O’JAYS- In Philadelphia(70s R&B soul)Label:BIG BREAK The O'Jays spent time on various labels and released successful singles working with H.B. Barnum and also Gamble & Huff, who were working as a production team for Neptune Records. 'The O'Jays in Philadelphia' (1970) was the group’s only studio album to be released on Neptune Records. This album heralded a long run of success and one of the most fruitful partnerships in the history of soul music with The O’Jays becoming the biggest act on Gamble and Huff’s legendary Philadelphia International Records imprint throughout the 70’s. It starts with the amazing ‘One Night Affair,' released as a single in the summer of 1969. The track has an up-tempo propulsive groove backed up with lush strings and horns to compliment the gritty gospel influenced vocal from Eddie Levert as he pleads for a night of passion with no strings attached. The second single was ‘Branded Bad,' a quintessential Gamble/Huff production with some great instrumentation including a crunching organ motif towards the end. ‘Deeper (In Love With You),' the third single, is a swinging soul track in the 60’s style with a demanding ‘walking’ bass line. Single number four, ‘Looky Looky (Look At Me Girl)’ is an energetic track with the group pleading for attention from the fairer sex. OLIVERS - THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS 964-71 U.S. psych w 8 bonus tracks - Label:BREAK A WAY The Olivers from Fort Wayne, Indiana are best known for their highly sought after 1966 picture cover 45 on Phalanx Records titled 'I Saw What You Did' b/w 'Beeker Street'. The single got picked up by RCA Records for nationwide release and is today rated as one of the best and most exciting double sided major label garage 45s of the 1960s. A planned second single and LP release for RCA never happened. 'Complete Recordings, 1964-71' is a 15-track CD presenting the band's 1969 top notch psych album 'Lost Dove Sessions', featuring the nine minute long 'Jessica Ryder', the spooky 'Mushroom', the brooding organ driven 'The End', psychers such as 'Ball Of Fire', heavy rockers such as 'Free' and the trippy never ending 11-minute slashing guitar freakout of 'Social Slavery'. None less than eight bonus cuts are added to the CD including the group's sole double sided 1966 fuzzkiller 45rpm, two rare 1965 single releases by pre-Olivers garage band 'The Serfmen' responsible for one of the most ever snarling '60s punk version of Ronnie Love's 'Chills & Fever' plus three more incredible early Aldrich/Richie penned killer garage originals. The CD closes with a rare 45 recorded by former Olivers members under the name Triad. ONYX (UK) - KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLOURS -DEMOS (1967 psych pop) SAALE~! .Label:WOODEN HILL After relocating to the outskirts of London in the summer of 1967, Cornwall band The Onyx went on to record a clutch of late Sixties singles that are now highly regarded by psychedelic pop fans. A collection of studio demos recorded in late 1967 as they prepared to sign to a major label, Kaleidoscope of Colours features early versions of subsequent single tracks (including So Sad Inside and Youve Gotta Be With Me, the latter with songwriter Guy Fletcher on lead vocals), the bands original recording of subsequent She Trinity B-side Climb That Tree and a host of previously unissued day-glo psychedelic pop offerings, including the extraordinary, heavily phased title song. OUTSIDERS -CQ (1968 Dutch rockers) SAALE! Label:RPM The American writer Richie Unterberger called them “not just the finest Dutch group of the ’60s, but the finest group from a non-English speaking country, period.” Holland’s Outsiders have a posthumous reputation that grows and grows. Their 1968 album CQ was a benchmark, one of the greatest albums of the late ’60s from anywhere. RPM International is proud to issue the legendary CQ on CD outside the Netherlands for the first time. Staggeringly it apparently sold just 500 copies when it was originally released. Our package carries bonus tracks from a professionally recorded1968 concert of CQ material at The Fanstasio, in Amsterdam, their home town, by radio station VPRO. CQ was made by a band with their own identity. Songs like ‘Daddy Died On Saturday' have the intensity of the Velvet Underground’s ‘White Light White Heat;’ 'Prison Song’ is the atmospheric equal of The Doors’ ‘The End’. PAJARO-Pajarito Zaguri y La Murga del Rock & Roll (Founder of Argentine rock, hard hitting acid blues) SAALELabel:FONOCAL Considered one of the founders of the Argentine rock. He joined several pioneering bands of the genre, including The Los Beatniks, Los Náufragos y La Barra de Chocolate. In 1976, Pajarito pulled together a band of hard rockers to make this album, hard-hitting acid blues rock in a Pappo's Blues vein. If you're hip to Pappo's albums, you should grab this one before it goes away. CD $7 SKU:20275

STONE GARDEN -ST (US. 60s HEAVY PSYCH) Label:GEAR FAB For the late 60’s, there wasn’t a much heavier record thanthis amazing slab of US Heavy Psychedelic/Acid Rock!Stone Garden hailed from a state one could assume was among the last touched by the chemical stimulant-inspired revolution in rock music in the '60s. But you wouldn't be able to tell that from Stone Garden. Cobbled together from live and studio recordings made between 1969 and 1971, the reissue collects virtually every available note by the pack of Idaho teens, including both sides of their lone, extremely rare 45 ("Oceans Inside Me"/"Stop My Thinking"). Aside from that single, all the tracks remained unreleased until appearing as a superbly packaged 1998 Rockadelic LP, reproduced in its entirety on this Gear Fab CD. So is it worth all the archival fuss? Mostly, yes, it really is. Stone Garden is an always blistering and often thrilling racket that splits the difference between the plundering depths of hard rock and the mind-excursion highs of psychedelia (or, more precisely, acid rock), carving out a nifty Western patch of its own. A heady trick for a group of boys from the potato state in the year of Woodstock, and, if dated in minor ways, still body-rattling music decades after the fact. There is some dense riffage (the re-recorded version of "Oceans," "It's a Beautiful Day," an awesome "Woodstick") that comes as close to proto-heavy metal shredding as anything else recorded in or around 1969 (that includes Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, and Blue Cheer), and the band had both an affinity and knack for scintillating, dual-guitar electric blues ("Stop My Thinking"), although the album's sole outright misstep, "SF Policeman Blues," apes early Grateful Dead a little too closely. But there is plenty of consciousness-expanding, detail-intriguing, and ominous melodic shifts, nifty but queasy coats of echo, Zappa-esque avant-garde effects ("Bastard"), and surprisingly mature and hip lyrics -- even if the performances are not exactly nuanced. Subtle Stone Garden was not. But the music can cut you off at the knees and knock the wind out of you, which is pretty impressive stuff. CD $10 SKU:18837

THE FAMILY OF APOSTOLIC(60s enchanting, mind-expanding relic)Label:LITA Apostolic was many things: a label, a collective, a state of mind even. But before all of that, it was a recording studio set up by New Yorker John Townley.
As a member of the Magicians, (you recognize that name from the Nuggets albums), Townley worked in some of the finest studios in the USA, but he felt he was on a conveyor belt. “You had to do the creation ahead of time, which is not my idea of a good time,” he says now. "You had all this stuff to play with, and you weren’t allowed to play with it.” When Townley came into an $85,000 inheritance he immediately invested in a loft building on 10th Street, New York, against the advice of, well, “everybody”. But there were fellow believers. Friends Matt Hoffman and Michael and Danny Weiss, heirs to the Weiss jewelry fortune, helped assemble the studio, which was built to bleeding-edge specifications and even had a 12-track recorder.Soon, it was attracting likeminded souls such as Frank Zappa, whose Mothers Of Invention recorded several landmark LPs at Apostolic. But the greatest example of the output of this artistic community is the sprawling double LP The Family of Apostolic. A utopian album inspired by global cultures ranging from Pakistani folk songs to Scottish traditional music and Chinese opera, it was made by a cast of 19, bonded by a desire to create “primitive performance art” from surrealist happenings. "The idea of Apostolic was that the whole operation was a family,” says Townley. “Anybody could do anything if they participated.Despite the possibilities opened up by the studio and the chance to treat the desk as an instrument, The Family Of Apostolic is nonetheless a folk record at heart, and sounds downright spare in places. The experimentation was there in subtle ways, per Townley’s desire for each song to be “like just a natural happening. We were trying to get a very close, upfront, live feeling.” Released under a deal with Vanguard, the rambling album proved too difficult to market. Singles were released under different artist names, serving only to confuse the public more. Soon the studio was heading down the tubes, thanks in part to Jimi Hendrix’s multi-track studio Electric Lady opening two blocks away. And before long, the Apostolic dream was over.The album remains a curate’s egg, but one filled with delights. Opening track Redeemer asks, "O say, are you a true believer?” By the time you’ve listened to our deluxe reissue, you will be.
