MAGIC SAM - Out Of Bad Luck: The Cobra, Chief & Crash Sessions, 1957-1966- JAPANESE WITH OBI STRIP Label:P VINE SEALED A striking tremolo-driven guitarist with a more than competent vocal presence, Mississippi-born Magic Sam hit Chicago in 1950, but instead of falling in with the predominate Chicago blues style of the era, he veered more to the R&B side of things and became a major player in Chicago's so-called West Side Sound. His debut release for Cobra Records, 1957's "All Your Love," was a template Sam would return to again and again throughout his all too brief career. Built on stinging, echoing guitar lines and featuring a vocal style that took as much from Sam Cooke as it did from the Delta, "All Your Love" was an immediate local hit. Another distinctive track from Sam's stay with Cobra is the kinetic and bustling rockabilly blues gem called "21 Days in Jail." After a sojourn at Chess Records, Sam signed with Chief Records in 1960, waxing, among other sides, a marvelous cover of Fats Domino's "Every Night About This Time." He cut a couple of singles with Crash Records in 1966 before signing with Delmark Records, which released Sam's brilliant West Side Soul LP in 1967, followed by the almost as remarkable Black Magic in 1968. Superstardom seemed inevitable for the soulful guitarist and singer, but a heart attack in 1969 took his life. Magic Sam was only 32 when he died. His Delmark material should be the first stop for anyone looking to explore Sam's musical legacy, but his earlier work for the Cobra, Chief and Crash imprints is exciting in its own right. Black Diamond Heavies is a self-described punk-ass blues duo from the South consisting of John Wesley Myers on bass keys, fender Rhodes, organ, and lead vocals and Van Campbell on drums, percussion and vocals. "A Touch Of Someone Else's Class" is the follow up to their acclaimed 2007's debut "Every Damn Time" (Alive), and it's a another slab of grungy, dirty, blues punk rock'n'roll with a heavy, greasy, touch of soul. This time the two-piece traveled to Akron, Ohio, to team up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and record in his newly built studio, equipped with vintage gear. The result is everything one would expect, and more. The "blues groove monsters" deliver another blues/soul/rock masterpiece of gothic proportions. Worth mentioning is a guest appearance by Ralph Carney on horns, best known for his long-time association with Tom Waits. AGAPE -The Problem Is Sin: Live And Unreleased (1973 blazing acid jam but with Jesus!)-Label:HIDDEN VISION Collection of rare material, much of it only previously available on an extremely rare promo-only 8-track tape (!) from one of the first hard rock Jesus music bands, formed around the talent of Fred Caban during the early stages of what became known as the Jesus People movement. Most of it is live from 1973, the stand-outs being a blazing acid jam versions of ‘Wouldn’t it Be a Drag’ and ‘Change of Heart’, live at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. Upon graduating from high school in the spring of 1968, Hendrix-influenced guitarist Fred Caban and his bandmates squeezed into a small Volkswagen van in search of venues to perform. One night, at Huntington Beach's Lightclub, they met a group of enthusiastic teenagers whom Caban described as being "totally immersed with the message of Christ." Though not totally understanding the "Lightclubber's” message, Caban began praying for an introduction to "whomever was out there." When he returned to the van he shared his experience and found that fellow bandmate Jeff Newman had also undergone a spiritual conversion. Caban formed another band naming it Agape, the Greek word for God's love. Having established himself as a guitarist of some merit, the band capitalized on his name to gather crowds. Agape's vision became evangelistic–desiring to share their experience with their peers. "We'd play one or two songs, we'd jam, we'd blow them away and then boom, we'd start preaching..... and people would actually stick around and listen." Within six months a group of fifty young converts had joined the trio as a loose amalgamation of spiritually searching teenagers who gathered together for Bible studies and strategy sessions to promote the band's concerts. COOPER,JOHN & PHILIPPA,-The Cooperville Times (1969 like early Jefferson Airplane)-Label:FRESH Spooky psychedelic folk rock (1969) featuring the unmistakable guitar sounds of Julian Laxton (Freedom’s Children). Unquestionably one of the rarest South African albums ever: folk tinged psychedelia, featuring the whimsical vocals of John & Philipa Cooper with guitar by Julian Laxton, which has been hailed by collectors worldwide as comparable to the legendary Mellow Candle or early Jefferson Airplane. Brother/sister John & Philipa Cooper went to Britain shortly after the album was made, and there the story ends. Even so, this amazing album is considered in the same class as those by Billy Nichols, Duncan Browne and Blossom Toes. Well composed underground songs, folk rock, effects—an album full of ideas and masterfully played... it just has the right feel, with the combination of great songs and a '60s art-vibe. FRIENDS- Fragile ( 60s soft Psych/Folk ) - Label:LION The rarest, and I would dare to say best, folk/psych album from Peter Howell and John Ferdinando, musical brainchildren behind Ithaca, Agincourt, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and Tomorrow Come Someday. This fifth Howell/Ferdinando album had just been completed in or around 1974 when the partnership came to an end. Howell had been working at the BBC as a studio manager since 1970 (he'd provided a stiff upper lip voiceover for John Peels Top Gear shows), but he was now offered a position with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, which he accepted, and still holds. An album so incredibly rare (only a single acetate exists), that many have doubted the album’s existence… until now! “Friends” still has the recognizable Ithaca and/or Agincourt sound, with lead vocals mainly by Peter Howell mostly, but with all the same elements and participants, and four tracks featuring the lovely vocals of Ruth Cubbin. A pastoral psychedelic folk stroll in the sunshine, with a few tracks reminiscent of 60's soft psych. Very good!!” CD $10 SKU:21914

Carefully remastered for pristine sound that lays waste to all the bootlegs that have come before. 12-page booklet with liner notes, clippings and photographs. Icecross possess a unique dark sound which reveals influences ranging from Sabbath to Crimson to Blue Oyster Cult and beyond all melded together in such a way to form their distinct Icecross style. Considered proto-metal by many, though they don’t achieve this with a typical smash your face approach. Instead, Icecross unleash some killer inventive guitar sounds by way of Leslie speakers combined with ominous effected bass lines and splendid use of bow to create a perfect dark heavy guitar album. MANSET, GERARD -La Mort D’Orion (1970 French rebel)Label:WORLD It was the release of “La Mort D'orion” (1970), his third album, that made self proclaimed ‘lifelong rebel and eternal failure’ Gerard Manset famous in his native France. This ambitious concept album opens with dissonant strings in a classical mode that could easily be part of a Bartok quartet; the music then evolves (after a sitar interlude) into a multi-part, nearly 25-minute long song with an epic sweep that seems to encompass and distill all the finest that French modernism has to offer, channeling the spirit of its literary innovators (from Nerval, Rimbaud, Apollonaire, and Cendras to the likes of Camus, Sartre, and Robbe-Grillet), while also benefiting from the advancements in studio sound pioneered by the likes of Pierre Henry at Pierre Schaffer’s studio at RTF. As our friends at Other Music have said, “moments of seemingly normal French chanson give way to subtle and psychologically disorienting manipulations of orchestral trappings—the results are very dark, very beautiful, and quite unlike anything you'd expect from French popular music.” Creepy in some parts, at others "serious" psychedelic/avant garde progressive psychedelia, with abundant dark orchestrated atmospheres; for those who don’t object to this approach it is an album that can only be described as a masterpiece. In the end, "La Mort d’Orion" proved to be both a critical and commercial triumph; indeed, it went on to sell more than 20,000 copies—a remarkable feat for such a strange and innovative album—and French critics showered it with rave reviews. MERRELL FANKHAUSER and the HAIKU BAND -Visitor From 2000 AD (west coast surf-psych legend)-Label: From the ashes of the mythical Argentine duo Sandhy & Mandhy—who recorded in 1969 the intensely rare and beloved album “Para Castukis” (reissued by Lion Productions on vinyl and CD), a record suffused with beat and psychedelic influences—comes this resurrection by Mandhy of his "Celestial Stories." Alberto Vanasco Jr. (Mandhy) resumes his musical tale with twelve tracks written between 1968 and 1978. Recorded with the analogue essence and sound of the 70s, using vintage instruments like Farfisa and Hammond organ, and fuzz guitar. Features Argentine rock legends Nexus as the backing band. MORAZ, PATRICK- Out in the Sun(MOODY BLUES)Label:ESOTERIC Swiss born Patrick Moraz is probably best known in rock music circles for his membership of two of the world’s biggest rock bands, Yes and the Moody Blues. He was also been a member of the progressive rock band Mainhorse, forming the band with bassist Jean Ristori in 1969 and releasing one self titled album in 1970. By the time of the release of Moraz’s debut solo album in early 1976, he was firmly installed as the keyboard player in Yes. Following the release of Relayer all the members of Yes embarked on solo projects thus ensuring that his “The Story Of I” received maximum coverage in the music press. He then released his second solo album in 1977 (“Out In The Sun”) before joining the Moody Blues. As can be deduced from the title the second disc on offer here is a pairing of the first two Future Memories releases gathered together on one release. As with all the albums in the Patrick Moraz reissue campaign, this album has been re mastered for release by Moraz himself from the original master tapes. (Time Wave) CD $6 SKU:19062

NATIONAL WAKE- ST (80s South African punk)Label:FRESH The scene for developing free-thinking rock music in South Africa was a struggle against social and political barriers unlike any place else in the world at that time, except perhaps for the Eastern Block countries then under the thumb of USSR era communism. This is a story of struggle, the sum total of which reaches far beyond the music: National Wake, the band Ian Kadey led in the late 70s and early 80s, were South Africa's first, and indeed only, multiracial punk band. And yet Kadey had kept this unique story to himself, partly because he thought no one was interested (National Wake split in 1982 just after putting out their solitary release, an album of which only 500 copies were pressed), but also, Kadey says, because "it was too painful for me, so I just buried it". The band's two black members, brothers Gary and Punka Khoza had subsequently died: the former had struggled with mental illness and killed himself; the latter died from an Aids-related illness. " Kadey formed National Wake in the aftermath of the Soweto uprising of 1976 – "one of the conditions of living in a repressive state like that is that it just seems impossible to do anything about it, there's a kind of paralysis, but that was a real 'get up, stand up' moment: look at these kids, it's time to take up the fight" – their sound influenced by British and American punk and Bob Marley. If the South African authorities had somehow managed to overlook Bob Marley, they didn't miss National Wake, whose songs didn't exactly cloak their political message in layers of impenetrable metaphor. In three minutes, the band's signature tune 'International News' manages to decry state censorship, the war in Angola and what guitarist Steve Moni calls "the ostrich life of suburban South Africa, just spending your time deliberately trying not to notice things". They seem to have been viewed with a certain awe even by rival punk bands: "They had an aura, like wanted men," says Michael Flek, frontman of South Africa's first punk band Wild Youth. Doug Riley is a fantastic singer and this is indeed a very fine AOR album. I don't think you'll find better examples of pompy AOR than 'Behind Your Eyes' or 'Live Forever.’ An excellent blend of high class melodic rock with great use of backing vocals and loads of keyboard blasts coming out of everywhere! SAN UL LIM - 3 (1977 psych power pop garage) - Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) The liner notes say, “they wanted to mNake this album as Western top class Hard-Rock music. This time they didn’t use organ and used only guitars, drums and bass as a power rock trio, and also made songs in a Hard rock style (songs which were not ballad style or popular).” But, of course, the result is not a “Hard Rock” record at all. Maybe that’s what we love best about San Ul Lim: they were complete failures—they never managed to create the sound they were trying so hard to make... and this album is no exception. True, the record starts out with throat-shredding vocals and a guitar sound that is suddenly ever-present, fuzzed-out, and ominous sounding; but by track two, we already have dreamy melodies, (supported by that fuzz guitar and ending with some punk wailing); track three is pleasant and lilting—very much not Hard Rock; track four is a nine-minute slow-burn; and then you have the almost 19-minute track that was side two of the original LP—droning fuzz guitar psychedelia at it’s maniacal best for six minutes, before what sounds like a prolonged theremin solo (a keyboard?); then we’re back into a ‘White Light, White Heat’ groove, with imaginative fuzz guitar soloing to take us home. Korean rock specialists called the first three San Ul Lim albums “the demo tape triple collection”. These are regarded as the band’s best recordings “because they made most songs on these albums between 1971 and 1975 (before their debut). Therefore the songs had their early originality and creativity.” CD $10 SKU:19025

TROYES - Rainbo Chaser-Complete REcordings (67 psych)- Label:CICADELIC RECORDS The Troyes exploded onto the music scene with 'Rainbow Chaser' a regional smash hit that climbed to number 3 on the top 40 in September of 1966. Sensing a new phenomenon, famed bandleader Ray Anthony (who already had smash hits with 'Dragnet' and 'Peter Gunn') signed the group to his new rock label Space Records. His faith in the band was so big that nearly two albums worth of material were recorded at United Sound (Detroit) in 1966 and 1967. Unfortunately, only two singles were issued and the rest of the material was never released. Now for the first time ever, all twenty-four of The Troyes' recordings are compiled on one album. YOON YOUN SUN--Wing of Peace (S Korean 70s female trippy vocals) Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA in some ways, this could be the female counterpart to Lee Jang Hee’s "Meet Me In a Room": first of all, it also features "best production and trip vocal." It’s almost as if these were albums designed one to answer the other, with Yoon Youn Sun’s beautiful, brooding vocals breathing hope where before there was despair; then there are the retro-early 60’s touches that are reminiscent of French ye-ye music of the François Hardy, France Gall type, sultry, yet nurturing a languid innocence; in any case, this album by Yoon Youn Sun was not released in France in the 1960’s, it was released in Korea in 1972 (KLS-64), which makes Yoon Youn Sun a contemporary of Kim Jung Mi, all in all a good reference point; the record has several modes: there are duets with a male singer (all very tasty); the songs that groove the best (tracks five and six) occur when the cheesy farfisa organ gets involved; the second half of the record features more complex arrangements (a few strings find their way into the mix); it’s no surprise that Koreans like Greek music—some of these songs (track three for example) sound as though they could be Neo Kyma tracks from the Popi Asteriadi record previously issued by World Psychedelia, which is, of course, not a bad thing at all; then again, other tracks sound like early Selda material. AURA- Sativa (1974 SF psych funk masterpiece) - Label:LION Official replica vinyl edition of this oft-sampled slab of Bay Area history, a psych funk masterpiece that cannot be denied. Aura formed in 1974 and played extensively throughout Northern California. By 1976, the band recorded their first and only album at Pacific Recording Studio in San Mateo. The original title of the album was meant to be "Sativa", but out of fear that promoting the joys of marijuana would be too controversial, the band omitted the title and just left it as "Aura". Over the ensuing decades, the Aura album has grown in stature to become a major soul/funk collector's item. It features a number of major funk tracks plus funky ballads with female vocals. Standouts include 'Sativa' (replete with water-pipe sound effects and blistering guitar), and the manic fuzz-guitar jam 'Skyrocket.' Playing fast, ear-catching garage pop songs, sometimes wearing matching suits, the trio had more than a bit of the stripped down street energy of the Los Angeles's early punk movement. They shared the stage with the Ramones and Mink Deville during their infamous US "Magical Blistering Tour," played the Punk Palace and the legendary Masque in Hollywood, and headlined shows with the Avengers, the Zeros, The Dils, The Screamers and Shock, to name just a few. After the band's break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS, and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively.
