HIGHS IN THE MID 60’s - Vol 2 LOS ANGELES LAST COPIES CRUNCHED CORNER! DISCOUNT --Label:AIP Turns out every jacket left at the pressing plant has a slight corner bend, sorry! But these will go out of print when these are gone.
AIP’s second volume in the Highs series continues their exploration of the mid-60s Los Angeles garage rock scene, heavily influenced by the happenings on the Sunset Strip (including both the riots and the folk-rock sounds of The Byrds). The one-two of “Tell Us Dylan” and “He’s Not There Anymore” are among my favorite garage-pop songs from throughout the entirety of the Pebbles/Highs universe. The Tangents take on “Hey Joe” is a worthy competitor to the Leaves’ hit, the W.C. Fields Memorial Electric String Band’s version of “Stepping Stone” adds a nice helping of garage distortion to the (later) Monkees classic, and the ferocious organ-driven “Back Seat ’38 Dodge” isn’t your father’s hot rod song. HIGHS IN THE MID 60’s - Vol 3 L.A 67 - ( rare 60s ) LAST COPIES Label:AIP Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 3 (subtitled LA '67 / Mondo Hollywood) is a compilation album in the Highs in the Mid-Sixties series, featuring recordings that were released in Los Angeles. (Despite the subtitle, not all of these records were originally released in 1967). The subtitle is seemingly taken from Mondo Cane, an influential 1962 documentary film. Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 1, Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 2, and Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 20 also showcase music from Los Angeles; while two of the later CDs in the Pebbles series, Pebbles, Volume 8 and Pebbles, Volume 9 feature bands from throughout Southern California. The flip side of "Every Night" by the Human Expression, "Love at Psychedelic Velocity" is better known and appeared several years earlier on the Pebbles, Volume 10 LP. The Grains of Sand (featured on the original Pebbles album), the Lyrics, and Limey & the Yanks also had tracks on Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 1. The Kim Fowley track is one of his many pseudo-documentary explorations of part of the L.A. scene. The song by the Flower Children, which complains about miniskirts, shows that nearly every possible topic has been covered in one pop song or another. COMP LP $14 SKU:7976

WILDE KNIGHTS - Beaver Patrol - UNSEALED BUT MINT 2 copies only Label:VOXX (Voxx ) This is a slice of true Nortwest Rock history, with material from a whole series of bands which reached their peak with the frat-tastic original version of "Just Like Me" and the simply astonishing "Beaver Patrol." Roger Huycke, Rich Brown and Dean Adair Adair all originated from Seattle where they had played in The Caravans, The Fury's and The Pipers IV. They headed for L.A. when founder member Ray Kennedy was drafted. Adding Rick Dey who joined from The Vejtables, lineup 'A' recorded the above two 45s. Paul Revere apparently paid Rick Dey around $5,000 for Just Like Me in 1965 and it became The Raiders' first big hit. WILSON, CHRIS, and the SNEETCHES- ST Flamin Groovies related power pop ) - Label:MARILYN Wilson, who was the George Harrison to Cyril Jordan's Lennon/McCartney during the Groovies' most British Invasion-inspired phase, is completely in charge here; along with three spirited live renditions of Flamin Groovies classics, "Between the Lines," "I'll Cry Alone," and, interestingly, "Slow Death" (which was written and recorded by the Roy Loney incarnation of the band before Wilson even joined), the album includes full-band remakes of songs that had appeared on Wilson's 1991 acoustic solo album Random Centuries, including an appealing, Byrds-like rendition of the winsome "If Wishes Were Horses." In true Groovies tradition, a faithful cover of a '60s classic, "Goin' Back" (a Gerry Goffin and Carole King gem that the Byrds themselves, among others, had recorded) rounds out the selection. Wilson is in fine voice, and the Sneetches, as always, sound great, but the arrangements tend to wander a bit too much; although the album is a '60s-vintage hair, over 30 minutes long, only seven songs fill that space, with only two under the all-important four-minute mark. Still, this marks the first time everything's been available in this fidelity in the U.S., bolstered by the inclusion of a lengthy interview with lead singer Chris Gerniottis in the liner notes. It takes its place as one of the very best single-artist '60s garage reissues, the songwriting and musicianship at a far higher level than most '60s garage bands could boast, with just as much insouciant youthful energy. From the punk of "Bad Girl" and the mind-blowing fuzz guitar of "Face to Face" to the Beatlesque pop of "Please," the folk-rock/pop of "Mirror of Yesterday," and the San Francisco-like psychedelia of their final releases (at times even sounding like early Moby Grape), it's all good-to-great stuff.
