When we first issued this terrific album many many years ago, our booklet featured the few scraps of information on the band we could find. We challenged “anyone out there” to find some information on this elusive and intriguing band. Well, we’re pleased that someone took us up on that offer, and that the specific someone was band leader Tom Waschkowski (credited on the album as Tom Martin). He graciously offered us a band history, lyrics, and some terrific photos. This allows us to offer up as perfect a reissue of this album as humanly possible. The Folklords “Release the Sunshine” is a captivating album, a notion shared by the many collectors world-wide who fight for original copies, which are few and far between. Strange thing is, if someone were to say to us that the Folklords album was released by Creation Records in 1987, it would be difficult to argue. You may well ask, why? The result is an album to wake up the dead, and rock it back to hell! People compared them to the early Beatles or the Dave Clark Five." - Kenneth Funsten. Formed in 1975 by guitarist JACK LEE, bassist PETER CASE, and drummer PAUL COLLINS, the Nerves are one of the most influential garage/punk pop outfits to come out of the mid-70's LA scene, and certainly one of the least documented... until now. Mostly remembered for their classic "Hanging On The Telephone," a Jack Lee composition which has been covered over the years by a myriad of artists from BLONDIE to L7 to CAT POWER, the Nerves were above all a high energy rock'n'roll band with all three members composing and singing. Playing fast, ear-catching garage pop songs, sometimes wearing matching suits, the trio had more than a bit of the stripped down street energy of the Los Angeles's early punk movement. They shared the stage with the Ramones and Mink Deville during their infamous US "Magical Blistering Tour," played the Punk Palace and the legendary Masque in Hollywood, and headlined shows with the Avengers, the Zeros, The Dils, The Screamers and Shock, to name just a few. After the band's break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS, and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively. Following the success of "Hanging On the Telephone," JACK LEE has mostly focused on his songwriting career, releasing an album in 1981. Both Peter and Paul are still recording and touring. PETER CASE's latest album "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John" (Yeproc 2007) was nominated for a Grammy. This collection, authorized for the first time ever by the three band members, features their 1976 EP (now regarded as a power pop classic), as well as demos and previously unreleased live recordings, REMASTERED and complete with notes and photos. BRIDE JUST DIED- All Hallow’s Eve -Label:NDN The time has come to tell the tale - Bride Just Died's debut album is finally here - mummify your pets and daughters! Bride Just Died started in Birmingham, the UK, some 6 years ago. After many line-up changes, the band finally arrived in the shape of a three piece: Rob (guitar), Rich (drums + backing vox) and Checkley (bass + lead vox). Soon establishing themselves as a raw-as-hell punk ‘n' roll band, they entered the studio and emerged with the "We Are The Hungry" 7" EP (NDN 14). That session also produced a speeded up version of the Damned's classic "Suicide", which found its way onto the "It's A Damned Damned Damned World" compilation CD (NDN 12). Not long after all this, Rob stepped down from the guitar spot and was soon replaced by Tat. At the same time Checkley hung up his bass to focus on the vocal duties, and from then on Ivan appeared on the 4-string. Bride Just Died quickly grew into a monstrously tight live band. ASTRAL DAZE - VA VOL 1 (70 s Psychedelic South African Rock) - Label:FRESH This collection brings together rarities from artists we know (tracks from Abstract Truth, Suck, Otis Waygood, Freedom’s Children, John & Philipa Cooper, McCully Workshop, Third Eye, and Hawk), as well as others we’ve not heard before, like Omega Ltd., the Bats, the Fireflies, the Idiots, Tidal Wave, and the Invaders. Although the South African rock movement of the late sixties and early seventies was not a major commercial success, it's participants heralded an exciting new age in South African rock and started a movement aimed at changing the musical tastes of fans in a spectacular way. Stadium concerts became the vehicle for feeding the youth with heavier rock sounds, and behind studio glass were producers like Clive Calder, Billy Forrest, Graham Beggs and Selwyn Miller who acted as change agents to transform conventional pop into heavier 4 to 5 minute songs. Originally released in 1970 by Pink Elephant, the music is a wonderful mixture of druggy folk, spacy guitar and haunting melodies that some sources have considered to be vaguely reminiscent of Love's 'Forever Changes'. They were located in Amsterdam's red light district, which is why they called themselves Oldest Profession(al) Music Company, or in short O.P.M.C. OLIVER- STANDING STONE 1974 Welsh cult mind bending rarity -Label:GUERSSEN Now reissued is a Welsh cult private pressing rarity, originally from 1974. Farmer and part-time musician Oliver Chaplin recorded this mind bending album on a portable 4-track Teac reel-to-reel machine, assisted by his brother Chris, an experienced BBC engineer who was involved in sessions with a.o. Syd Barrett. Oliver sang and played acoustic and electric guitars, and plenty of effects were used to create a very unique kind of DIY mutant-psychedelic-blues (think Captain Beefheart) which sounded years ahead of its time. Though the original LP was pressed in an edition of only 250 copies, it caught the attention of a.o. Virgin Records and J.J. Cale, but Oliver decided not to get tangled up in the music industry. With friends, he formed The Outsiders. In 1976, they home-recorded 'Calling On Youth', a searching full-length that straddles nihilo-punk argot as well as smudged glam balladry. Its release in 1977, on the group's own Raw Edge label, with Borland's cityscape abstraction on the cover, marked the first independent punk full-length in the United Kingdom. 'Calling On Youth' announces Borland as more than a precious teenage bandleader.
