NEW ARRIVALS

AVE ROCK - ESPACIOS (70s space psych)Label:FONOCOL Ave Rock was a pioneer of symphonic prog in Argentina, their second album "Espacios" being their most accomplished effort. The band's ambitions are evidently high, as it can be inferred from the expansive nature of 'Pausa en Espacios' (21 minutes) and 'Surcos en el Aire' (15 minutes). The band has a lot of strong points: an ability to organize diverse musical motifs with cohesion, a clever management of textures and tempo shifts, robust skills, and solid interplay. While references to Yes are evident in Ave Rock's global sound, Ave Rock's music tends to be more reflective, so their major foreign influences stem from the eerie melancholy of 1973-75 Pink Floyd, Genesis' dramatic sensibility, and some of the special ethereal magic usually associated to Invisible, another compatriot band that was influential in the local rock scene during the early 70s. Keyboardist Alfredo Salomone adds a touch of distinction with his hord progressions, and layers on organ and synthesizer. CD $15 SKU:20330

BARIS MANÇO -Yeni Bir Gün (Turkish psych masters) TWO ONLY -Label:GUERSSEN The late 70s found Turkey in an economic slump, and there was a huge rise in political violence. Bari , who so often put out collections of singles, rose to the occasion by spending 6 months holed up with his longtime backing band the Kurtalan Ekspres. The result was this studio album of Anatolian bummer psychedelia, often unfairly overlooked because it came out in the rather un-cosmic year of 1979, but also considered his best work by many.Yep, there are still electrified versions of Turkish folk songs, and the spaceshot ARPs & Korgs of “2023” are here too, but don’t expect a happy swing around the ceiling of a planetarium. The real star of the album is the keyboard player, whose name translates to ‘Sword Agent’. “Yeni Bir Gun” is viciously funky & brilliantly arranged, with tidbits stolen out of the latest disco hits, & lean, mean synthesizers that emerge from the beats like carbonated bubbles. Melancholy maqams & catastrophic Korgs collide when the Turkish psych master glides unflinchingly into the grim late 70s!! First time ever reissue, this release comes in gorgeous gatefold cover as the original, has a repro of the original poster as well, and brings an extra insert with extensive linernotes. CD $15 SKU:20541

CEM KARACA-Nem Kaldi (TURKISH ROCK PIONEER 1960s and 70s) TWO ONLY Label:PHARAWAY Cem Karaca announces his intent to slay all enemies of Istanbul’s leftist counterculture with stompin’ prog keyboards. Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca led Istanbul’s music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet’s broiling righteousness and also his listeners’ common ground with their elders in Turkey’s history. 1975’s ‘Nem Kaldi’ gathers more 60s-70s singles that lead the listener through Karaca’s own musical history, skipping across various collaborations. Sink deeper into the intrigue both musical & otherwise as fractious personnel changes & real-life assassins multiply, yet the double-time drums & badass synthesizer schwings pound o CD $15 SKU:20540

CEM KARACA -Apa lar, Karda lar, Mo ollar, Ferdy Klein Orkestrası 1974 - (TURKISH ROCK PIONEER 1960s and 70s) TWO ONLY Label:PHARAWAY Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbul’s music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet’s broiling righteousness and also his listeners’ common ground with their elders in Turkey’s history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karaca’s own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then-current project Dervi an. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kelly’s flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric ba lama, and you’re ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem. Remastered sound (sounding much better than the original pressing), insert with detailed liner not CD $15 SKU:20539

GREEN - Eau de Vie-(Power pop 2001) Label:GANG GREEN RECORDS Album number six by Green (from 2001), this collection of songs was recorded in France with Iain Burgess (of Big Black, Naked Raygun, Mega City Four fame) at his Black Box studio. It continues the layered tradition of earlier releases and builds on the Green legacy of intelligent songwriting and pathetic promotion. "Like Big Star's Alex Chilton, singer-guitarist Jeff Lescher makes sophisticated power-pop with more than a dollop of blue-eyed soul. Green's latest album in a criminally underappreciated 15-year career conjures the plaintiveness of "Village Green Preservation Society." —Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune CD $12 SKU:20528

GRUPA AMIGOS - Paloma mensajera (Rare 1972 S American psych) ONE ONLY Label:GUERSSEN r. Originally released as a demo pressing in 1973, this album by Peruvian band Grupo Amigos is without doubt one of the rarest albums from the South American psych scene. Only a handful of copies were pressed for the band members and needless to say, an original copy is impossible to find. Influenced by groups like the Beatles, Byrds, Stones, Badfinger, Shakers and of course Laghonia and We All Together, the music ranges from terrific guitar psych-rock like 'Dirty Girl' (which sounds like an outtake from Laghonia's first album) to British sounding pop-psych ('Mr. Taylor's Train,' ‘Psychiatrist’), harmony pop á la Byrds on 'Looking for home,’ a few rocking tunes and some beautiful mid-tempo numbers which show their We All Together influence. On this Guerssen reissue, you'll find the complete recordings of Grupo Amigos, including their only album and a killer non-LP 45 recorded the same year. The band was formed by some long-time friends of Saúl and Manuel Cornejo, key members of legendary Peruvian bands Laghonia and We All Together. Manuel Cornejo played drums on the album recordings and Saúl was the session enginee

KORAY, ERKIN -Arap saçi- DBL 2DBl (ACID PSYCH)-Label:PHARAWAY Master of the fuzz saz, Turkey’s answer to Eric Clapton brings burly axe attacks to the snakey folk melodies of Anatolia. Long proven to cause just the brain-rot you’re looking for, here’s a Koray collection of tracks taken from singles and LPs for your acid-drenched pleasure. The guitar slinger who was once stabbed for wearing his hair too long around the streets of Istanbul interweaves melodies as old as the ruins of Ephesus with the riffs of Black Sabbath & his own souped-up ba lama. Find out why they call him Erkin Baba. Double LP and double CD sets, with insert / booklet including extensive liner notes CD $20 SKU:20538

KOUSOKUYA / Masayoshi Urabe- The Dark Spot ( Underground Japanese rare psych) 3 ONLY Label:PSF RECORDS Kosokuya the legendary psychedelic noise rock trio fromJapan, active as early as the late '70s collaborate with saxophonist extraordinaire Masayoshi Urabe. Forget everything you might have experience in the genre...The Dark Spot is something unique. Rocking as hard as the High Rise (in slower sludge tempos) and weirdly hallucinative as Fushitsusha the atmosphere it creates is one of extreme and addictive dirge that messes with your brain as if you' re lost somewhere between Mars and Venus. CD $30 SKU:20530

LOGOS -Firesides and Guitars (Acid ARchives fave 70s private issue -Label:OUT SIDER Logos 'Firesides and Guitars' was one of the most enigmatic private albums from the US. Housed in a sparse cover with little info, it was released in tiny quantities on the collectable Audio House label (home also of Smack). Nothing was known about the band until now: they were an obscure folk-rock trio from Kansas, comprised of 16-year-old Steve Epley plus brothers Chris and Cindy Williams. Their sound was charming, home-made folk-rock full of youthful innocence with layers of dual acoustic guitars and refreshing male-female vocals, featuring an impressive set of self-penned songs. Comparisons bring to mind Crosby Still & Nash or Shadrack Chameleon… Highly recommended to any folk-rock / SSW sounds collector. First time ever reissue. Full colour insert with rare photo and liner notes by band member Steve Epley. “…The combination of guitar tapestries and strong, almost Beatles-like melodies, creates an appealing experience that stands up well for repeat plays…" “…It’s refreshing to find this gem among all the mediocre 1970s hippie-folkers being touted…” “The one track with female lead vocals borders on femme soft psych, and none the worse for that. This is not a wimpy LP, but a rare case of a local band finding a melodic hippie frame that fits them perfect” – Patrick Lundborg (Acid Archives) CD $15 SKU:20543

MUNSON ,ALAN -First light (70s laid back) ONE ONLY Label:GUERSSEN And here’s the last of the 70’s works by our friend Munson! This one got released in 1979, again in small quantities, on the Parallax label in California. The “First light” album doesn’t easily fit into a music category box. The songs range from psych rock, to some fairly laid back folk-rock, and even a song with a country rock feel. Instruments played on the record include electric and acoustic guitars, electric bass and drums. Lead solos are all played on electric guitar; a clean sound on the acoustic based songs and guitar effects were used on the psych rock songs. Strong lead vocals and background harmony vocals, making this another excellent album as a result. Also one unreleased bonus track is added, all remastered from the original tapes. First time ever reissue as well; comes with a booklet, and outer carton slimcase CD $15 SKU:20531

RADIOMÖBEL-Gudang Garam (1978 SWEDISH PROG) 3 ONLY! Label:TRANSUBSTANS First released as a private press in 1978, this is a classic slice of Swedish, keyboard driven prog with a very DIY production. Almost symphonic in its execution and performance, and with great swathes of classic synth and guitar work, the overall sound is reminiscent of bands like Camel, or Van Der Graaf Generator in their more contemplative moments. An excellent hidden slice of undiscovered prog taking the musical journey to it’s highlight in the 15 minute "Flugornas morgon”. This is their 2nd LP CD $15 SKU:20527

SELDA -Vurulduk Ey Halkım Unutma 4 ONLY (1977 Turkish folk pop) Label:PHARAWAY There were female Turkish folk singers before Selda Ba can, but none whose hot-blooded voice carried such righteously angry words & none who also accompanied themselves on guitar. She began her career singing at her brothers' Beethoven nightclub in Ankara while she went to school for physics during the day. Her 1st album had help from the cream of the crazy Istanbul pop scene, and cuts from the same sessions were also released on this 2nd one. While the direction is folky overall, there's fuzz, zooming synthesizers, and heavy flute to be found. When Selda performed the title track in 1977 in a coastal town not far from Istanbul, her protest lyrics, though taken from an old poem, got her heckled by audience members who screamed that she should go back to Moscow! Find out why this brawny mama couldn't be stopped by a military government that put her on trial 9 times, and could call herself the bitter voice of the Turkish people. Remastered sound, insert / booklet with liner notes. CD $20 SKU:20525

MODERN ACOUSTIC - VA (Indie pop 70s and 80s) Label:CHERRY RED A timeless album that combines an air of sunshine and optimism with songwriting of the highest class! "This El Records/Cherry Red mix encapsulates the very essence of the sound that put both labels at the forefront of independent pop in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. The light and melodic mood displayed here distinguished Cherry Red from all others in the post-punk period, and would later be a central theme running through Mike Always’ widely respected El Records. TThe mood is exemplified by the contributions of Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn, Marine Girls, Momus, Jessica Griffin of the Would Be Goods, Louis Philippe, and Simon Turner in his guise as the King Of Luxembourg and in his composition of the soundtrack for the Derek Jarman film "Caravaggio". The finishing ingredient to "Modern Acoustic" is provided by the Harmony Grass and Tony Rivers And The Castaways selections from the RPM catal COMP CD $8 SKU:20526

SEDAYEH DEL - Funk, Psychedelia And Pop From The Iranian Pre-Revolution Generation- 4 ONLY Label:PHARAWAY Pharaway Sounds presents the fourth volume in a series of compilations highlighting fiercely rare 45s from Tehran's pre-revolutionary golden age. Vivacious ladies with sassyDorothy Hamill haircuts and skin-bearing pantsuits were once plastered across Tehran's newsstands. Those gorgeous sirens and their hunky male counterparts made all the teens sway to hand drums that boinked in 6/8 time. Plush brass and string arrangements took their cues from Latin grooves, psychedelic guitars, ritzy soundtracks, and sugary pop from the West. Within months of the 1979 Islamic revolution, pop music was labeled a symbol of the previous regime and became illegal overnight. In those same months, it also became illegal for women to be in public without conforming to the hijab dress code. By hook and crook, these little round records survived, and they attest to a time when Tehran's homegrown and exiled populations would have been united in an easygoing love for funk bass and buzzing synthesizers. Hear the tunes that rivaled the hits of Googoosh andKourosh by singers who only recorded a few precious singles, but don't think for a minute that Tehran's nightingales have run out of surprises for your ears. The discoveries are just beginning. COMP CD $18 SKU:20532

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE- The Very Best of El Records 1985-1988Label:CHERRY RED El Records is considered in some circles to be one of the most intriguing and collectable record labels there has ever been. Started by Mike Alway in 1985 it is now more than 25 years since El was launched, and this release was created to celebrate that anniversary. The gorgeous booklet contains extensive historical notes and many original images. Quotes about El Records: 'Ten years too early' Alan McGee; 'El is a pint of blue milk' Tim Gane of Stereolab 'I have been influenced deeply by Mike Alway's fantastic ideals towards pop music' Cornelius. RESTOCKS

PETER COOK + DUDLEY MOORE -Bedazzled Soundtrack 1967-Label:ACME Dudley Moore's score to the 1968 cult classic Bedazzled is a delightful jazz romp. Moore composed, arranged, and produced the music for his trio: Moore on piano, Pete McGurk on bass, and Chris Karan on drums. Moore keeps things light and airy, and also consistently cool, as he and his jazz cronies jam with precision. His fingers twinkle across the piano, portraying the comedy, tension, and emotion of the onscreen action to a tee. Saxophones, flutes, violins, and assorted horns chime in to express sadness or to take the music down truly whimsical side avenues. The three vocal songs are glorious, and it helps that they underscore the film's highlights. The pleasant choir musings of "The Leaping Nuns' Chorus" immediately brings to mind those religious figures on trampolines. Moore's pitch-perfect vocals on "Love Me" add a witty sneer to the song's bombastic undercurrent. It's impossible not to smile when he sings, "I'm on my knees/Won't you please come and love me." Peter Cook's droll, stoic voice on "Bedazzled" would be the score's standout feature if his longtime partner, Moore, wasn't such an accomplished pianist and such an intelligent jazz arranger. Who can resist Cook's dismissals of, "I don't love you, leave me alone/I'm self-contained/You fill me with inertia," as Moore implores backing vocalists to drown him in adoration? The "Main Title"'s melody makes appearances throughout the soundtrack, and Moore repeatedly twists and turns it into something new and fascinating. Filled with energy, sparklingly beautiful jazz passages, and an expert balance of classical motifs and hilarious vocals, Bedazzled is a timeless reminder of Dudley Moore's genius. CD $15 SKU:20452

SEOMPI-GUNS IN THE SKIES -(the Black Sabbath of Texas, psych rock) Label:CICADELIC RECORDS (USA) “While releasing only three singles in the early 1970's, Seompi's mystique has continued to grow through the ensuing decades. Three posthumous releases issued in the late 1990's only added to Seompi's aura—even though two were off speed and the third has been long out of print. This was the status quo for the past couple of decades until now with the release of "Guns In The Skies". Starting off with the hard rocker "AWOL" and then spacing out with the fourteen minute unreleased opus titled "Synergy Squares", Seompi takes you on a trip back to 1971 when Austin, Texas was the stomping ground for their brand of Psychedelic Space Rock. SUN DIAL-Acid Yantra (psych)Label:ACME Reissue of the bands' most successful and critically acclaimed album, from 1995 (originally on Beggars Banquet); a blast from start to finish, as Ramon's guitar playing recalls Dave Gilmour, Eddie Hazell, Ron Asheton, James Williamson among others. THRAKA - CDR (Cambodian Rocks artists sixteen tracks, blistering lead guitar) LAST COPIESLabel:KHMER ROCKS Several volumes—all CDR’s, as that is the way most music is sold amongst the Cambodian communities worldwide. These discs contain music from artists featured on the “Cambodian Rocks” series of compilations... although in this case, all the text is in Khmer, so good luck finding out what the tracks are called, or who is singing them. The music on these CDR’s demonstrates a much wider variety of styles than you hear on the “Cambodian Rocks” volumes, ranging far beyond the rock idiom into the land of what one might call an Ethiopiques sound, with Latin music, orchestra, and rough folkloric recordings all on display. A treat for the true cultural crate digger... you can’t get more down and dirty—or cheaper—than this. Very limited quantities. CD $15 SKU:20505

WILLIAM PENN AND HIS PALS -ST(1966 garage) LAST COPIES Label:BEATRECORDS (USA) The ultimate garage rock album, recorded in 1966 by one of the ultimate garage rock groups. William Penn V (and/or William Penn and His Pals) are famous for the single ‘Swami.’ Here are all the songs ever recorded by this group. “Acid-punk outfit William Penn and His Pals formed at the College of San Mateo in late 1964; originally dubbed the DiscCounts, the founding lineup comprised singer Neil Holtmann, guitarist Mike Dunn, bassist Steve Sweet and drummer Ron Cox. Keyboardist Dave Lovell signed on in early 1965, and a few months later the group significantly overhauled its lineup and look--adopting the moniker William Penn and His Pals, the band (now Holtmann, Cox, Lovell, guitarist Mike Shapiro and bassist Steve Leidenthal) adopted Revolutionary War-era stage garb that included ruffled shirts and tri-cornered hats. The addition of former Nomads guitarist Jack Shelton swelled the roster to a six-piece, and for a short time, the lineup also included a second drummer, Mickey Hart, who would later sign on with the Grateful Dead. In early 1966 keyboardist Gregg Rolie replaced Lovell—in time he assumed the lion's share of vocal duties as well, resulting in Holtmann's dismissal from the group. William Penn and His Pals were a regular presence on the Bay Area live scene, opening for the Jefferson Airplane, Paul Revere and the Raiders and Them; in 1966, they cut their lone single ‘Swami’ (credited to the William Penn Fyve), later anointed an underground classic thanks to its inclusion on the third Pebbles collection. A deal with the Fantasy label was pending, but in 1967 the group dissolved, with Rolie subsequently joining Santana.” ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide CD $12 SKU:20451
