MANKEY, EARL- - Mau Mau /Crazy orig 1978 pressing! w pic slv.Label:BOMP/Exhibit J (Orig pressing of BOMP spinoff label, Exhibit J) rare by legendary producer “ In this one short song, there is enough pure-pop majesty to fill your week's quota of such grand music. Earle Mankey was a founding member of the odd new-wave 80's band, Sparks. Mankey has some serious production credits to his name too, including Concrete Blonde's first album. "Mau Mau" begins with a jungle drum beat and a chorus of low voiced fellows singing "Ugachukka, ugachukka" over and over again. The song makes an abrupt left turn when Mankey begins singing about an African "...who can take his love any way he can, by the point of spear, by the point of knife" in his distant pop voice over a tinkley synth sound. Mankey builds layer upon layer in the chorus, with guitars ultimately building to a "Baba O'Rielly" guitar riff. You don't find sublime pop-rock like this everyday, but when you do, it's quite a treat. -- Doug Cornell, 45 RPM $5 SKU:4824

Features The Coachwhips, Two Gallants (early recording), Boyskout, Black Cat Music, Hotwires Titans, The Flakes, Big Midnight, etc. "There's a bevy of talent boiling over, captured on this surpringly consistent compilation. The hard-rocking Joan Jett-meets-AC/DC riffage of Nagg opens things with the smug "Beauty of the Bitch." the Coachwhips and Boyskout serve up cool synth-heavy tunes. Big Midnight and Black Cat Music layer Iggy Pop-style confessional rock with ominous layers of guitars and organ. the Holy Kiss sounds desperate and desolate like the finest work of Rowland S. Howard and The Aktion deliver solid power-pop hooks. The Sound Of San Francisco is just about as splintered and random as when I'd left it, but the bands of that time seem to have grown exponentially good extremly quickly." - Skyscrapper COMP CD $3 SKU:13080

SWEET SURRENDER - EMBER POP (OBSCURE 70S) Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE Collectors will cherish the recordings of the more obscure artists. From Record Collector: “As a follow-up to Rainy Day Mind, Fantastic Voyage’s second trawl through the Ember label’s pop archives proves that bantamweights can sometimes conjure forth a more evocative picture of a given era than the big hitters. Sweet Surrender comes across like a Tony Blackburn radio show circa 1970: untainted by heaviosity, cheerfully free of social comment and aimed simply at urging the Radio 1 Roadshow faithful to shuffle gamely onto the dancefloor in their knee boots and hot pants. The Rusty Harness version of 'Take Me For A Little While' packs an ecstatic Northern soul thump and is a definite highlight, alongside girl group Mother Trucker’s chunky contributions ('Explosion In My Soul,' 'Wrap It Up'), 'Simone' by Mamas & Papas escapee Denny Doherty, Polly Niles’ sprightly take on 'For What It’s Worth' and Blue Beard’s endearingly rustic 'Country Man', on which the vocalist sounds as though he’s been smoking an exhaust pipe in the Appalachians since boyhood.” Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. THREE O CLOCK MERRIAN WEBSTER TIME - 22 Psych Sounds from Texas. 66-68Label:CICADELIC RECORDS (USA) By the time 1966 ended, many of the groups in Texas that started out playing British Invasion and folk-rock music, were now immersing themselves in the newly emerging psychedelic music. The five groups that comprise this album reflect the changes that occurred during this period and four of them even changed their names to sound more psychedelic. The Nomads became Smoke, Carrols Mood became The Sights And Sounds, The New Imperials became The Front Page News, and The Boys became The Remaining Few. Represented by twelve tracks on this album, The Nomads/Smoke, started out playing folk-rock music, but by 1967 went psychedelic-as witnessed by their “freak-out” version of “My Little Red Book” replete with backwards tapes. “Carrols Mood” went from singing ballads to surreal songs such as “Mystical Bells”. The Front Page News went from the soul of “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box” to the fuzz drenched “Thoughts and Afterthoughts”. If the 13th Floor Elevators were the epitome of what a Texas psychedelic band was, then the groups on this album were not far behind in trying to emulate that state of existence. Here then are twenty-two tracks compiling the changes that occurred from late 1966 to 1968, when the Texas bands went metaphorically speaking from “Kool-Aid” to “Electric Kool-Aid Acid” COMP CD $8 SKU:13278

TWO TIMING BABY -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 2, 1961-1962 Label:FANTASTIC EMBER In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series compiles the best of those records. “Two Timing Baby” picks up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off. Carter, Lewis & The Southerners first Ember single ‘Two Timing Baby’/’Will It Happen To Me’ features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas only single: Joe produced ‘It Matters Not’/’Upside Down’ and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks. American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including ‘The Next Time’ for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on ‘The Great Matchmaker’/’The Tears Came Rolling Down’ and the follow-up flip ‘Taming Tigers.’ Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (‘Are You Anyone s Girl’/’Teenage Bachelor’ and, again, ‘The Tears Came Rolling Down’) and Sandra Gale (‘Hello Heartache’/’If She s Right For You’) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did. Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock n roll, and she turns in fine performances on ‘Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean)’/’(He s My) Dreamboat,’ aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, ‘Road To Love’/’Secrets.’ Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz ‘Ding Dong Rag’ with groovy ‘Piano A Go Go,’ which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show. Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at £75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at £50 and Lita Roza at £30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $8 SKU:19205

VELVET REVOLUTIONS- VOL. 2:1968-1971 VA (Iron Curtain 60s psych!)- Label:PARTICLES Eastern bloc rock! 'Velvet Revolution Volume Two' celebrates the hugely innovative and unique sound that was engineered behind the infamous Iron Curtain in cold war Eastern Europe. Enigmatic, bizarre and genious are just a few words that could describe this music, yet they only offer brief praise of the overlooked craft created by a generation whose hindered hopes and dreams were recorded in the 1960s and 1970s. These sounds survive as monumental works in their own right and stand as a testament to their art whilst serving a lesson to those in the west who thought they knew it all. COMP CD $12 SKU:20137

"After years of searching, we have finally discovered a copy of this mega-rare garage LP from an unknown group from Missouri. From 1968, these guys did cover versions of the songs of their day even better than the original artists with a great fuzz garage sound! It is a true shame we do not know the names of these musicians, as the album provides us with no credits whatsoever to these truly talented guys. Mini-LP cardboard sleeve format. Also includes their ultra-rare 45 tracks." LP $12 SKU:14794

That success led to the release of 49th Parallelís only album. All hyperbole aside, it is easily one of the top Canadian rock albums of the psychedelic era.LP $21 SKU:16049
AHBEZ, EDEN- EDEN’S ISLAND (1960 Psych before the term was even invented!)Label:FANTÔME PHONOGRAPHIQUE Though he was originally from Brooklyn and raised by adoptive parents in rural Kansas, George Alexander Aberle aka eden ahbez, is about as California as they come. He was discovered in the 1940s while working in one of Los Angeles' earliest raw vegetarian restaurants and was known throughout the 50s and 60s for being spotted on the streets of LA in full white robe, sandals, and beard, and legendarily camping underneath the first L in the HOLLYWOOD sign. After writing numerous hits for jazz and pop singers, including the iconic "Nature Boy" made famous by Nat King Cole in 1948, ahbez (who spelled his name with lower case lettering because he deemed only God and Infinity worthy of capitalization) recorded his only long playing record in 1960. A combination of exotica arrangements and beat era poetry, the album sold poorly at the time but has since become regarded as an exotica classic that transcends the trappings of the genre. Absolutely essential LA weirdness from one of the original LA weirdos. LP $19 SKU:16753
ALEXANDER, WILLIE - Solo Loco (Test Pressing) WAREHOUSE FIND -Label:Bomp Records 1981. Willie "Loco" Alexander (born 13 January 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American singer and keyboard player based in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He played with The Lost, The Bagatelle and The Grass Menagerie before becoming a member of The Velvet Underground in late 1971, joining fellow Grass Menagerie alumni Doug Yule and Walter Powers and replacing Sterling Morrison, who had gone off to pursue an academic career. With the Velvet Underground, Alexander toured England, Scotland and The Netherlands in support of then-current album Loaded. After completing the tour on November 21, 1971 in Groningen, the band planned to start recording a new album, but band manager Steve Sesnick sent all of the band but Yule home, presumably to retain maximum control of the product (the resulting album was Squeeze, released in 1973) and effectively ending Alexander's time with the band. After leaving The Velvet Underground, he enjoyed a chequered career, both solo and with his Boom Boom Band, that lasts to this day. In-between, Alexander teamed up with Powers to tour France in 1982 for French punk record label New Rose Records, in 1987 opening for Dramarama and in 2006 for a tour with the legendary Boom Boom band. In addition to his storied music career, in 1994, Willie narrated a local film entitled Middle Street made by fellow Gloucester native, independent filmmaker, Henry Ferrini. Willie has also contributed many songs to the soundtracks for Henry's other films. LP $15 SKU:10176
ALLAN DAVIE AND THE ARROWS - Arrow Dynamic Sounds ( 60s Surf/Fuzz ) LAST COPIES -Label:TOTAL ENERGY Starting in the '60s as a surf group, Davie Allan & the Arrows took instrumentalmusic a step further, hot-wiring their sound with the abuse of fuzz pedal. "Talking about pop culture, baby? Allan was an architect, a natural fact rock & roll artist. Allan's ax rocks, stalks and talks with heat, assurance and (believe it or not) a maturity that transforms the oft-shallow rock-instro into epic-scale slabs of rock & roll expression. Dazzling." - L.A. Weekly LP $10 SKU:4480

APRIL MARCH & STEVE HANFT -Magic Monsters (FRench flower Pop) DINGED CORNER BARGAIN! 180 gram Label:MARTYRS OF POP (France) SMALL DINGED CORNER, BIG SAVINGS! French pop/psych treat for all! Record Collector said of the album: “French pop meets flower pop: April March is a highly talented individual who’s collaborated with Brian Wilson and Quentin Tarantino, illustrated with Spiderman creator Steve Ditko, animated for Ren & Stimpy and here hooks up with film director and musician Hanft, harking back to classic 1960s French pop and West Coast psych. March’s lyrical, melodic tones gently trip over each song, with ‘Attention Cherie’ a study in tippy-toe French pop and ‘Flashback Part II’ supplying more grit with simple March vocal stylings on a romantic bent. When Haft pipes up, even while claiming to be a ‘Killer on the run…,’ the atmosphere retains a sense of period innocence, with flowers a-plenty and sunshine beaming. 4 stars.” the label said: “Tracking April March's movements is a complicated matter. She plays very few shows but packs them in when she does. Her songs, perhaps because of their hyper-originality and cinematic style, appear often in films including in the work of Quentin Tarrentino, Gus Van Sant, and Alexander Payne. She has recorded and collaborated with great artists like Brian Wilson, Ronnie Spector, Bertrand Burgalat, Jonathan Richman and Alain Chamfort. Her early career as an illustrator, assisting Spider Man's creator Steve Ditko, and as animator for such cult favorites as Ren and Stimpy and Pee Wee’s Playhouse betrays her innate gift for both visual and iconoclastic expression.” 180 gram vinyl, limited to 500 copies. PHOENIX BIRD- F.T.C (1969 New Hampshire power trio)Label:AMERICAN SOUND / Parchment Farm’: numbered, w/picture sleeve. - Phoenix Bird were a New Hampshire trio who formed in 1969, and cut these two songs to an acetate in 1970 or shortly thereafter, with the intention of releasing them as a single. That didn't happen until four decades after the fact. Per the liner notes, PB had "hopes of being the next big power trio." Had it been released on schedule, "F.T.C (Fuck the Cops)" would have beaten N.W.A. to the punch by a good twenty years; sonically, it sounds like the band was cutting it's teeth on Cream. The B-side is 'Parchment Farm,’ a rendition of the old-time prison standard that Blue Cheer turned inside-out for their 1968 opus, "Vincebus Eruptum.” With a great cover of Blue Cheer track! A BOLHA -Um Passo a Frente (60s Brazilian Psych GATEFOLD COVER Label:GROOVIE HAND NUMBERED Brazilian band the Bubbles became the toast of the underground Rio de Janeiro scene, backing Tropicalist singer Gal Costas residence at the Sucata night club in 1970. They won the "Best Band of the Festival" award at the VII FIC of 1971 (International Festival of Songs), the same year they appeared on Lenos "Vida y obra de Johnny McCartney" album. After venturing to England to attend the Isle of Wight Festival, they decided to experiment with a heavier sound, more akin to UK bands of that era (Deep Purple, Cream, King Crimson, Humble Pie, with a little Beatles "White Album" in for good measure) than that of their Brazilian cohorts. A name change to A Bolha later, still loaded with verve and swagger, fueled by drugs, they recorded their first album, which has secured a permanent place as one of the best hard psych rock albums to ever emerge from South America. The LP, "Um Passo a frente" (A step forward), was released in 1973 by the Continental label, in a gatefold cover which was quite luxurious for the era. This masterpiece, now impossibly hard to find as an original, certainly made a name for A Bolha in the pantheon of 1970s Brazilian rock. But success in the early 1970s was not like it had once been in the old Jovem Guarda or Tropicalist days, when bands had weekly TV shows to help them become well- known nationwide-and eventually, worldwide. In other words, the meager abilities of Continental to promote the album made it a collectors item, not the fate a band would actively seek for their recordings. The lp is a replica in a gatefold cover, and includes the infamous hard- rocking 1971 single as bonus tracks. LP $19 SKU:12031

An in-depth insert with a wealth of never-before-seen-photos traces the history of the band that brought “Abstractmania” to the New York area in the sixties. Acoustic guitars, subtle percussion, pastoral flute work and some warm vocals make The Tree People's music absolutely ahead of its time. A real beauty! Pepper', Love's 'Forever Changes', The Zombies' 'Odyssey & Oracle' and the legacies of The Left Banke, Billy Nicholls, Mystic Astrologic Crystal Band, Merry-Go Round and the like. In other words, this is a truly essential LP for genre freaks! LP $24 SKU:20741
TONGUE - Keep on Truckin- forgotten classic of late '60s American psych)Label:LION Tongue were a blues-based, organ-fueled, country and rural folk-influenced hard rock band that emerged from the copious student population of countercultural Wisconsin. They were on the road for 10 years and played 250 gigs a year without flying to a single one of them. LP $15 SKU:19452
