THE NEXT BIG THING!
Hope you guys are getting ready for a big holiday weekend! We’re taking Monday off but we’ll be here until Thursday for you guys.
Our latest releases are getting absolute raves from the press, but of course the bands can’t tour and most of the record stores are closed, so they depend on YOU! Here are some of the latest reviews:
BOBBY LEE’s PROCLAIMED TO BE THE NEXT BIG THING! Read the rave on the Bobby Lee’s here, a really nice story on the band.
“Oddsmakers could never correctly assess it. Fortune tellers could never predict it. And even the shrewdest talent scout this side of Col. Tom Parker could never pinpoint with any historical accuracy exactly where, when, or how tomorrow’s Next Big Thing would be arriving in the music world. Rock stars — however carefully cultivated they might be — just seem to fall to Earth in their own time, burst onto the scene albeit unexpectedly, and sometimes disappear in an equally-surprising puff of smoke. Only in retrospect, by retracing their carefully choreographed career steps, is it possible to clearly chart the trajectories of such luminaries, from Elvis Presley to David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, and even visionary trailblazers like Andrew W.K., R.E.M., and The Jesus and Mary Chain.” (And the Bobby Lee’s!) READ MORE → AND GET THEIR RECORD HERE.
And if you haven’t already gotten the new PAUL COLLINS, you should! Limited edition blue vinyl is going fast.
“A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it slice of power-pop goodness that’s all skinny ties and fat hooks. 45 years into his career, Collins has mastered this kind of song, and there seems to be no shortage of them inside of him.” – MAGNET
And the reviews are coming in for the new DIRTY STREETS album too:
"Rough and Tumble": A smashing live set. These Memphis soul/blooze bruisers flow nimbly through crushing, Motown-inspired dancefloor burners and blistering f**k-on-the-floor barroom blues howlers with equally devastating precision. – Sleazegrinder / CLASSIC ROCK
Also just in, the very popular Los Shakers albums have arrived, see the list. And of course the usual Tuesday restocks, reminders and discounts.

I DON’T FIT IN -My WIld Ride thru the Punk and Powerpop Trenches - By Paul Collins Label:HOZAK After two long years of painstaking research and development, we present to you, the first major memoir covering the birth of DIY Power Pop, from Paul Collins. From it’s initial conception as a film script to it’s re-birth as a full-bore rock & roll revelation, this is one crazy story from beginning to end. Outlining the first National DIY cross-country tour by an unsigned band in 1977, and by default, creating the pathway for the true indie underground network of the 80s to take as a template. It wasn’t even a second thought for Collins and bandmates Peter Case and Jack Lee, but the underground rock & roll world is a better place for it. But until now, the real details of the origins of The Nerves, Breakaways, and The BEAT have eluded most of us, so with this tome of incredible survival stories from the trenches, Paul Collins opens up and reveals all the drama, victories and defeats with such an impassioned voice, you won’t be able to put it down. The coverage of the pre-Punk 1975 landscape of both LA and San Francisco is unmatched, and your mind will be BLOWN.Featuring TONS of previously unseen photos, flyers and ephemera from the earliest days of The Nerves lineup as a FOUR PIECE, to the legal documents challenging The Paul Collins BEAT vs The English Beat, to the ill-fated Nerves reunion, and so much in between. Truly a smorgasbord of juicy details and revelatory discoveries await, balancing the failures with triumphs from the mid 1970s to the mid 2000s, when Paul returned to the touring circuit. From literally renting out a space for the first documented Punk show in Los Angeles in March of 1977, to The Screamers story about buying a copy of The Nerves EP at the Capitol Records swap meet and smashing it to pieces- it’s all in there, along with so many more soon-to-be-legendary tales from the real trenches you don’t usually rise out from unscathed…. 227 PAGES PAPERBACK BOOKS & MAGS $25 SKU:23682

7SHADES-BURSTING(prog/punk/pop/psych pranksters)Label:SNAFU RECORDINGS The much anticipated second album from prog/punk/pop/psych pranksters 7shades. Crammed to the gills with all manner of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic deviance, this is a band that is clearly not afraid to venture into the lesser-travelled realms of maximalism. Self-professed devotees of the work of Tim Smith and Cardiacs, that inherited DNA is still in strong evidence throughout 'Bursting', but as a whole the album seems to be striking out in a myriad of other directions. Influences from Gong, King Crimson and Mike Patton are evident, for example, but it is far from being any kind of mere prog copycat affair CD $15 SKU:22630

DUNGEN- TIO BITAR ( Swedish psych) Label: SUBLIMINAL SOUNDS Over the past two years, the profile of Swedish psychedelic rockers Dungen has grown at an alarming rate, from a cult studio project into a worldwide musical phenomenon. And on Tio Bitar, we're hearing the end results of an outpouring of success and support - one which has, for once, inspired the creative processes at hand to make something wholly new and original, yet remaining within the same sphere of emotions that fostered Dungen's three previous albums. Gustav Ejstes, Dungen's founder and principal member, made Tio Bitar (translated, "Ten Pieces") - a bracing display of psychedelic rock, presented with a bright, avid confidence largely by himself, with the assistance of guitarist Reine Fiske. Gustav wrote the songs, and played all of the instruments on his own, with Reine on many lead guitar and bass parts; his style of play puts him well within the top ranks of modern guitar heroes past and present. First pressing is a limited edition in a silver foil slipcase of 8,000 copies CD $10 SKU:23673

HONEYRIDER- All Systems Go! BEach Boys/Byrds inspired) -Label:DIONYSUS /ORANGE SKY Honeyrider is a group originally from San Diego and they (at least on this album) dabble in a surf rock sound reminiscent of early Beach Boys. I wish I could drool all over myself about this album like every other review I spied about it, but to be honest listening to the 12 original tracks here in one sitting was just too taxing to keep my interest. There were moments on the album where I thought things were going to pick up, but it never happened. All the sounds washed together in a generic melodic surf rock homogenization. And if you go back and listen to those first couple of Beach Boys albums, you'll find the same thing happening. Cool harmonies, a good riff here and there, but nothing that demands you sit there for an entire album. Especially when the Boys were dumping goofball joke tracks left and right on their early LPs. Honeyrider doesn't hand that kind of junk out, but they do stick themselves into a niche that really wasn't that expansive in the first place.Granted, sometimes these songs sound like the Byrds dropped in for a time, but then that makes the band sound like nothing more than a weaker clone of Teenage Fanclub's more recent stuff. Then there's the other sort of songs on here that other folks liked to label as "Jesus and Mary Chain inspired". I suppose there are hints of that lurking about the likes of "Superstar Love Machine", but the cheap Byrds/Fanclub thing is what creeps out most of the time. POP MATTERS CD $5 SKU:23675
JEREMY DORMOUSE - The Toad Recordings (Legendary Canadian hippie psych rarity from 1967-68 w liners & original cover art )-Label:VOID/HALLUCINATIONS (USA) Legendary Canadian hippie psych rarity from 1967-68. One of the hardest to find album collectibles there is. This recording also features a very young Lynda Squires (Reign Ghost) and many other Canadian notables of the day. Original cover art is here as well as liner notes. The master came from the band and sounds great, with male/female interplay throughout. Standout cut is 'Believe Me', a folk gem. There’s also a haunting cover of Leonard Cohen’s 'Suzanne' that is right there as well. This project is also related to the 'Rejects' LP, another lost Canadian rarity. CD $10 SKU:15699

TERRY & THE PIRATES- Too Close For Comfort (70s )-Label:ACADIA Twenty nine years after the release of the original Too Close For Comfort comes the third issue of this priceless and timeless music from San Francisco's own Terry & The Pirates.” Another view: “Probably only remembered today as one of the many bands graced by the guitarwork of John Cipollina following his departure from Quicksilver Messenger Service, and as a footnote in the career of Nicky Hopkins, Terry and the Pirates deserve much greater recognition. Although Cipollina’s feral guitar is undoubtedly essential to their charms, the work of Terry Dolan himself should not be underestimated. His voice is an acquired taste, a strange mixture of David Crosby and Captain Beefheart, but as such, it’s impressively distinctive. Meanwhile, his songwriting mines that same rich vein of American folk which yielded ‘Pride Of Man’ (so memorably covered by Quicksilver). The best songs on this collection of various live and studio recordings are certainly Dolan’s own. Whilst a version of Jackie Wilson’s ‘Higher & Higher’ might be entertainingly audacious, covers of ‘Mystery Train’ and ‘Don’t Do It’ aren’t going to make anybody forget those by The Band, despite some impressive sparring between Cipollina and second guitarist Greg Douglass on the latter. In this context, tracks like ‘Inside and Out’ and ‘Inlaws and Outlaws’ distinguish themselves as fine examples of original Californian rock n’ roll. Even if none of this is especially ground-breaking or epoch-defining music, it’s played with spirit and any fans of West Coast music who might have easily overlooked it should be sure to rectify their mistake. CD $10 SKU:16373
THEE FOURGIVEN - It Aint Pretty Down Here (Nuggets inspired psych) LAST COPIES Label:DIONYSUS This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer filesCalifornia's Thee Fourgiven were an important part of the NUGGETS-inspired third wave of American psychedelia. A little more than 20 years after their debut album was released, Dionysis Records re-released a deluxe CD version, with the whole album plus selected tracks from the band's next two albums and a video of the song "Anything." CD $8 SKU:23679
TONE FLOAT - Musik Von Tone Float (Texas psych/Krautrock inspired)-Label:TIMOTHYS BRAIN A sonic portfolio of the Texas psych/Krautrock inspired scene it represents, but also an homage to the heavily lysergic first Kraftwerk album under the name Organisation; as the rave review in Alternative Press rightly pointed out, "words cannot do justice to the utterly outlandish studio experiments Tone Float achieve here." And quite rightly, AP are quick to praise the "sonic sorcery" that pervades these cosmic corridor wanderings, this "sublimely demented carnival music." CD $6 SKU:19940
WILDE FLOWERS- ST (60s Brit pop) booklet is packed with photos, cuttings and extensive sleeve notes - Label:VOICEPRINT Booklet is packed with photos, cuttings and extensive sleeve notes from the band members. It is simplistic to merely say that The Wilde Flowers were a popular music group based in the vicinity of Canterbury, England. Although the band name itself may not ring any bells for too many people (they never released any records during the band’s lifetime, from 1964-1967), it was a pillar of the legendary Canterbury scene of the mid-to-late sixties. The Wilde Flowers have assumed an almost mythical status simply because of the musicians that passed through them. Band members included, at various times, Hugh Hopper (bass), Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Kevin Ayers (vocals) (all soon to form the Soft Machine), as well as the basis of influential Canterbury band, Caravan: Richard Sinclair (rhythm guitar, vocals), Pye Hastings (guitar, vocals), David Sinclair (keyboards), Richard Coughlan (drums) and Brian Hopper (lead guitar, alto saxophone, vocals). This CD is the very first commercially available record of the Wilde Flowers sessions. A number of tracks on this disc were recorded at a session at Regent Sound Studios on the 6 August 1969, though by this time, the careers of Soft Machine and Caravan were already underway; these tracks are of interest as they feature tracks recorded by Wyatt, Hugh Hopper and Pye Hastings: ‘Impotence’ (Hopper/Wyatt), ‘She Loves To Hurt ‘(Hopper), and ‘Memories’ (Hopper). A fourth track, ‘The Big Show’ (Brian Hopper), also sees Brian Hopper joining in. Thus one of progressive rock's most important bands came to an end with the formation of the Canterbury scene's most popular groups, Soft Machine and Caravan. Not all the members that passed through the ranks of The Wilde Flowers ended up in these two bands. Brian Hopper also formed the short-lived band Zobe, some of whose recordings also appear on this disc. CD $8 SKU:14884
PEBBLES - Vol 1 (RARE 60s GARAGE PSYCH!) Label:AIP PEBBLES VOL. 1 is now a legitimate anthology of rare and vintage garage rock singles from the style's 1960s heyday. The point of the PEBBLES compilations has always been that they take it as given that the listener is familiar with the best-known works in the style, such as the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction." So these tracks are filled with the more obscure and often downright unhinged, like the Elastik Band's "Spazz," one of the most incoherent and bizarre singles ever released by a major label, or the Outcasts' apocalyptic study of disaffection, "I'm In Pittsburgh (And It's Raining)." This makes PEBBLES VOL. 1 an excellent second step into the garage rock underground. Charity Stafford COMP CD $10 SKU:23680
