Not only does Miles prove himself to be a great interpreter of songs, but with the title track and "Heart's Delight," he demonstrates his ability to write solid material on his own. Complemented by the Memphis Horns, Miles' songs soar and swing as hard as any Stax release, and his voice, underutilized when he played with the Electric Flag and Hendrix, combines the nuance of soul singing with the grit of rock. COTTON, Josie -Everything is Oh Yeah (80s style pop from former BOMP artist) -SAALE Label:KITTEN ROBOT
In 1986, things weren't great for Josie Cotton's career. She'd made a bit of a splash with the single "Johnny, Are You Queer?" and 1982's album Convertible Music, a fun collection of girl group-inspired power pop, but the follow-up, 1984's From the Hip, sank without a trace and she was dropped by her label. She and long-time producer Larson Paine weren't ready to give up, though, and they started recording new tracks as demos and/or a third album for a new label. The sessions attracted musicians like Hunt Sales, Billy Bremner of Rockpile, and Brian Setzer; however, before she could finish the record, Cotton briefly walked away from the music industry and the tapes were left to gather dust.
Fast-forward a few decades, and thanks to a request from a music publisher who was looking for unreleased tracks to send to Stranger Things for possible inclusion in their third season, Cotton hunted down the tapes and rescued them from obscurity. After a little bit of baking and digital magic, Everything Is Oh Yeah was finally released in 2019, and fans of Cotton and the weirdness of the '80s are in for a treat. It's a wonderful time capsule of the era that mashes up genres, delivers surprises, and positions Cotton as a weirder version of Cyndi Lauper with a voice big and versatile enough to match. The songs are weird and very hooky, bopping from space age rockabilly that sounds like Sigue Sigue Sputnik fronted by Wanda Jackson ("Money") to Bangles-y jangle pop ("Boulevard"), epic '80s ballads ("Far Away from the Crowd"), strutting Brill Building pop ("Hand Over Your Heart"), and goofy electro-pop covers (the Beatles' "The Night Before" and Cat Stevens' "Here Comes My Baby"), with lots of the kind of snappy power pop Cotton broke in with (the title track, "If You Really Want Me To"). The unfinished nature of the songs means that some of them are a little sparse, some of them are overloaded with gimmicky '80s sounds, and everything is just a little tiny and weird sounding. While it's possible that a bigger production and more studio polish could have led to some hits -- there are certainly plenty of songs just as hooky and fun as anything on the radio at the time -- it's more likely that if it had been released in 1986, it would still be a lost treasure in 2019. And it truly is a rough gem of an album. Cotton's voice is a thing of wonder that's alternately heartbreakingly sincere and gum-snappingly playful, the songs are endlessly frothy and fun, and the overall joyous spirit can't be ruined by less than perfect production. It's too bad the album was buried for so long, but the fact that it came out at all is well worth celebrating. ~ Tim Sendra LP $22 SKU:25555

They have taken the songs to very different places, changing the electric guitars and distortion for synthesizers, glockenspiels, acoustic guitars, strings, keyboards and above all, vocal harmonies, extracting as much pop as possible from those original punk songs. KILLED BY DEATH- Vol. 1 ( EXCELLENT RARE 70S U.S. PUNK. - Label:REDRUM The first volume of Killed by Death appeared around 1988, the brainchild of (according to legend) a New York-based Swedish record collector who gathered up 15 of his all-time favorite new wave-ish rarities and unleashed them on what was then very much a fledgling punk collectors' market.

Concentrating almost wholly on '80s Americana, but with the odd early import to shake things up, the end result is an eclectic but nevertheless exciting package, its contents ranging from the Slugs, featuring former New York Doll Rick Rivets, to suitably macabre odes to L.A.'s Hillside Strangler by both the Hollywood Squares and the Child Molestors; a live Nuns cut, and a brace of anti-social stomps by the Authorities. There's also some neatly gratuitous nastiness from Britain's Users, a 1977-era punk band that sounds positively old fashioned compared to some of the young blades switching around elsewhere. Neo-Mod act the Carpettes began as a Stones-influenced school band, formed in the small northeast Norman town of Houghton-le-Spring in the mid-1970s, the trio of frontman Neil Thompson, bassist George Maddison, and drummer Kevin Heard shifting to punk before signing to Small Wonder as a Mod revival act. By the time they joined the Beggar's Banquet roster in 1978, Heard was replaced by Tim Wilder (with Simon Smith of the Merton Parkas briefly in the fold). Sophomore album 'Fight Amongst Yourselves' is arguably their best, the appealing material ranging from the socially-relevant power-pop of the title track and the pop-punk of 'The Reason I'm Lonely' to the reggae cadences of 'The Last Lone Ranger'. DEAR MR.TIME-GRANDFATHER (FR) (1971 obscurity Brit psych prog) Label:LONGHAIR Highly sought after album, originally released in February 1971 as Square Records 103 in the UK. The album is an obscure but genuinely impressive example of the British late psychedelic/early progressive rock sound, firmly in the same vein as the likes of the Moody Blues and early King Crimson slightly influenced by Procol Harum, contemporaries the band liked very much. Originally scheduled for December 1970 'Grandfather' was finally released in mid February 1971. Music Business Weekly said the band showed a great deal of originality and the highly influential Melody Maker wrote: "As album conceptions become more ambitious, so standards of judgement become harsher. This one makes it. It's an album to listen to. The ideas incorporated in the lyrics are imaginative. The music is carefully stitched into the fibre of the album. Although a large amount of instruments is used, there's nothing that's superficial. There are Moody Blues influences throughout including the stunning opening track 'Birth' that moves effortlessly into 'Out Of Time' - think 'On The Threshold Of A Dream' period. Another surprise is the periodic use of the "wall of saxes" that King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator and Jonesy used. The album consists of 11 parts - superb psych/prog, with excellent acoustic elements, great strings and flute, competent and pleasant vocal harmonies. 'A Prayer For Her' could easily have commercial success even now (I cannot understand why it didn't happen?), 'Your's Claudia' has interesting sound effects, while 'Years & Fortunes' and 'Grandfather' have strong flavour of medieval pieces, and 'Out Of Time' and 'Your Country Needs You?' are rather hard-edge about them. The album is an excellent addition to the collection of a conservative tuned music love of proto-progressive-psychedelic rock. The opener 'Beautiful Morning' soon became a classic on its own, showing the western influences of the band all along the spirit of the rising sun counterculture. MCKENNA MENDELSON BLUES- ST (bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968) -Label:PACEMAKER Another great album from Canada's legendary Paragon label, a set of super bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968; the band’s album “Stink” was received not just as a great album of electric blues, but as some sort of revelation when it appeared in the second half of 1969. Lead guitarist Mike McKenna spent time ('67-'68) in the Ugly Ducklings, but he had already developed a 'local hero' tag by playing hard electric blues as a member of the legendary Luke and the Apostles. Together, he and Joe Mendelson made arrestingly earthy music, which soon attracted another of Toronto's rock gods of the day, bassist Denny Gerrard from the Paupers, whose legendary talents had served him well on the stage of the Monterey Pop Festival, where his work with the Paupers was (and still is) considered a highlight. The material included on this disc, which was demo material that now the band claim was “bootegged” by the legitimate Paragon label (a little revisionist history, perhaps?), is arguably even more rare and interesting than that on their classic McKenna Mendelson Mainline "Stink" album. Originally released in 1970 by Pink Elephant, the music is a wonderful mixture of druggy folk, spacy guitar and haunting melodies that some sources have considered to be vaguely reminiscent of Love's 'Forever Changes'. They were located in Amsterdam's red light district, which is why they called themselves Oldest Profession(al) Music Company, or in short O.P.M.C.
