RINGS - I Wanna Be Free ( 70s psych) w TWINK ltd ed -Label:PARAMECIUM Another Chiswick release in Paramecium Records, their fourth release is the amazing single of The Rings, I wanna be free / Automobile. The Rings were an unusual band so they were a young band fronted by an older underground musician (Twink, real name John Alder, veteran of many psychedelic bands including Tomorrow and The Pink Fairies). I wanna be free is a minimalist punk anthem, in which the song title and not much else by way of lyrics is chanted over and over again above a killer riff. This single was released in May of 1977 and was repressed two times more, one of these with a different sleeve, this Delga Press Limited edition has been used in our release. LAZARUS- ST ( rare 70s psych All-English vocals, amazing fuzz guitar ) - Label:SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY) Among collectors, Lazarus was a big mystery since nobody had ever found a copy for the past 25 years. Hans Pokora (Record Collector Dreams) managed to locate an original LP and the band as well, and Shadoks was able to work out a deal. Do not expect a naive Krau*rock style -- this is pure underground with a good dose of psychedelia. CD $16 SKU:15886
LAZY COWGIRLS - A Little Sex and Death ( old-school punk at its finest. ) - Label:CRYPT Pat Todd, always one of rock's great bellowers, never sounds less than thoroughly committed throughout. If it isn't quite as good as the album that immediately preceded it, A Little Sex and Death is still a far stronger and more committed work than nearly any other band covering their territory has made in ages -- no small accomplishment after 14 years in the game.

LAZY COWGIRLS - Ragged Soul ( old-school punk at its finest. ) - Label:CRYPT Ragged Soul was the first album in five years from the Lazy Cowgirls, and from the first blast of D.D. Weekday's guitar on "I Can't Be Satisfied" it's obvious that this band was ready to make up for lost time. Against all odds, Ragged Soul sounds like the band's best album ever; the twin-guitar punch of Weekday and Michael Leigh offers plenty of kick with no clutter, the rhythm section (Leonard Keringer on bass and Ed Huerta on drums) drives the songs forward without crowding anyone in the process, and Pat Todd proves he's one of the greatest unsung frontmen in rock, pouring out fire and passion on every cut. The material is top shelf, too, especially the bitterly anthemic "Frustration, Tragedy and Lies" and "Bought Your Lies." Tough, furious, loud and proud -- Ragged Soul is roots-smart old-school punk at its finest. ~ Mark Deming CD $5 SKU:12780

LIGHT-Turn on the ( 60s psych ) Label:UGLY THINGS The LIGHT was a dynamic, multi-talented supergroup from California's Inland Empire. Formed early 1967, the group united the brightest talents from two of the area's most popular garage bands, the Bush and the Northside Moss. After attracting the attention of Music Machine producer Brian Ross they recorded a single for A&M Records, a Jekyll & Hyde pairing featuring a gorgeous Left-Banke-style A-side "Music Box" and a fuzz-guitar monster flipside, "Back Up." By the end of the summer they had evolved into an incendiary West Coast psychedelic rock ensemble comparable to the Buffalo Springfield or Moby Grape, but with the dual lead guitar firepower of the Beck-Page Yardbirds. CD $12 SKU:6519
LIGHTNING - 1968-1971 ( archival 12-page booklet with lots of photos and liner notes by Litter-scribe Doug Sheppard. ) SAAALE- Label:ARF ARF Lightning was an offshoot of Minneapolis '60s legends Litter that featured guitar wizard Tom 'Zippy' Caplan. After recording the Litter's 1966 garage classic Distortions and 1968 psych masterpiece $100 Fine, Caplan split from the Litter and formed Lightning. The band started out as a power trio and cut one fierce Cream-inspired single 'William' b/w 'Of Paupers And Poets' in 1968 under the White Lightning moniker with Twin Cities record producer Warren Kendrick. The band regrouped into a quintet and scored a record deal with P.I.P. which issued their eight-song album. That album has since become a highly collectable LP. Lightning became one of the Midwest's hardest working rock acts and toured extensively throughout the region during their three-year tenure. This authorized CD reissue includes their entire LP, the aforementioned 45, plus six additional bonus tracks (including edited 45 mixes of two album tracks) all wrapped in an archival 12-page booklet with lots of photos and liner notes by Litter-scribe Doug Sheppard. Between this package and Arf Arf's White Lightning Strikes Twice [1968-1969] release, the band's entire musical legacy has been properly archived. Fans of Blue Cheer, Cream, Hendrix, and Arf Arf's four psychedelic Dose comps will really dig this new disc CD $10 SKU:12952
LIQUID SMOKE - ST ( 70s lost hard rock w liners ) - Label:RELICS (UK) Relics reissues this lost hard rock gem from Liquid Smoke, originally released in 1970. First time on CD. Background notes included. - "Sludgy, Vanilla Fudge-y organ-rock with a biker sensibility, convincingly tough playing and some of the filthiest fuzz imaginable." --Endless Trip
This gritty quintet's roots lay in North Carolina, but they made their name in Long Island. Their sole album was recorded in 1969, and originally issued in January 1970. Produced by Vinny Testa (best-known for his association with Frijid Pink), it's a hard-edged mixture of originals and covers, with plenty of fuzz guitar and meaty organ. It makes its long-overdue return to CD here, complete with background notes. CD $17 SKU:15865
LITTLE FREE ROCK- ST (classic 60s PSYCH heavy rock) SALE - Label:MISCHIEF classic '60s Heavy Rock trio from England, originally released in 1969. The band featured Peter Illingworth (formally with the Mood and Joe Meek) Paul Varley and Frank Newbold. They performed regularly at the Roundhouse in London and also the Marquee Club, going on to build a huge cult following not only in the UK but also across the whole of Europe. This mighty fine Blues Prog Rock band went on to record with Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green. Mischief. CD $9 SKU:8369
LONDON DRI - Western Skies LOS ANGELES PSYCHEDELIC 1967-69 8-page booklet with history by Mike Dugo & pics -Label:BREAKAWAY London Dri entered Audio Sonic Sound Studio to record what would be their only 45-rpm single. ‘Life in Your Hand’, an original song written by guitarist Bruce Thomas. Released on the Yobo label, the single represented the entire released output by the Los Angeles-based combo. Between their 1965 formation and their disbandment in 1970, however—amongst hundreds of performances and even a movie appearance—The London Dri recorded several other songs that, had they been released, would certainly have earned the group a more prominent standing today among Hollywood rock groups of the era. One of the most remarkable tracks doubtlessly is 'This Is Life,' practically the London Dri’s version of the Caretakers Of Deception’s legendary garage/psych classic 'X+Y= 13.' Others, such as 'The Other Side Of Soul' and 'Western Skies' are both melodic period west-coast rock pieces with excellent psychedelic guitar playing. 'Hurry,' 'Wanting To Know You' and 'Sorry' are all from The Misunderstood school of sound and show some clear shades of UK Freakbeat/Psych bands such as The Game, Mike Stuart Span or The Attack. The only cover version is an over 5-minute long rendition of Big Brother & The Holding Company’s 'Combinations.' London Dri had it all: From garage-rock to classic US psychedelia to UK styled Mod/psych. Finally here’s the band’s legacy—11 killer tracks in their distinctive London Dri style. Detailed 8-page booklet with history by Mike Dugo & pics too. CD $17 SKU:16371
LOST & FOUND- Everybody's Here ( Elevators style 60s psych - Rigid digibook w 16-page illustrated booklet plus 3 bonus cuts ) -Label:CHARLY Originally known as The Misfits, Lost & Found came together in Houston in 1965, changing their name just prior to undertaking a six-month residency at Houston's Living Eye Club -- one of the centres of the area's thriving psychedelic scene. Like anyone who frequented the club, smoked the odd joint and worshipped at the altar of The 13th Floor Elevators, they became friends with Roky Erickson. He in turn introduced them to Lelan Rogers of International Artists, who promptly signed them up. The group's sound displayed a marked Byrds and Love influence, which doubtless stemmed from the time they had spent in L.A. A planned follow-up album for International Artists unfortunately never came to fruition after the band disintegrated after a 30-day Texas tour with national garage gods The Music Machine. Band member Peter Black later joined Endle St Cloud." Comes in a deluxe digibook with 16-page booklet and International Artists catalog. Includes three bonus tracks: "When Will You Come Through," "Professor Black" and "25 MPH." CD $12 SKU:15698

LOVEMASTERS w Ron Asheton - ST (Detroit Stooges style) digipack SAALE - Label:TOTAL ENERGY - Hot Pants Zone. Detroit guitar action featuring ex-Ramrods Robert Mulrooney, and with Ron Asheton of the Stooges making a guest appearance. “The groove-savvy, born-in-the-garage-set-the-world-on-fire sound explosion of Motor City's MC5 and Stooges - the same sound that drove Radio Birdman, the Scientists, Big Chief, etc all to create such great fare - is alive and kickin' on the Lovemasters' six-song EP. Led by local legend Bootsey X, a.k.a. Robert Mulrooney (ex Ramrods), the Detroit band cranks it up, puts it into drive and rocks - hard.” - L. Anderson / CMJ CD $3 SKU:2234
LOVETONES - Be What you Want - the true essence of psychedelic pop. ! Label:Evil 9 Although these guys are from Sydney Australia, if you didn't know any better you'd swear they were from the UK, as Be What You Want is filled with the kind of textural, psychedelic-tinged sounds that the un-informed mainstream press will liken to Radiohead. Lead vocalist Matthew Tow (formerly of Drop City) possesses a powerful instrument indeed, which serves the band well on cool, Brit-pop tunes like 'The Sound And The Fury', 'Give It All I Can', and 'Something Good'. The album has its lighter moments as well; 'Drink The Night (My Love)' will recall Squeeze with its octave-separated vocal harmonies and 'The One And Only', with its soulful bent guitar notes, is as catchy as pop music gets. There's also the standout ballad 'It's Always Been This Way', which has the kind of gut-wrenching impact that Dennis Wilson provided on Pacific Ocean Blue. Good stuff, this! (Shindig review).
"Guided by brilliant production, Be What You Want, is a pop-rock classic. Distinguished by golden melodies and a subject matter that is emotionally direct and largely autobiographical, the Lovetones are reviving the true essence of psychedelic pop."[Rolling Stone]
"The best Australian band you haven't heard of yet. This punchy debut will be blasting from a radio speaker near you soon. It leaves you hungry for more."[Courier Mail].

LYRES- On Fyre digipack -Label:MUNSTER RECORDS (SPAIN) TRACKLISTINGS ON SITE CD $17 SKU:14635
LYRES- A Promise Is a Promise digipack -Label:MUNSTER RECORDS (SPAIN) Munster reissues the third Lyres LP, originally released on Ace of Hearts, from 1988. "Anyone following the career of Lyres for any length of time throughout that mid-to-late '80s period would doubtless be interested in the ongoing personnel shuffles that were taking place around this time. 'What really happened,' Jeff Conolly explains, 'is that we had to totally re-group the line-up with each LP because people instantly discovered that it was nearly impossible to go professional and maintain a living and do the kind of not-sell-out music we did at the same time. Our special Murphy drummer would leave and then re-join many, many times, and then we started getting robbed on tour a lot, and many nice things were lost to us... After the tour van got busted into in Amsterdam in May 1987 we had to get a new guitar guy to go along with our new rhythm section. At this point there was very little 'connection' with the original concept or sound of the 1979 group which had been founded on being aspiring amateur musicians.' Although one or two of USA's then modern garage-type bands were beginning to make some inroads beyond a cult-only success, particularly overseas, it was nearly always accepted as a given that playing this type of unfashionable music could only ever result in rather limited dividends, commercially speaking. But successful or otherwise, Lyres can be seen as purveyors of a rich stream of powerful music, distilled from an amalgam of influences, injected with unusual verve and vitality, and presented in a wholly authentic, provocatively different way from all other groups. Of the many startling 'Conolloid' creations, self-penned, or imaginatively reinvestigated, one wonders often how Lyres came up with such radical reinterpretations of songs such as Dave Dee and company's life-affirming piano ballad 'Here's a Heart.' 'I started buying original UK freakbeat records beginning in the early 1980s when they were still relatively affordable,' states Conolly. 'I liked that weirdo USA Fontana Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich LP that had a ton of their hits on it, and I finally realized that their recording of 'Here's a Heart' had the special charming majick. On one of our trips to Paris I crashed with Carolyn and Stiv [Bators -- ex of U.S. punks The Dead Boys] and we discovered that we were both nuts about 'Here's a Heart.' I had bought myself a nice and reasonable DDDBM&T EP souvenir that afternoon at USA Records and we played it at Carolyn's and me and Stiv sang with it a lot. We kinda agreed to record it in one way or another, and later in January 1988 Stiv was in NYC and he came down to sing it with me live for the album #3.' With any kind of success, whether musical or otherwise, there also comes with it a certain degree of pressure, and so it was no different for Conolly and Lyres. 'All of a sudden I had to figure out a 'new' kind of Lyres sound and matching style/material to go with it,' says Conolly. 'And I had to do it real fast, so I started coming up with junk that was sort of like the very expensive but cool records I had been acquiring and sort of investigating, these freakbeaty records, which accounts for our trying to sort of figure out John's Children in 1987 and 1988.'" --Lenny Helsing CD $17 SKU:14875

Personally I find it outrageous that these Lads don't have Knighthoods - this stuff is great... CD $5 SKU:9288
MANCO, BARIS- Dunden Bugune ( 70s psych) booklet with new liners and photos - Label:Guerrson Barı Manço was one of the leading, most influential and most beloved Turkish rock musicians, along with Erkin Koray, Edip Akbayram and Cem Karaca, and this is his first long-player, released in 1971 by Sayan Productions. It's a compilation of tracks taken from previously-released 45s, plus the track "Lory" that only appears on this album. Killer psych-rock with a strong Turkish flavor, this features Baris' all-time classics like "Derule" and "Da lar Da lar I," as well as the brutal, wah-wah flooded "Küçük Bir Gece Müzigi," with its infectious drumming that drives anyone searching for sampling stuff mad. Not to be confused with two different releases with the same name that actually have different tracklistings and artwork, this is the real album as it was originally released and the first legit CD reissue. Also includes a booklet with great photos of Barı ; and extensive liner notes.TRACKLISTINGS ON SITE CD $17 SKU:13926

EMBER BEAT 60S POP Vol 1 - VA Say When - Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE In 1959, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway in that era. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. This CD series The Ember Sixties Pop series will collect the best of those records on to several volumes, starting with this compilation, which covers up to 1961. Michael Cox had appeared on Jack Good s television show Boy Meets Girl . Jack introduced him to Joe Meek who produced Angela Jones . Initially released on Meek s own Triumph label, and then on Ember. Grant Tracy & The Sunsets were signed up in early 1961. The Sunsets tried their luck first with Cry Of The Wild Goose , flipped by Manhunt , written by their guitarist, the young Pete Honeybus Dello. Their debut vocal sides Say When and Please Baby Please were written by Pomus-Shuman. Grant sounds a little like Elvis on the follow-up, Pretend backed with the King s own Love Me . The songs on Ray Merrell s Ember release were written by Ray together with Don Black and Cyril Stapleton under various pseudonyms. Why Did You Leave Me and Teenage Love are infectious teen items with pizzicato strings and strong lead guitar. Roy Young was on another Jack Good television show Oh Boy! . Roy recorded the storming Four An Twenty Thousand Kisses before going to Hamburg to appear with The Beatles when they were still called The Beat Brothers. Cuddly Duddly was probably the best known black British singer in 1961 thanks to many TV appearances, also on Oh Boy! . He is backed on the rocking Sitting On A Train and One That I Like by The Redcaps. The Larry Lawrence tracks have a strong Bill Black Combo influence, especially on the chugging Jug-A-Roo . Ray Ellington had the benefit of backing by Tony Crombie s band, and everybody was swinging nicely on Jump Over and The Madison . Julie, Hazel and Betty Dunderdale shortened their name to The Dale Sisters for their Ember debut, the bright and breezy My Sunday Baby . Pianist Tommy Sanderson was amongst the elite of London session players, frequently joined on dates by Bert Weedon on guitar and Ronnie Verrell on drums, who may have been The Sandmen on Deadline . Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Michael Cox are valued at £45 and both the Grant Tracy & The Sunsets releases at £20). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with sought after tracks by Carter, Lewis & The Southerners and Mark Douglas amongst those included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to Beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. EMBER BEAT 60S POP VOL 3 - VA Hello My Angel- Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series will collate the best of those records. “Hello My Angel” is the third installment. For his debut single, Ray Singer was backed by the arranging and producing talents of ace session pianist Arthur Greenslade and drummer Bobby Graham. Ray wrote the lively ‘Tell Me Now’ himself, while the bluesy flip ‘I’m Comin’ Home’ was provided by future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. Norman Fowler from York acquired the stage name Steve Cassidy for his 1963 John Barry-produced Ember 45; ‘Ecstasy’ was penned by the unusual combination of Marty Wilde and Mike Pratt, the latter a future star in the TV series Randall & Hopkirk. Count Downe & The Zeros were signed at the beginning of 1964 and cut their solitary single at Olympic. The plug side ‘Hello My Angel’ is included here. Checking the original tapes for this compilation has turned up a tremendous trove of tracks that were unissued at the time. They will be of considerable interest to Sixties collectors. Mark Wirtz masterminded Marcus Tro’s only 45, writing, arranging and producing b-side ‘What’s The Matter Little Girl.’ Another strong Wirtz production is Sheila & Jenny’s cover of ‘When The Boy’s Happy’ (a fine Jeff Barry-Ellie Greenwich number originally a US hit for The Four Pennies aka The Chiffons). Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde were Ember’s most successful artists in the States. ‘Lemon Tree’ had previously been a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary, while ‘Early In The Morning’ was actually composed by Paul. Russ Hamilton re-recorded 1957 hit ‘We Will Make Love’ for Ember with a more Sixties sound from the Greenslade-Graham team at Olympic. Ray Ellington’s fourth single for the company combined Lionel Bart’s ‘Rhythm Of The World’ with Roy Orbison’s ‘If You Can’t Say Anything Nice.’ Lynn Holland’s only Ember 45 featured energetic versions of the standards ‘And The Angels Sing’ and ‘I Can’t Read Your Writing (For My Tears).’ Pete Dello of The Sunsets’ melodic ‘Little Kelly’ first appeared on their 1964 LP Teenbeat. COMP CD $10 SKU:12976
EMBER BEAT VOL 3 - VA After Tonight 66-67 - Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE Third of three volumes detailing UK indie label Ember's releases from the sixties beat era. After Tonight concludes our survey of Ember's contribution to the beat scene. This release covers the years 1966 & 1967, when the beat scene was giving way to rock and psychedelia on one hand and teen-orientated pop on the other. Cover versions of both A Whiter Shade Of Pale (by Bobby Johnson & The Atoms) and The Theme From "The Monkees" (by The Peenuts) illustrate this divergence of markets. After Tonight serves up a track apiece by The Alleykatz, The Bats, Luvin Kind, Just Five and The People (who evolved into rock group Eire Apparent and recorded an album with Jimi Hendrix), concluding our reissue of tracks from the 1966 album Irelands Greatest Sounds: Five Top Groups From Belfasts Maritime Club. Elsewhere, styles range from the garage surf of The Clockwork Oranges to the club-friendly home-grown R&B sound of Bobby Johnson & The Atoms (whose contributions include a cover of the Otis Redding/Carla Thomas hit Tramp). Both singles by The Fadin Colours are included. The first is a cover of (Just Like) Romeo And Juliet, a US hit for The Reflections, while the second, the superior Be With Me, may never have got beyond acetate stage. Vocalist Ray Singer, later briefly a member of UK pop-psych band Nirvana, is represented by both sides of a single and a brace of album cuts. Pauls Troubles only released one single on Ember, but we have also drawn on previously unissued material. COMP CD $10 SKU:12988

EVERYBODY JIVE - To the London Rock (25 Jumpin' British Rock 'n' Roll Spins ) SAALE VA Label:PSYCHIC CIRCLE 25 Jumpin' British rock'n'roll spins. In the mid 1950s, while the Western World was still immersed in the aftermath of World War Two, a new concept was discovered. This concept, stroppy and rebellious, was the teenager. Up till then you were a child until you became an adult. One minute you were in short pants, the next you were smoking a pipe. Now there was an intermediary stage, during which you could experience the nascent pleasures of adulthood without having to succumb to its more mundane disciplines. These new teenagers needed new idols. They couldnt relate to the polite swing of the dance bands. Some found modern jazz a bit too esoteric, while, to be honest, the heart-throbs of the early 50s mostly looked like they were in their early 50s! Suddenly a wild, new sound from the USA was being broadcast over select airwaves. Singers with exotic names like Jerry Lee, Elvis, Buddy and Gene were strutting their stuff. Hollywood was beginning to embrace this movement, and, over in The UK, jazzmen, dance band members, crooners and hopeful kids were suddenly buying guitars, greasing back their hair and rockin like there was no tomorrow. Heres a selection of what was happening in the basements and coffee bars of Britain at that most wonderful and innocent of times. Weve got lids to be flipped, joints to be rocked and rugs to be cut. So what are you waiting for? TRACKLISTINGS ON SITE COMP CD $8 SKU:10858

RAKS! RAKS! RAKS! PERSIA'S 60'S- VA ( 60s 70s Iran garage psych ) w full color insert and liners SAALE-Label:RAKS RECORDS 17 Golden garage psych nuggets from the Iranian 60's scene.. As with almost all Asiatic countries, the Shadows and the Ventures seem to be the true and primal influence in the Iranian music scene of the most part of 60s for the rock sound and attitude to penetrate the country's fledgeling record industry and its swinging public base. In 1964, the legendary Top4 company opened up and started releasing choice chart hits from the worldwide lists, on 4-track EPs, followed soon by MonoGram and other companies. These mixed up records featured a lot of popular songs of the day, spanning the whole European continent i.e. including what's referred to now as 'Euro pop' hits and the 'big brothers', UK and US charts. The day's youth back then was lucky: they could follow the West moment by moment now. The foremost impact of these were to feature and spread British invaders, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, otherwise available only on radio. Come 1966, 60s was in full swing in Iran too! SAUCERS / ALLIES SPLIT - East Bay Punks-From the Streets of Berkeley 1978-81 SAALE - Label:RAVE UP Disillusionment with the "mellow 70's" was turning to rage as the US waged a proxy war in Central America, and San Francisco ignited into fiery riots after the assassination of its mayor and first openly gay city council member. The Saucers reflected these times with caustic humor and impassioned social commentary.
In 1980, the band after the departure of first keyboard player, Joey Michaels, renamed themselves The Allies, adding dynamic lead guitarist Craig Magee, formerly with Dyan Diamond (Runaways). With the addition of Magee, the band pivoted from the Saucers' Farfisa-dominated garage punk to a more muscular, guitar-driven sound.Local music producer and KALX engineer Terry Hammer worked behind the scenes to get both bands into the studio, with varied results, on display here. He also recorded a number of live shows for the two groups, and it's mostly thanks to his efforts that this music survives today. After the definitive split of the band, the drummer Jake Smith went on to join hardcore punk band Crucifix, played in an early version of Faith No More. COMP LP $5 SKU:12279

SENSACIONAL SOUL - Vol 3 DBL gatefold LP ( 60s Spanish soul w liners and photos ) SAALE - Label:VAMPISOUL (SPAIN) Volume 3 in Vampisoul's lauded Sensacional Soul series includes 28 Spanish soul stompers from 1966-1976. With the exception of England, no European country proved more vulnerable to the soul-fever which, from the second half of the '60s, swept Spain from north to south. The passion for black music was so contagious, that nobody could resist it. It is certainly true that all of this was fostered by the extraordinary surge in tourism and the consequent boom of clubs in the large cities and, most especially, the Mediterranean coast. If the extraordinarily high demand for live music that these night clubs and discotheques demanded could not be met by local musicians, the solution was simply to turn to foreign groups or to urgently recycle illustrious veteran bands marginalized by the new musical currents. On average, this churned out rather amateurish results or watered-down soul, yet many of those acts applied such passion to their work that their scarce discographic legacy -- today more than ever -- sets dancefloors alight, elates many hearts and demands the application of a proper label of origin in its thirst for exportation. Perfect and surprising proof of this was that this country would be the only one in Europe whose leading groups of the genre (Canarios and Pop-Tops) reached number one on the sales lists with their own tunes. Southern soul and the Tamla sound were the most consulted sources for Spanish musicians, but this collection also exhibits fascinating experiences between psychedelic soul, instrumental music, Afro-rock or gospel soul, although there are others that go beyond, or better said, that stay closer to home; songs whose origin is impossible to place, songs filled with echoes, twists and gimmicks that are absolutely Hispanic. The popular impact of soul was so broad and reached so many different audiences, that the creativity of those musicians was diverse, pluralistic and uncontrollable; for some purists, blasphemy, without a doubt, but for the rest, absolutely free music. Most tracks reissued for the first time. Includes detailed notes by expert Vicente Fabuel plus picture sleeves of all the tracks, band photos and labels. COMP LP $22 SKU:13985

SLOW GRIND FEVER - Yet More Vol 3 -Label:STAG-O-LEE (GERMANY) Stag-O-Lee presents the third volume of Slow Grind Fever, compiled by Richie1250 and subtitled YET MORE... Adventures in the sleazy world of POPCORN NOIR... The decade between 1953 and 1963 offers an endless supply of danceable, up-tempo tunes. We're talking rhythm 'n' blues, and the phase in the early '60s when it morphed into soul (now called new breed), as well as popcorn -- Belgian music with a mid-tempo style and a high groove-factor. The Slow Grind Fever series highlights the slower side of this period, and takes its title and inspiration from an Australian club night billed as "Melbourne's only slow dance party." These events would include only the "slowest, spookiest, sweetest records" the DJs could find, with folks dancing "real slow in a haze of smoke and dim red light." Stag-O-Lee was convinced that this was a great concept for a compilation series, and have collaborated with those behind the Melbourne club night to present Slow Grind Fever, the third volume of which includes tracks by The Notes, The El Torros, Eddie Cooley & The Dimples, Isley Brothers With Ray Ellis & Orch., Donna Dee, Charlie Williams, Henry Thome, Bob Lee, Little Willie John, Elizabeth Waldo, Bobby Rebel, Jessie Hill, The Flamingos, and Jimmy Scott. The band has a Stones-y retro sound drenched in Farfisa organ and harmonica. – CELEBSTONER
(2)HANDSOME JACK- Do What Comes Naturally (T shirt available )
"Between The Lines" is the most obvious example of the Stax influence : its major key guitar and bass groove is straight out of Memphis. But it's "You And Me"'s three-note guitar solo that best captures the band's ethos : keep it simple, keep it raw, make it groove. – Stephen Lawson / The BLUES
(3) PAUL COLLINS- Feel The Noise (T shirt available )
The production recalls the tight, immediate sound of the classic debut album from the Beat, and Collins is writing songs that play to his strengths as a rock & roller while displaying the lyrical viewpoint of a grown man.
(4) RADIO MOSCOW- Magical Dirt (T shirt available )
I would be lying if I did not say I have been completely taken with this, the fourth album from lovingly/freakishly retro combo Radio Moscow—a fabulous trio from Iowa including the amazing guitarist/singer Parker Griggs, bassist Anthony Meier and drummer Paul Marrone. With an album cover that absolutely evokes another album I have seen in my lifetime but simply can’t remember—must be the font, you’ve got to love these guys—the band actively evokes all that was great about hard-rock trios of the ‘60s, the Blue Cheers, the Creams, etc., but does it with such gleeful abandon you’ve got to admire both their spirit and whatever time capsule they rode in on. Great fun. – Dave Dimartino / ROLLING STONE
(5) SWAMP DOGG- The White Man Made Me Do It (T shirt available )
Nothing matches the mind-blowing power of these R&B/rock/protest/ progressive masterpieces. – ROCTOBER
(6) LONESOME SHACK- More Primitive (T shirt available )
Todd's droning blues figures display the influence of guitarists like Junior Kimbrough and John Lee Hooker, players whose playing could be described as raw, but display a powerful elegance. - PHOENIX NEW TIMES
(7) MOUNT CARMEL- Get Pure
To play boogie so hard it sounds like hardcore you have to be some bold, badass, bombastic, boredom breaking boog-ers! They get a top rating from the BBBB The Better Boogie Bluesrock Bureau). – ROCTOBER
(8) JOHN THE CONQUEROR- The Good Life
There's more soul in the opening 10 seconds of "Get Em" than in most major label output combined in the past decade. - Benjamin Ricci / PERFORMER MAGAZINE
(9) HOLLIS BROWN- Gets Loaded
RUST MAGAZINE-= Hollis Brown makes today the best day ever. Their debut album “Ride On The Train” is an immediate classic. Pulling from the roots of rock, soul, ballads, folk and jam this hybrid sound feels as comfortable as your old jeans and sneakers on a stroll through sunlit paths. Get-up-and-jam tracks are mixed with patient ballads and they all sound distinctive. Superior songwriting, analog processing and a self-evident dedication
