AKKOR, Kamuran - ST (Turkish freakout 71-75) -Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS Turkey's recent musical history is littered with bottled blondes who put on a lot of eyeliner, made a few singles & then disappeared. And since the mid-1970s, those twin queens Ajda Pekkan and Sezen Aksu have maintained a semi-rivalry while bulldozing their way over pop charts & sales counters. Piles of Turkish psych & folk reissues have hit the west over the past few years, and yet how many have given the luscious ladies of Anatolia their due? So go beyond Selda, and get your gal power on. It's time to steam up your windows with this foxy arabesque singer who's a real-life Stevie Nicks next-door.Waka waka funk rhythm guitar, sweet little organs, pumping bass, winging & buzzy synths, electric baglama, syrupy disco strings, and Akkor's little swallowed yodels... It's all here on Istanbul Plak singles released from 1971-75.
Whether she's covering European hits that have Turkish lyrics retrofitted, or ghost voicing a musical scene in a high-profile movie, Akkor often sings like outbursts of tears or frenzy are just beyond her words. And seeing how she always played second fiddle to her classier, more famous sister Gönül, maybe Kâmuran just felt like a little drama was in order, mmm? You might have caught a couple of scant cuts on compilations like "Turkish Freakout Vol. 2" or "Istanbul 70", but there's way more to discover, and now you can. CD $14 SKU:21144

CAL - Homegrown (60s/70s influenced psych hard-rock) -Label:OUT-SIDER Totally under the radar US private pressing from 1982. 60s/70s influenced psychedelic hard-rock full of distorted guitar and freaky synths with some mellowed-out folky moments. File next to other psych misfits such like T Kail, D.R. Hooker, Marcus, Michael Angelo…
Cal - also known as “Cal Rock&Roll” - was a band formed in the mid-70s in New York by some veteran musicians from the club scene: Larry Calabrese on guitar & vocals, Andy Barone on bass, Jerry Joly on drums / vocals and Jeffrey Gaer on keyboards. Famous for their powerful live shows – one of their stellar moments was opening for Leslie West & Mountain - , Cal secured a faithful fan base, especially among the biker crowd.
“Homegrown” was released in 1982 in a edition of 2000 copies, most of which were discarded due to pressing faults. Also, the album mastered at lower speed. Soon after, Larry met Todd Rundgren at a recording studio and he expressed interest in the band and some of their songs. Famous record label Sugarhill were also interested in adding Cal to their roster but nothing came of it in the end. So “Homegrown” vanished into obscurity until some original copies were discovered by psych dealers and collectors in the 90s.
* First ever legit reissue
* Insert with detailed liner notes and rare photos
* Remastered sound with corrected pitch / speed. CD $14 SKU:21146
CEM KARACA -Kardaslar 1974 (TURKISH ROCK PIONEER 1960s and 70s) Label:GUERSSEN Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbul’s music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet’s broiling righteousness and also his listeners’ common ground with their elders in Turkey’s history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karaca’s own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then-current project Dervi an. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kelly’s flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric ba lama, and you’re ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem. Remastered sound (sounding much better than the original pressing), insert with detailed liner notes. CD $14 SKU:21147
CHAINO - Eye of the Spectre (50s African percussion genius )-Label:DIONYSUS n the '50s Kirby Allen recorded a stack of albums and 45s with African percussion genius CHAINO. All this stuff is now very collectable amongst Incredibly Strange Music-lovers. An unbelievably eye-catching cover (especially when you know it was originally released in 1957) houses Chaino's most savage percussive outing. "Eye" contains a generous serving of sensual rhythms and gut wrenching screams as recorded at the world famous Gold Star Studios in the late 1950s, with producer Kirby Allan doing his best to make a seduction album that would have couples in a humping frenzy by the end of the first side! CD $3 SKU:19840
DAN MODLIN /DAVE SCOTT -THE TRAIN DON'T STOP HERE ANY MORE (1976 laid back country psych ACID ARCHIVES FAVE) -Label:MANDRAX Laid-back 70s rock, slightly psych, slightly country-rock..not too easy to define, but a great album with good songrwriting and such a good production that makes you think this was a big name rather than an unknown band. Released in 1976 by the 700 West label (yes, same as Zerfas), this hardly turns up in original, and as the Acid Archives book says, its "Very, very good". Never reissued before in any format, now available in limited editions . CD $14 SKU:21125
DRNWYN- Gypsies in the Mist (private press 1978 of U.S. psych duo) Label:UNDERGROUND MASTERS "First time ever reissue of the hard-to-find sole album by U.S. duo, Drnwyn. Wonderful record that has some very cool psychedelic moments (especially the track 'The Madman and the Angel'), and a good number of fabulous folk rock midtempos. There are drums, bass and lots of acoustic guitars in here, but also electric leads, keys, mandolin and multi-part vocals with some female chorus as well. But most important, very well-crafted songs from start to finish. This was a private release back in 1978, and a very recommended album for those into folk-psych and folk-rock." CD $14 SKU:21124
EDIP AKBAYRAM ve DOSTLAR - Singles Overview 1974-1977 (70s Turkish fuzz) Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS Keep one hand on your baglama, bub! B-sides from hard to find 45s that never made onto albums during singer Edip Akbayram's psychedelic period with the awesome Dostlar as backing band.A tiny guy with a great big, easy, open voice, Akbayram glues together disparate arrangements that put ridiculous analog synthesizers up next to mystic poetry that's hundreds of years old. Anatolian melodies are enveloped by western touches, like breakdowns for cosmic whispering, slammin' organ, or wild phasing effects on folk instruments that were never meant to support them.* Remastered sound
* Insert / Booklet with liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records) and photos CD $14 SKU:21143
MAGDALENA -Lanean Sartzen (1981 brilliant blend of prog and folk rock.) Label:S.P.A Sole album by Basque band Magdalena, a brilliant blend of progressive rock and folk rock. PROYECTO A -Proyecto A& B (1974 Spanish Cosmic, acid-psych-soul-funk-prog)-Label:SOMMOR Cosmic, acid-psych-soul-funk-prog extravaganza from Spain, 1971. Proyecto A was the brainchild of the great Frank Dubé from Barcelona. What can we say about him? A truly fascinating character: a pioneer of rock & roll and twist in Spain during the late 50s and early 60s, an accomplished accordion player, a showman, comedian, a Psychoaesthetics master…But he should also be considered as one of the first psychedelic pioneers in Spain due to his groundbreaking work on the Proyecto A album. Proyecto A was released in 1971 housed in an amazing gatefold sleeve depicting all the musicians wearing strange & bizarre psychedelic outfits. The project was shrouded in mystery (Frank used pseudonyms for all the musicians involved) and for many years the Proyecto A album has been plagued with many false rumors and stories. We set the record straight with this, the first ever reissue done in cooperation with Frank Dubé. This reissue also includes the previously unreleased Proyecto B recordings from 1974, which were meant to be the second Proyecto A album. Recorded at EMI studios in Barcelona but never released at the time, this features Frank Dubé backed by famous Spanish prog band Iceberg plus sax / flute player Juan Mena (ex-Máquina and Eddie Lee Mattison Band). CD $14 SKU:21148
ROCKCELONA -LA BRUJA (1978 Spanish hard rock) Label:PRIVATE PRESS Considered by many worldwide collectors as one of the best hard-rock albums ever, Rockcelona's "La Bruja" saw the light in 1978 and sank without trace. The band came from Barcelona and could be seen as one of the early Spanish proto-punk bands along with La Banda Trapera Del Rio. Killer sound with primitive English/Spanish vocals and heavy, and I mean HEAVY fuzz-wah wah assaults from start to finish!! First time ever reissue with remastered sound and original artwork. A must!!! CD $14 SKU:21118
SAWYER, PHIL - CHILDHOOD'S END (70S PSYCH) - Label:GUERRSON A magical discovery from the downunder 70s psychedelic scene. Phil Sawyer's 1971 album "Childhood's end", originally released in Australia on the Sweet Peach label, remains pretty unknown yet to most of collectors around. No justice. This is a wonderful album that will please anyone into psychedelia, rock and folk. Totally electric, great production, great songwriting, warm uneducated voice by Phil himself that gives a slight looser feel to it at times. The album contains some fantastic mid-tempo psychedelic folk-rock ballads, and the song that gives name to the album is an incredible slice of pure psychedelia with lots of tasty psychedelic sound effects. This is a very rare and collectable item in original (Hans Pokora gives 5 discs to it in his books). This first ever reissue is licensed from the original label and the sound was taken from the mastertapes. CD comes in a slipcase. CD $12 SKU:20279
SHAHRAM - ST (Kinks style Iranian pop master) Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS You know how record nerds are. They’ll gladly tell you that a dawdling Moldovian choir of 70 year old grandmothers is the next brick in your psychfunksplosion journey. But Shahram Shabpareh is the real thing. Colorful arrangements of blurting horns, evil bass grooves, cheesy organs & thick strata of overlapping percussion instruments going off like microwave popcorn. As the leader of an Iranian 60s garage band, the Rebels, and later a 70s solo singer, Shabpareh was never happy just tossing a few moves from Abba in front of whatever was on the local charts already. He wrote & recorded hard rock & funky piano riffs that were built bulldozer tough & would’ve stuck out in an American trailer park or a London pub just as easily as they did in Tehran.Not that he wasn’t afraid to put someone else’s idea to good use, as he certainly makes superb use of the Kinks’ chords from ‘You Really Got Me’. It’s more that Shahram’s rock cojones have caused him to make blistering music again & again over the years, with little regard for where it comes from. Here’s a well-deserved compilation of his best tracks, with insert/booklet with liner notes. CD $14 SKU:21149

JANUS- Al maestrale(1978 private press talian hard rock) Label:Extremocidente Created by Mario Ladich, Janus were formed in Rome in 1975 in the right wing political movements circuit and never had an easy life as the Italian musical scene and rock concert organization during the 70's were led by left wing movements. The first name of the band was Janum, that was later corrected in the right form of Janus (the roman god of the beginnings). The group always had frequent changes in its line-up (never mentioned on covers and in various interviews).After a debut single, in late 1976, with the original name Janum, a new line-up released an EP in 1977. Even if he didn't take part in the recording of the EP, guitarist Stefano Recchioni (killed during a political riot in 1978) was briefly in the band in this early period, that saw many different singers in the band. Their only album, the privately released Al maestrale came in late 1978, mixing together the early hard rock influences of the band with a slight folky touch (with good use of flute) and even some punk inspired sounds (like in Manifestazione non autorizzata).Contains insert with pictures and liner notes, postcard.
