JIM CARROLL BAND - A WORLD WITHOUT GRAVITY Label:RHINO NOTE: NOT SEALED, MINT DISC. Archive copy previously owned by either the owner of ALIVE or BOMP . A definitive collection featuring the best sides from the group's acclaimed studio albums, plus rare and unreleased mid-'80s recordings!Carroll was a New York poet living in California when punk exploded in the late 1970s. He rightly sensed that punk was as much a lyrical stance as a musical one. Inspired by contemporaries like Patti Smith and Richard Hell, Carroll found himself a band and started spewing his literate and often fatalistic verse over a solid 4/4 beat. His surprise 1980 hit "People Who Died" sounded both shocking and exciting as it roared out of bored radios all across America. The rest of this guitar-heavy set--including the classic "Wicked Gravity" and the previously unreleased "Differing Touch"--paints similarly edgy portraits of lurkers and fringe dwellers. The rote rock backing occasionally gets a little tepid, but Carroll's bitter-junkie tongue burns throughout. --Michael Ruby CD $5 SKU:27399

SCREAM BEG & SHOUT RHINO BOX-SIX CDs wrapped in mockup 45 sleeves inside carrying cases WITH HANDLE! Label:RHINO NOTE: NOT SEALED, MINT DISCS. Archive copy previously owned by either the owner of ALIVE or BOMP Limited Edition, Numbered AN ESSENTIAL COLLECTION OF 1960'S SOUL AND R&B, #23892 OF A LIMITED EDITION RELEASE BY RHINO RECORDS. KEPT IN NONSMOKING ADULT HOME. WILL SHIP VIA USPS MEDIA MAIL, IN RECYCLED MATERIALS TO HELP SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT. PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS BEFORE PURCHASING.... DESCRIPTION: BEG, SCREAM & SHOUT!: THE BIG OL' BOX OF '60S SOUL also contains a set of collectors' trading cards featuring a song on each card, the artist performing, and details about each song's history. BEG, SCREAM & SHOUT won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package - Boxed. Six CDs and 144 songs of classic '60s soul, including selections by every major performer in the idiom (except for Sam Cooke and Sly Stone, who were unavailable for licensing reasons), as well as numerous influential minor performers, one-shot artists, and just plain unknowns. The music is classic, and the packaging is an event in itself, with the discs enclosed in a mock briefcase for carrying 45 singles, and trading cards for each song on the volume that have photos and trivia questions on front, and mini essays on the back.
Extravagance in packaging is no vice, especially when the media--six CDs wrapped in mockup 45 sleeves inside one of those carrying cases that were the in thing for late-'60s singles buyers--so perfectly enhance the sounds contained within. Of course, it's what's in the digital bitstream that counts, and Beg, Scream & Shout!'s selections are masterfully chosen. Unlike Rhino's excellent but somewhat predictable R&B Box, this one strikes a better balance between well-known hits and artists and great sides by second-tier acts. This approach allows many more surprises to break through over the course of the 144 tracks, almost all presented in single-mix mono. Half-remembered, too-little-heard, never-heard--a big part of the experience of the soul decade is here, with even the most familiar tunes thrown into relief by the jumble of chronology and styles. Whether the most indelible legends (James, Aretha, Otis), unjustly forgotten stars (Joe Simon, Tyrone Davis), or great one- and two-shot voices, the set just keeps moving with smart selections. Grand discoveries abound--Otis Clay's "That's How It Is (When You're in Love)," which begins with the singer imploring, "Please, somebody take your hand and slap some sense in me"; C & the Shells' Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams-penned "You Are the Circus (I Am the Clown)"--plus original versions of "Tainted Love" (by Gloria Jones), "Mustang Sally" (by its author, Sir Mack Rice), "Piece of My Heart" (by Erma Franklin, Aretha's sister), "He Was Really Sayin' Something" (by the Velvelettes), and "Leaving Here" (by Eddie Holland). Consistently revelatory and fun, fun, fun, this is pretty much everything a genre box should be. --Rickey Wright CD $100 SKU:27397

6 FEET UNDER -IN RETROSPECT Label:ARF ARF 19 TRACKS OF COUNTERCULTURAL PSYCH FROM COLONIA, NJ CD $12 SKU:27000

BLACKSTONE -On The Line (arena style AC/DC, Bon Jovi)Label:PACEMAKER Arena rock reminiscent of the bands that were shaped by these musicians — AC/DC, Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard — can be heard here. Big Riffs. Catchy Chorus’. Monster Solos. Makes sense, as Blackstone evolved from Rhinoceros when band members returned to Toronto, where they released this one rare album on GRT Records. Blackstone came together in July 1972, with the help of Frazier Mohawk and his business partner, Gary Howsam. The group was completed with a new drummer, Richard Steinberg and the singer and harp player Frank 'Zeke' Sheppard, who'd played in Mainline. More importantly the new band saw the welcomed return of Danny Weis. With a suitable collection of songs to record, Finley invited his old friend Paul Rothchild up to Toronto to produce the band, a wise move bearing in mind that the original Rhinoceros members had enjoyed their greatest success with Rothchild at the helm. A deal with GRT was arranged and this album, 'On The Line,' was duly cut at Toronto's RCA Recording Studios. “On The Line” contains some excellent songs, notably a cover of Dr John's 'Qualified', and the Weis-Steinberg collaboration 'Mountain'.” CD $10 SKU:26193

BOYZ NEX' DOOR- RADIO HONOLULU-JAPANESE PRESSING-Label:1&2 GREAT RAW ITALIAN PUNK-RAWK! CD $10 SKU:26969

CHRISTMAS - ST (1970 psych Velvet Underground style)Label:PACEMAKER Dreamy and atmospheric, with lovely vocals and understated guitar work suffused with a melancholic vibe every bit the match of that of the Velvet Underground's third album — with a touch of early Grateful Dead rumble — comparisons all the more telling when you hear the ambitious 21-minute instrumental 'Jungle Fabulous' that represented the original LP’s entire second side, and which closes out the proceedings. This is the debut album by Bob Bryden's (Reign Ghost) "dream band", first released on Paragon in 1970 the same day as the second Reign Ghost album! The rarest artifact by this much-beloved Canadian underground band finally sees its compact disc debut — a great event for psychedelic fans worldwide! CD $12 SKU:26893

COFRADIA DE LA FLOR SOLAR- ST (1971 S American psych)-Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) Named after a student artistic community 50 km south of Buenos Aires, 'The Brotherhood Of The Solar Flower' was originally formed in 1968 by three musically inclined participants. After a compilation appearance and RCA/Vik 7" their only LP, produced by Billy Bond, was finally released in 1971 on the Microfon label. With fourth member Kubero Diaz on lead guitar, the group created a slightly-stoned mix of acoustic/electric fuzz guitars and phased vocals, and the album went on to become one of the most highly-regarded Argentinian rock LP's, alongside releases by Almendra, Vox Dei, etc.; a catchy rock record with psychedelic flavor that has some great moments, as any album combining the talents of Kubero Diaz and the great Billy Bond! CD $10 SKU:26086

CONTINENTAL CRAWLER- The Anthology 1977-1979 featuring former members of punk band The Misfits-Label:NOT ALOUD . Continental Crawler was many things rolled into one; one part garage, one part power-pop, one part punk — but all featuring former members of punk band The Misfits. In the mid 70’s, The Misfits’ lead singer Glenn Danzig was a member of several groups, playing original material with drummer Jim Catania and guitarists Stevie Lin and Chaz Jones. In 1977, Catania and Lin joined up with bassist Mike Myers and became Continental Crawler; Chaz Jones then joined on keys and guitar. Lin and Jones were Danzig’s first writing partners, uniting his lyrics and original music from Lin and Jones and Catania eventually moved into drummer’s chair for The Misfits. Catania left the Misfits in 1978 to return to Continental Crawler, recording a 45 that now sells for $50+ on the collector’s market. This CD gathers the original six Continental Crawler studio tracks, along with rare live, demos, and basement tapes recorded between 1977 and 1979. CD $10 SKU:26410

LITTER- $100 Fine (60's garage psych classic) -Label:ARF ARF 1968 classic garage lp w/ unre demos. 20 page booklet The 1968 follow up to their stunning debut, Distortions, finds the Litter heading into psychedelic territory with a stunning remake of 'Kaleidoscope' as well as their first original songs on record. An early version of '(Under The Screaming Double) Eagle' shows the direction that guitarist Zippy Caplan was heading with his future band Lightning. CD $10 SKU:27011

LOBLOLLY -Hymns to Dymphnashrinkwrapped-Label: Hard to find — and hard to define — rock from Milwaukee: is it space rock? punk? hard rock? noise? quasi-Devo? a little bit Pavement? all these things in turn and at once? The first track ('White Flight Suburban Nightmare’) sounds like Sonic Youth; the second (‘Burning Feet’) is punky and weird; the third (‘Is It So’) is in a dissonant guitar rock space; the fourth ('Tell Me About Your Perfect Smelling Dreams’) is peppier and snotty and then spins off into jam-land; the fifth (‘Prowl’) rocks out; the seventh (‘Going Nowhere’) sounds like a lost Pixies track… and so on. Featuring Plasticland guitarist Dan Mullen as half of the main writing duo together with photographer and guitarist Veronica Rusnak, supported by Andy Pagel on drums. Apparently, "Hymns To Dymphna" includes reworked tunes from their demo "You’ve Taken Too Much Acid," as well as all-new material. Surprising, weird, and recommended. CD $10 SKU:26989

MEGALITH -Risen from the Grave (St. Louis based 80s power thrash metal)Label:ROCKADROME Reissue of this St. Louis based power thrash metal group’s unique and promising 80s demo, plus a live concert recording from the night of lead singer and guitarist Joe Bufalo’s tragic death. Rockadrome have been fans of this group’s demo since our days as King Klassic records when we showed interest, along with other labels, in signing Megalith some 25 years ago! Some dreams never die!" CD $15 SKU:26412

MOOT, THEE -Peel it to Reveal it (Paisley-hued pop psych) SAALE! Label:SELF PRODUCED Thee Moot are purveyors of Paisley-hued melodic pop and psych. Formed in early 2016 by former Onlookers Nick Stone and Mark Leech with ex-Transients Freezer Pinch and DC, they launched an EP entitled 'Tomorrows Calling' in 2018 and as a prelude to their much awaited debut album 'Peel It To Reveal It'. CD $10 SKU:24022

OZ KNOZZ -Ruff Mix+ bonus (PRIVATE PRESS 70S HARD ROCK )Label:PROGAOR 15 First legit reissue of one of the best US private press hard rock/progressive rock albums of the 1970s. Formed in 1969 in Houston, TX, Oz Knozz's original crew included multi-instrumentalists Jack Alford, Bill Massey and Duane Massey. Alford left the group in 1971 and was replaced by drummer Marty Naul, while the next year the trio was joined by guitarist Richard Heath. The band had also a three-man horn section, which was dropped quite fast, although horns remained a part of the band's sound, even on their rare and epochal 1975 private press debut ''Ruff Mix,” released on the band’s own Ozone label.“Ruff Mix” mainly grooves in Hard Rock territory—the second track 'Peanut Butter Yoni' sounds a bit like Judas Priest with a proto-Metal feeling; but the album also has elements of Progressive Rock, Horn Rock and Pomp Rock. Like most bands of the era, the idea was to throw out a few different styles to see if something would stick… the theory being that a major label would hear the private album by chance and sign said band so they could open for Led Zeppelin or Foghat's next US tour… or something like that. What separates Oz Knozz from others is a strong compositional component, the band have plenty of original ideas and muster superb instrumentation. The guitar work ranges from hard and powerful to melodic and bluesy and is supported by some great keyboard, including awe-inspiring organ and synth waves. The three-part 15-minute 'Doodley Squat’ suite features heavy dual keyboard parts, crunchy guitars and expressive vocals; the result is a terrific Hard Prog track with lot of energy. For many, the standout track is the groovy and infectious horn rocker, which sounds as dated as the movement itself and easily could have been from 1969. High energy and impressive songwriting CD $12 SKU:26416

PAMELA LUCIA- INTO SPACE WITH ..(weird 1969 for fans of Shaggs, Sun Ra and Legendary Stardust Cowboy) Label:ARF ARF Originally Released in 1969 on the Gulfstream label, this truly eccentric album can only be described as free-spirited bebop stuck in Interstellar Overdrive. Any fans of the Shaggs, Sun Ra, and the Legendary Stardust Cowboy will surely be attracted to this glorious joyously uncoordinated collection of paralyzing songs. RICH HOPKINS & LUMINARIOS - Buried Treasures-Label:SAN JACINTO "If Neil Young released Buried Treasures, it would be hailed as a return to form. And when Drive-By Truckers evidence similarly unselfconscious immediacy, we praise their ability to inhabit characters. But Rich Hopkins is for real, a regular guitar-toting guy who grew a conscience in the Peace Corps, cowriting his best songs to date with his hair-salon-owner girlfriend, Lisa Novak. The Tucson troubadour’s 28th studio set offers Crazy Horse-style workouts and plangent psychedelic feedback jams, but, as shown by the bleakly beautiful Friend of the Shooter, they are increasingly engaged with the southwest’s dark underbelly." —Stewart Lee

"It’s a wonder Rich Hopkins finds the time. When not playing with the Sidewinders or the Sand Rubies, he remains the prolific and creative backbone of The Luminarios. This time around he’s turned the guitars up again for a psychedelic mash of band jams and slow-burning grooves best typified by the brooding, elongated epic, Friend Of The Shooter, which sits well in Hopkins’ canon of storytelling songs. Outta My Head (Outta My Mind) is the flip side to Hopkins’ denser jams with its 60s pop rock feel, while Strutter glides along on a colourful swell of organ with Lisa Novak’s chiming vocals bringing the chorus to life. It seems churlish to not mention the extra disc (A Long Walk Home) too, a set of field songs from Hopkins’ time spent with the Peace Corps in rural Paraguay, both scratchy demos and studio recordings and all with a charm of their own." —Classic Rock CD $12 SKU:25060

ROCKY KOELPIN & the SATANIC ORCHESTRA - Oh, Betsy (rootsy Neil Young-esque)-Label:Spit in Your Face Really interesting rootsy Neil Young-esque disc (c. “Freedom”) from 1996 opens up with a couple of reflective tunes (albeit with nice Moog on them) before going full Crazy Horse on ‘I Wonder,’ on which gravel-voiced Rocky sings, “I was the hottest thing in town, but I’ve achieved invisibility.” As we write this, there is some truth to that statement. It’s always interesting to end up distributing a disc by someone about whom virtually nothing can be found online. Aside from his obituary, David James “Rocky” Koelpin is one such person. That obit notes that Rocky was passionate about his musical pursuits. Rocky Koelpin and The Otters and his other band, Generic Beans, appeared at clubs, on radio station WMSE 91.7 and on Milwaukee's Summerfest Rock Stage. Milwaukee Journal reviewer, Paul Christianson apparently said, "you either loved him or hated him". He had a brief career as a travel agent, but his meticulous attention to detail and electronics expertise resulted in his favorite employment in The Strategic Sensors Group/Space Systems Division at Honeywell Corporation — his dream job. A description of his achievements at Honeywell left his technologically challenged family lost. When asked what he did, Rocky would reply, "I'm a genius!” So here we are with this disc by a beloved (or hated) eccentric, songwriting, guitar playing, undiscovered “genius.” My favorite track might be the Neil Young-meets-Violent Femmes’-“Hallowed Ground” -with-a-Tom Waits-ian-melody, down-home march, ’Someday I’ll Lead the Parade,’ the kind of song which could only be created in middle America, on which Rocky sings: ‘The sweetest time to rest, all is forgiven from the past; someday, I will, one day I know I will, someday I will lead the parade.” Happily, with this disc, Rocky’s invisibility may not remain an absolute truth for eternity, and he might well lead the parade... somewhere. CD $10 SKU:26988

SCRATCH BONGO WAX- LET ME BE -JAPANESE PRESSING (CALIF PUNKS) Label:1&2 LONG-AWAITED 2ND CD BY NUTTY CA. PUNK-ROCK CD $10 SKU:26986

SIDEWINDERS- Auntie Ramos Pool Hall - 30th Anniversary CD (Arizona rock )Label:RCA Jangly folk-rock moments instantly familiar to any fan of mid-'80s R.E.M. Yet its traditional feel — part psychedelic pop and part dustbowl blues — suggests influences stretching back at least two decades... Hopkins' expansive "big guitar" references Neil Young and Crazy Horse; his uncomplicated melodies are as immediate and hummable as Tom Petty's. And Slutes' enigmatic lyrical concerns (the drug of love, the mystic powers of the sun and moon, the dark edges of the soul) — delivered in the best romantic baritone since Neil Diamond— make for a charismatic combination." —Fred Mills, Trouser Press CD $15 SKU:25865

T2 1971- 1972 (Obscure 70s psych prog)180 GRAM with insert, liner notes and photos LPLabel:GUERSSEN Certainly one of the reissues of the year: Unreleased studio recordings from 1971 and 1972, which were originally planned as an album release. If this had been released at the time, they would have certainly gone to the premier league of major rock stardom along with Free, Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster etc. Sadly, this was never released and so we are happy to present this previously unheard underground masterpiece.î Tough to argue with the notion of a masterpiece, judging by the bandÍs only other recordings which have seen release to date. Track list: And Time, Looking Back, Questions & Answers, Seventy-Two, The Clown, Closing Your Eyes, Into The Red, PDQ 180 gram vinyl edition; Shrinkwrapped LP $22 SKU:14790
