MONTESANO -El Pasillo (1982 Argentine prog) -Label:RECORD RUNNER It was in the early eighties, when ex-Crucis keyboardist Gustavo Montesano ended his participation in "Merlin" (a band founded with Alejandro De Michele, and with whom he recorded a disc), and decided to create a new project, which was to combine traditional music and a taste for symphonic progressive rock. The result was the band Montesano, with his brother Marcelo on keyboards, Fernando Ortega of Marbella on bass, Marina Olmi on vocals, and Richard Giles on drums. Their sole album, “El Pasillo,” was released early in 1982. A refined progressive rock, full of nuances, with the music based upon carefully developed, delicate melodies. This mixing of Latin sophistication and elegance evokes Italians groups such as Premiata Forneria Marconi, Celeste, Quella Vecchia Loccanda with superb aerial guitar parts ala Santana and delicate keyboards lines. The CD includes two unreleased tracks from Crucis. An album that deserves to be rediscovered and appreciated to understand a little more of one of the great artists of progressive rock from Argentina. CD $16 SKU:20341

MONTESANO, GUSTAVO -Homenaje (1977 ARGENTINE RARITY) -Label:RECORD RUNNER Going for big bucks elsewhere! Montesano was the bassist and primary composer of Crucis, and his debut solo album "Homenaje" (1977) was made in the slipstream of Crucis' second album "Los Delirios del Mariscal." The rest of Crucis contribute, as do many other notable Argentinean rock musicians of the time. The opening instrumental 'Sinfonia Lunatica' and the subsequent vocal number 'Cuando la duda se hace grande alrededor' are the album's highlights, full of lively melodies, sunny Mellotron and synthesizer layers and excellent guitar work from Pino Marrone which highlights the melodic side of his playing. The vocal parts on the poppy 'La última barrera' and the piano ballad 'Desde que te pude ver' are a bit marshmallowy, even if the instrumental parts on the latter (including a real string section) are inspired. The rest of the album divides itself between two majestically droning instrumentals and the up-tempo rocker 'Primer triunfo,', which has Genesis-like penchant for driving yet choppy rhythms, leaping synthesizers and solid chords. The end result is a very accessible and immediate symphonic album, not very complex in structures yet rich in arrangements and melodies. Argentina has produced stronger progressive rock (e.g. Bubu's "Anabelas", Pablo el Enterrador's first album), but unless complexity and intensity are what you are primarily looking for, you shouldn't ignore this satisfying little album. Two short, previously unreleased Crucis tracks have been added as a bonus on the CD version. These are close to the second album in sound, but lighter and simpler in style. Nice and jazzy and they push the CD past the 40-minute mark, so no complaints there. CD $15 SKU:20273

MOPS--Psychedelic Sounds in Japan (60s Japanese rock) -Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) The Mops are the undisputed kings of the late sixties/early seventies Japanese rock scene; all of their discs are marked by spectacular singing, playing, arranging, and songwriting. Yet it is their first album, "Psychedelic Sounds in Japan," that gets the most praise—rightly so, as it's a marked deviation from most of the other music making going on at the time in Japan, with its sharply stripped-down sound and emphasis on musicianship, songwriting, and atmosphere over production values. As such, it's one of the few Japanese rock albums that has an outside-of-Japan following, and it's frequently name-checked on lists of classic obscure albums. But of course, this means that original LP copies of the album trade for hilarious amounts! This reissue restores the track "Blind Bird," (missing from other reissues of this album, apparently due to its "offensive" lyrics), and adds seven bonus tracks. If you've never heard this album, and you're a fan of tightly written songs, great playing, totally incomprehensible lyrics and a smattering of surprising covers (‘The Letter,’ ‘Light My Fire,’ ‘Somebody to Love’), this one’s for you. And how can anyone live without the classic ‘I Am Just a Mops’—I mean, aren’t we all? CD $10 SKU:18954

NATIONAL WAKE- ST (80s South African rock)Label:FRESH National Wake, the band Ian Kadey led in the late 70s and early 80s, were South Africa's first, and indeed only, multiracial punk band. CD $14 SKU:20406

NOSFERATU -ST (early psych Krautrock 1970)-Label:OHRWASCHL Early Krautrock album (1970) with a heavy and raw sound alleviated by well-chosen psychedelic elements, with the benefit of being engineered by the legendary Konrad Plank; a few tracks offer up some trippy grooves, but the group tends to lean towards an Anglo-American approach, with prominent flute and sax, and English vocals; in spite of this obvious Anglo influence, the group manages to create a unique sound. This can be attributed to the creation of unusual riffs and rhythms, as well as the sax and flute versus organ ratio; an impossibly rare album first released on the Vogue label, and now one of the most sought after Krautrock records; the famously sinister cover captures the darkness of the music. NOSTRADAMOS-ST (1972 Greek folk/rock band) Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA Only record from short-lived Greek folk/rock band Nostradamos, originally released on Zodiac in 1972. As the booklet text says, “they made one record, being a quiet record, where the beautiful woman’s voice of Despina Glezou makes a transparent impression, in songs which integrate Greek song styles into the elements of American rock and pop music. There are delicate parts, there are groovy parts—but throughout the album there is a wonderful and a standardized impression. The melodies overflow. The wind that blows is an agreeable one. Other than guitar, bass and drums, there is violin and Hammond, the flute and something that sounds like French horn. It seems like pathos, it seems like folk rock, it seems that what we can all like is in all the band’s pop songs. Whatever you like, maybe you don’t stop wanting to hear this strange record. You can hear it now with sufficiently good sound, with the delicate nuance in evidence. It is transmitted.” All perfectly true! Despina Glezou was a former member of the band Poll who had also worked with George Romanos, Socrates (on the rare "Live At Kyttaro" LP), Dionysis Savvopoulos, and Bourboulia; she makes her claim as most important woman in Greek rock history with her work on this record. PAJARO-Pajarito Zaguri y La Murga del Rock & Roll (Founder of Argentine rock, hard hitting acid blues) 2 ONLY -Label:FONOCAL Considered one of the founders of the Argentine rock. He joined several pioneering bands of the genre, including The Los Beatniks, Los Náufragos y La Barra de Chocolate. In 1976, Pajarito pulled together a band of hard rockers to make this album, hard-hitting acid blues rock in a Pappo's Blues vein. ALEXANDER, WILLIE - Solo Loco (Test Pressing) WAREHOUSE FIND -Label:Bomp Records 1981. Willie "Loco" Alexander (born 13 January 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American singer and keyboard player based in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He played with The Lost, The Bagatelle and The Grass Menagerie before becoming a member of The Velvet Underground in late 1971, joining fellow Grass Menagerie alumni Doug Yule and Walter Powers and replacing Sterling Morrison, who had gone off to pursue an academic career. With the Velvet Underground, Alexander toured England, Scotland and The Netherlands in support of then-current album Loaded. After completing the tour on November 21, 1971 in Groningen, the band planned to start recording a new album, but band manager Steve Sesnick sent all of the band but Yule home, presumably to retain maximum control of the product (the resulting album was Squeeze, released in 1973) and effectively ending Alexander's time with the band. After leaving The Velvet Underground, he enjoyed a chequered career, both solo and with his Boom Boom Band, that lasts to this day. In-between, Alexander teamed up with Powers to tour France in 1982 for French punk record label New Rose Records, in 1987 opening for Dramarama and in 2006 for a tour with the legendary Boom Boom band. In addition to his storied music career, in 1994, Willie narrated a local film entitled Middle Street made by fellow Gloucester native, independent filmmaker, Henry Ferrini. Willie has also contributed many songs to the soundtracks for Henry's other films. LP $15 SKU:10176

Originally issued on Poppy Records, home of psych heads The Mandrake Memorial among others, Lightman's deserves to be discovered by all the fans of the soft rock, orchestra arranged sounds. Think of an american reply to the early works of Duncan Browne, Bill Fay, Nick Garrie or even Donovan at his most popsike sounding recordings. Fans of the early Bee Gees will also enjoy this LP! RATIONALS--10” Temptation Bout to get Me (60s Detroit ) SAALE -Label:TOTAL ENERGY LAST COPIES When serious collectors compose lists of the top shoulda-been-bigger bands of the '60s, the Rationals are often among them. Coming out of the same Ann Arbor, MI scene that gave birth to the MC5 and the Stooges, the group's forte was a sort of garageish take on blue-eyed soul, built around the fine RB-hued vocals of frontman Scott Morgan. Their mid-'60s singles, however, didn't break in many areas outside of Michigan (where they had some big local hits), and by the time they got to record an album, they had long passed their peak.the Rationals actually predated the MC5/Stooges by quite some time, both chronologically and stylistically. When they began recording for the local A2 label in 1965, they were, like many garage bands, heavily influenced by the British Invasion, although they gave their material a more soulful flavor than most similar units. "Gave My Love" was a chart-topper in Ann Arbor (and a hit in Detroit), as was a follow-up single of "Respect" (which predated Aretha Franklin's version). Picked up for national distribution by Cameo/Parkway, it nudged into the lowest regions of the national charts as well.” LP $10 SKU: 22014
