MCCRAE, GEORGE - ST (1975 R&B) LAST COPIES Label:BIG BREAK Following thehuge success of "Rock Your Baby," Grammy Award Nominee, George McRae released his self-titled solo effort in 1975. While the album was well received in the US, placing on the Billboard Hot 200 Pop chart and #24 on the US R&B chart, it was the in the UK where it was particularly well received. The firstsingle, 'Sing a Happy Song,' reached the top 40; it was followed by 'It's Been So Long,' with its killer drum beat, fantastic horn section and of course McRae's trademark smooth and incredibly soulful voice. This single charted to an incredible #4 in the UK and stayed in the charts for an impressive 11 weeks! PAUPERS - Magic People (60s Byrds style) Label:PACEMAKER The Paupers, along with the Guess Who, were one of the first Canadian bands to capitalize on the British Invasion. Their early sound was a classy mixture of roots music, blues and folk-rock (think early Byrds or Lovin Spoonful. Great great work by The Paupers essentially a 60s folk rock combo, but one with a really groovy sound! The group come up with loads of great guitar interplay on the session -- janging acoustic and electric together in a style that comes up with some nice hippie and eastern edges -- and which means that even on the vocal tracks, the album's got an instrumental charm that kind of links it to some of the hipper rock/jazz crossover projects on labels like Verve and Impulse at the time. FOLKAL POINT- ST (70s RARITY) Label:MIDAS RECORDINGS/HOXA Lost in fire and flood and remastered from original vinyl, now fetching as much as $1,416, 'Folkal Point' (the official release, and the only one with the bonus track) represents a moment in time, captured for all time. Only 250 of the original available ever, and only 500 of this special edition were made. And now, this self-titled album, from its somewhat obscure origins rises again, through the determination and meticulous work carried out by Hoxa Sound and The Vinyl Factory. That original sense of ambition is now a collective sense of satisfaction. Beware unauthorised remasters! The band can make something if you buy the Hoxa edition, having made nothing out of any others for the last 46 years. The recording of this album did constitute a milestone in the career of Folkal Point, but not one that could ever have been anticipated. And what was achieved in that relatively brief period of the early 1970s has truly lasted a lifetime. 'Folkal Point' is a diverse, yet well balanced, collection of folk music stretching from a dark otherworldly place to a more enlightened modern time. LP $22 SKU:20250

FRISCH, HANS - Levende Opjekten Sjooo (1969 Batshit crazy acidhead) Label:GOLDEN PAVILION Mutant Sounds blog says
Batshit crazy acidhead bedazzlement from the heyday of the Dutch counterculture, with the free rock/free improv spirit summoning unleashed by this band of furry freaks begging comparison with the earliest and most shamanistically summoning wing of the Krautrock continuum from Amon Duul to Limbus 4 to Anima. It's a stance which makes their sound far more musically prescient and less time-bound than most anything else emanating from Holland at the time; their unfettered roundelays of bongos, flutes, horns, percussive clatter and wailing avant vocals offering direct pointers toward the sort of sounds currently embodied by the Finnish free rock and improv scene. The pics of half naked Dionysian abandon enclosed and the knowledge that part of this edition was seized by the Dutch police elevate the actions of these cultural provocateurs to an even higher level. An album to be relished.

FROZEN PLANET-1969(YELLOW/GREEN) THE HEAVY MEDICINAL.(Australian psych-/jam-rockers) Label: HEADSPIN The Australian psych-/jam-rockers ..GRAND EXPOSITION: A HERBAL MIRACLE' - The sixth album by Frozen Planet....1969 is another improvised heavy-psyched-out instrumental adventure. This time however, the music invokes the spirit of the old travelling medicine shows. This is a return to the "concept album" by the band (their first three albums were also concept albums). The tracklisting is quite simple, but the concept and layout is much more complex. Two tracks; the title-track as track one, lasting an entertaining thirty-nine and a half minutes, followed by a neat little "encore" of about six minutes. Track one is of course spread over two sides for the vinyl edition due to playing-time restrictions. However, the fade-out at the end of side one could be viewed as a lead into an intermission! The parts of the title-track serve as the acts of the show. The band takes twists and turns to help guide you through the story, while Doctor Berner is on a quest to sell bottles of his glowing green elixir with the help of some colourful characters. This is all illustrated in a wonderful vintage comicbook style. Simply follow the program inside the gatefold and you'll have a grand old time! 200 copies on yellow green vinyl. LP $19 SKU:20488

GILA - Night Works (1971 psych rock masterpiece) Label:GARDEN OF DELIGHTS (Germany): Gila is probably the GOD label's best or second-best known artist. And deservedly so... their eponymous 1971 debut album (known as 'Free Electric Sound') is a psychedelic rock masterpiece. The same foursome (fronted by guitarist/vocalist Conny Veit, who later had a stint with Guru Guru) then recorded a concert for radio, broadcast on 26 Feb 1972. This was subsequently edited down to 43 minutes—adly that is all that still exists of the show. Released here as "Night Works," it captures a different dimension of the band in a live setting. On tracks like ‘Braintwist’ and the wonderfully cosmic ‘Gila Symphony,’ the group comes across much like the Doors doing their own “Space Ritual.” However, the overall mix of textures ends up sounding very Germanic in the end; for example, the outstanding ‘Trampelpfad’ simply couldn't have been created by an American group. The source tape isn't perfect (a few noticeable dropouts now and again) but we’re glad that the magnificence of this single performance is still preserved. All of the tracks included here are unique to “Night Works,” making it a true second album by the band’s original lineup. Cover artwork was painted by Gila guitarist Conny Veit himself. The 12-page LP-sized booklet contains an extremely elaborate history of the band in German, English and Swedish, a very meticulous discography, numerous cover and label repros, many so far unseen Gila photographs, leaving nothing left to be desired. The Perry/Marley collaboration resulted in some all-time classics, tracks which many fans consider to be the very best work either of them ever did! A genius band, and a genius producer, finding their way, with simple arrangements, a churning, driving sound largely missing from Marley's more famous efforts, and beautiful high harmonies from Peter Tosh. Not a mere historical footnote, for the music here is highly creative and original—soulful perfection. This collection combines several of the Perry tracks (‘Sun Is Shining,’ ‘Duppy Conqueror,’ ‘African Herbsman,’ ‘Mr. Brown’) with those produced by Leslie Kong (‘Soul Shakedown Party’) and by the Wailers themselves (‘Trench Town Rock,’ ‘Lively Up Yourself,’ both of which were originally released on the group's own Tuff Gong label). MAYFIELD'S MULE - ST (60s Brit pop psych )Label:NIGHTWINGS Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter CHRIS MAYFIELD began to play at the beginning of the Sixties in local Kent band The MORAL SET, then went on to the usual plethora of bands and sessions, playing with the earliest NIRVANA, JOHN GUSTAFSON, GENE LATTER and IAN HUNTER among the others. In 1968 after a few disappointing musical adventures, Chris joined AMEN CORNER as a roadie/driver, but his girlfriend passed some of his demos to Amen's sax player, MIKE SMITH, who immediately got them to various labels, EMI approved and immediately signed Chris to a recording deal. PETE SAUNDERS (k), STEVE BRADLEY (b) and ex-ELASTIC BAND SEAN JENKINS (d) soon joined and MAYFIELD's MULE was born. Three Parlophone singles were recorded in a few months and the band also began to work on an album at Abbey Road studios. But something went wrong and the LP was apparently shelved, gaining instead an incredible Uruguayan release on local Emi-Odeon label, without any involvement and knowledge from the band. Mayfield's Mule went on for a while longer, recruiting brothers MIKE and ANDY SCOTT, and then called it a day. While Sean Jenkins played a few months with HENRY COW and Andy Scott resurfaced in The SWEET, Chris Mayfield joined forces with JOHN KONGOS to record some demos of his new material. He then met up with an old friend from Kent NOEL REDDING (late of Jimi Hendrix Band and Fat Mattress) and they formed the shortlived BRAIN POLICE, which became (without Chris) ROAD and finally The NOEL REDDING BAND. This CD contains all the best Mayfield's Mule recordings, drawing from both the singles and the album. MILLENIUM - Pieces- Essential listening for sunshine pop and psych-pop fans!- Label:VOICEPRINT (England) By 1969, the Millennium, Curt Boettcher (who was also an independently contracted producer for Columbia Records), executive producer Gary Usher of the band’s “Begin” album, and a slew of Usher-produced acts like Gene Clark, the Peanut Butter Conspiracy and Chad & Jeremy, were all let go by the label. Combined with the internal conflicts the Millennium were experiencing, and multiplied by the inherent pressures of their rock-n-roll lifestyles, the loss of their recording contract was a fatal blow for the group. The Millennium disbanded in 1969, leaving behind a classic one-shot "desert island" LP. Yet the Millennium's breakup did not eliminate all interest in the group. Somewhere along the line, enough "people in the know" purchased or were handed copies of their album, and soon a small but devoted cult began to form around the record. For whatever reason, a good amount of unrealized Millennium material languished in the vaults. It is an incredible revelation to finally hear these missing puzzle pieces which reveal a band of enormous depth and songwriting talent. After listening to these unreleased demos, the divine results of the cosmically profound collaborative effort known as the Millennium become even more apparent. Unlike most of the concurrent L.A. super-groups (e.g. Rhinoceros), the members of the Millennium actually gelled musically. FLIES -Complete Collection 1965-68 (UK Fuzz psych legends )-Label:ACME lion From the opening riff of the Flies’ hard-edged debut single for Decca, ‘(I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone,’ you might think that here was a band who were destined for glory—possibly even fame and fortune. But their story, like that of many awe-inspiring UK underground bands from the 1960s, was not a success story. Yes, the Flies had a few other releases on Decca and RCA, none of which attained any chart success. If not for the inclusion of this one slab of fuzz psychedelia on the legendary compilation "Chocolate Soup for Diabetics", the Flies would perhaps have remained unknown to devotees of the 1960s psychedelic scene. Still, this was a band that played major gigs with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues, and Traffic, and were a big part of the mayhem at the legendary 14-hour Technicolour Dream event in London in 1967; this is a band whose key members founded bands like Please, T2, Bulldog Breed, Gun, and Infinity, and whose producer was Ivor Raymonde, who co-authored and arranged Dusty Springfield’s big hits for Philips (and also sired Cocteau Twins’ bassist Simon Raymonde). Although commercial success eluded them, it is fitting that the Flies have now achieved cult fame—their singles, which range from freakbeat to Mark Wirtz-esque pop/psych, merit the acclaim, and their introspective demos are perhaps even better.
