TOBY TWIRL- ST (60s PSYCH) Label:MEGA DODO Seeing that 60s Psychedelia really didn’t hit the UK provinces full on until 1970, there was always a flip side to Swinging London. For every band of dilettante acid dandies freaking out at the Roundhouse or getting it together in the country there were a dozen hard gigging bands playing the northern clubs and discotheques every weekend. Apart from a few isolated pockets outside of the groovy epicenter, the fall out from the Summer Of Love was a London thing…………that’s where the really ambitious bands had to base themselves, however seeing that the Pop charts were full of hip tunes, a watered down version of Psychedelia seeped into almost every town in the UK. There were loads of venues and a load of bands available to play them……….they were hardworking professional musicians who could make a decent living mixing a dash of cabaret and comedy with a set of Freakbeat/Psych tinged pop tunes and if they were lucky they would be given an opportunity to record a single. Toby Twirl were one such band, originally from Newcastle they were playing regular gigs between 1968 until 1971……..they had the threads but were slightly uncool and no doubt the closest they came to a psychedelic experience was the hallucinogenic effects of Newcastle Brown Ale, but by the sound of their long overdue debut album they could really tear up a dancefloor on a Saturday night in Blackburn. The tapes of previously thought lost demo and showcase recordings were recently discovered by the band's drummer, John Reed, which have been carefully transferred to a digital medium and professionally mastered.

BLACKLAND- EXTREME HEAVY PSYCH (STONER ROCK)-Label:BLOODROCK The BLACKLAND musical idea was born in 2001 under the previous name of WIZARD (which is kept until 2005), with willer Donadoni (guitar/voice), Nicola "CYNAR" Rossi (drums) and Carlo Gagliardi (bass). Each one of them came from different musical bands playing other standards (HOPELESS, DIRTY POWER GAME, SAMA). The band is turned to exeperiments at the beginning: sounds of stoner and rock music are fused with the typical reflexive mysticism of doom, and its by those atmospheres that songs take their origin, by the extemporization and the convergency of each own personal background. Exhibitions are first characterized by a long and confused repertory, most of them took place in squats, occuped spaces and others underground spheres in Rome and in the rest of Italy (without producing any record or demo). The band goes on with its works of composing until it reaches a certain stylistic coherence, from which in 2005 the recording of its first full-length: EVIL OF MANKIND. During that period of work all members follow different projects in the mean time (such as the GRIMNESS, DPG, DOOMRAISER), which are characterized by differents styles but united in the same dispositions flowintogether. Nowadays, in 2006, the idea is evolving into the uninterrupted research of its own personal style of creating. Carlo bassist leaves the band in March 2007. The band stops for few months and in 2007, enters Daniale "Pinna" Amatori already drummer doomsters DOOMRAISER. With the new formation the band launch a new style sounds likely looking at space-rock. When writing the album, the band drew inspiration from "Lovecraft, Robert E Howard, Edison's second book "Mistress Of Mistresses" and both Norse and Indian mythology", while a big influence as far as source material was Grant Morrison's "The Invisibles", the popular comic book series with a plot that follows (more or less) a single cell of "The Invisible College", a secret organization "battling against physical and psychic oppression using time travel, magic, meditation and violence." With the exception of the title track, all songs are group originals and the song writing is simply amazing. Considering this is a so-called exploitation album, the band has a stunning musical quality, which made the LP sought after and highly prized by collectors over the years. Both these recordings were not included on the original album, but ended up on another exploitation album the same people did under the moniker 31st Flavours for the same label. MCCRAE, GEORGE - ST (1975 R&B) LAST COPIES Label:BIG BREAK Following thehuge success of "Rock Your Baby," Grammy Award Nominee, George McRae released his self-titled solo effort in 1975. While the album was well received in the US, placing on the Billboard Hot 200 Pop chart and #24 on the US R&B chart, it was the in the UK where it was particularly well received. The firstsingle, 'Sing a Happy Song,' reached the top 40; it was followed by 'It's Been So Long,' with its killer drum beat, fantastic horn section and of course McRae's trademark smooth and incredibly soulful voice. This single charted to an incredible #4 in the UK and stayed in the charts for an impressive 11 weeks! I Ain't Lying continued the chart success, reaching #12 on the UK pop charts of October 1975; 'Honey I' was a final top 40 hit from the album, charting in the beginning of 1976. MOUSTAKI ,GEORGES - Le Concert (French 50s/60s outsider) LAST COPIESLabel:PAZZAZZ (Germany) lAthough he achieved his greatest fame in France, singing French-language songs in a distinctly French style, singer/songwriter Georges Moustaki was more a citizen of the world—or, as he often put it a “citizen of the French language.’ Christening himself a cultural “mongrel" in his signature hit ’Le Métèque," Moustaki’s first love was the classic-style French chanson—but he often appropriated world folk music from Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Brazil (bossa nova and MPB), Argentina (tango) and other parts of Latin America, the United States (blues and jazz), and anywhere else his travels took him. Simplicity was a hallmark of many of his own recordings; possessed of a soft, warm voice, he often sang with only his own guitar for accompaniment, creating an intimacy that translated to his live gigs as well. A successful artist in his own right, Moustaki initially made his name as a songwriter of some renown, composing material for many of the top French singers of the late '50s and ’60s, his one-time lover Édith Piaf (including the massive hit ‘Milord’), Barbara, Brigitte Fontaine, Dalida (including ‘Gigi l'amoroso’), France Gall, and Cindy Daniel. PRINCIPAL EDWARDS MAGIC THEATRE- Asmoto Running Band (late 60s John Peel fave) LAST COPIES Label:CHERRY RED he multi-media Principal Edwards Magic Theatre cut a compellingly original swathe through a late-1960s music scene seemingly inhabited by wall-to-wall blues bands. Their first ever gig was witnessed by benefactor and producer John Peel. The legendary DJ promptly signed them to his Dandelion label. ‘I guess he liked what he heard,’ says guitarist and chief songwriter Root Cartwright. A stand-alone single released before the first album, ‘Ballad (Of The Big Girl Now And A Mere Boy)’/ ‘Lament For The Earth’, is included in this package as a bonus track. ‘Soundtrack’ hit the record racks in August 1969, the third Dandelion long-player to be released. The sometimes whimsical, sometimes epic (verging on progressive rock) writing style of guitarist Root Cartwright, was paired with the eclectic lyrical contributions of David Jones, Gillian Hadley and Monica Nettles, and was performed by vocalist Vivienne McAuliffe. SOFT MACHINE-Tales of Taliesin: The EMI Years Anthology 1975-1981 DOUBLE CD- LAST COPIES- -Label:ESOTERIC Esoteric Recordings have pleasure in announcing the release of a new deluxe double CD anthology, "Tales of Taliesen." If there was any period of this now-legendary British group's history that had a certain element of consistency (in approach, if not lineup) it was the final, fusion years from 1975-1981. "Tales of Taliesin: The EMI Years Anthology 1975-1981" collects material from the group's final four albums, also including "Softs" (1976) and "Alive & Well: Recorded in Paris' (1978), and if there's no bonus material to entice completists who have already picked up Esoteric's fine remasters, it's certainly a well-chosen entry point. On the plus side, Tales of Taliesin includes one of jazz-rock's defining moments: guitarist Allan Holdsworths six-minute solo on "Bundles'" 'Hazard Profile.' A marvel of extended construction, it's not Holdsworth's first major recorded moment—but it's a remarkable, breathtaking combination of occasional economies and viscerally choked off notes, peppered amidst furious cascades of notes that show Holdsworth's touchstones to be more saxophone than guitar, specifically John Coltrane's renowned "sheets of sound." Sid Smith's "set the record straight" liner notes effectively counterbalances the often prevailing notion that the Karl Jenkins-led Softs were Soft Machine in name only, and when Allan Holdsworth unleashes his utterly relentless guitar solo from Bundles, you are likely to be as wowed as any mid-'70s Softs fan who was willing to give the band's then-newest lineup a try. And there are certainly key tracks here: 'Bundles,' 'The Tale of Taliesin,' 'Out of Season,' the live 'Odds Bullets and Blades, Pts. 1-2' and 'Huffin'', that demonstrate not only the skill of the musicians, but also how Jenkins tailored his composing, with its tricky meters, thematic and melodic sensibilities, and spacy floating synth interludes, to a Soft Machine sound that arguably harked all the way back to the landmark "Third. STRAWBS -Deep Cuts (1976 Dylanesque) LAST COPIES-Label:WITCHWOOD MEDIA ncludes the UK smash single I Only Want My Love to Grow In You and contains some of the strongest songs the band ever recorded. This popular album from 1976 has been re-mastered from the original tapes and includes a previously unreleased bonus track. Tony Mitchell, reviewing for Sounds in their 25 September 1976 issue: "Strawbs have a distinctive style, accreditable to founder member Dave Cousins... Cousins' presence is as powerful as it has ever been; he dominates both the writing ... and the singing, drawing on the other members of the band for back up vocals only. ... Deep Cuts is characterised by a sense of drama; many of the songs have strong story lines... with a moralistic or allegorical content reminiscent of contemporary folk music, or perhaps more accurately of the mid-to-late Sixties era when songsmiths like Dylan and Baez dominated... This is none too surprising since the roots of the original Strawbs lay very much in that era and that kind of music. But this is definitely rock music... undoubtedly enhanced by the guitar work of that other old Strawbs Dave Lambert and the rhythmic patterns generated by Chas Cronk and percussionist Rod Coombes. Indeed the choice of ''I Only Want My Love To Grow' as first track... seems to say 'Here we are, we're a rock band' but the following track 'Turn Me Round' has Cousins in more classical form with Dylanesque vocals and slurred phrasing, saying, if you like, 'but we're still the Strawbs'" All in all, concludes Mitchell, "an album which will not disappoint Strawbs fans and probably get them a good few more. STRAWBS - New York 75 LAST COPIES -Label:WITCHWOOD MEDIA In the mid-1970s the Strawbs were on a roll in the United States. The band had had five consecutive albums on the Billboard charts between 1972 and 1975, with "Hero and Heroine" and "Ghosts" between them selling over half a million copies. In 1975 Strawbs set out on their first US headline tour. "NY '75" was recorded live in front of a wildly enthusiastic audience at the legendary Calderone Theatre on Long Island. This is the first release of this concert on CD. Following John Hawken's departure, Cousins, Lambert, Cronk, Coombes were augmented by Robert Kirby (best known for his arrangements on the Nick Drake albums) and John Mealing (formerly with jazz-rock supergroup If), both on keyboards. The album shows how the Strawbs stage show had evolved from its early folk-inspired tunes into an almost continuous symphonic sequence of hard-hitting songs. The Strawbs came on stage in a blackout to a long-lost taped introduction, 'Still Small Voice.' Among the established classics were new offerings from the "Nomadness" album including 'The Promised Land,' 'To Be Free,' and 'Hanging In The Gallery' which have never appeared before on a live Strawbs album.
