbra was a power trio most of their too-brief existence. Yet the songs (heavy though they are) have a deft touch. Spacey intros and weird effects were created by recording guitar licks, then re-recording them played backwards at double speed. There is an utterly refreshing category-free approach to writing songs that makes Umbra’s music exciting to hear. Comes with a 16-page booklet, with lyrics, photos, plus interesting and funny things that can only happen to musicians, and did to Umbra. CD $14 SKU:21740

A FINE DAY AND A BRILLIANT EVENING -Cherry Red Rarities 1983-85 (willowy pop)Label:CHERRY RED More willowy pop of yesteryear from the vaults of Cherry Red. The second release in the Cherry Red Rarities series, is a collection of rare and upstanding tracks from three of Cherry Red’s most popular artists: Jane And Barton, Grab Grab The Haddock (yes, they really did exist) and In Embrace. “The juxtaposition of the three artists here seems coincidental, yet they successfully present different facets of the sound of the label during the early 80's. Jane & Barton start with the acapella 'It's A Fine Day' which was later turned into the Opus III dancefloor smash. Flute and percussion accompany Jane on 'I Want To Be With You' to nice pastoral effects a la Virginia Astley, although the latter would have never named one of her songs 'Ha Bloody Ha', which poses such thought-provoking questions as "Did you hear about the woman who died" or "What part of a vegetable can't you eat". Simple voice and piano arrangement on 'There Is A Man' and 'You Are Over There' makes ideal lazy afternoon listening, only to be rudely disturbed by Mr.Barton's grating screech on 'You Are Over There Part Two'. Onto the marvelously named Grab Grab The Haddock, which included two of the three Marine Girls after Tracey Thorn went on to form Everything But The Girl. They pretty much carried on with the style of their previous band, only now augmented to a four-piece. Lightweight summery guitar pop, the stuff that made Cherry Red famous. In Embrace played moody melodic pop with guitar and synths. Although once described as 'introverted and emotionally unfathomable' the songs are actually quite classy and the sentiments deeply felt. 'The Darkest Horse' features a spine-tingling chord progression slightly reminiscent of the Cocteaus. They should have been big. The CD ends with a bonus video of 'It's A Fine Day'. COMP CD $5 SKU:20498
EMBER POP 69-74- VA Rainy Day Mind ( 60s ) -Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE Rainy Day Mind” is the first of two volumes surveying Ember’s pop repertoire from 1969 until the label’s demise at the end of the seventies. It comprises 21 tracks by artists ranging from obscure American singer Polly Niles to the internationally famous P J Proby, as well as ill-fated actor Alan Lake, Irish vocalist Lee Lynch, French pop star Black Swan and fuzz guitar-toting soul band Milt Matthews Inc. A clutch of projects including The Good Vibrations, The Good Ship Lollipop and Rusty Harness came to Ember courtesy of producer Mike Berry. The founding of US outlet Paramount-Ember in 1974, headed by music business veteran John Madara, brought albums by Denny Doherty (formerly of The Mamas And The Papas) and British all-girl glam rockers Mother Trucker into the fold. What these disparate sources all offer are fine performances of strong songs. Nor is there any shortage of collectables, topped by Davey Payne & The Medium Wave’s ‘A Walk In The Sunshine,’ which commands £50, and Blue Beard’s eponymous album, which only reached test pressing stage (£200), from which we have salvaged ‘Baby I Need You.’ Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging COMP CD $10 SKU:16376
Open Up Your Mind Up Your Mind - The Psych Pop World of Rembrandt Records 1966-1967- Label:CICADELIC RECORDS Open Up Your Mind covers the first two incredible years of Rembrandt Records, a Chicago based label. The first release in March 1966 was a bluesy garage-band novelty record titled "Boots Are Made For Talkin ". It was a parody of Nancy Sinatras, smash hit at the time, "These Boots Are Made For Walking". When the single failed to chart Rembrandt Records owner Reggie Weiss moved in a different direction, merging pop with psychedelic music, for the next single, "Open Up Your Mind". He wrote the song based on a LSD trip and response to the single was positive. Soon other psych-pop singles were issued featuring The Circus, The Nickel Bag, and Mondays Children. Cash Box magazine began plugging Rembrandt Records during the fall of 1966. However, Weiss was unable to secure solid distribution and could not compete with the larger Chicago based record labels such as Dunwich, USA, and Destination. By 1967, Weiss devoted all of his time promoting a high-school band called The Lemon Drops. He wrote another LSD inspired song titled "I Live In The Springtime" for the band. Unfortunately, the single was unable to chart, even regionally. Over the ensuing decades though, the reputation of The Lemon Drops, The Nuchez, The Nite-Owls and other Rembrandt artists has grown immeasurably. This compilation contains all the singles issued on Rembrandt Records from 1966-1967, plus many previously unreleased versions and mixes that are appearing for the first time ever. The twenty-two recordings on this album make it apparent that Rembrandt Records was way ahead of its time when these treasures from the psychedelic 60s were recorded. COMP CD $10 SKU:12121
AMON DÜÜL - PARADIESWARTZ DUUL-legendary 1971 Krautrock Label:WAH WAH Recorded in 1971, Amon Düül’s only album for Ohr was a visonary slice of acid-folk which has gained cult status as years passed by. Ritualistic folk-rock, pastoral hippie songs, stoned jams, eastern flavours, mystical passages and heavy hypnotic riffing which are in fact very different from the early Amon Düül epic freaked-out improvisations (Psychedelic Underground) or Amon Düül II complex and psyched-up progressive works (Phallus Dei). ANTORCHAS, LAS - ST -ultra-rare 60s Mexican psych w. liner notes, and a poster insert that replicates the Orfeon EP art) - Label:VAM MEXICO Las Antorchas were formed in 1965 by five college students in Mexico City. They released only one EP on Orfeon, but had recorded enough material for an album. They split around 1968/69, but after a line-up change they continued under the name of Antorcha. Thanks to the persistence of VAM Records and record producer Manuel Alvarez Valdez, we now have all known material of Las Antorchas, including their Orfeon material. Their early sounds are rock/beat influenced, with most relying on organ and vocals. But the excellent ‘Dime’ is a really great acid-punk track. Truly underground Mexican rock, waiting to be discovered. This edition has liner notes, and a poster insert that replicates the Orfeon EP art LP $17 SKU:15111

SPOILS OF WAR - ST (PRE MORMOS PSYCH )60s DOUBLE-LP with POP-UP GATEFOLD SLEEVE and a BONUS 7-INCH! Label:WAH WAH A fantastic release offering the complete late '60s recordings from US pre-MORMOS outfit SPOILS OF WAR. Before relocating to France, where he formed the highly regarded prog/psych-folk unit MORMOS in the early '70s, American musician James Cuomo was the creative force of The Spoils Of War. This interesting band combined psychedelic rock with adventurous electronic experimentation, comparable to f.i. The United States Of America/Joe Byrd And The Field Hippies and 50 Foot Hose, with a dash of folkrock due to the contributions from female vocalist Annie Hat. Back in the day the band only released two rare 7-inches, but thanks to the -now out of print- releases from Shadoks Records, Spoils Of War achieved cult status afterall. Now this deluxe Wah-Wah Records double-LP collects the remastered '60s studio recordings from the band, complete with previously unissued material, making for a splendid release. Also included are a repress of the debut 7-inch, a sticker, full colour pix, and liner notes from Jim Cuomo and Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby). MEDIA- BRIGHT NEW FUTURE (YELLOW) (1978 UK punk style) SAALE!~Label:LOVE CHILD The Media were a Portsmouth band formed in 1978, influenced by the UK punk explosion of 1977. The Media played loads of shows, honed their '60s beat meets '70s street/seminal suburban songs, got a bit good, built a large following, released two singles and by 1980 were featured in a youth TV series called 'Going Out'. What could possibly go wrong? Their debut EP 'No Darling I Love The Media' appeared in 1978 on their own Tearaway Records (Cherry Red Records distributed it). A second single, 'Southcoast City Rockers' and 'Back On The Beach' came out the following year on the Portsmouth collective Brain Booster Records. The single showed the band moving on musically, taking in elements of the UK's emerging ska scene (led by The Specials' Two Tone label) and the Mod revival inspired by The Jam. On the back of the money they were paid for the 'Going Out' TV series, the band went in the studio with the aim of recording songs for an album - 9 songs were completed. But, trouble at one of their support slots led to the cancellation of a series of gigs, including a prominent London show, and the band split in 1981. Fast forward 37 years and the master tapes from that album session were found by a band member in their loft. On the advice of Acid Attack's Dave Clarke the tape is sent to Paul Orwell at Love Child Records, who in turn played it to Adam Cooper of parent company Heavy Soul Records, both of these uber music fans gave it a massive thumbs up. So now 40 years after release of first Media EP the album 'Bright New Future' is now available LP $24 SKU:23200
METABOLISME -Tempus Fugit ( 1977 French prog )SAALE!-Label:REPLICA (France): First inspired by hard-rock as played by Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, the band then discovered the works of Uriah Heep. With the help of keyboards player Thierry Scaduto, a symphonic touch added a nice aspect to the music. Under the influence of Genesis, Yes and Premiata Forneria Marconi, Metabolisme changed its musical style to play Progressive rock. Signed to RCA's Crypto sub-label, Metabolisme were great at dark atmospheres, processed fuzzy guitars and lost vocals. When they burst out of a slow number and rip into a tight ensemble piece you might hear touches of Arachnoid. The spacey Pink Floyd atmosphere recalls Pulsar, especially at the time of "Pollen" . The album opens with the longest track, nearly 16 minutes of pure delight, featuring two lush keybords passages and great guitar chops. One instrumental track, 'Tempus,' shows that they were capable to creat great prog rock, with captivating guitar keyboard parts. Released as late as 1977, the album didn't stand a chance of making it to a larger audience in a time in which punk rock started its devastating heyday. The music offered on the album was far to fine- drawn for the period in which it was released. Still, Metabolisme's "Tempus Fugit," their one and only album, is a treasure for those who love lush organs in the style of Yes, sophisticated guitars Uriah Heep and French vocals a la Mona Lisa. Is that you? then you need to buy this record. LP $19 SKU:21016
METAPHYSICAL ANIMATION-ST SAALE! (ultra obscure Floridan psych/prog 1973
) DBL Label:BLACK WIDOW Reissue of an ultra obscure Floridan psych/prog album from 1973. Less than 50 copies were pressed at the time, housed in a plain white demo sleeve with the band name hand-written in pen on the cover. Classic '70s prog, with significant elements of fusion and psychedelic rock. Sometimes it sounds like a take on 'Close To The Edge'. Other times it sounds like Rick Wakeman briefly joined Pink Floyd during the 'Wish You Were Here' sessions. And then there are the tracks that sound like a looser, more electrified Graham Bond Organization. LP $25 SKU:21510
MODIFICACION -ST( 1971 heavy underground psych/prog rock)-Label:MUNSTER This heavy underground psych/prog rock band from Valencia, Spain, released two sought after singles in 1971 and 1973 respectively, plus a further promotional 7-inch in 1974. GENERATORS - Welcome to the End (1997 L.A punkers) - Label:TRIPLE X The origin of Los Angeles’ influential punk band The Generators dates back to 1997, just a few miles from the skyscrapers of downtown. In the early days, the band hung out and wrote music in an old vacant pizza oven factory, churning out their first batch of songs, which echoed the sentiments of the 1977 Punk spirit. They quickly got attention from the owners of the infamous Triple X Records, who were known best for their 1980’s roster that included Social Distortion, The Vandals, GBH and Jane’s Addiction. Without haste, the indie punk label put The Generators into the recording studio where they produced their first album ironically titled Welcome To The End. CD $5 SKU:22791

GOLDBERG
-Misty Flats (Privately pressed loner-folk gem 1974)Label:LITA Barry Thomas Goldberg was 23 in 1974, the year his Minneapolis power pop group, The Batch, split up. Rudderless, he set about recording solo album Misty Flats, and though few would hear it in its day, he hit on something very special indeed. Where The Batch were a harmony-drenched power pop band in the mold of Big Star and The Rubinoos, Misty Flats was an album of ecstatic desolation, an unhinged loner-folk gem that came from a unique place: “I wanted to make the first punk rock album, and if I’d recorded those songs with a band, maybe that’s what it would’ve been,” Goldberg says. CD $10 SKU:24177
GOLDEN GRASS - ST (70s style power trio)-Label:SVART Debut album! Special LP replica sleeve. The glory of American hard rock has returned with the debut eponymous album by THE GOLDEN GRASS! This Brooklyn-based power-trio is the real deal, and their LP harkens back to the golden age when heavy rock music was upbeat, skillfully played, energetic, edgy, and bursting with goodtime sunshine vibes. They come hard with a strong backbone of deep-pocket funky flare and an earnest/uplifting southern/country/mountain rock vibe, layered with waves of psychedelic textures that explode into jaw-dropping proto-metal moves. And throughout their progressive arrangements and timeless grooves are lush and powerfully delivered vocals, stacked with gorgeous harmonies and maddeningly catchy verses and choruses singing the tales of real-life loves, losses, and the drive to keep on keepin on! This album is a sure treat for fans of classic underground hard rock such as Truth and Janey, Dust, and Josefus as well as fans of classic UK psychedelia such as The Move, The Pretty Things, and Mighty Baby. THE GOLDEN GRASS will also greatly appeal to folks into the contemporary sounds of Danava, Horisont, Graveyard, and Dead Man. CD $10 SKU:20128

GONZALEZ, WALLY -Tunog Pinoy (heavy acid blues psych Pink Floyd style)Label:VICOR ENTERTAINMENT (Philippines) Just listening to the soaring solos of the third track, ‘Pinag-isa’, makes us think how much this sounds like Pink Floyd circa “Dark Side of the Moon”—atmospheric, with breathy vocals, yet thick with that mid-70’s heavy energy at the same time; then you get to ‘Rock & Roll Mama’, and it’s stinging guitar leads and crunching rhythm section all the way; Gonzalez clearly was not a one trick (heavy acid blues rock) pony, which explains why this album has always been held in such high regard among those who had a chance to hear it. CD $10 SKU:18971
GONZALEZ, WALLY -Wally on the Road 70s (heavy acid blues psych)-Label:VICOR ENTERTAINMENT (Philippines) First off, don’t be deceived by the title—this is a studio album all the way; altogether a different sort of album from “Tunog Pinoy”, thudding out of the gate with the monumental ‘Kailan Pa Kaya’, syrupy treated vocals, John Bonham-esque drumming and all; dig too, if you will, the Zeppelin vibe of ‘Screw’ before sailing into the trippy, acoustic ‘Tattong Araw’, or the legendary ‘Wally’s Blues’; more effects than the earlier record, sounding more like newfound recordings from the late 1960’s than a mid-70’s record—this has more psychedelic credentials than most reissues which get that label bestowed upon them; you might say that while “Tunog Pinoy” is classic rock in the best sense, this is classic psychedelia, in the best sense. Straightforward and soul-searing, the tune is a harbinger of the full album’s truth-seeking and deep honesty. – POPMATTERS CD $10 SKU:21571

GREEN PAJAMAS- SUMMER OF LUST (former Bomp band!) SAALE! -Label:GREEN MONKEY In 1984 Jeff Kelly and Joe Ross recorded a mess of songs on a 4-track reel-to-reel up in Joe's attic. They released it locally as a cassette, 'Summer Of Lust'. If you hear the Pajamas referred to as psyche-anything it springs from here. We are making Summer of Lust available to the public for the first time in twenty-two years. About time. What you get here is two young guys filled with wild inspiration. Nothing slick. Nothing professional. Just beautiful. How did we get here? GMR Prez Dyer bought the cassette in 1984. Loved it. Called em up. Re-released the cassette. In 1989, Greg Shaw from Bomp started Ubik records in the UK and released it on vinyl to underground acclaim. After that, obscurity. Joe Ross has threatened to release it on his own Endgame label for years, but the threats were idle. 2012 is time to get it done. Remastered by Tom Dyer and Joe Ross, Summer of Lust shows Kelly and Ross at the brilliant stepping off point for over twenty-five albums to come. Raw. Simple and complex at the same time. If you love The Green Pajamas, you need this. If this is your first time, start the grand adventure here. Release features extensive liner notes. ALL MUSIC REVIEW
And for some, the endless series of punk revivals means...fun. And not the kind the Algonquin Round Table went on about. Guitarist Blackie, bassist Ray, and newish drummer Pete went into a studio again and proceeded to do exactly what they love doing, which is of course why Very Exciting! is such a fun album. If you don't like catchy punk-pop in any version, never mind and steer clear, but otherwise this is grand, ridiculous, and just wanky enough (after all, what else to call the chugging solos and the like in "Sunny," the winningly sung kickoff to the whole thing?). The idea of the Hard-Ons being reflective may cause bemusement in some corners, but it's the easygoing singing on songs like "Killing Me" and "Caravan Man" and the high harmonies on "Olympic Diver" and "Race Track" that gives the band a great reason to keep on keeping on. Not that Blackie can't be as blunt and brutal as needed -- the grindcore metal parody kicking off "Cat's Got Your Tongue" may be a bit late, but dang if it isn't hilarious anyway (and making the rest of the song a merry singalong is all the more fun). Then there's the rather foul-mouthed trading off of numbers on "Race Track," its own form of a cappella goodness. Calling one song "Punk Police" and making it a merry trashing of the "self-righteous" title characters may not be as political as the Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks Fuck Off," but clearly the sentiment is the same. Best song title, even if the sentiments aren't universally agreed with? "(Everytime I Hear) Techno (I Pray for Death)" -- though logically the band follows that up with "Breakfast Caramel," a sweet motorik/new wave chug that's perfectly danceable too. CD $10 SKU:23237

STRIP-O-RAMA + CD- Vol 3 (Scandalous 50s and 60s strip morsels!)SAALE! Label:JUKEBOX MUSIC FACTORY Perhaps the densest (and most scandalous) compilation yet by the ever daring El Vidocq. Already a third folding album that opens to teasingly reveal more sumptuous "strip music" morsels. Indeed, the 1950s and '60s represent an inexhaustible source of delicious tunes, most of which just never hit it off with the media or masses. Once again, our indefatigable connoisseur raises the curtain on an arousing series of smooth tunes, with their languid rhythms, well-rounded melodies and cheeky grooves. An exciting mix of styles struts its stuff in various states of undress: rockabilly (Rusty & Doug Kershaw, Clyde Stacy), pop (Betty Reilly, Ella Johnson), crooner (Louis Jordan), rock (Chuck Miller), swing jazz (Joanie Sommers), burlesque (The Ramcocks), r'n'b (Gino Parks)... An eminently naughty selection of musical gems to peel off one by one. COMP LP $19 SKU:20715

Brilliant retro release of 'Crazy Price', remastered for vinyl by Oleg himself and includes the amazingly wigged out 'Fantomasophobia'. 14 tracks of mind bending instro madness. '3 Minutes To Massacre' is a play on Lee Hazlewood and Duane Eddy's 'Girl On Death Row'. 'Ghost Rider To West' is a tremolo heavy rocker with a rather speedy double bass break! 'Satan Jeans' is a straight up lift of 'Radioactive Kid'... but not as you know it! The usual eclectic mix of surf, rockabilly, jazz beats, B-movie samples, lounge and and a pretty warped mind putting them altogether. Originally released on CD only in 2003 by Solnze. Mondo Drag has shared the stage with bands such as Witchcraft, Dead Meadow, Pentagram, and Radio Moscow, to name just a few. "They rock. Most songs clock in at over 6 minutes, yet you don't notice the time go by because they seem to take that long just to rev up. MORE KICKS - ST (60s garage/ power pop style) Label:BELUGA More Kicks is an explosion of pop melodies, jet-fuelled guitar riffs and shifting, sinewy rhythms. The band arrived from nowhere -seemingly fully formed- at the end of 2017 on London's garage scene. They immediately stood out a mile thanks to their unique mix of pop sensibilities, rhythm & blues bass and good-time powerpop drums. Hidden away making loud music in tiny rooms, the trio (Sulli - vox/guitar; Kris - drums; Paolo - bass/vox) had been busy cooking up a rare alchemy. The result: a two-and-a-half-minute More Kicks song can touch on classic '60s garage, '70s NYC rock and roll, jagged '90s guitar pop - all wrapped in a razor sharp bundle. A glance backwards and a decisive step forward. LP $19 SKU:22281

NERVES One Way Ticket (70S POWERPOP LEGENDS!) STARBURST VINYLLabel:ALIVE Formed in 1975 by guitarist JACK LEE, bassist PETER CASE, and drummer PAUL COLLINS, the Nerves are one of the most influential garage/punk pop outfits to come out of the mid-70's LA scene, and certainly one of the least documented... until now. Mostly remembered for their classic "Hanging On The Telephone," a Jack Lee composition which has been covered over the years by a myriad of artists from BLONDIE to L7 to CAT POWER, the Nerves were above all a high energy rock'n'roll band with all three members composing and singing. Playing fast, ear-catching garage pop songs, sometimes wearing matching suits, the trio had more than a bit of the stripped down street energy of the Los Angeles's early punk movement. They shared the stage with the Ramones and Mink Deville during their infamous US "Magical Blistering Tour," played the Punk Palace and the legendary Masque in Hollywood, and headlined shows with the Avengers, the Zeros, The Dils, The Screamers and Shock, to name just a few. After the band's break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS, and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively. Following the success of "Hanging On the Telephone," JACK LEE has mostly focused on his songwriting career, releasing an album in 1981. Both Peter and Paul are still recording and touring. PETER CASE's latest album "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John" (Yeproc 2007) was nominated for a Grammy. This collection, authorized for the first time ever by the three band members, features their 1976 EP (now regarded as a power pop classic), as well as demos and previously unreleased live recordings, REMASTERED and complete with notes and photos. A last hurrah worthy to the L.A.M.F. legacy." — Alan di Perna (Guitar World, Guitar Aficionado)."These recordings were made in September of ’91, half way between Johnny [Thunders’] death, and Jerry’s own demise.
