BULENT ORTAÇGIL-B-enimle Oynar Misin (1974 Turkish folk)Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA South Korean pressing. Bulent Ortacgil's absolutely phenomenal 1974 debut Benimle Oynar Misin is considered a landmark album in his native Turkey, but after three decades the singer-songwriter remains virtually unknown in the United States. The songs are written and arranged simply and tastefully, with Bulent’s gravelly voice and gorgeous finger-picked guitar in the forefront of most tracks, fronting spare, introspective folk rock arrangements that feauture piano, trumpet, saxophone, and strings. The mood is melancholic, but with a strong underlying sense of hope and joy. Even though we don't understand a word of Turkish, this is one of the most engrossing records we've heard in ages. CIRCUS - ST 180 gram ( 60s dutch ) LTD ED OF 500 - Label:PSEUDONYM Circus had everything to become the first Dutch super band, along the lines of a.o. Cream and Blind Faith. In January 1968 guitarist and composer Frank Nuyens and drummer/lyricist Jay Baar rose from the ashes of Q65. Herman Brood (Cuby + B) would play piano and Henk Smitskamp (Motions) was approached as bassist/singer. Smitskamp however, chose for After Tea and Brood just did not show up. Mark Klein (James Mean) joined as keyboardist, Frank Verhoef became the bassist/singer. With them, Nuyens and Baar made the first recordings. Later they went into the studio with producer Hans van Hemert, for the complex basis of Mother Motha's Sundance. Although the focus was on instrumental pieces, Circus planned to use a different singer for each song. Hans van Hemert did the "guide-vocal" of Voluntary Peacemaker and Wim Bieler put his teeth in Fairy Tales Of Truth, a long drawn out song full of psychedelia. Circus' groundbreaking sound attracted serious interest from Apple Records, the label of The Beatles. But their recording career never went beyond a test pressing of the single Medusa - recently found in the archives of Hitweek. Since Q65 had split up, but was contractually obliged to deliver one more album, a number of Circus songs landed on the last Q65 LP, 'Revival'. Four decades later Circus presents the original rough working versions, different and sometimes longer than what appeared on 'Revival'. His first two albums are now eagerly hunted by collectors, as they featured a unique style of 'Turk-Rock' with stunning baglama solos (this is a kind of three-stringed Turkish guitar)! They were recorded with the help of Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit (possibly adding bass and drums on certain tracks?) at Can's Inner Space studio, so take note all you Can collectors!" (Cosmic Dreams At Play) and from elsewhere: “Magnificent Kraut meets Oriental albums by one of the considered pioneers of the genre. AVE ROCK - ST (70s space psych)Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) ExcellOne of the most mysterious and sought after albums ever recorded by an English artist; Why? because it’s a masterpiece of dark and enigmatic orchestral folk/psych beauty redolent of Billy Nichols, Nick Drake or even er...Peter Sarstedt if you please! But who was Nick Garrie-Hamilton? and why was this 1969 album a France-only release? RevOla is in a position to answer all this. The amazing adventures of the Russian/Scottish Euroboy wandering the hip hotspots of Europe, San Tropez from his parental home in Paris, writing songs with the likes of Francis Lai, having megahits in Spain, recording with Cat Stevens and his band, touring and hanging out with Leonard Cohen—it just goes on, and yes, it is impossibly romantic; but the meat of this all is the album itself: it's equal parts UK baroque-downer pop/folk, and French pop music, a place where Dutronc meets Gainsbourg; bonus tracks include solo acoustic versions of the best tracks from the album, plus Garrie’s rare 1968 psych pop single 'Queen Of Spades’ b/w ‘Close Your Eyes', as well as tracks done for a label which planned to take over the European music business by issuing music only on 8-Track Cartridgesent debut album from one of Argentina’s best groups, which included Daddy Antogna from Orion’s Beethoven; very spacey psychedelic progressive from 1974, featuring the sweet ‘Ausencia’, the moody ‘El absurdo y la melodía’, and the great guitars and organ of ‘Gritos’; the best track might well be the long improvised instrumental ‘Viva Bélgica’; a very good effort, full of shifting rhythms and rich melodies. “Ave Rock were Argentina’s version of a progressive Deep Purple; great guitar driven heavy prog/psych drenched in tons of Hammond organ. Songs are very well developed with some nice mood variations and dynamic arrangements. Although there are some vocals they play a minor role as the album is mostly instrumental. The entire album is pretty trippy and spacey, with tons of guitar, bass, drum and Hammond interplay. In many ways this album reminds me of bands from the Ital-prog genre. Clearly one of the classics of Argentinian rock, and a fantastic record. CD $10 SKU:18952

C.O.B- Spirit of Love(70s hippie)Label:BGO As many of you know, C.O.B. stands for Clive’s Original Band, and as you also might know, “Spirit of Love” was their debut album, originally released in 1971 by CBS. Clive (Clive Palmer) started out as one of the original members of the Incredible String Band. He played on their groundbreaking debut LP, and left the band shortly thereafter. But it was with C.O.B that Palmer made the best music of his career, while teamed up with top flight musicians Ralph McTell and Mickey Bennett. “Spirit of Love” has a hymal, rural English vibe. Palmer’s vocals are calm and soothing; tracks like ‘Music of the Ages’ and ‘Serpent’s Kiss’ are spellbinding, sounding hundreds of years old, and only improving with the passage of time. Many of the songs have exotic instruments (the harmonium, something called a dulcitone); the banjo instrumental ‘Banjoland’ has unexpected ocean wave sound effects. At times, Palmer and company sound completely lost in space—on the excellent ‘Evening Air,’ for instance. It’s this naive charm and willingness to sound different that makes “Spirit of Love” such a great album. Other tracks, such as the beautiful ‘Wade In The Water’ and ‘When He Came Hom’ seem to have biblical references embedded within the lyrics, and a strong gospel influence. C.O.B. hit a pastoral English country folk-psych sound that’s visionary and highly original. CD $10 SKU:19085

OM -ST (1976 Argentine rare prog) Label:FONOCAL Originally only released in 1976—on cassette! OM was one of the bands that established progressive rock in Argentina. Unfortunately the career of OM only lasted about five years, with an intense number of concerts as revealed by the chronicles of the time; and why not, OM were known for the power of their live shows. This CD contains a live and unpublished live bonus track—an eighteen minute suite that lay forgotten for forty years. The legend of this album has transcended the borders of our country. OM has been a major figure in the books of Progressive Rock: some call this album The Holy Grail of Rock." Recordings compared to legendary sets by Crucis, Bubu, Aquelarre and Invisible. As one person who saw OM put it, "I saw them live around 1973/74 - I believe in the Regio - and they blew my head off. OPHIUCHUS-ST (obscure 70s psych blues) Label:LION Ophiucus may be the name of an obscure constellation, but it's also the name of a French band that recorded an exceptional album in 1972 for the Barclay label. All the members of the band had already enjoyed ample success in music before musician/actor Emmanuel Booz brought them together in 1971: Jean-Pierre Pouret was a well-known session-man for Sylvie Vartan; brothers Alain and Bernard Labacci released albums as Tom & Jerry, and supported Jimi Hendrix for a TV appearance; Michel Bonnecarrere had founded the band Zoo (one of Andy Votel from the B-Music label’s favorites), and was one of the composers, arrangers and musicians for that group’s first two albums. Apropos of the period, the band members decided to live together as a small family in Flagy, a small town in France, where they lived a happy life, and wrote the tracks which adorn this reissue. This ambitious album somehow manages to blend grungy psychedelic rock, acoustic blues, and densely orchestrated French pop/psych (in an Ilous & Decuyper vein) into an impressive and cohesive whole. Sandy Spencer, cellist and member of Mormos contributed wonderful playing on ‘Ne cherche plus’ and ‘Inachevée.’ This reissue includes the original album plus eight bonus tracks in English meant to be the basis of an international album that was never issued. A fulsome 28-page booklet includes band history and commentaries on the songs written by Ophiucus, photos, lyrics (French and English), and a contemporary review. Not to be missed! CD $10 SKU:20094

POPI ASTERIADI with LAKIS PAPPAS - Another Sunday Gone-Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA “This is—we feel—quite simply some of the most beautiful music in a folk vein ever recorded; lovely, full of feeling, yet with the yearning and melancholy that usually only old, tired performers like Leonard Cohen can project into their singing... only in this case, it’s a little Greek girl who looks like Jean Seberg and a young Greek boy with guitar who are making this early Sunday morning music! If you like the Bulent album this same label released last year, or Nick Drake, or anything in that general vein, than this will, we think, appeal to you. Evidently, this is a key album in the Greek neo kyma (“new wave”) movement of the late 1960’s, which saw young songwriters take musical themes from the bouzouki music of the hashish bars, and translate them into painful, fragile, innocent poetic musings on everyday life—songs of intense longing, characterized by austere arrangements. In addition to the album, there are seven bonus tracks which appear to be some of Asteriadi’s singles, as well as a track written by famous composer Manos Hadjidakis for a film called Aliki, My Love. Liner notes are all too brief, but they include memories of her early career by Asteriadi, as well as a couple of paragraphs on the neo kyma movement. CD $10 SKU:20400

ROCKIN DEVIL’S , LOS -Grandes Hits Le - Mexican Beatles, Kinks covers! Label:ORFEON MINI LP COVER . Los Rockin Devil's were, throughout the '60s, one of the most successful Mexican rock bands, and we have here a concise yet incredibly diverse greatest hits album culled from the material they recorded for the Orfeon label. Los Rockin Devil's achieved their continued popularity by churning out great Spanish-language covers of international (mostly British and American) hits. Here they try their hand at material from massive names like The Beatles' "Let It Be (Ven a mi)," Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love (Demasiado Amor)," The Kinks' "Victoria," and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Up Around the Bend (El Café de Amor)." The set starts with their cover of The Beeds' obscure garagey folk-pop gem "Run to Her (Corre tras ella)," and also includes Shocking Blue's "Venus," bubblegum-y pop tracks like "Sugar, Sugar (Azúcar azúcar)," The Clique/Tommy James & The Shondells' "Sugar on Sunday (Dulce sería)," "Looky Looky" by Giorgio Moroder, and a cover of R.B. Greaves' soul classic "Take a Letter Maria (Lleva Esta Carta María)." Stylistically disparate to be sure, but the group pulls off these different styles with loads of energy, which makes this a really entertaining collection. CD $10 SKU:19519

SANDY SALISBURY -Everything is For You (UNREL POP GEMS)-Label:HIDDEN VISION RECORDS (USA) Graham “Sandy” Salisbury was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Hawaii. He was a songwriter and musician in the late 1960s, and is best known for his association with Curt Boettcher. He was a member of Boettcher’s groups The Millennium and Sagittarius, as well as an earlier group called The Ballroom, before attempting a solo career of his own (with Boettcher producing) as an artist on Gary Usher’s Together Records label.Everything For You is an album of demos recorded by Salisbury with the intention of passing them on to other artists/. Unfortunately this didn’t happen and the songs contained here save for three tracks (So Close To Heaven, Candy Kisses and Here Comes That Feeling) remained unreleased for many years until they were eventually collected together and released under the title Everything For You in 2004. For anyone interested in great pop music the music of Sandy Salisbury will be an absolute delight with this album being a treasure trove of unreleased gems. CD $8 SKU:19063

SUN ALSO RISES - ST (Superb 70s Brit acid psych folk) Label:LION Superb sought-after 1970 British acid folk rarity from the Village Thing label. The Sun Also Rises is another case of a folk/psych duo (we’re thinking of Emtidi, whose “Saat” album we have also reissued) who virtually disappeared in the flesh, once they had left behind a small but fascinating recorded legacy. The sole Sun Also Rises album has been reissued (legally and illegally) on several occasions, a testament to continuing interest in the music contained therein. Who were they? They were Graham and Anne Hemingway from Cardiff, described everywhere as a mystical, magical hippie female and male folk duo, who played guitars, dulcimer, glockenspiel, vibes, bells, kazoo, percussion—joined throughout by label-mate John Turner (bowed and finger-picked string bass), and Andy Leggett. Their one and only album is very much in the creative style and delivery of the Incredible String Band, with similarities to the work of their contemporaries Dr. Strangely Strange, COB, Comus, Forest and Tir Na Nog, as well as others of the original freak-folk brigade. The results of their efforts were tripped-out, spellbinding, esoteric folk collages—songs of wizards and dragons, dreams and intentions, love, flickering candlelight, the sweet scent of half-remembered summers, death, jasmine, and suicide. Hidden World was mostly recorded at home on a Tascam 238 8-track and features 4 compositions: the title track and the magnificent "Green Sky Night" are 2 pearls of modern West Coast psych rock with Grace Slick-like female lead vocals, wah wah guitar, Country Joe & The Fish type organ patterns and strange synth noises, while the other 2 numbers are purely instrumental and vaguely sound like one of the space jams of the Grateful Dead with Cork Marcheschi of 50 Foot Hose guesting on weird electronic noises. Especially the side-filling "Elastic Reality" is an impressive, long example of avant-garde psychedelics for the next millenium. SUMMER TURNS TO AUTUMN - Ember Rock, Vol. 2 (RARE 60S PSYCH& PROG)-Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE British indie label Ember released a number of rock albums and singles between 1969 and 1972, which today are much sought after by collectors of psychedelic, progressive and folk rock sounds. Many of the best tracks from these are gathered on “Summer Turns To Autumn”. Foremost among the artists compiled here is progressive rock band Blonde On Blonde, represented by tracks from both of their Ember albums. Fantastic Voyage has salvaged two tracks from Blue Beard s album. An early songwriting/production project for Bob Welch, who next surfaced in Fleetwood Mac, the album was only released in Italy, but the single ‘Sly Willy’ was more widely available and is highly prized by collectors of funky rock. Tyrannosaurus Rex-style acoustic hippy duo Knocker Jungle and progressive folk group 9.30 Fly each managed one now highly collectable long player for the label. The remainder of the material ranges from the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Canadians The Dorians and the melodic folk rock of Paddy Maguire, backed by heavy friends Steve Winwood and Jerry Donahue (of Fotheringay), to the soul-rock fusion of Milt Matthews Inc, here interpreting a Blind Faith song, and a previously unissued folk rock rendition of ‘East Virginia’ by Polly Niles. “Summer Turns To Autumn” complement Fantastic Voyage’s existing, highly popular compilations of Ember Beat and Ember Pop, with no duplication of tracks. But apart from the album sleeve that Polydor has released, Van der Gulik made a second design. His four unused iron plate panels now house this CQ Mythology release, a sprawling double-album that stands as a kind of shadow version of the final album.
