LABEL NEWS & BUZZ
We’re loving the new HANDSOME JACK ALBUM, look for a world premiere of their video featuring a song from the new record in PERFORMER MAGAZINElater this week. It’s one of the best videos we’ve seen, REALLY GREAT! The guys are getting those covers autographed and we’ll have a limited STARBURST available for preorder next month. Meanwhile, get their two ALIVE albums here!
This record is probably more fun than the first Black Crowes record—which from an influence/aesthetics standpoint, it oddly evokes—and were it to bear a Harvest Records imprint and a 1970 copyright date, no one would bat an eye. Which must mean it’s really good. – Dave DiMartino / ROLLING STONE
"Between The Lines" is the most obvious example of the Stax influence : its major key guitar and bass groove is straight out of Memphis. But it's "You And Me"'s three-note guitar solo that best captures the band's ethos : keep it simple, keep it raw, make it groove. – Stephen Lawson / The BLUES

LUCK OF EDEN HALL-THE END OF THE LANE/BLOWN TO KINGDOM COME (NEO PSYCH)Label: MEGA DODO Neo-psychedelic rock band The Luck Of Eden Hall has been a fixture on the Chicago music scene since the 1990s. The band's 'The End Of The Lane' pays tribute to the classic psych singles of yore, featuring lush guitars, plenty of echo on the vocals, the warm sound of the mellotron and a rhythm section with an uncanny gift for melodic fills. 'The End Of The Lane' is a song that was inspired by Neil Gaiman's book 'The Ocean At The End Of The Lane'. Mr. Gaiman himself created a drawing for the front cover of this single. Limited to 150 copies on BLACK VINYL. 45 RPM $15 SKU:19119

On the flip 'Anthrododa Lepidoptra' provides a multi-colour floating tapestry of dreampop, inspired by '60s UK freak-beat and Toytown popsike. Goosepimples!! 45 RPM $12 SKU:18745
MYRCHENTS - INDEFINITE INHIBITION (1967 obscure garage)Label:MUSICOL BW / ALL AROUND YOU Possibly from Columbus Ohio but unknown to us beyond that. This is their first 45 from 1967 and is the pearl amongst the swine. All downstroked guitar and snotty vocals, this verges on the inept, but stays on the right side of moronic. Uptempo with jagged guitars, a rudimentary beat is the order of the day, and like all great platters like this, is best served raw. 45 RPM $12 SKU:14411

CEASE AND DESIST-DIY! Cult Classics from the Post-Punk Era SALE Label:OPTIMO MUSIC (UK) IY! Cult Classics from the Post-Punk Era (1978-1982) collects 15 UK 7" singles recorded between 1978 and 1982, compiled by JD Twitch to showcase the DIY spirit of those times. "If Punk was the nuclear detonation, the fallout that came after was where a lot of the most interesting music of that era was made. People who would never have thought to release a record before realised it was something they could do, and the end result was a DIY explosion. I've always loved music that doesn't try to fit in a particular genre, that is anti-canonical and doesn't care what else is going on in music at that time, that takes risks and is full of imagination and ideas that may or may not make any logical sense but that resulted in something unique, that ignores conventions about how a record SHOULD be produced and that was created simply because its creators felt the urge to express themselves and share the results with some other people. This compilation compiles 15 tracks that fulfil all those criteria. None of them had any success, most are (unjustly) obscure but every one of them has inspired me and would be in my ultimate 7" singles box" --JD Twitch. This release has been a real labor of love, involving tracing long-lost artists to far-flung corners of the globe, persuading them that the modern world needs to hear the music they made several decades ago, tracking down masters -- lovingly restoring 7"s in place of lost masters in some cases -- and conceiving an elaborate package with detailed sleeve notes to house the double album. Unfortunately, the original choice of title for this release infringed on the copyright of a series of well-known pop compilations released by a certain major label. They sent a cease and desist letter (hence the title of this edition), and did not accept proposed modifications to the original sleeves, so this edition is released in a more conventional package than was intended. Gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves containing sleeve notes and detailed overviews of each individual track by JD Twitch and an introduction by New York's DIY expert Dan Selzer. Includes tracks by Tesco Bombers, Sara Goes Pop, People in Motion, Nancy Sesay & the Melodaires, The Distributors, Dorothy, Thomas Leer, Visitors, The Murphy Federation, The Cro-Tones, Fatal Microbes, Spunky Onions, The Fakes, and The Prats. COLOGNE CURIOSITIES -The Nuggets of krautrock 72-76 !-Label:FLASHBACK (UK) Collects for the first time on vinyl, all the otherwise unpublished/un-reissued material that originally appeared on the three Unknown Deutschland - The Krautrock Archive CDs released on Virgin in 1996. These CD only releases were originally compiled by Trevor Manwaring (Paratactile, Impetus, Virgin, Harmonia Mundi) from tapes supplied to him by Toby Robinson. Toby, aka The Mad Twiddler, aka Genius P. Orridge, is well-known to krautrock collectors as one of a number of engineers working at Stockhausen's WDR and Dierks Studio in Cologne in the mid-1970s, where he assisted on recordings by many famous kraut bands such as Can,Birth Control, Mythos and Dzyan. The recordings included here were made between 1972 and 1976 using studios in and around Cologne, produced by Toby Robinson for his own amusement. Bands would come in for practice sessions, to record demos, and during slack periods, impromptu jams would happen. Most of these sessions were recorded by Toby, and they feature Toby himself plus a revolving cast of friends and musicians (some of them apparently big kraut names under pseudonym). Including lost-in-time bands/studio projects like Astral Army, Fuerrote, Spirulina and Baal among others, the music here ranges from killer proto-new wave kraut psych to wild space rock, proto-ambient electronic, dark psychedelia and raw kosmische sounds with lots of analog synths/Moog. It was during that time in Cologne, that Toby, along with Fluxus artist Robin Page, gave birth to the mysterious and controversial Pyramid label, for which these tracks were originally made for. 24-bit domain remaster from the original master tapes. Insert with detailed liner notes by Alan Freeman (Ultima Thule, The Crack In The Cosmic Egg (2007)). Also features: Chronos, Neil Andersen and Ten To Zen. RIYL: Pink Floyd, Gila, Cluster, Hawkwind, Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Düül II, Popol Vuh, Cosmic Jokers. COMP LP $22 SKU:18342

EL PASO ROCK - Vol 5 Troubled Streets (60s Texas) Label:NORTON (Norton 372) El Paso sits on the state line between Texas and New Mexico, home of the hallowed Yucca Records, which is now a star in the Norton constellation of able labels. Yucca’s output in the 1950’s and 1960’s was equaled by the number of recordings that sat in the can for fifty years. Available now for the first time ever, from the master tapes, comes the motherlode, selectively scattered throughout the Norton Southwest series called EL PASO ROCK. Featured in this fifth edition is are the moody, broody sounds of Frank Thayer, whose heart-searing sounds mimic the loneliness and danger of desert nights. Southwest sounds deliver a taste of the exotic, a dollop of attitude and a night train loaded with mayhem. Norton’s EL PASO ROCK series is available on LP and CD. Collect them all! COMP LP $13 SKU:15210
EL PASO ROCK - Vol 6 - Label:NORTON Raw rock from the El Paso scene of the early 60s – most of it material produced by local music hound Calvin Boles – a force as important to that scene as Lee Hazlewood was to Phoenix! Boles has a great ear for a sharp guitar line – and really manages to bring the best out of all the players here, giving the tunes an echoey feel that's mighty nice – and which really serves to fan the sparks of genius into a much longer-burning flame! Norton's done a great job with this volume – and have managed to unearth some rare Bobby Fuller tracks, along with gems from contemporaries on the Yucca and Exeter labels. Titles include "Black Out" and "Tickler" by The Sherwoods, "Hot Rod Ford" by DY & The Motivaters, "Lonely" by David Hayes & The Pawns, "Pawn" by The Pawns, "You Hold My Letters" by Bill Taylor & The Sherwoods, "Judy" by The Chancellers, "Dance To The Palisades" by Frank Gonzales & The Palisades, and "You're In Love" and "Say Honey" by Bobby Fulle COMP LP $13 SKU:15231

BIGFOOT - ST (late 60s PSYCH!) PURPLE Label:IT'S A GAS This album is a complete trip that ranges from raw psychedelic acid melting guitar sounds to velvet puffy clouds of pure emotion. The project is very eclectic with layers of guitars and synths on one cut and a classical guitar and banjo on another. Sandy Bull, Arthur Lee and west-coast psychedelia are just a few of Dor Koren's influences but you can hear an original collage of many others in his unique approach to music. LP $22 SKU:18734
BLACK PYRAMID- II(STONER PSYCH) DOUBLE CLEAR/GREENLabel:HEADSPIN Limited edition 200 copies 2x180 gram translucent dark green swirl vinyl, housed in majestic gatefold sleeve. Known for its dynamic sound that blends towering riff cosmos with magnetic psychedelic rock, BLACK PYRAMID has been turning heads in the underground music world since its formation in late 2007; the response to its initial demo and debut 7" was such that the band's name spread even faster than its music. The group's instantly agreeable bang and spectacular live shows has garnered the trio an army of loyal enthusiasts. BLACK PYRAMID's thunderous tone, fire-eating licks, lyrical bent and single-minded devotion to music has enabled the trio to share the stage with a variety of like-minded heavy rock acts - from Electric Wizard to Black Mountain - and have pegged the unit as a "band to watch". Heavier and more atmospheric than the band's debut, Black Pyramid II contains BLACK PYRAMID's most ambitious material to date; a fact especially underlined by the epic, 15 minute long closing track "Into The Dawn." When writing the album, the band drew inspiration from "Lovecraft, Robert E Howard, Edison's second book "Mistress Of Mistresses" and both Norse and Indian mythology", while a big influence as far as source material was Grant Morrison's "The Invisibles", the popular comic book series with a plot that follows (more or less) a single cell of "The Invisible College", a secret organization "battling against physical and psychic oppression using time travel, magic, meditation and violence." LP $24 SKU:18746
BLEU FOREST-ICHIBAN Live At Jimmies(1969 summer of love HENDRIX STYLE)Label:GOLDEN PAVILION The very first recordings by The Bleu Forest took place after the group had played a show at the Hey You Coffeehouse in Ventura, CA. Jimmie Haskell invited the psych/acid-rockers to come to Hollywood and record on the spot at his place. His intention was to capture how the band sounded live, and that is exactly what 'Ichiban' does, thanks to the band members in fine form, two mics, a recording machine, and lots of spontaneity and raw energy with no retakes. It's a time-capsule direct from Jimmie's place in August, 1967. Limited to 500 copies. LP $27 SKU:19491
BO STREET RUNNERS -EXILE ON BO STREET(brilliant 1964-1966 recordings by legendary band) -Label:MUNSTER Collected on 12-inch vinyl for the first time are the brilliant 1964-1966 recordings by British r&b/mod-legends The Bo Street Runners. With a line-up that included legendary musicians s.a. Mick Fleetwood, Mike Patto and Tim Hinkley, the band released a number of singles on Decca, Oak and Columbia Records. Though back in the day the band didn't manage to hit the charts, these 7-inches have become essential releases for later generations of genre addicts. LP $19 SKU:19351
BOBKAT'65-THIS LONELY ROAD ( 60s garage style) -Label:GET HIP Inspired by mid-1960s American "Teenbeat-Kiddie Garage" records, three friends from Asturias in Northern Spain decide to form a band. Even their name is unique, inspired by the Bobkat model guitar manufactured by the Harmony Company in the mid-60s. LP $10 SKU:18900
BONE MAN - III (STONER psych) -Label:PINK TANK RECORDS The fifth album by German psychedelic rockers Bone Man. The way they seamlessly move from psych to stoner to punk and back again is a joy to behold. Limited edition of 350 copies on black vinyl. LP $19 SKU:18671
BRAIN SOUND -An Attempt To Record Coincidence (rare Aussie 1972 Hans Pokoro fave) -Label:NERO’S NEPTUNE (USA) Pictured in all its tantalizing, eye-popping glory in Hans Pokora's 1001 Record Collector Dreams, this hellishly rare Austrian avant-garde LP from 1972 is nothing short of astonishing. There are no instruments, but rather varying configurations of solo, duo and ensemble vocal improvisations, presumably informed by the aforementioned (and nearly impenetrable) code (or “charts”). Although this might be seen as part of an interesting continuum, this unique and prescient music will stun even the most astute followers of outsider art. Describe it, you say? Shape note singing for acidheads, perhaps? From an avant-classical perspective, one might mention late 60's Penderecki as a possible reference point (along with Ligeti, or perhaps even Nono). In improvised music, the Spontaneous Music Ensemble’s larger workshop groups similarly feature masses of vocal sounds; comparisons with Alan Watts’ This Is It are as plausible as they are inevitable. Ultimately, though, nothing will quite prepare you for this LP. In fact, when an original copy landed at Nero’s Neptune headquarters, one notorious ‘outsider’ label chief/collector extraordinaire's peni-meter became so perilously engorged that he nearly burst with envy, casting ridiculous offers of rare wax and unmentionable ‘favors’ our way whilst begging to let him take over. In other words, we strongly recommend purchasing this limited reissue while you can and securing appropriate spiritual condiments for the trip. After all, you CAN be anyone this time around.” High-gloss tip-on sleeves with HQ-180 gram vinyl. LP $17 SKU:19494
BRAINTICKET -CELESTIAL OCEAN (+CD)(1973 Swiss Krautrock legends) Label:LILITH Repress! 1973's brilliant 'Celestial Ocean', by the legendary Swiss krautrock band Brainticket, is a concept album that details an ancient pharoah's journey into the afterlife (substitute the word "journey" for "trip" and you'll get what they were driving at). However, Brainticket were not mere products of their time, they explored some truly compelling musical territory and produced a superlative blanket of sound-featuring a pioneering mix of early synthesizers, flute, zither, sitar, and male / female stream-of-consciousness spoken word vocals-that ebbs and flows in the same general cosmos as classic Gong, going on to influence bands like Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Skinny Puppy, The Legendary Pink Dots, and more! This reissue is fully remastered from the original master tapes. Coming with a CD version of the album. LP $22 SKU:19707

CASE - Blackwood (1971) Color insert includes notes by the band + rare photos • Limited to 500 copies -Label:LION Almost completely unknown and rarely spoken of album of nine original tracks, self-released on the legendary RPC Records label by a group of self-motivated teens from Pennsylvania. Luckily for lovers of musical mayhem, the Case got access to their school music room and a four-track recorder over a Christmas break in 1971. A rock-solid, hard-driving rhythm section lays down the necessary underpinning for moody organ and beautifully-toned guitar. There is sheer joy at play here, a kind of rock 'n' roll exuberance—with ample raw talent and wicked riffing—which shines through on every cut. Terrific raw, primitive album, simultaneously loose and intense, like the Velvet Underground at their best. • Terrific primitive album recorded in 1971 by some very advanced high-schoolers during their Christmas vacation, self-released on the legendary RPC Records label LP $14 SKU:15626

LOOSE - Untamed - 4 songs (Italian punk) Label:ROCKIN HOUSE Italian swagger punks that sound like they like to fight. "Untamed!" is a fitting title, what with the gang-land vox and the psychoactive guitars, and Loose play some seriously muscular sleazepunk here. Of the four tracks, I'm gonna finger "Cool as Fuck" as the highlight, both for it's winning subject matter and it's punchy chorus, but any of 'em ought to get your motor running. 45 RPM $3 SKU:7781

They recorded their first sides for Discos Orfeón in 1959, but the label did not release them until 1962 once rock & roll began to become popular in Mexico. In 1964, they made their first recordings for Discos Peerless, often covering the hits of foreign groups to great success. BROWN ACID- THE SIXTH TRIP -HEAVY ROCK FROM THE UNDERGROUND COMEDOWN-Label:RIDING EASY 018 collection, the sixth installment in this popular series. Six volumes worth of licensed tracks released in just three years: doing the Dark Lord's work isn't an easy job, but somebody's gotta do it, so here is Brown Acid - The Sixth Trip, with more lined up. The heads just can't get enough obscure hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal from the late'60s and '70s! This time around Riding Easy present ten deep cuts from across the continental USA and one from the neighbors up North. This trip kicks off with an outrageous number from Gold out of San Francisco circa 1970. The band used to open their sets with this over-the-top frantic jammer which is absolutely mind-blowing! Delving deeper into the depths, Canadians continue to prove that they could bang heads with the best of 'em! Heat Exchange from Toronto released the rollicking ripper "Inferno" on the Yorkville label way back in 1968 and it's still thumping almost fifty years later. Some more examples of the mind-melting tracks on this platter: Missouri isn't a state that brought us a lot of heavy 45s, but there are a handful of outstanding tracks, one of which is the funk-laced anthem "Give Me Time" by Backwood Memory from Kansas City. Youngstown, Ohio, meanwhile, might have been the Hard Rock Mecca back in the day. Travis is yet another Youngstown group that aimed to get asses out of seats and out in the streets. Truth & Janey had their incredible proto-metal masterpiece 1976 album No Rest For The Wicked; released four years earlier, "Midnight Horseman" was a 45-only track, included here! Those are just some of the fruits of months worth of record digging and detective work included on this latest installment. This is the stuff that makes life worth living, at least until the next Trip. COMP LP $18 SKU:19879

Cut number three comes from Pavinyl, a gent whose ride is a decked-out disco-hearse that, in his words, "puts the fun back into funerals". Vowing to "keep music evil", his club night 'Mockers' has had the British market town of Stroud dancing for a decade. Here Pavinyl shares 18 exotic pearls, from the jungle to the orient, ancientEgypt to Native America. Hold on tight, it's quite a trip! COMP LP $19 SKU:19349

BISCUIT -TIME FOR ANSWERS (60s style psych freakbeat) Label:NO TOMORROW Biscuit is one of those (rare) bands than take their inspiration mainly from 60s sounds (beat, garage, psychedelia, freakbeat, hard-rock, folk-rock, soul, rocknroll) but do not sound like just another 60s band. Their sound is uniquely their own, and trying to compare them to another band is so silly that lazy reviewers come out with comparisons as diverse as Urge Overkill, Soundtracks of Our Lives, the Byrds or The Prisoners in the same line. Which of course are all wrong. What is sure right is that these guys have a good thing going when it comes to combine meaty, solid guitar riffs with beautiful melodies. They know the secret of how to make well-crafted, passionate songs, the kind that grow with every listen. They can rock as fuck one minute and melt your heart the next. You can feel the anger, rage and desperation in their songs, but also the gratefulness, love and tenderness. You can feel the people behind the music. In a phrase, they've got soul. In my book, a truely classic record". LP $17 SKU:19899

BLOODY HOLLIES - Who To Trust SWIRL VINYL Ltd to 200 - Label:ALIVE Ltd to 200 copies Maybe the last pressing of this one. This album is the embodiment of the no frills, off the cuff, blues punk rock that The BLOODY HOLLIES are admired for. They do what they do with skill, perfection, and flat out better than anyone else. "The Bloody Hollies are a bass-less, blues-drenched riff monster fronted by a powerfully hoarse singer-guitarist, and they will turn your ears and limbs to jelly if you let them, which you should." - Pop Matters. "The Bloody Hollies' new record is so dirty, it makes me want to grow a mustache and start wearing v-neck T-shirts. With gritty guitars, stabbing vocal and, oh yes, harmonica, it's like garage rock did a shot of punk and chased it with a glass of blues. - Alternative Press LP $16 SKU:11938

Pressed on 150-gram black vinyl and housed inside a full-color sleeve

Hailing from Youngstown, Ohio, Blue Ash are the great, forgotten power pop band of the early '70s. Actually, "forgotten" may be too strong a word, for any power pop fan worth their salt knows of Blue Ash even if they've never been able to score either of their two LPs.Blue Ash were a rock band first and foremost, placing the sheer rush of sound over hooks, something that a lot of their progeny never did. That's what gives their debut No More No Less…such a punch: they are one of the few groups that truly put some power in their pop. This much is evident by the raucous album-opener "Abracadabra (Have You Seen Her)," a song with all the melodic rush of "Go All the Way" but leaner and meaner. LP $18 SKU:17781

ORANGE VINYL Label:ALIVE Lincoln, NE's favorite garage sons, and their third LP for Alive records.LAST COPIES, tghe other two are out of print. This time the gang went to Costa Mesa, CA, to record "Big Deal. What's He Done Lately?" (the title references a quote from Johnny Ramone about Phil Spector) at The Distillery under the guidance of engineer/producer Mike McHugh (known to produce some of the most heinous, blown-out sounds this side of the galaxy, including Black Lips, Jon Spencer and Andre Williams). The result is considerably more fuzzed than their previous work with Detroit producer Jim Diamond but still pummels. The main characteristic of this album is its heat. Analog from start to finish. Recorded to tape. Mixed to tape. And from tape the wax was cut. This record sounds hot! LP $15 SKU:10948
