SPEAKEASY- ST (great British R&B style ) - Label:PAISLEY ARCHIVE UK If ever the term ‘Super Group’ applied to a band on the Mod scene, it applies to Speakeasy. Featuring Brett “Buddy” Ascott (The Chords/The Rage/Pope), Simon Stebbing (Purple Hearts/RT3), Mark le Gallez (The Risk/Thee Jenerators), Fay Hallam (Makin Time/Prime Movers/Fay Hallam Trinity) and the late, great, Mike Evans (The Action/Mighty Baby), the band came together as the ‘House Band’ for the Mod Aid 20 single in January 2005. They subsequently recorded a glorious EP at Toe Rag for Biff Bang Pow Records later that same year featuring one song each from Simon, Mark & Fay (included on this CD). Sadly Mike is no longer with us, but with Mic Stonier taking up bass duties (and Fay busy on other projects) the nucleus reassembled to record a heartfelt cover of The Actions’ “Shadows and Reflections” in tribute to Mike, and carried on to record enough material for Speakeasy to release this full length CD on the Paisley Archive imprint of Detour Records. So what is it like? There’s a real British R&B feel on some of the tracks (‘Let’s Roll’) and some great musicianship too (‘Your Precious Ways’), with a number of songs that could be contenders for A-sides of singles (‘The Blues Have Got Me’, ‘Red Wine Song’, ‘Soul Searching’, ‘Love and Understanding’) and Fay’s Hammond masterpiece, ‘Seeds’. Yoursurely know this legendary psychedelic album, recorded in 1968 and never yet officially reissued until now. The album was recorded in the Ingeson studios, who had just bought the newest equipment and thought Speakers were the perfect band to work with it and try to get the best results from the equipment. The Ingeson guys offered the studios to the band for no money, only asking them to mention in the album that it was recorded there, so to make a publicity for the studios. Hence the title of the album "In the marvelous world of Ingeson"!!! Musically, the album is as psychedelic as you may dream from a South American '68 album. With acid guitar, sound effects, playing with repetitive sounds and incisive lyrics in Spanish language. A total masterpiece of weird psychedelia that went nearly unnoticed in Columbia even being the Speakers the bigger name in that country's rock scene of the 60's. What makes this release even better is the deluxe treatment it had. Fantastic remastered sound, a 7x 7 CD cover including a 20 page full colour booklet (20x20 too!), and even a replica of the supposed LSD bubblegum that was included in the original album. THOMAS PEPPER SMELTER - Soul & Pepper mini slv replica ( Peruvian 60s psych freakbeat )- Label:LION PRODUCTIONS (USA) & REPSYCHLED RECORDS (Peru) The first official reissue of this much-bootlegged classic South American psychedelic freakbeat album, recorded in 1969 by Peruvian band The (St. Thomas) Pepper Smelter. Perhaps the story of the band is not well known, but their achievements were great—and international: editions of their sole LP were produced in Peru, Mexico, Brazil and Ecuador, and 45rpm singles were published in Mexico and Greece. St. Thomas Pepper Smelter was formed by Gerardo Manuel Rojas on vocals and tambourine, Beto Tataje on rhythm guitar and lead guitar, Juan Carlos Barreda on bass and vocals, Carlos Manuel Barreda on drums and backing vocals (all from the famous group Los Shains), and Freddy Macedo on keyboards. Their first single was a cover of ‘Purple Haze’ b/w one of their own compositions, ‘A New Summer.’ The band then began to record their only LP. That album contains twelve tracks—six written by the band, and the other half cover versions. The band's music could be described as freak beat; in many ways, it is a preview of the garage /surf style of Los Shain's, heading towards the heavy psychedelic rock of Gerardo Manuel & El Humo. At the time, St. Thomas Pepper Smelter simply called it “underground music.” Gerardo’s voice is soft in the band’s own songs, and aggressive on the cover tunes; his guitar style oozes fuzz. The foundation of bass and drums by the brothers Barreda is very powerful and strong; and the songs benefit from the layers of keyboard played by Freddy Macedo. This fully licensed, hand-numbered, limited edition CD release comes in a mini-LP sleeve replica of the original album art; it also comes with a replica of an original poster; a replica of an original color photo of the band. STONE COUNTRY - ST ( Only album from Hollywood, CA based psychedelic country-rock outfit 67 ) - Label:CHERRY RED Only album from Hollywood, CA based psychedelic country-rock outfit led by gifted singer/songwriter/guitarist Steve Young. Young had moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and began working with Van Dyke Parks and Stephen Stills while keeping his day job as a mailman. He formed Stone Country in 1967 and soon thereafter the band was signed to RCA Records. After releasing several singles, RCA issued the group's only album, Stone Country, in March 1968, produced by Rick Jarrard, who also produced Jefferson Airplane and Harry Nilsson's "Pandemonium Shadow Show." Their only album is a must have for any one with even the slightest interest in things of psychedelic or country nature. It was clear from the beginning that Young was the group’s most distinctive songwriter and vocalist. 'Magnolias,' a Young original, was one of the LP’s highlights and a unique mixture of Southern soul and swamp rock that only he could deliver‚ a very gritty vocal performance too. 'Woman Don’t You Weep' was more of the same, another good Young roots rocker with a driving beat and an attractive string arrangement. Two raga rock gems, 'Love Psalm' and 'Mantra' have nice fuzz guitar work and could easily fit in on the Byrds classic "Notorious Byrd Brothers" LP. Other tracks hit more of an Association soft-pop sound (‘Lizabeth Peach' and 'Everywhere I Turn,' both very good) while 'Why Baby Why' (a George Jones cover) and 'Life Stands Daring Me' show off the group’s country roots. The latter is a particularly imaginative slice of psychedelic country-rock with its soaring vocals, glittering guitars and wild banjo picking. SUNFOREST- The Sound of(UK Acid folk‘69) 20-page booklet with additional insider information on the band, & lyrics-Label:ACME LION There was once a band called Sunforest, who recorded a splendid album in 1969. The record is (as has been said elsewhere) a unique compendium of UK acid folk with a popsike feel, sporting harpsichord and (somewhat) medieval-tinged arrangements integrated into electric and acoustic folk-esque tunes. But one thing must be said straight away: the Sunforest album is not at all twee—the songs are far too clever, and the production (by legendary producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven) has far too much depth—we say this despite cover art that seems to have misled people since the album was released. Worthy of special mention is the phenomenal folk/funk vibe-fest 'Magician In The Mountain,' which has made this LP the object of desire of many a DJ and a sampler. And, of course, lest we forget, the Sunforest album supplies the answer to the recent burning question (for those of you living in the UK): “What’s that song on the Marks and Spencer TV advert—the one with Twiggy and those other girls in it, singing, "I want to marry a lighthouse keeper.” Why, it’s ‘Lighthouse Keeper,’ of course! The sound of Sunforest was enlivened by contributions from exceptional and experienced studio musicians. On this album, you can hear supple work from bass guitarist par excellance Herbie Flowers (it’s his bass that makes Lou Reed's ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ one of the best late-night songs ever written; he also played bass on the Serge Gainsbourg’s “Histoire de Melody Nelson”). He was joined for the Sunforest sessions by his compatriot in the Jean-Claude Vannier Orchestra, guitarist on an incredible variety of UK number one hit songs (fifty-nine to be exact), including the Kink’s “You Really Got Me,” Thunderclap Newman’s "Something in the Air,’ and Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg’s orgasmic classic ‘Je t'aime... moi non plus’: session-guitarist extraordinaire (and the mastermind behind the Lord Sitar and “Sitar Beat” albums), Big Jim Sullivan. Yes, here on the Sunforest album these two titans of UK rock can be found working with another legend, Vic Smith, on what turned out to be the only release from a trio of unpretentious girls, discovered in a cafe. Many of the best tracks from these are gathered on “Summer Turns To Autumn”. Foremost among the artists compiled here is progressive rock band Blonde On Blonde, represented by tracks from both of their Ember albums. Fantastic Voyage has salvaged two tracks from Blue Beard s album. An early songwriting/production project for Bob Welch, who next surfaced in Fleetwood Mac, the album was only released in Italy, but the single ‘Sly Willy’ was more widely available and is highly prized by collectors of funky rock. Tyrannosaurus Rex-style acoustic hippy duo Knocker Jungle and progressive folk group 9.30 Fly each managed one now highly collectable long player for the label. The remainder of the material ranges from the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Canadians The Dorians and the melodic folk rock of Paddy Maguire, backed by heavy friends Steve Winwood and Jerry Donahue (of Fotheringay), to the soul-rock fusion of Milt Matthews Inc, here interpreting a Blind Faith song, and a previously unissued folk rock rendition of ‘East Virginia’ by Polly Niles. “Summer Turns To Autumn” complement Fantastic Voyage’s existing, highly popular compilations of Ember Beat and Ember Pop, with no duplication of tracks. The first volume of Killed by Death appeared around 1988, the brainchild of (according to legend) a New York-based Swedish record collector who gathered up 25 of his all-time favorite new wave-ish rarities and unleashed them on what was then very much a fledgling punk collectors' market.Concentrating almost wholly on '80s Americana, but with the odd early import to shake things up, the end result was an eclectic but nevertheless exciting package, its contents ranging from the Slugs, featuring former New York Doll Rick Rivets, to northwest D.I.Y. originators the Wipers, but climaxing with one of the most in-demand records of the age, the then-ascendant Beastie Boys' super-rare Pollywog Stew EP. That the Beasties of such early renown had little in common with the slick rappers of later years is, of course, crucial to the material's success; had they sounded anything like you expected them to, they'd never have fit on this collection so well. ANTORCHAS, LAS - ST ( ultra-rare 60s Mexican psych w. liner notes, and a poster insert that replicates the Orfeon EP art) - Label:VAM MEXICO Las Antorchas were formed in 1965 by five college students in Mexico City. They released only one EP on Orfeon, but had recorded enough material for an album. They split around 1968/69, but after a line-up change they continued under the name of Antorcha. Thanks to the persistence of VAM Records and record producer Manuel Alvarez Valdez, we now have all known material of Las Antorchas, including their Orfeon material. Their early sounds are rock/beat influenced, with most relying on organ and vocals. But the excellent ‘Dime’ is a really great acid-punk track. John Arcesi was a veteran singer of the big band era who, in the early '70s, recorded a pop album with help from an anonymous hip studio musicians. The album was released in a private edition of 300 copies and most of them were given away to family and friends. In the late '80s, one of those copies was unearthed by record dealer Paul Major, who was one of the first people to appreciate the singularity of Reachin' Arcesia. Since then, the album, which mixes over-the-top crooner vocals with late '60s acid-rock and pop arrangements, has developed a reputation as a lounge-psych/real people masterpiece.
