PIAGGIO SOUL COMBinATIoN - Space Diary-Label:HYPNOTIC BRIDGE The Piaggio Soul Combination is a musical collective from Pisa, Italy, where long-standing mod Marco "Piaggio" Piaggesi has combined the best singers and musicians of the local Latin-soul scene to create a dynamic fusion of sound. Mixing Italian, American and Caribbean musicians, the band builds a solid foundation of polyrhythms before adding tasty bass lines and groove-laden guitars. A tight-as-hell horn section and a fat organ sound complete the picture, offering a boiling pot of soul grooves, up-tempos, Latin-jazz movers with northern soul. In 2020, they started their collaboration with Arkansas-bred lead vocalist Lakeetra Knowles. But dance floor-oriented northern soul is not their only passion; they also have a taste for psych pop, and on their exclusive release for Hypnotic Bridge they feature two great guest musicians: psychedelic guitar legend Dome LaMuerte, founder of the seminal band Not Moving, who takes the axe-man role on 'Space Diary,' and Greek vocal therapist, experimenter and Maestra Marina Mulopulos, lead vocalist on 'Dimmelo.' When The Piaggio Soul Combination recorded a few songs with legendary Italian guitarist Dome Le Muerte, they knew he would bring his psychedelic brilliance to the mix. And he did. So much so, in fact, that Space Diary didnt quite fit the vibe of their recent album and found its way instead to the lysergic sanctuary of Hypnotic Bridge Records. Dome's trebly, tremolo-barred chords are reminiscent of John Cipollina's work with Quicksilver Messenger Service (which with tracks such as 'Dino's Song' also embraced the concept of a "new breed leaving for unknown shores"). But the sound of the 1967 'Satanic Majesties'-era Rolling Stones serves as the greatest inspiration for 'Space Diary,' both in the songs "space journey" topic as well as the massive use of Mellotronic flutes, violins and horns. 'Dimmelo' was inspired by The Open Mind's 'Free As The Breeze,' with The Piaggio Soul Combination adding Indian flavors and a Kula Shakeresque "Delhi disco" beat to give the song an undeniably global feel and appeal. 45 RPM $10 SKU:25499

Blessed with a succession of great singers like Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, and Dennis Edwards, any of whom could have easily fronted their own group, the Temptations racked up countless hits between 1961 and 1971, helped immeasurably by Motown's astounding songwriting stable. CONJERTI, MORREALE & DIBLEY"-Earth Free (1970’s IYL Neil Young,CSNY-SAALE! Label:VOID An album that has the unfinished feel of a demo record (which is good), a bit like Merrell Fankhauser's “Fapardokly” LP from 5 years earlier—except the main influence here is early Neil Young. The main appeal to present-day listeners will be the minor key acoustic guitar strumming that makes it a folk record, and the minimal but effective lead guitar that fleshes out the songs and gives them an unusual edge. The lyrics wont appeal to modern-day cynics, but the youthful, melancholic delivery gives them a depth beyond the misleading, easy-listening label assigned to this reissue. The title track is a simple but effective paean to natural beauty that closes the record in a satisfying manner. Comparable records in terms of feel would include the likes of Fenner, Leland & O'Brien, Dave Lamb & Gye Whiz, Songs of David Lewis, etc - if any of those appeal, then this record will also. Lysergia review: “Recently discovered Christian hippie 1970s folk/rock LP with a nice, loose vibe. Sound is typical for the style, rooted in a melodic CSNY sensibility, recalling Stills' melancholic moves in particular. I also catch an Eastcoasty "Big Pink" vibe here and there. Opening track is deceptively soft and poppy, after which the LP gradually increases its depth, ending up with some truly great numbers that rate alongside the best of the genre. Vocals are not remarkable but fit the overall reflective mood well, while the band plays loose (sometimes very loose) and laidback, with a bass unusually high in the mix for added groove. The pressing plant accidentally threw out the booklets! Nikki Sudden's third album with the Jacobites, in collaboration with guitarist/singer Dave Kusworth. Beautiful songs of bittersweet life stories, a waterfall of guitars, and carries the unmistakable mark and sound of Nikki Sudden. Nikki’s first band Swell Maps has been one of the main influences of Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. Members of REM recorded an album as his backup band in 1992 and the Lemonheads, among others, covered one of his songs. JAHN, LOTHAR -Dreams of (1975 psych/Krautrock) DBL CD digiLabel:LION Lothar Jahn’s "February '75” single was released by the German label Sound Records in 1977. It was a very unusual record, somewhere between psychedelic, folk, and Krautrock. It was reviewed thus on Discogs: “A mysterious journey through Cosmic Psych Folk Kraut, whatever you may call it. Fantastic, from beginning to end. Another Kraut on 45 milestone.” The newly recorded album, “Dreams of ’75,” is an extended riff on the original single, taking that smaller vision as a starting point and then launching into a weirder and wilder psychedelic/progressive stereoscopic headspace than was evident (or possible) on the original single. Both the rare single and the new album are included in this very limited 2xCD digipack edition. CD $17 SKU:25245

JOSEFUS --Not Dead Yet (Texas hard rock Unreleased 1978 Studio Sessions & Live)-Label:SHROOMANGEL Josefus are part of the first wave of Hard Rock bands formed in the end of the 60s, being the true pioneers of Heavy Rock in Texas. Their Dead Man album is one of the greatest American Hard Rock albums of the early 70s and deserves all the cult status it has been given all these years. The band resurfaced in the late 70s and then again in the late 80s, recording sporadically never abandoning their Bluesy Hard Rock roots. In the new millennium when everyone was thought the band was history, Josefus hits the stages again and keeps to this day active. This collection of rare material starts with 4 demo tracks from 1978, plus selected live cuts (mostly from 2012), where we can see the power of the band revived and refreshed after 5 decades of existence.

"Those who've experienced Josiah's groove-heavy swagger know that it's the guitar of Mat Bethancourt in the starring role, but this trio relies almost as much on the backing rhythms on 'Procession.' Blink and you'll miss the first two tracks, 'Procession' and 'Broken Doll," both of which are under two and a half minutes, but for the other three cuts of studio material ('Thirteen Scene,' highlight 'Dying Day' and the more garage rock 'Dead Forever'), it's just as much Beacom and Beasley's show as it is Bethancourt's. That would be the end if not for the five live tracks from Josiah's Swedish run in 2007. Four out of the five - 'Looking At The Mountain,' 'Time To Kill,' 'Silas Brainchild' and closer 'I Can't Seem To Find It' - come from the band's final recorded full-length, 'No Time,' and only 'Malpaso,' reaches back further, having first appeared on the 2001 10" 'Out Of The First Rays.' Not that we needed it by this time, but these live versions are basically just further confirmation of what underground rock lost with Josiah. LEOPOLD, PERRY - Experiments in Metaphysics (70s hippie artifact)Label:GEAR FAB Experiment in Metaphysics is one of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts of the hippie era. Recorded live during a five-hour session in the basement of a shoe-repair shop in June of 1970, most of the 300 original copies of Experiment in Metaphysics were simply given away in one afternoon, yet, inexplicably, bootleg copies of the album later sprang up half-way around the world. The reason for the album's staying power is apparent: the music is gorgeous, first-rate progressive folk. In fact, Side Two of the original LP's label was given the title "Acid-Folk" (the other side was called "Kommercial"), probably one of the very first uses of that term. Perry Leopold creates a proto-gothic ambience full of dark and brooding imagery that is much less cartoonish than most of what passes as "acid," while maintaining that music's visceral punch. Like much of the youth countercultural scene of the times, Leopold can occasionally give into mystical pretentiousness. Experiment in Metaphysics has moments -- namely the spoken-word monologue in the middle of the mostly stellar opening cut, "The Absurd Paranoid" -- of philosophical meandering. Still, even those moments maintain a period charm. Experiment in Metaphysics is exquisitely intelligent and forward-looking. Leopold's mood is much more pious than most music that came out of the psychedelic era, and, indeed, extreme piety tends to be a product of youth, yet there is something aged and wise about Leopold's music. The "Kommercial" side, cryptically subtitled "SMOKE," is conceptually bleak, and after "The Absurd Paranoid," it takes on a much more palpable quality, grounded in experience ("Cold in Philadelphia" and the gorgeous "The 35th of May"). The "Acid-Folk" side (subtitled "DROP") opens with the stark, multi-part title track. Each of the three songs in this section is a virtual mini-suite, with the closing cut, "The U.S.S. Commercial," standing as the album's magnum opus. Experiment in Metaphysics shows some truly progressive and experimental songwriting, even for the time period. Each song, even the instrumental cuts, feels like a story, with beginnings and endings and all kinds of interesting ideas and storylines sandwiched in between. LES CALAMITES - ENCORE! (80s Go Go style!)? Label:BORN BAD French band The Calamités consisted of three teenage friends, Caroline, Isabelle and Odile from Beaune, Burgundy. The band was formed in the early '80s and soon they recorded their debut album 'A Bride Abattue' released on the label New Rose. They made it to an appearance on regional and then national television, and their sound was compared tot he U.S. female band The Go-Go's. When all the doors in the music industry seemed to be wide open, they decided to focus on their studies instead. Caroline quit the band, while Odile and Isabelle once again released another hit single: 'Vélomoteur' produced by Daniel Chenevez, one half of the succesful pop duo Niagara. What remained is a dozen of recordings, earlier reissued on the label Last Call, affiliated to its parent label New Rose, a number of TV appearances on video hubs and a thorough fansite. All this to remember one of the most poppy sounding French girl-punk bands, with a talent for writing a handful of good songs turned into classics. And that is a rare gift. CD $18 SKU:25195

The songs Oakenshade' and 'Waxing Of The Moon' are poetic genius, using a guitar with a damaged bridge to create a sitar like drone, the vocals have an air of resigned melancholia, and the lyrics connect with a mystical understanding of and reverence for nature. HE PUT THE BOMP- - PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED psych/garage tracks by RADIO MOSCOW,/BLACK KEYS /NIKKI CORVETTE/BARRACUDAS -Label:BOMP his is not a tribute album per se, but more of a remembrance of Greg Shaw and his unique perspective.We asked the bands to go into the studio and cut the cover song they felt was most in tune with the idea of the label and the result is a nice brew of garage punk, power pop and psychedelia that we think captures the spirit and sound of Bomp records.

The Plimsouls and Lyres covered the Easybeats and the Outsiders respectively, the Black Keys surprised us with their rendering of the Cramps "I Can't Find My Mind", while the Dwarves and the Briefs sent their versions of punk classics by the Weirdos and the Zeros.

We also got some nice surprises with the teaming up of Captain Sensible (The Damned) and the late Nikki Sudden for an acoustic cover of Iggy's "Kill City", Chris Wilson of the Flamin' Groovies joined the Barracudas to capture Rocky Erickson's "Two Headed Dog," and a Cleveland super group of sorts tabbed The Dukes Of Earls was formed with ex-members of the Dead Boys and the Stiv Bators' band.

Also included is an amazing rendition of Rockin' Horse's classic "Don't You Ever Think I Cry" by Buffalo Killers (currently on tour with the Black Crowes), a cover of Spacemen 3 by The Warlocks, and much more. The Last even dug up for the occasion their previously unreleased rendering of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso" recorded back in 1977. Brigg were a rural Pennsylvania folk-tinged psychedelic band formed by three high school friends: Rob Morse, Jeff Willoughby, and Rusty Foulke. In 1973, they borrowed the money to record their first album together. They called it Brigg after one member saw the name in a dream. It was recorded at a grocery store converted into a 4-track studio. The photos for the cover were taken in a purportedly haunted house in Danville. The band members pressed 1000 copies and sold some to their friends but never played a live show together. They divided the remaining copies between them and went their separate ways.
