NEW ARRIVALS

AKA- REFLECTION ( 70s heavy blues rock and psych freak-out ) -Label:GRANADILLA MUSIC (GERMANY) AKA's 1970 debut album Do What You Like ( combines earthy, heavily buzzing, and fuzzed-out rock monuments in the vein of classic UK and US bands with a few tunes in the Continental European heavy rock style, with big chorus lines and a bit of a pop thrown in for good measure, plus great melodic ballads and pop tunes in their native Indonesian language. The Indonesian band carried their trademark sound through whole recording career, including Reflection, their fifth album, originally released in 1974 and reissued here for the first time. Different melodies and titles but the same wild crossover of styles, with a change between each and every song. Lush epic ballads, powerful heavy rock, a great beat tune with a flowery feel that drags you straight to the dancehall, and another epic and utterly heavy blues rock and psych freak-out. At the time of its original release, most of the tunes would have seemed retro in the west -- except for the heavy rockers -- but everything here comes well-performed and executed with passion, and the stuff that diverges from the more accessible pop sound will definitely swallow your brain into a gorge of swirling colors. Fans of '60s US west coast dream pop who can stand heavier tunes and devoted music-lovers who go for the classic '60s and early '70s sound will go nuts! CD $16 SKU:16720

FROST AND THE TROOPERS, MAX- SHAPES OF THINGS ( 68 garage psych high-energy rock to acid freak-outs ) -Label:CAPTAIN HIGH RECORDS (AUSTRIA) 1968: garage rock, psychedelic sounds, mind-expanding substances, and wicked, colorful, fantastic movies pointing at a probably strange future or dealing with the then-current dissatisfying political and social situation or with the abuse of drugs. The Vietnam War had reached a preliminary peak in its progress; the atmosphere was full of either love or fury. A great time to create a movie about a future society of young people taking over the reign in the USA; the first step on this film's path to success was a rock band, Max Frost and the Troopers. Not much is known about the musicians who participated in the soundtrack of Wild in the Streets (1968) and released their sole album, Shape of Things to Come, the same year. The band's name is a reference to the film, in which Frost refers to his friends and followers as "troopers." This reissue includes both Shape of Things to Come and the entire soundtrack album for Wild in the Streets. The music ranges from fuzzed-out garage beat via soulful, high-energy rock to acid freak-outs. The compositions show a straight and accessible structure with a decent dance groove typical of the pop music of the day. Some tinges of psychedelia like howling fuzz guitars, darker harmonies, and swirling sitar lines were added for good measure. All 19 songs here are memorable pieces of late 1960s acid pop, and despite the movie-related revolutionary and political statements in the lyrics, all the tunes will drive you into a state of sheer bliss. Recommended for fans of late 1960s acid pop and garage psych in the vein of The Third Bardo, The Seeds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and The Music Machine. CD $16 SKU:16719

SAN UL LIM - THE FIRST CD ( 1977 psych power pop garage ) - Label:GRANADILLA MUSIC (GERMANY) - Reissue of South Korean trio San Ul Lim's 1977 debut album, a throwback to the best psychedelic power pop and garage stuff you could get in the UK and USA ten years before its release.- Gentle garage-psych with a dreamy west coast flair, tons of awesome fuzzed-out guitars, heartwarming vocal melodies, and Korean-language lyrics, all executed by highly skilled musicians.Heavily reminiscent of The Zombies, though San Ul Lim play in a much more direct fashion; other reference points include The Flies (UK, pre-T2) and The Petards (Germany). Highly recommended for fans of proto-garage beat with psychedelic tinges from 1965 to 1967. Gentle garage-psych with a dreamy west coast flair and tons of awesome fuzzed-out guitars... with Korean-language lyrics. Originally released in 1977, South Korean trio San Ul Lim's debut album sounds like the best psychedelic power pop and garage stuff you could get in the UK and USA ten years before its release. One of the most popular acts on the Korean scene, San Ul Lim had exactly this typical 1966 garage sound, with fuzzy axes and some thin but sympathetic Farfisa organs. These compositions were conceived between 1971 and 1975, and, with their heartwarming vocal melodies and gifted musicianship, are heavily reminiscent of The Zombies, though San Ul Lim play in a much more direct fashion. Their music represents a movement from early beat to heavier and darker garage rock, which finally shifted into psychedelic rock. Fans of proto-garage beat with psychedelic tinges from 1965 to 1967 will go wild for this album. Other reference points include The Flies (UK, pre-T2) and The Petards (Germany). A lovely flashback to the golden age of music. CD $16 SKU:16721

Don't Think I've Forgotten- VA : Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll 70s -Label:DUST-TO-DIGITAL On April 17, 1975, Phnom Penh fell to the Khmer Rouge and Cambodian rock and roll was no more. Its star musicians were targeted and killed, record collections were destroyed, clubs were closed, and Western-style music-making, dancing, and clothes were outlawed. The deaths of approximately two million Cambodians and the horrors of the Killing Fields have been well-documented; add to this John Pirozzi's fascinating tale of Cambodia's vibrant pop music scene, beginning in the 1950s and '60s, influenced by France's Johnny Hallyday and Britain's Cliff Richard and the Shadows. The filmmaker has assembled rare archival footage, punctuating it with telling interviews with the few surviving musicians. Cambodian culture has long been synonymous with a love for the arts. Pirozzi's 2014 film Don't Think I've Forgotten pays homage to the country's rock legends who paid for their creativity with their lives. Through the eyes, words, and songs of its popular music stars of the '50s, '60s, and '70s, Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll examines and unravels Cambodia's recent tragic past. This soundtrack to Pirozzi's important film, compiled by the director, is very cinematic in nature. The sequencing and newly-remastered audio transport the listener through the rock and roll history of Cambodia in a similar fashion as Pirozzi's documentary film. It is both entertaining and essential to hear so many tracks that are available outside of Cambodia for the very first time. Includes tracks by The Royal University of Fine Arts, Sinn Sisamouth, Chhoun Malay, Huoy Meas, Baksey Cham Krong, Ros Serey Sothea, Pen Ran, Sieng Vannthy, Va Sovy, Drakkar, Pou Vannary, Yol Aularong, and Cheam Chansovannary. FIRST CHIPS- VA ( 60s fuzz psych w liners and photos ) -Label:STONED CIRCLE (UK) At a time when musical shifts were almost a daily routine in the immediate aftermath of the 1960s, multi-instrumentalist Vyto Beleska decided to trawl through the archives of his own Clay Pigeon studios, based in Chicago's South Side. Assembled here are past recording projects that utilized some of Chicago's finest underground musicians, whose collaborations with Beleska reveal another chapter in the annals of psychedelia and garage. To mark the early work of Beleska and Clay Pigeon Studios, a privately pressed album was issued in 1972 in a quantity of 500 copies. Circulated locally, the Clay Pigeon recordings were sadly never acknowledged on a national or worldwide level. The time has come to give wider recognition to the inspiring and awesome sounds that came from these musicians. This is the first legitimate reissue of this retrospective look at one of Chicago's finest unsung musical innovators whose early recorded legacy boasts more fuzz, feedback, and psychedelic mayhem than any true '60s rock fan could desire. Digitally remastered from the original recording; includes detailed background liners and rare archival photographs. COMP CD $17 SKU:16651

THIN LIZZY - Vagabonds of the Western World (’73 ) 180 gram - Label:FUTURE DAYS RECORDINGS Seismic shifts happened between the previous year's Shades of a Blue Orphanage and 1973's Vagabonds of the Western World. Frontman Phil Lynott was still documenting working class life in the group's native Dublin, and the band still featured guitarist Eric Bell and drummer Brian Downey, even if Bell was soon to leave; the shift was in the feel of the album. Between Jim Fitzpatrick's lurid album cover which depicted the band in space, the new, hot-rod-like Thin Lizzy logo, and Lynott's newly throaty howl, it's possibly the first Thin Lizzy album on which they truly could be described as a hard rock band. Vagabonds presented a swaggering confidence, a band buoyed by the success of semi-accidental smash hit 'Whisky in the Jar,' and carved out a moody, dark sound by borrowing bits from the blues, folk, psych, and Celtic music. Check out 'Slow Blues' for proof, and decide whether Lynott or the guitars win the wail-off that begins the track. 'Whisky in the Jar' had been a bone of contention for the band who felt it didn't represent them. Pushed out due to their presence on package tours with rockers Slade and Suzi Quatro, it seemed to seal their fate, and their Vagabonds single, 'The Rocker,' set out their stall for good. The weirdness and idiosyncrasies of Phil Lynott's early songwriting hadn't been ironed out completely: 'The Hero and the Madman' saw them try their hand at acid-fried cowboy rock -- if such a thing ever existed. After the album, and after Bell's departure due to ill health and disillusionment with the music industry, Thin Lizzy were reinvented once again. Lynott recruited two guitarists and the band left Decca to record Nightlife for Phonogram. Their big hits and glory years -- beginning with 1976's Jailbreak -- were still ahead of them, but, with Vagabonds as a centerpiece, Thin Lizzy's early years left behind a cabinet of curiosities." Pressed on 180-gram vinyl. LP $24 SKU:16582
