COLOURS, THE - OUT OF TIME ( 70’s New Wave ) -Label:GTA Records Crewe, England early 1977 - Andy and Rene form TV Eye and along with Mick Taylor, Andy (Bucko) Buckley and Steve Palmer they churn out Stooges, Ramones and Velvet Underground numbers to anyone who will listen at local venues, occasionally weathering verbal and even physical threats at a debut gig in Manchester. They are eventually joined by Dave (MD) on lead guitar in late '77. With a nucleus of Rene, Dave, Andy and Bucko they record their first session at Central Sound in Manchester from which the Rock Section EP is cut. After one or two name and personnel changes they eventually become The Colours Out Of Time; Rene, Dave and Andy locate two other necessarily intelligent musicians on the same wavelength - John Durrant and Phil Bourne. Katch 22 were a bunch of young boys that produced the UK answer to the US Soft-Rock scene. It is ironic that a UK band can be so influenced by those US bands that were most highly under the influence of British popsike! Think of Harper's Bizarre, The Association, The Millenium or Eternity's Children even higher on tea! A surprisingly good production for a Saga pop/psych LP, the album is built up of excellent cover versions of some greats of the genre, paying tribute to the likes of The Left Banke ('Walk Away Rene'), Simon & Garfunkel / Harper's Bizarre ('Feelin' Groovy') or even Buffalo Springfield ('Go And Say Goodbye') and also of some good originals in the same vein. It is certainly an underated period piece that deserves a wider recognition, a great sounding album of orchestrated (and non orchestrated) pop sounds. The album was originally issued on Saga / Eros subsidiary in 1968, and the Wah Wah reissue respects the colourful sleeve and reprints the original insert, with sound remastered from the original tapes by Denis Blackham at Skye Mastering.
