OLIVERS - I Saw What You Did-Label:BREAK A WAY BW BEEKER ST. Single Release with original Picture Sleeve: "The Olivers, from Fort Wayne, Indiana evolved out of the Serfmen, a very popular band in the region, that had already released two nowadays rare 45's on their own Nemfres label. When the Serfmen signed with Dino Enterprises, an Indianabased agency in 1966, original member Greg Church left the band and was replaced by Billy Franze from another local group, The Unexpected. The Band then moved in a more British invasion direction for their music and outfit and changed name to "The Olivers". The line-up at the time consisted of Jay Penndorf (guitar, vocals), Chuck Hamrick (drums), Carl Aldrich (keyboards, vocals) and Billy Franze (bass, vocals). The group's sole 7" release, 'I Saw What You Did' b/w 'Beeker Street' was recorded at Cap Studios in Portage, MI and was released with a Picture Sleeve later that year on the local Phalanx Label. The single got picked up by RCA Records for nationwide release and is rated today as one of the best and most exciting double sided major label garage 45s of the 1960s. BRAINTICKET - COTTONWOODHILL (ACID PSYCH 1971 (+CD)Label:LILITH Repress! On 180-gram vinyl and coming with a bonus CD of the album. Being as LSD was first developed in a laboratory in Basel, it is perhaps no coincidence that one of the most "far out" albums of all time was made by this Swiss band (no small feat, given the competition!). Brainticket's 1971 debut, 'Cottonwoodhill', begins normally enough with two fine psychedelic/kraut rock-influenced tracks, but the remainder of the album plays like an acid trip with a soundtrack, dominated by Joel Vandroogenbroeck's endless droning organ, a variety of musique concrète-type sound effects and vocalist Dawn Muirs trippy vocals. The album, banned in several countries, even came with this self-imposed warning: "After Listening to this Record, your friends may not know you anymore." / "Only listen to this once a day, your brain might be destroyed!". It was the second Electric Moon gig. During the soundcheck Lulu came up with the riff for the song 'Doomsday Machine' which was used in the concert, so this is the first played and recorded version of that song, which later became the title track of the band's second album. TWILIGHTERS -NOTHING CAN BRING ME DOWN (60s Texas garage psych monster) -Label:MILKCOW This wonderful reissue comes with a '60s styled company-sleeve and a postcard. Back on 7-inch, here's a brain melting Texas garage psych monster from 1968. 'Nothing Can Bring Me Down' became an instant cult hit when it started appearing on garage punk comps, and Pussy Galore and others bashed out their cover versions. The Twilighters recorded this sole 45 at a club named Mark VII, also the name of the record label. When the guys entered the recording space they only had one original song, the moody garage ballad 'I Need You'. Front man Jay White wrote 'Nothing...' on the spot, since the single also needed a flip. However, the result, a fuzzed up mixture of psych à la Hendrix and Cream, and '60s punk, was so exciting that it became the A-side. 45 RPM $12 SKU:18372

Undoubtedly the most exciting mid sixties garage album to be recently discovered in the genre, is that by The Horde from North Carolina. The existence of this self produced album came to collectors ears and eyes only about a year ago. It was recorded more or less accidently in early 1967, released in a micro quantity of only 25 copies and among the local US garage albums of the decade it is one of the few eclectic examples with all the ingredients that makes it outstanding compared with the usual prep-school albums of the time. It contains a blend of exciting originals and well chosen, inspired covers, played in a raw, crude and frantic style. If ever it were true that the over-used assertion that a band's cover versions measured up to the originals, then it is true of The Horde. Why? These five 19-20 year old students from all over the United States did not only blaze a trail for 60s rock in then conservative North Carolina, they also had a general attitude that finds its origins in the young peoples mindset of the mid-sixties that put them outside of the local mainstream and gained them a sort of regional underground popularity.
