GUITAR ARMY- JOHN SINCLAIR -PAPERBACK GIVEN TO US BY SINCLAIR HIMSELF Label: (John gave us a few copies, we still have our autographed hard cover, dont worry!) Street Writings/Prison Writings Book by John Sinclair, 1972 Douglas Book Corporation, New York Guitar Army is comprised of articles and essays by John Sinclair, who managed the MC5 rock n' roll band and led the White Panthers and the Rainbow People's Party during the late 1960s and early 1970s. John was sent to prison for marijuana possession in 1969. A concert and rally calling for his release included John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, Commander Cody, Bobby Seale, Ed Sanders, Jerry Rubin and others. He gained his freedom in 1971 when the Michigan Supreme Court overturned the marijuana laws in response to his case. Guitar Army presents the vivid saga of the MC5 band, which had the national hit "Kick Out the Jams" in 1968. It is filled with Sinclair's colorful exhortations to the era's disaffected youth, which he felt were part of an emerging "rainbow culture." The book was designed by noted graphic artist Gary Grimshaw and includes reproductions of over 100 photographs, drawings and posters. BOOKS & MAGS $25 SKU:27332

BADFINGER -ASS Label:APPLE NOTE: Unsealed. Archive copy previously owned by either the owner of ALIVE or BOMP A rawer Badfinger emerges on Ass – self-produced with a no frills vibe that was apparently something of a controversial way for the boys to record at the time, as Apple initially rejected it. It sounds like great rock & roll to us! Sweet melodies and tuneful songs are still the order of the day, but it isn't sweetened, embellished or lushed up in the studio. Titles include "Apple Of My Eye", "Get Away", "Icicles", "Blind Owl", "I Can Love You", "Timeless" and more. CD $10 SKU:27331

CRAMPS- STAY SICK Label:VENGEANCE NOTE: Unsealed. Archive copy previously owned by either the owner of ALIVE or BOMP Reissue of this album from the mutant primal Rock 'n' Roll dynamos. Sex-classic STAY SICK was originally released in 1990 and features more of the dark side of Rockabilly in a jugular vein. The opener, a hopped-up cover of obscure Sun Records tune 'Bop Pills,' proves that rumors of amphetamine usage by the original Memphis rockabilly cats was not exaggerated, and sets the pace for the rest of the album. Hog-wild covers of 'Shortnin' Bread' and 'Muleskinner Blues' probably have the original writers dancing on their graves, and The Cramps' version of the perverse rarity 'Her Love Rubbed Off' shines a lurid spotlight on the only song that Carl Perkins was admittedly ashamed of writing. Plus, STAY SICK delivers loads of action-packed originals celebrating kamikaze thrill-seeking and scary sexy she creatures. This is pure jungle music - one half hillbilly and one half punk. If you can't dig this then you must have 'Daisys Up Your Butterfly'! Still a favorite among rock 'n' roll sickos worldwide. CD $10 SKU:27335

RESTOCKS

LOONS -In The Past (GARAGE PSYCH)Label:THERMIONIC One of two 7"s released by Mike Stax's long-running garage-psychedelic band in 1997, the second year of their existence and still a couple of years before a full-length. Features the original line-up with Eric Bacher (Tell Tale Hearts) and John Chilson (The Hoods). Side 1 pairs the classic US garage composition (made famous by We The People and The Chocolate Watchband) along with a band original. Side 2 is a brooding cover of The Humane Society's "Knock Knock" (a Pebbles and Nuggets fave). Sides play at 33.3 RPM 45 RPM $8 SKU:26418

BLACKOUT - ST (groovy 60s garage)-Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) At last a reissue of a great album that features some of the cheesiest organ sounds (meant in a good way) carved into wax in the 1960’s; groovy and bizarre Hammond runs are present and accounted for, residing happily with the smart songs, the fine guitar playing, and the gravelly vocals of the band’s singers (male and female), on the only album this Polish band ever saw released, just before they changed their name (to Breakout), and their sound (to progressive rock); they started as a beat band, albeit one addicted to the dark side of beat as demonstrated to them in person by Eric Burdon & the Animals; they developed their own weird sound, which was dubbed “Big Beat” by someone clever—a term that still exists in the former Eastern Bloc to describe this sort of offbeat (so to speak), wigged-out and intense home grown music; after some radio success, Blackout apparently recorded a slew of singles, some of which appear here as bonus tracks; twenty songs in all, mostly written by underground novelist and poet Bogdan Loebl, plus liner notes that include an interview with band-leader Tadeusz Nalepa as well as an overview of the recording industry in Poland in the 1960’s. It’s not every day you get historical background and interesting music in the same package! CD $10 SKU:18953

BRAZDA BROTHERS- Time Is Only A Setting Sun..Label:HALLUCINATION ../ You Can Take Me Real HigH CD single reissue of their rare 1977 single — the only follow-up to their mesmerizing album from 1973, which featured acoustic material with bursts of electric guitar and keyboards — some great acid fuzz guitar work. The ultra-rare Brazda Brothers album stands shoulder to shoulder with other much better known similar sounding lost classics of the time such as Relatively Clean Rivers, Rodriguez's "Cold Fact," and Jim Sullivan's “UFO". With their laid-back attitude, sunny rural vibe, and unique voices, the brothers crafted the perfect album for a lazy summer afternoon. 'Time Is Only A Setting Sun’ has a good rollicking folk/rock vibe, with droney keyboard sounds adding a weird element to the mix; ‘You Can Take Me Real High’ has a similar weed-burner vibe to the McKay “Into You” album, if one is looking for a reasonable comparable. CD $8 SKU:27129

CONCRETE RUBBER BAND -Risen Savior(Official reissue of this insane underground basement psychedelic rock album, a massively-rare 1974 release)Label:HIDDEN VISION BIzarre burbling electronic embellishments find unity with abundant fuzz guitar, organ, and male and female lead vocals. A very strange rock album (in the best way), which just happens to have religion as its subject. "Official reissue of this insane underground basement psychedelic rock album, a massively-rare 1974 release on the Missouri-based American Artists label (AAS1164), of which only two or three copies are known to be exist in private collections. The song titles reveal the Christian undercurrent, but don’t be put off by that (if such a thing would be off-putting for you): this is a very strange and unusual rock album which just happens to have religious undertones, replete with organ, fuzz guitar, male and female lead vocals and masses of electronic embellishments—arguably more akin to Debris or Intersystems than anything else. The label says this about it: "Some of the most ‘out there’ psychedelic sounds can be found on this Kansas trio's mega-rare custom LP. The song, ‘Christian,’ for example, opens with a Bach fugue before laying in its steady rock beat punctuated with subterranean wah-wah guitar and a wild, heavily modulated lead. The song, ‘Wicked,’ opens side two with a bizarre amalgam of what sounds like synthesized, bubbling lava pits, frequency oscillations, distorted, sci-fi vocals and shortwave, static patterns. This is psychedelia at its most underground and extreme, with all the ear marks of a bad drug trip which, given the songs dark subject matter, works just fine. Likewise, ‘What Shall We Do?’ opens with a lengthy outpouring of some of the most vicious, distorted, fuzz guitar ever then relaxes into a spooky, dream-like ballad before it climaxes with a flying saucer effect that sounds straight out of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” There are several fine and moody garage tracks here as well. The overall impact is difficult to describe: the songs are highly listenable and quite creative. Dense echoes add to the homemade feel of the entire project. Duncan Long, the main man behind the synths, guitars and song writing is now a published science fiction author, which explains a lot, we think. CD $10 SKU:26057

ERGO SUM - Mexico ( 70s French prog psych rarity ) ! -Label:LION Official reissue of 70s French progressive psychedelic rock rarity. Features thick booklet containting extensive liner notes, photos, etc. and 4 bonus tracks. CD $10 SKU:23498

FREAK SCENE - Psychedelic Psoul ( 60s raga rock ) Label:LION Fresh from his studio experiences with The Deep and the Third Bardo, Rusty Evans decided to create a psychedelic “happening” which would also function as a recording group. He gathered together a few New York musicians, including three members of the Deep (David Bromberg among them), dubbed them the Freak Scene, and began work on the “Psychedelic Psoul” album, which was released in 1967. The intention was to pursue the Indian-Eastern influence in rock—and this raga rock idea is used to great effect on songs like ‘Grok’ and ‘Rose of Smiling Faces’ (sounds like it could have been the sole inspiration for Damon’s “Song of a Gypsy” album). As the only true psychedelic band on Columbia at the time, the Freak Scene got decent exposure. No doubt this number would have been much greater had the band been a touring ensemble, instead of a one-time psychedelic event. The album is gritty, tense, subversive, brittle, and yes, psychedelic. Perfect in its own way. Included as bonus tracks are nine demos from the summer of 1966, some of which would end up in quite a different musical context on The Deep “Psychedelic Moods” and Freak Scene albums. These songs, with their P. F. Sloan/Dylan (or even Sixto Rodriguez) vibe deepen the legacy of edgy, insightful songs from Rusty Evans/Marcus Uzilevsky. Comes with a 16-page booklet which includes a biographical portrait of Marcus, printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper manufactured using biogas energy. CD $10 SKU:11550

GONZALEZ, WALLY -Tunog Pinoy (heavy acid blues psych Pink Floyd style)Label:VICOR ENTERTAINMENT (Philippines) Just listening to the soaring solos of the third track, ‘Pinag-isa’, makes us think how much this sounds like Pink Floyd circa “Dark Side of the Moon”—atmospheric, with breathy vocals, yet thick with that mid-70’s heavy energy at the same time; then you get to ‘Rock & Roll Mama’, and it’s stinging guitar leads and crunching rhythm section all the way; Gonzalez clearly was not a one trick (heavy acid blues rock) pony, which explains why this album has always been held in such high regard among those who had a chance to hear it. CD $10 SKU:18971

GROWING CONCERN, THE- ST (6os West Coast psych pop) Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA "Although virtually nothing is known of Growing Concern, their only album (Mainstream, 1969) is an enjoyable piece of West Coast psychedelic pop” CD $10 SKU:23378

GUN - Reloaded - 1968 Brit legends) PLUS DVD-Label:WET WORLD RECORDS (USA) Solid fourteen track collection of non-LP tracks from this legendary English band (it says so on right on the sticker!), which featured the talents of Adrian and Paul Gurvitz, later of Three Man Army, and so on, and Peter Dunton of the Flies, Please, Neon Pearl, and T2 fame—as well as a logo designed by Roger Dean; this package features BBC recordings made between 1968 and 1970, plus three unreleased studio cuts from an 80's reunion attempt. Good-to-great sound quality throughout, plus eight pages of thorough liner notes with rare pics, thanks to the full cooperation of Paul Gurvitz. DVD contains a German Beat Club performance of the band’s massive hit, ‘Race With The Devil. CD $16 SKU:20190

HOLLINS & STARR - SIDEWALKS TALKING(1970 acid folk)Label:FALL OUT The Chicago-based duo of Chuck Hollins and David Starr only made one album, a treasure trove of strong melodies and dreamy vocal harmonies which originally appeared in 1970 and makes its long-overdue CD debut here. A gorgeously ethereal blend of psychedelic folk and offbeat pop set to instruments including flute, bells and fuzz guitar, it has been sampled by DJ Shadow and is sure to appeal to all fans of overlooked acid folk and popsike. CD $10 SKU:26202

HUMAN ZOO-st (70s garage psych) Label:CICADELIC /lion Along with The Human Expression, The Human Zoo were from the Los Angeles suburbs of Westminster and were signed to Accent Records. Their album, released in 1970 was pressed in limited numbers and has become a rare collectors item. The Human Zoo album is a quirky blend of psychedelic, garage, and funky music. Managed by Jim Foster of The Human Expression and originally called The Circus, the band changed their name to the hipper sounding Human Zoo in 1969. Now for the first time since 1970, here is an exact re-issue of The Human Zoo album, taken from the original master tapes with all album artwork faithfully restored. CD $10 SKU:11893

IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO - Serio 2222 - W 12 PAGE BOOKLET ( Raw-edged heavy rock JIMMY PAGE STYLE ) -Label:LION Raw-edged heavy rock, fronted by Lino Ajello's powerful electric guitars, channeling the dark, jagged energy of Jimmy Page, Adrian Gurvitz, and Jeff Beck.Il Balletto di Bronzo absorbed their influences (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds), but moved from there into an inspired, hard-edged musical space; the band's overwhelming power and great melodies make them irresistible. CD $10 SKU:16072

JARDINE- Look in the Window( lost jewel of late-1960's UK psych)Label:LION Jardine’s album was recorded in three glorious weeks in June 1969, at Sounds Aquarian Studios, a stone’s throw from that justifiably famous fashion hub, Carnaby Street. The sessions were fun. Polydor was supposed to release the album. Musicians dropped in to say "hello" and ended up on the record (uncredited)—among them Peter Frampton, Andrew "Andy" Bown (Herd and Status Quo), and Brian Appleyard (drummer from East of Eden). Singer Mickey Cox had been in Robert Plant’s pre-Led Zeppelin group The Band of Joy—it was Cox, in fact, who became their singer when Plant left the band. But suddenly, thanks to band management problems, the LP was shelved. Keith Law, who had written all of the songs, joined Velvett Fogg for their only album, and Jardine was forgotten. Now, forty years later, you can be among the first to discover the brooding excellence of these tracks, music both strange and sinister, with moments of fragile beauty. There are some very pretty songs here (haunting melodies abound), but there is no escaping the dark side of life (‘Masochists of Strangulation,’ ‘Execution of the Child,’ and monumental dirge ‘Blackbirds of Jardine’, which tells of self-same birds, and the fact that they will “destroy you, and leave you pain, pain, pain”), songs perhaps more akin to the band Comus than to anything else we have encountered from the psychedelic era. There are also heavy guitar solos, churning organ, flute, and flowing sitar, for good measure. A 16-page booklet includes a band history lyrics, and comments on the songs by Keith Law. A lost jewel of late-1960's UK psychedelia, from a short-lived but charismatic band! CD $10 SKU:10134

KENSINGTON MARKET- Avenue Road (60s pop) LAST COPIES! Label:PACEMAKER A staple on the Yorkville Village scene in Toronto during the mid-to-late '60's, Kensington Market were discovered in 1967 by musical entrepreneur Bernie Finkelstein (who would later help The Paupers and Bruce Cockburn, among others). Finkelstein was able to land the band a record deal with Warner Brothers. In 1968 Kensington Market did the soundtrack to the NFB film "The Ernie Game"—a big deal for a Canadian band. That same year they released their debut album, “Avenue Road,” (named after a street that intersects Yorkville Avenue). It was a modest effort, noteworthy for decent pop instincts and solid songwriting. This album tinkles like wind-chimes, refracts light like a sun-catcher in the window, has the charm of a luminous crescent moon candle, glow-in-the dark stars on the bedroom ceiling. Kensington Market were produced by Felix Pappalardi of Mountain fame, who also produced the Cream. Kensington Market were: Gene Martynec (keyboard, guitar, vocals), Keith McKie (rhythm guitar, vocals), Luke Gibson (guitar, vocals), Alex Darou (bass), and Jimmy Watson (drums & percussion). Same personnel both albums. Martynec later showed up as an arranger on Lou Reed's “Berlin” album! A band ripe for rediscovery. CD $10 SKU:19936

KHAZAD DOOM-Cherry Town (60s garage-psych) - Label:HALLUCINATIONS A brilliant album of fantasy Beatles-esque garage psychedelia and organ-driven psych/prog, recorded prior to Khazad Doom's legendary' "Level 6 1/2” album. In 1964, the band who was later to be called Khazad Doom started to dream of ‘making it’ in Bob Davis’ basement in Morton Grove, Illinois. After twenty-nine members and multiple names (The Vibratos, The Laymen), three musicians and a ‘Crow,’ they formally became Khazad Doom and the legend was born. Khazad Doom made a name for themselves during the early 70's with their unique style of progressive rock music, metaphorical lyrics, and stage presence. Their music was driven by pumping bass lines, dynamic Hammond swells, and multi-dimensional guitar work. On top of that, three of the four musicians contributed to beautiful three-part vocal harmonies, and counterpoint. CD $10 SKU:24710

PIANO SLIM -Look At Grandma WatusILabel:CICADELIC THE INCREDIBLE SOUND OF PIANO SLIM, FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!Piano Slim—Willard Burton of Houston, Texas—played with legendary musicians such as T-Bone Walker, Johnny Winter, Johnny Copeland, and Bobby “Blue” Bland; even so, he is often confused with another Piano Slim, Robert T. Smith. While Willard Burtons’ recording career lasted nearly thirty years, this compilation concentrates on his solo outings from 1959 to 1962, including his first two singles, plus a bonanza of previously unreleased masters. These songs range from the Sam Cooke influenced ballad of 'Raise Your Head' to the Little Richard and Fats Domino inspired rocker, 'Lotta Shakin’, Lotta of Jivin', to instrumental ravers such as 'Key Jammer', 'Do It Now', 'Aw Get It', and 'Pat Your Rock', to dance-craze themed songs such as, 'Look At Grandma Watusi!', 'Mister Twister', 'Spinning Top', and 'Ennis Lee'. So take a journey back in time with Piano Slim as your guide, it’s a trip from which you may never want to return. CD $10 SKU:26336

PRETTY THINGS-GET THE PICTURE- digipak-has 4 Label:MADFISH The band’s much-beloved second album, with six bonus tracks and liner notes. "The Pretty Things' second album, "Get the Picture?” (first released December 1965), has not only been remastered from original session tapes so the group sounds like their amps are practically right in your lap, but it's also been expanded to 18 songs with the addition of tracks cut for singles and EP releases from the same sessions. That's enough to recommend it even to casual fans — this is now a record that's just a few notches short of Rolling Stones level in the charisma department, and pretty tough any way you want to look at it. On 'Rainin' in My Heart,' they sound exactly like the Stones from the same era, missing only the little harmonica flourish that might have been added on the break. The liner notes go into the history of the group during this period in delightful detail, and the histories of various songs, most particularly 'L.S.D.,' which, amazingly, was cut as a demo and never redone for release, but just put out the way it was. In their good moments here, the Pretty Things approach Rolling Stones' territory, and even in their off moments, they're flying at the same level as the Kinks' album tracks.” —Bruce Eder, AllMusic The Pretty Things were fundamental in the development of British music. They enjoyed much critical success and were a huge influence on artists as diverse as David Bowie, Aerosmith, The Ramones, Bob Dylan, The Sex Pistols, The White Stripes, Kasabian, The Lightning Seeds and countless more. Their music has been used in feature films including Guy Ritchie's 'RocknRolla', and on TV shows as recent as Britannia II. The band created a rich music catalogue including the classic albums The Pretty Things, S.F. Sorrow & Parachute, and remained a significant artistic and creative force throughout their entire 55+ year career. They have continued to release iconic and influential recordings, right up to the present day, with a new album due for release later this year. They also remained a potent live act, as is shown on 'The Final Bow', highlighting their last electric gig at the O2 which featured special guests including Van Morrison and David Gilmour accompanying Phil and The Pretty Things live on stage. CD $12 SKU:23998

WAPASSOU-ST (70s French Prog) Label:LION Wapassou is one of those hard to classify prog group, not really on the rock side of prog, but it would be a shame not to include it, the same way Art Zoyd or Univers Zero are in the archives. Their music is a mix of classical with meditative (almost hippie) moments and spacey ethereal music. Their line-up is just about as unconventional as there is no drums and bass guitar, concentrating between violin, electric guitars and organs. Sounds intriguing? Well it is. CD $10 SKU:26179

WHITE HOT TIZZIES -Stash (Driving rock/power pop c. 2005)Label:EASTER Driving rock/power pop c. 2005 from this obscure Milwaukee band, featuring local heroes Rob McCuen (drummer for Plasticland on their first — and best — two albums); Paul Wall (the Exotics); and Ron Turner; has plenty of early-Replacements energy and guitar firepower. Well worth a listen. CD $10 SKU:26990

YOON YOUN SUN--Wing of Peace (S Korean 70s female trippy vocals) Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA in some ways, this could be the female counterpart to Lee Jang Hee’s "Meet Me In a Room": first of all, it also features "best production and trip vocal." It’s almost as if these were albums designed one to answer the other, with Yoon Youn Sun’s beautiful, brooding vocals breathing hope where before there was despair; then there are the retro-early 60’s touches that are reminiscent of French ye-ye music of the François Hardy, France Gall type, sultry, yet nurturing a languid innocence; in any case, this album by Yoon Youn Sun was not released in France in the 1960’s, it was released in Korea in 1972 (KLS-64), which makes Yoon Youn Sun a contemporary of Kim Jung Mi, all in all a good reference point; the record has several modes: there are duets with a male singer (all very tasty); the songs that groove the best (tracks five and six) occur when the cheesy farfisa organ gets involved; the second half of the record features more complex arrangements (a few strings find their way into the mix); it’s no surprise that Koreans like Greek music—some of these songs (track three for example) sound as though they could be Neo Kyma tracks from the Popi Asteriadi record previously issued by World Psychedelia, which is, of course, not a bad thing at all; then again, other tracks sound like early Selda material. One world, one music. Full-color discography included. CD $10 SKU:20399

LARD FREE- Unnamed (LP+7")- Orig 1997 cover- 180 gram ltd ed of 500 with bonus 7” Label:REPLICA ** 500 copies ** Never heard before until its release on CD in 1997 (on Spa-lax Records), Unnamed was recorded a year before Lard Free’s first album and shows a band that totally foresaw the Rock In Opposition movement. Aventurous, never afraid to explore unknown musical lands, Lard Free definitely owns its place in the great History of Rock Music.Recorded in 1971/1972, these Lard Free "lost" recordings document an interesting, primitive period of the band and shows Artman and Co. moving freely in different directions : jazz, noise and the most radical musical improvisation. Truly stunning from start to finish, Lard Free’s “lost” album, “Unnamed”, is a truly groundbreaking body of work. It’s both tragic and mind-boggling that it remained unreleased as long as it did. Replica Records’ brand-new reissue of this stunner beautifully reproduces the 1997 cover, and is pressed on 180 gr. vinyl in a limited edition of 500, and also includes a bonus 7”. Not for the faint of heart! LP $15 SKU:25461
