Original copies from 1971 of this private press release by this obscure Texas late night psych rock band.Label:FLAT ROCK TAKING PREORDERS THRU OCTOBER 1st, SHIPPING OCTOBER 10th. One of our sources has come across some sealed, mint copies of this very rare LP. We're doing a presale to see how many we will need. Will ship in early October. Deerfield "Nil Desperandum” Flat Rock Records FRS 1: Original copies from 1971 of this private press release by this obscure Texas late night psych rock band. Some acid fuzz guitars, organ, mandolin, autoharp, pedal steel, bass, drums and male vocals, overall, they're more of a rock band, with some psych and roots rock touches. All copies in original shrink, although on some that shrink has come apart, shredded, or opened up. The LP saw scant distribution outside of the Houston area, but is now a solid, sought after collector's item.'Man From Barnaby' has lots of backwards swirling guitar; 'Kitty Is A Lady' has a hint of Buffalo Springfield and 'Family Comfort' goes further down that trail, being an acoustic piece with some nice fuzztone leads added. 'The Great Rio Grande Border Run' is an acoustic-led Texan hoedown-type affair with whoops, yee-hahs and 'rattlesnake' maracas, which can be quite compelling, as it goes. 'Better Way' is a straight rocker, reminiscent of Moby Grape and with a suitably tasty guitar break. On side two, we get 'The Trilogy', which is essentially 3 different tracks run together as one long 12-minute piece. It starts out with some John Cipollina-ish guitar, which leads into a Springfield-ish ballad ('Do You Believe In Words?'), then a vibrant acoustic guitar passage which winds up in a clap-your-hands sing-a-long ('Sing Together'), followed by a mellow, melodic harmony piece called 'Relax (Enjoy Your Friends’). Interesting stuff. "On their 1971 debut, Nil Desperandum, Deerfield occasionally show the vaguest hints of heaviness -- white-lightning guitar runs, for instance -- but mostly follow a decidedly divergent path, one that emphasizes a laid-back charm and textured group harmonies. The album is a smiling, fresh-faced effort, permeated by a good-time communal vibe so full of country goodwill that it melts away any possibility for cynicism. While Nil Desperandum is without question a rock & roll album, roots music is an important formative influence on the record — and not just the normal, blues-based infatuation most of Deerfield's Lone Star peers favored. Its rootsy amalgam strongly recalls the Grateful Dead, and, indeed, there are strong strains of Workingman's Dead and American Beauty on the loping title track, the effervescent 'Kitty Is a Lady,' and 'Me Lovin’ You' that rarely sound like affectations. Sunny, CSNY/America-like harmonies pop up on occasion, and there are fingerprints of Buffalo Springfield all over the songwriting. Many of their contemporaries couldn't shoehorn such overt influences into a personal hybrid, but there's something singularly appealing about Deerfield's music." LP $100 SKU:25551

On this live follow-up, Deerfield truly rock out, though still incorporating some of the roots rock flavor they demonstrated on their studio album. Recorded at Love Street Sound And Light Fantastic in 1972, the same year this was released in an edition of 400x copies. These copies are not in shrink — they are EX/EX originals in resealable poly sleeves. The American Ruse is comprised mainly of Back in the USA studio outtakes with and without vocals, rounded out by “I Believe To My Soul” and the totally out-there ”Black to Comm” from “Dialogue ‘68.” It may not be suitable to throw on during a party, but you can test people’s knowledge of MC5 lyrics with impromptu karaoke sessions. I’m serious: just try to sing along and you will soon have even more respect for Tyner’s vocal prowess as you realize how tightly on a dime he had those lyrics nailed—especially “Teenage Lust.” CD $10 SKU:20235

MC5- Human Being Lawnmower Maddest and Baddestm WAREHOUSE FIND -Label:TOTAL ENERGY Found a few of these kicking around the warehouse from long ago and far away! Okay. After all this razzmatazz, probably the best place to start is with the recent Human Being Lawnmower: The Baddest and Maddest Of MC5 CD, which collects many of the best moments off previous Total Energy releases along with the best sounding live cover version of Ray Charles’ “I Believe To My Soul” ever, a brilliant sounding “flat mix” of the A-2 version of ‘Borderline” and a poignant Sonic Smith acoustic demo of “Over And Over.“ Rounding it all off is J.C. Crawford’s “What Is Zenta?” and well, what more could you ask for? (Besides the tracks they left off Kick Out the Jams, the pre-Landau run-throughs at Elektra of “Human Being Lawnmower,” “Call Me Animal” and “Teenage Lust,” I mean…) ARTHUR MAGAZINE CD $10 SKU:20236

MCCULLY WORKSHOP INC-AGES (S.African 60's psych KINKS,YARDBIRDS, PRETTY THINGS style ) Label:FRESH In the early 70’s, the promise made by the improvisational bands in the late 60’s like Cream, Iron Butterfly, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and many others, had started to bear fruit. It was a time of rock music becoming really heavy and progressive, but also a time of the Singer-Songwriters and Folk Rock. Medieval themes á la Lord Of The Rings and ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ were the order of the day. Keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman had released an instrumental album about the ‘Six Wives Of Henry VIII’, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow had sang about ‘The Man On The Silver Mountain’ and Uriah Heep celebrated ‘The Magician’s Birthday’. When McCully Workshop used to perform live around that time, the set list would include their arrangements of classical pieces like Bach’s ‘Toccata in D Minor’, Grieg’s ‘Hall Of The Mountain King’ and Strauss’ ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ (better known as the theme to ‘2001: A Space Odyssey)’ alongside ‘Every Little Thing’ by The Beatles and ‘The Man From Afghanistan’ by Curtiss Maldoon. Quite an eclectic mix. The “Ages” album (EMI, 1975) was born from this mixture of elements. The album opener, ‘Avenue’ is a bass-driven rock track, which echoes ‘Salisbury’-era Uriah Heep, whilst ‘Carbon Canyon’ is an up-tempo Steve Miller Band-influenced blues boogie with rollicking piano and cool guitar licks from Richard Black, who had been in rock power trio Elephant, with George Wolfaardt (Abstract Truth) and Savvy Grande (Suck). When asked about his favourite song on the ‘Ages’ album, Mike McCully says without hesitation: ‘I Walked Alone’. “This song had very difficult drumming, and I was influenced by Jim Keltner at the time. And the drumming on ‘Guinevere’ features double-tracked triplets... I used to play this with four sticks (a la John Bonham) for audio and visual effect.” Includes seven previously unavailable bonus tracks, updated liner notes and photos. CD $14 SKU:25115

MCCULLY WORKSHOP INC-Best of(S African 60's psych KINKS, YARDBIRDS, PRETTY THINGS style ) Label:FRESH McCully Workshop, arguably South Africa's top psychedelic progressive bands, dominated the airwaves in the 70's with six songs in that nation’s top 10, ('Why Can't It Rain', 'Birds Flying High', 'Sweet Fields Of Green', 'Guinevere') including two number ones ('Buccaneer', 'Chinese Junkman'). Known for always recording and producing their own material they were innovative in the extreme and were a loss to the industry when they disbanded in 1979 (although all members pursued lucrative solo careers). Perhaps the highlight of their career was their run at the "Canterbury Inn" in Rondebosch, Cape Town from 1977 to 1979, during which they showcased all their original hits along with rocking covers of groups like Jethro Tull, Supertramp and many others. In addition to their music, they were almost infamous for their irreverent comedy, ripping off all the celebs and politicians of the time (including Tully's notorious Vorster!). In December 2004 the group was persuaded to get back in the studio where they wrote and recorded 'Reaching For A Dream' due to their affiliation to the Reach for a Dream Foundation, included herein. African 60's psych KINKS, YARDBIRDS,PRETTY THINGS style ) Label:FRESH Excellent debut album (the first of four albums by this group), a real rarity, originally issued on Trutone in South Africa in 1969; a great album with an early Pretty Things vibe. I absolutely don’t understand everyone saying that this record has a heavy Sgt. Pepper influence (for example, The Psychedelic-Music.com website had this to say about the record: "Of all the albums we've heard from South Africa this one scores top! What a beautiful masterpiece. Pepper-influenced underground music with great songs, lovely vocals, strong harmonies, great distorted guitar work."). Even the band say that the “Inc.” album shows a variety of styles and influences, including The Beatles, Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd. “'Sgt Pepper' was very important, as were the pop charts at the time”, recalls Tully. Another big influence, according to Tully, was The Moody Blues 'Threshold Of A Dream' which was released in April 1969. That’s fine and well, but to me, it sounds like psych blended with R&B; it’s loaded with garage punk tunes—great songs, with strong harmonies and super distorted guitar-work; booklet includes liner notes about the album with quotes from the band about this, their stellar debut.

OUR BRILLIANT CAREERS -Cherry Red Rarities 1981-83-Label:CHERRY RED Cherry Red carved out an odd niche for itself apart from the general post-punk flow, thanks largely to eccentric A&R man Mike Always, whose tastes leaned towards melody, Englishness, and the 1960’s. Cherry red became a home for the dashing, debonair whimsy of he Monochrome Set, the mopy bedsit introspection of Eyeless in Gaza, jazzy-folky singer-songwriters Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt (separately and together as Everything But the Girl), and the Television/Velvets descended, plangent splendor of Felt. Although “Pillows and Prayers” is the best-known sampler of the label, its precursor “Perspectives and Distortions” (1981) includes many non-Cherry Red artists, which makes it very interesting; and “Our Brilliant Careers” (2003) scoops up archival arcane. It includes rare tracks by successful Cherry Red artists like Everything But The Girl (plus solo material from both Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt), The Nightingales and The Monochrome Set, plus many more. Most people probably know Five Or Six from their off-key but charming opener 'Portrait' from “Pillows and Prayers”; here we have six like low-key and absorbing tracks from them, most of which have never been on CD: 'Think' and 'Theme' are instrumentals that will surprise a few. There are also three early songs by Ben Watt described modestly by himself as 'dreary and tuneless'. FLUX-ST (1973 monsterpiece King Crimson style) GATEFOLD Label:SEELIE COURT Searing art rock monsterpiece dominated by a relentlessly coruscating lead guitar sonic attack as if played by a demonically possessed John McLaughlin. Flux is ex-Babe Ruth, ex-Motiffe, with lead guitar by John Grimaldi before he joined Argent and worked on their prog masterpiece 'Circus'. This LP is taken from a mono mastertape recorded on a BBC Mobile Unit at a live gig in 1973. A shocked Record Mirror journalist witnessed the concert and described it in a published Record Mirror review as 'a new form of music'. Sound quality is great and this is a band in top form playing exactly what they want, in a zone a bit like King Crimson's 'Red', but with insane guitar leads that bludgeon the listener to death. The vocalist later joined Italian prog rockers Flea On The Honey. Play this with a hangover and you will die in screaming agony. One very short track, and four very long ones.
