BALDRY, JOHN - Good to be Alive (1973 UK blues) Label:PACEMAKER It is hard to believe that one of Baldry's best albums has remained unreleased this long; but here it is on CD for the first time. Probably one of Long John's least known records, particularly in North America. Arguments can be made that this record was one of LJB's best, and it's a personal favorite of John's. Quite a career for Baldry: He sang with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated; he joined the Cyril Davies R&B All Stars with Nicky Hopkins playing piano. They eventually became Steampacket with Baldry and Rod Stewart as male vocalists, Julie Driscoll as the female vocalist and Brian Auger on Hammond organ. After Steampacket broke up in 1966, Baldry formed Bluesology featuring Elton John on keyboards and Elton Dean, later of Soft Machine, and Caleb Quaye on guitar. Baldry's late albums, “Everything Stops for Tea” (WB 46 160 Warner Bros, 1972) (also produced by Stewart and John) and “Good to Be Alive” (GML 1005 Casablanca Records, 1973), were considered artistically strong. CD $10 SKU:19931

Recorded with a renewed line-up, the album sees the band carve out eight songs of raw, back-to-basics rock'n'roll that marries white-knuckle garage-blues, psychedelic repetition and sun-baked alt-country to create "something new with an old soul". CD $15 SKU:23749

CHILLIWACK - All Over You(Canadian 70s pop) LAST COPIES Label:PACEMAKER Chilliwack rose from the ashes of The Collectors: while spending time in California, the Collectors had been signed to a record deal. After a pair of albums and a string of radio singles between 1967 and 1969, and tours with the likes of The Doors and Jefferson Airplane, The Collectors were dead… and up sprung Chilliwack. The band released an eponymous double album set a year later (1971), featuring the classics ‘Lonesome Mary,’ ‘Music For A Quiet Time,’ and the seventeen-minute long ‘Night-Morning.’ To sort out any confusion, fans refer to the first Chilliwack album as "The Mask Album" and this as "The Double Album" as it was originally... guess what? a double album. From the back of the album: "A few words about the music... Our objective in the studio was to get as much life into the music as we could. Side One contains songs we hope are suitable for AM play. "Changing Reels," on Side Two, is a long sectional composition. The lead vocals in the last section are improvisations, and the song was written around then afterwards. "Music For a Quiet Time" was performed by Bill and Claire sitting in an echo chamber for a couple of hours. "Night-Morning" is the result of a studio full of instruments and microphones set up to record any free-form music we might want to play. Ross sat at the organ and started to play sounds with hands, head and elbows. Bill and Claire joined in with piano, flute and vocals, and the piece grew from there. We hope you find something here for you. CD $10 SKU:19932

KENSINGTON MARKET- Avenue Road (60s pop) LAST COPIES! Label:PACEMAKER A staple on the Yorkville Village scene in Toronto during the mid-to-late '60's, Kensington Market were discovered in 1967 by musical entrepreneur Bernie Finkelstein (who would later help The Paupers and Bruce Cockburn, among others). Finkelstein was able to land the band a record deal with Warner Brothers. In 1968 Kensington Market did the soundtrack to the NFB film "The Ernie Game"—a big deal for a Canadian band. That same year they released their debut album, “Avenue Road,” (named after a street that intersects Yorkville Avenue). It was a modest effort, noteworthy for decent pop instincts and solid songwriting. This album tinkles like wind-chimes, refracts light like a sun-catcher in the window, has the charm of a luminous crescent moon candle, glow-in-the dark stars on the bedroom ceiling. Kensington Market were produced by Felix Pappalardi of Mountain fame, who also produced the Cream. Kensington Market were: Gene Martynec (keyboard, guitar, vocals), Keith McKie (rhythm guitar, vocals), Luke Gibson (guitar, vocals), Alex Darou (bass), and Jimmy Watson (drums & percussion). Same personnel both albums. Martynec later showed up as an arranger on Lou Reed's “Berlin” album! A band ripe for rediscovery. CD $10 SKU:19936
MANDALA - Soul Crusade (1966 soul psych) Label:PACEMAKER “Soul Crusade” LP was released in 1968 and happened to be the first and only album by MANDALA. It presented a bunch of original songs with rich, gorgeous and quite heavy arrangements built around solid beat grooves, blistering guitar riffing, and powerful Hammond-organ chords. The vocal duties were taken over by Ray Kenner who had powerful, soulful, and charismatic voice. Stylistically, Mandala were one of those hard rockin’ bands who performed original Psychedelic Art-Rock with strong influences from Soul, Funk, and Rhythm-N-Blues music. IGOR G ALLMUSIC CD $10 SKU:19937
PAUPERS- Ellis Island w bonus tracks (60s Byrds style)Label:PACEMAKER ENTERTAINMENT (Canada) The second album from The Paupers a mix of searing guitar jams, more easygoing psychedelic pop bigger arrangements, even a little bit of a comic take on Byrdsy country rock-- CD $10 SKU:11175
PAUPERS - Magic People (60s Byrds style) Label:PACEMAKER The Paupers, along with the Guess Who, were one of the first Canadian bands to capitalize on the British Invasion. Their early sound was a classy mixture of roots music, blues and folk-rock (think early Byrds or Lovin Spoonful. Great great work by The Paupers essentially a 60s folk rock combo, but one with a really groovy sound! The group come up with loads of great guitar interplay on the session -- janging acoustic and electric together in a style that comes up with some nice hippie and eastern edges -- and which means that even on the vocal tracks, the album's got an instrumental charm that kind of links it to some of the hipper rock/jazz crossover projects on labels like Verve and Impulse at the time. Most tracks do have vocals, in a style that ranges from Sunshine Pop to folksy -- and the whole album's pretty darn great, filled with tracks that include "Let Me Be", "Magic People", "It's Your Mind", "Black Thank You Package", "Simple Deed", and "Tudor Impressions". This edition includes 2 bonus tracks: "Like You, Like Me" and "Sooner Than Soon CD $10 SKU:11174
ROCKADROME - Royal American 20th Century Blues ( rare 60s pop psych) - Label:PACEMAKER Recorded in a time when creativity counted for more than commercial appeal, the album was recorded for the eclectic Sound Canada label. It sold poorly, but was rediscovered as part of the revival in interest in psychedelia; the only problem—copies of the original album were incredibly rare (and incredibly expensive!). The album is a mixture of rock, psych (some of the tracks are definitely Beatles influenced), and a touch of blues. The album opens with 'R.A.T.C.B. Teaser', which is used as a theme throughout the album, with a reprise at the end and the main song later on the disc. The first proper song is 'Very Strange,' a nice taste of psych with some fetching guitar-work, followed by the more bluesy 'Thirteen Miles Down' which includes the requisite blues guitar solo. The title track is split in two and done as a rock version and a psyche/pop version, both of which are very good, and 'There You Go Again' has a Byrdsian chime to it coupled with a Dylan-influenced vocal. 'Inside Out, Inside In' is one of the Beatles-y songs, but there is nothing wrong with that if it is done well, which this is. The intro to 'T.O. Town' has evinced comparisons with the Monkees as it is very similar to 'Last Train To Clarksville', but the song itself is a great garage rocker. 'Ain't It A Shame' is a little too close to goodtime pop for my liking, but put against the high quality of the rest of the album this can be forgiven.Studio owner and executive producer Art Snider (who had discovered and first recorded a young Gordon Lightfoot years earlier) was inspired enough by Rockadrome's first sessions to basically give engineer/producer Ray Lawrence free reign to carry the project in whatever direction it might go. Fortunately, it was an era of experimentation, studio clocks could mostly be ignored, (there was a belief that the best stuff was done after dark) and so Rockadrome was given an after-hours slot. All through that fall and winter, the songs were refined, recorded, tossed and replaced. Contemplated. Even the physical process became a strange routine. The guys would need to phone the studio by 5 pm to check that the evening schedule was open, then scramble into their cars east of Toronto & head down the 401. The results show that the band deserve their reputation. Extensively remastered, this is the first legitimate reissue. CD $10 SKU:12227

DARK -Dark Cross the Ages DBL Label:VOID One of THEE greatest guitar-heavy psych records in the world, “Dark Round the Edges” was originally issued in an edition of around 50 copies, mostly for friends, family, and the odd record company. Its reputation has since blossomed into something resembling a redwood, or perhaps an original Van Gogh. This album is a holy grail for lovers of fuzz-driven hard rock, and has been the most sought-after privately pressed LP on the planet. We bring you a double-vinyl reissue of this classic, an album beloved by heads & cosmic couriers around the world for its great songwriting, terrific instrumental workouts, and mysterious vibe. ZERO TIME IS NOW. What about that second LP? To make things even better, here’s something you didn’t know: the original lineup of Dark performed their 1972 recordings live for the last time on 19 Oct 2011. UNKNOWN ARTIST -The BECK STUDIO ACETATE 1969-Label:SEELIE COURT (UK) Cut in Northampton’s Beck studios circa 1969 and thought to be connected to Axe’s lead guitarist, this band remain completely unknown — only one battered acetate exists which has been held in a private collection for decades. It has track titles but no band name, with all research drawing blanks. Regardless, this is arguably the finest example of blistering underground heavy prog jamming ever graven in acetate or vinyl. And the band are at the top of their game: this is not a dodgy private press, it’s the real mccoy — a band that’s honed a perfect organic sound, with fantastic interplay, male and female vocal leads, and a guitarist completely on fire, possibly Axe’s Anthony Barford (RIP) as theorised by Dark’s Steve Giles… but we can’t be sure. Four long tracks. If you like Uriah Heep, May Blitz, and a touch of Jefferson Airplane, you need this. The final track is a space ballad with the girl on lead vocal; she outclasses Grace Slick and Julie Driscoll. Fact. Ranks with Dark. Valued in excess of £10,000.” Limited to 500x copies. LP $28 SKU:23994
