RHYTHM CHECKERS, THE- 1966/67 Wild Raw Eurobeat (60’s raw garage blues ) -Label:GROOVIE Exceptional beat group playing a raw mixture of rhythm and blues and rock and roll with a wild garage attitude. Maybe we can call them the European Sonics. Formed by musicians native to France, Germany and Holland with Roland 'Bouboule' Bauer (vocal), the regretted Robby Sterheim (lead guitar), Eddy Van Nelfen (rhythm guitar), Kurth Horbach (bass), later replaced by Dany Gentner and Norbert Holweck (drums), they set the stage on fire during their shows in France between the years 1966 and 1967. It is in Strasbourg where The Rhythm Checkers release their first EP with their powerful composition 'Cause I Need You,' which is a real classic of European garage rock. Their second EP is a unique document of their stage savageness thanks to these recordings captured live when they opened for Chuck Berry in Paris on February 1967. It's amazing how these guys made it live... they make my wig jump listening on record. The eight mythical tracks of their two rare records are present on this LP, and as a bonus, both sides of their single recorded in 1972 during the reformation of the group under the name of Checkers in the prog-pop style of the time. HOLLIS BROWN - Ride on the Train digipack -Label:ALIVE Taking queues from classic pop, rock’n'roll, and Americana, Hollis Brown combines raw rock sensibilities with sweet melodies and hearfelt lyrics to create a rich, warm sound that can fill any room. HUMAN INSTINCT - Burning Up Years (superb 60s UK Psych /Freakbeat ) - Label:SUNBEAM Having spent 18 months playing the British circuit alongside The Jeff Beck Group, The Moody Blues, The Nice and many others, the original Human Instinct folded in the spring of 1968. Undeterred, leader Maurice Greer returned to New Zealand and recruited guitar legend Billy Te Kahika to form a new, harder-hitting version of the band. After honing their incendiary act in the countrys leading clubs, they recorded this blistering, bluesy set in late 1969. (originally from Portland, Oregon), were full-fledged members of the L.A. psych scene of the late-sixties, and despite their opening for top-shelf acts like the Doors and The Strawberry Alarm Clock, their one and only album did not make much of a splash at the time, and the band dissolved soon after its release. However, the album has since become one of the most collectible in its genre and upon listening one can see why. This rhythm-heavy Doors-influenced hard psych is frequently referred to as "one of the best psychedelic albums of all time"! IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO - Serio 2222 - W 12 PAGE BOOKLET ( Raw-edged heavy rock ) -Label:LION Raw-edged heavy rock, fronted by Lino Ajello's powerful electric guitars, channeling the dark, jagged energy of Jimmy Page, Adrian Gurvitz, and Jeff Beck. Il Balletto di Bronzo absorbed their influences (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds), but moved from there into an inspired, hard-edged musical space; the band's overwhelming power and great melodies make them irresistible. ‘Un posto’ and ‘Neve Calda’ are centered around simple but effective guitar riffs. ‘Eh eh ah ah’ starts like a nice mellow ballad, but gets into a hard blues rock groove. On side two, there's the seven-minute mammoth heavy grind of ‘Incantesimo’ and the colossal ‘Missione Sirio 2222,’ almost ten minutes of droning acid rock with whirling guitars and heavy pounding drums, sandwiched between an acoustic intro and outro. JADE STONE AND LUV -Mosaics, Pieces of Stone(lost gem from the psych 70s )-Label:Subliminal Sound The sole album from male-female duo Jade Stone & Luv is a lost gem from the heart of the psychedelic 1970s. Composed and self-produced in Nashville, "Mosaics; Pieces Of Stone" went unnoticed by the music industry upon release. Fortunately for us, it didnt disappear forever, but simply went into retreat, biding its time. While almost unknown outside specialist circles, "Mosaics" has been an underground cult favorite for many years. The combination of top-level songwriting, skillful guitar/keyboard arrangements and soaring vocals is just too impressive to ignore. And beyond these obvious qualities, the album has something subtle and unique, a magnetic power that keeps drawing the listener back. One of Jade Stone & Luv's earliest advocates was the legendary New York City musicologist Paul Major. Heres a typical Major impression of the music on "Mosaics": "Groovy love vibes thru a prism of jade statues in swinging singles apartment complex action... Cadillac with fuzzy dice, feather boa, lotsa cigarette burns, stale perfumed ashen air. This album in the 8-track player at 5 AM with someone you don't even know passed out in the backseat, as you head to the diner to meet up with an early-bird Lava Lite salesman who deals pills on the side. Bubbly champagne molecules become the plastic vinyl booths in dim-lit dive bars; it's crackerbox post-war suburban low-rent psychedelic." The albums cinematic qualities were also highlighted in a review in the recent Acid Archives book, which deals with vintage underground music: ".The music is notoriously hard to describe, but projects scenes of all-night cruising through Edge City... a hip which is not metropolitan hip, but dreams of stardom and glamour from the American underbelly, two renegade souls zooming down the highway between Austin and Nashville..." After 30 years, this rare experience is finally available for general consumption.
