UGLY THINGS- #39 Brian Jones -Label: Two attention-grabbing cover stories this time... Brian Jones was one of '60s rock's most iconic stars -- and also one of its most maligned and misunderstood. Harvey Kubernik sets the record straight, weaving together interviews with many people who knew or worked with Brian. The Clingers were one of the first all-female rock groups, four beautiful sisters whose story is a gripping saga of teenage drama and determination. We also have an in-depth feature one of the ultimate UK freakbeat groups, The Mickey Finn, and an interview with Michael Des Barres about his rock 'n' roll days with Silverhead. Other interviews include Chris Bailey of The Saints, Tim Warren of Crypt Records, and Aussie rocker Ross Wilson of The Pink Finks and Daddy Cool. Plus stories on the San Pedro garage band The Grapes of Wrath, The Soul Vendors, French Ye-Ye girl Annie Philippe, and folk-rock duo David & Anthony. Cyril Jordan of the Flamin' Groovies revisits 1969-70, and of course there's our comprehensive review sections covering all the latest reissues, in-depth, and rock 'n' roll-related books." RADIO BIRDMAN- Ritualism SAALE - Label:CITADEL January 1996 saw the reformation of Radio Birdman after an 18 year hiatus. The band themselves were as surprised as everyone else by this development. At the time there was no thought of an ongoing future, only a wait and see approach with the focus being solely on a successful completion of the tour. After all, this was the tour that should have taken place way back in 1978 after their well documented break up and they wanted it to be as good as possible with no damage to their mythology. During the pre-tour rehearsal time, there had been discussion as to whether recording live material for strictly archival purposes should be considered but nothing definite agreed upon. When Melbournes Radio Triple R approached the band's management regarding an appearance on their Caught In The Act live music feature, a window of opportunity opened. This was an workable way to obtain quality live material without the headache of organising a fully blown live recording. Although there were no specific plans for a release, things went well and Ritualism became the end result. (jewel case ) CD $10 SKU:12514

BEAT FROM BADSVILLE- Vol.3 More Trash Classics from Lux and Ivy's Vinyl Mountain - Double 10 -Label:STAG-O-LEE (GERMANY) Trash Classics From Lux & Ivys Vinyl Mountain Vol. 3. First time in Gatefoldsleeve! The people who inhabit the parallel universe that is Badsville are in many cases willfully obscure, running under pseudonyms, or just plain difficult to track down - proper no hit wonders. That said, some of Lux and Ivys favourites carved the very cornerstones of rock music. The inventor of shock rock, with stage props and wild screams, Screamin Jay Hawkins needs no introduction and Richard Berry wrote Louie Louie so, without whom, etc. However, the rest of our cast remains in the strange netherworld that combines tragedy and bad career decisions. The population of Badsville welcomes you aboard. Dave Henderson of Mojo-fame again selected 24 songs and gave each side a theme: Lifes A Scream / Crazy Guys, Food, Prison And A Guide To The Female Persuasion / Welcome To The Jungle / Wild And Wilder Boppin Girls. BONEHEAD CRUNCHERS- Vol 3 VA ( Big Boobs Boogie & 13 other deviant slices of Fuzzed-out Proto-Punk Madness from the UK 1970-1975' -Label:BELTER 'Big Boobs Boogie & 13 other deviant slices of Fuzzed-out Proto-Punk Madness from the UK 1970-1975'. For this 3rd volume of Bonehead Crunchers, we visit the UK. There are marked differences with the US insofar as here we touch upon different angles of the Bonehead spectrum including a nod to Junkshop Glam as well as a more targeted approach to Proto Punk. Now it has been said that, compared to the US, groups in the UK were more likely to be influenced by Vaudeville and learned their licks playing the Chicken in the basket/Working Man Club circuit. I even remember reading somewhere (was it Lester Bangs?) that whilst the US had the Count V, the UK had Freddie & The Dreamers!!! Now to redress this fallacy, we bring 14 total killer tracks, including a plethora of unreleased acetates for your enjoyment. None of the tracks are pretty, but they all share a no-holds bar, no prisoners-taken approach. This allows for a certain amount of revisionism: The 70s NEVER HAPPENED! Well they did, but not how you originally thought. So c'mon jump on-board and take this rampant ride with us. Limited to 300 copies. Tracks: Side 1: 1 Stud Leather - Cut Loose 2 Alan Lee Shaw - She Moans 3 Streak - The Whole Truth 4 Slowload - Big Boobs Boogie 5 Mississippi - Mr Union Railway Man 6 Barry Rolfe - Look The Business 7 Sweeny Bean - Rock N Roll Wedding Side 2: 1 Agnes Strange - Give Yourself a Chance 2 Castle Farm - Hot Rod Queen 3 Incredible Hog - Lame 4 Unknown - Let Me 5 Streak - Cadillac Jack 6 Sleaz Band - Midnight Man 7 Clutch - Black Angel. TELLTALE HEARTS - ST Warehouse find - Label:VOXX LAST COPIES of OUT OF PRINT title. (Voxx 036). Back in the days of the mid-80s "garage revival" scene that revolved around the Cavern Club, there was no doubt that the Tell-Tale Hearts led the pack of "paisley underground" bands that were popping up everywhere. They combined primitive and snotty mid-60s garage punk with R&B and blues influences, and had in Ray Brandes a great vocalist. Bill Calhoun played the keys, Eric Bacher was the guitarist, Dave Klowden the powerhouse drummer, and Mike Stax (publisher of the great Ugly Things fanzine) the "bass that ate San Diego." These guys had it all: the "look," the sound, and the carefree attitude. LP $25 SKU:16726

BEST ARIZONA GARAGE BANDS 1967- 1970- VA W 20 page booklet -Label:HDM RECORDS In addition to music that captures a moment in time, the release features a 20 page booklet filled with the story of each of the groups included here along with period photography, show flyers and more. The Arizona music scene during the sixties can easily be likened to its desert surroundings: The monotony of average and sometimes even good bands writing less than good and even average songs. Then one day you hear a band that knocks you out. Those are the kinds of bands that I had the opportunity to discover and produce that suddenly emerged out of garages and other little holes in walls ? wherever they could find a place to converge and create their music. I now have the honor and the privilege to present to you the bands that I think are Arizona's best garage bands from 1967 to 1970.' -- Hadley Murrell. "At an age when most of us were just listening to music, Hadley Murrell got involved. At 14 he started playing drums with The Carnations, and went on to work in radio, as well promoting shows and other live events. Much of what he made went towards studio time to produce the music heard in this collection. Often garage rock is under produced to its detriment. That's not the case here, Murrell recorded at Phoenix's Audio Records, other clients included Dwayne Eddy, Dyke & The Blazers and Waylon Jennings (among many others). And unlike many garage rock sides ? Hadley took his performers into the studio prepared and ready to lay down tracks as hot as the Arizona desert. In addition to music that captures a moment in time, the release features a 20 page booklet filled with the story of each of the groups included here along with period photography, show flyers and more." BEST OF BOMP- VA Pink Vinyl LTD EDITION -Label:BOMP Records Greg Shaw's Bomp label released some of the finest power pop, punk, and New Wave of the 1970s and '80s, but it wasn't until 1978 that Bomp made the move from singles to full albums. THE BEST OF BOMP was the inaugural full-length, a compilation that featured tracks from a dizzying array of Bomp artists, from Iggy Pop to power-poppers 20/20 to Boston garage-rockers DMZ, and many more, painting a vivid picture of the underground music scene of the era. BONEHEAD CRUNCHERS- Vol 5 VA 14 slices of Slimy Colonial Grillfat and Mindless Aussie Boogie Excursions- Label:BELTER Australia... Not to say that Australians are in anyway backwards, but the Neanderthal thudding and basic rawness on show has a high reliance on thug attitude, beer, greasy Freak with a sprinkle of Sharpie. Here the Bonehead angle also features a strong belief in the hook, so don?t be surprised if you find yourself singing along as you bash your head on the sideboard. Think AC/DC with a touch of Easybeats melodicism but on a much more BASIC level. Although some of these sides are from the early 70s, we have also delved into 1977 and sometimes beyond to achieve the perfect blend of catchiness and heaviness. We could have chosen some meaty examples of Bonehead by more well-known purveyors such as Hush, Coloured Balls, Supernaut or Buffalo (although we feature their first single released under the name of Head), but we decided to dig a bit deeper to find titles that weren?t readily available elsewhere. A big word of thanks must go to the guys behind the Wallaby Beat blog for inspiration and for turning us on to many of these sides. TRACKLISTINGS ON SITE COMP LP $34 SKU:15176

PINK FAIRIES- Do It WAREHOUSE FIND- Label:Total Energy ONE COPY ONLY . Place any of the first tracks from this compilation next to anything of the White Panther MC5's Kick Out the Jams and you find the material uniquely mated for message and visceral rock energy. This compendium of live recordings from 1969-1971 includes two versions of "Do It!," covered by Henry Rollins on his first solo album. While these '60s superstars played as part of huge, outdoor festivals, the Pink Fairies denied all pretense and jammed outside, entertaining for free. Twink (ex-Pretty Things), drummer and vocalist for this most idealistic of the era's hard rock acts, wrote liner notes for this album chronicling the hippie philosophy of this time period and its decline on many levels. SANDOVAL, ANDREW - What’s It All About ( LA Pop /Rock ) digipack - Label:AVEBURY Los Angeles pop impresario Andrew Sandoval has been a key player in the resurrection of the Monkees, Love, the Beach Boys, and others, through his reissue production work for Rhino and other record labels. Using mid-•60s icons like the Left Banke, Zombies, Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, late •60s Beach Boys, and early Love as jumping off points, Sandoval fi lls in the blanks with a fully realized sound that brings in harmonium and lots of Hammond organ, but never loses sight of its inherent tunefulness-it•s all about the song CD $5 SKU:4233
SANDY COAST- From the Stereo Workshop ( Rare 60s psych ) - Label:KISMET Having formed in Voorburg, Holland in 1961, Sandy Coast released numerous singles over the ensuing years. CD $15 SKU:15482
SATAN & DECIPLES- Underground - ( 69 cult goofy garage ) - Label:AURORA This cult 1969 release is thought to have been masterminded by hip Latino rockabilly guitarist Freddy Fender. Despite their best efforts to come across as sinister, and the sleeve's claim that the band are “ unbelievable, individual, idealistic," their sole album stands as one of the goofiest garage releases of the period. A considerable rarity, it makes its CD debut here. Background notes included. CD $12 SKU:14269

SCARLET DAZZLE - ST ( Russian psych ) digipack SAALE - Label: Formed: Moscow, Russia ... February 2005, by singer/guitarist Alexey Korolev and bassist Tair Ismailov, who were already the owners of rather chequered music biz CVs. With the addition of Ramil Mubinov, on drums, and Ivan Protasov, on guitar/organ, the band's line-up was complete, adopting the name Scarlet Dazzle at Tair's suggestion. Although starting out as a psychedelic outfit, the band have gradually moved away from their early Pink Floyd-oriented sound into the ocean of classic rock. Alexey and Ivan coming from a blues background while Tair and Ramil from the psychedelic angle, Scarlet Dazzle have an acute grasp of melody, drive and dynamics.
2008 saw them working on their first album, self-titled, which was released in October of the same year, and proved a big hit with critics and fans alike. Ranging from the sheer lyricism of “One Step From The Sea” to the psychedelia of “Pigeon Carpenter” and the bluesy growl of “I Can’t Keep From Crying Sometimes,” it reflects a weird mixture of their backgrounds and influences. These guys certainly have something to say, don’t miss them. CD $5 SKU:9069
SCATRAG BOOSTERS - ST- ( Gories style ) Label:DELTA POP Canadian raunch trio without the bass but with a sound in the vicinity of the Gories, Oblivians and '68 Comeback. Edouard (drums) is also an excellent producer. He's produced (and also plays with) the Del-Gators LP/CD and he also orchestarted the Sympathetic Sounds of Montreal & Quebec compilation on SFTRI. His and Martin's new band's called the Royal Routes and they have their debut single out on Goodbye Boozy. CD $4 SKU:5026
SCHOOL - Reading too Much (perfect Brit pop ) SAALE - Label:ELEFANT Marvellous collection of utterly perfect pop songs. Produced by Dave Wrench (BRITISH SEA POWER, Euros Childs, BAT FOR LASHES, Beth Orton and others), the songs move from the dreaminess of 'What's Just Begun' to tracks with little snips of bitterness like 'It's Not The Same' and the melancholic goodbye that melts into the fade-out of 'Baby Won't You Stay With Me Tonight', finishing with the uplifting 'You Make Me Hear Music'.

SHAKERS, LOS- CONFERENCIA/OTRA VEZ 68/71 Uruguayan Rock/Bossa Nova -Label:CIRCOLO DEL DIS Two lp's on 1 CD. In 1967, "Los Shakers" begin to write what would be considered the "Sergeant Pepper's" by "Los Shakers", "La conferencia secreta del Toto's bar" (Toto's bar secret conference) and in 1968 they finish the arrangements and decide the album concept. The name of the LP is a satire of the American presidents conference that was held in Punta del Este in april 1967, and Toto was the owner of a bar where the Uruguayan musicians met. "La Conferencia" is a complex LP and "Los Shakers" anticipated the fusion of rock with candombe, bossa nova and tango. Subsequently, Hugo and Osvaldo recorded a bossa-jazz LP called "La bossa nova de Hugo y Osvaldo" (Hugo and Osvaldo's bossa-nova), where all of them play the instruments and put an end to the pending contract with the record company, also considered a "must" by bossa-jazz lovers. In 1971, Caio and Peln attempt to take once again the rock style and record an LP called "Otra vez en estudio" (Once again at the studio), inviting for this project three Uruguayan musicians from the "old times" of the 60s, three members of "Los Inocentes" (The Innocents), the twins Hctor and Carlos Capobianco (brothers of Peln) and Rubm Viera (Lorenzo). This LP intends to continue the Shakers' melodic line but without the Fattoruso brothers, and it is a different thing, although it presents some compositions with good harmonies and the album is very well considered by collectors CD $14 SKU:8884

SMITH, PATTY - Jazz Workshop, Boston, January 9th 1976 DBL CD -Label:KLONDIKE RECORDS (UK) Patti Smith is an iconic and celebrated artist whose cultural standing in America remains resolute and heavily influential. Smith, Jay Dee Daugherty, Lenny Kaye, Ivan Kral and Richard Sohl headed out on their first U.S. tour to promote the release of their debut album Horses, released only two months earlier in November 1975. Their legendary appearance at Boston's Jazz Workshop displays the trademark riotous atmosphere of New York's punk ethos with Smith's habitual expletives being hurled around before WBCN could pull the plug on a live broadcast. An anticipating crowd, hungry for danger and provocation from the rising star who at one point comments "I don't know if we're still on air..." Luckily, she was and with continued excesses after their euphoric show closer with Van Morrison's "Gloria," John Cale punctures the low ceiling of the Workshop stage with the neck of his guitar, prompting the end of the show and the end of the live broadcast. Digitally remastered. Includes background liner notes. CD $19 SKU:16295
SMOGTOWN - Domesticviolenceland-Label:DISASTER Records Color vinyl woth one non-CD bonus track. Great 2nd album by OC punk rock wonders. A future classic! “There's been lots of legendary bands to come out of Orange County in the last twenty years. High atop that list sits Smogtown.” - X2RnR. “Smogtown keep the punk-rock (with the dash) flame alive. Some stand out tracks include "Neutron Blond", my favorite track; "Sneaking Out", "Breakdown Shakedown" the title track itself, "Domesticviolenceland" where Chavez sings, "This new development/ We'll pack the robots in/Rows of printed houses/is the goal for them'...." Fucking eerie. Cutting like a modern form of DI in content, Smogtown's music is the after effect of a movie like Suburbia.... If only Penelope Spherris would do a REAL legitimate sequel to Suburbia: 20 years after where we would find out what happened to the original cast lives and how they dealt with "growing up" and how some of them would interact with their children who would listen to bands like Smogtown...just a thought. “ - Blank Generation LP $5 SKU:4842
