The music of this album seamlessly flows through deep dark mid-tempo boogies, smoky upbeat burners and soulful feel-good rockers all with a natural ease… damn catchy. – GLIDE MAGAZINE
LONESOME SHACK declared to be ALBUM of the year by MUSIC TAP, see the reviews here.
While honouring the past, this record sounds as bright as a new penny. That about sums up the feel of this recording: planted in yesteryear but cultivated firmly in the now.– THE BLUEGRASS SITUATION
I know it’s early but mark my words: come curtains on December, Lonesome Shack’s Desert Dreams – the London-by-way-of-Seattle trio’s latest full-length player – will still be creeping under the skin of critics’ lists as a contender for one of the best records of 2019. The LP, an absolutely hypnotizing blend of Junior Kimbrough-style deep-blues, urban folk and Fahey-esque slow expansion, is just that goddamn good.– MUSIC TAP
Showcases Ben Todd’s finger picking guitar, with eerie blues vocals and a sound that seems to carry his love of North Mississippi blues as much as it does the West African guitar style of acts like Tinariwen.– GLIDE MAGAZINE

COOLEY MUNSON- In Debt (70s So Cal. hippie psych ) -Label:GUERSSEN RECORDS Bill Cooley and Alan Munson were two friends in Santa Barbara, California, living their early 20s writing folk-rock songs for their pleasure. That was 1972, and they decided to put these songs into the studio, self-produce the album and press a tiny quantity of 500 pieces hoping it could help getting a contract with a major company. This never happened, as you would have guessed, and sure this fact helped making their sole album, In Debt, a major collectable item in the folk-rock and psychedelic rock listeners and collectors. Today, original copies of this record fetch quite interesting sums when changing hands in record fairs or internet auctions. Being a private pressing, you can easily imagine it's not a big production, but no care. This album has the right feel and you won't need anything else to make it one of your faves. All tracks are original compositions, and the style is very personal. It's folk-rock, but many tracks are quite psychedelic too, in their own way. But don't look close for influences, they will not come to mind that easily. Bill and Alan had their own psychedelic folk-rock style, and the raw, sometimes amateurish feel that these recordings have give the album the final distinctive touch. Never reissued before in any format, now here we come with a splendid reissue, with the collaboration of the guys. Remastered sound taken from the master tapes, CD version comes with booklet and outer slimcase. Alan Munson kept going the folk-rock way and released two solo albums during the '70s too, which we are also re-releasing along with In Debt. CD $10 SKU:7814
COSA NOSTRA -ST (1971 rare Latin psych funk) Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA Heavy duty rare Latin funk psych album recorded in Mexico City in 1971, their English language debut (not to be confused with their Spanish-language second album, reissued by Lazarus on LP); heavy grooves right from the start, with hard guitar, bass, drums and organ kicking it and not letting up; sounds a little like the Black Sugar albums, if you can imagine U-Roy “singing” along with the rhythm tracks, and some strangely dissonant background singers chiming in to boot; but all vocal limitations aside, has some great cuts, such as the eponymous track ‘Cosa Nostra’, the funky ‘Squeeze it Tight’ with a real pushy groove, the rife-for-sample intro to ‘Proud Mary’, and the shimmering ‘Change of Mind’CD $10 SKU:20394
CUERO - Crecimiento RARE 70S OBSCURE ARGENTINE CLASSIC--Label:FONOCOL Obscure classic from the Argentinean '70s rock scene. Debut album by Cuero was released in 1973 and is a great heavy psych-rock & blues-rock album, very rare and hard to find as an original. Stunning guitar work and Spanish language vocals, seven long tracks, all original compositions. CD $10 SKU:19941
CWT -Hundredweight (1973 Brit heavy rock) -Label:OHRWASCHL RECORDS/KUCKUCK (Germany) The only album from this English heavy rock trio, released on Kuckuck in 1973—one of the heaviest acts on the label. CWT Guest musician Cy Payne is responsible for the brass arrangements, which gives CWT a very special sound; apart from the fantastic guitar and vocal work of Graham Jones, the brass section gives CWT a Motown Soul touch, a real heavy groove. All in all, it makes "The Hundredweight" an interesting album with some faster and softer points. Tracks like ‘Steam Roller’ are devastating, filled with the hardest riffing and rough vocals. It might be accurate to compare CWT with bands like Sir Lord Baltimore or Cactus: they are of a same class, so to speak, and all liked their basic heavy blues rock CD $14 SKU:20747

DANIELS, ELLIE - Both Sides of the Coin (teenage folk private press album from 1971) 3 ONLY! Label:TIME LAG Deluxe cd version of this reissue of totally unknown New England teenage folk private press album from 1971. Originally released by the artist herself as a demo-only, blank cover edition of 100 copies—she was just out of high school and hoping somebody might pay attention, but the LP slipped though the cracks, the chapter closed, and life moved forward on a different course. But the album stands as a true female loner folk gem, of which there aren't many at all: just Ellie's humbly intimate vocals and her harp-like self taught finger-picked guitar playing, plus some lovely pastoral flute by a friend on a handful of tracks. The sounds are straight from the tuned-in melancholy teenage mind, reeling from the mind expansion of the 60s, but also the excesses—the aching innocence of youth tempered by a biting contempt for all things false. Deeply reflective, poetic and searching lyrics of love / nature / peace playing out in real time against stark reality / longing / loss, and balanced at the very edge of the void. In the liner notes Ellie mentions only practicing under a blanket, and there's a up-close, lo-fi, almost voyeuristic realism / fragility here that's quite special. A complex and personal trip that takes some time and attention to fully unfold. Once it does, it will be no surprise that Ellie went on to build geodesic domes and become a professional midwife, as that same unique spirit is already deeply embedded here. A really wonderful album we're happy to help finally reach some receptive ears. The original had no cover art, so we've kept the packaging suitably stark: packaged in a metallic silver offset printed deep blue art paper cover, with paste-on photo art and booklet insert containing more photos, Ellie's original notes from last years vinyl reissue, as well as updated and expanded notes. Edition of 500 copies CD $12 SKU:20301

JADE- DAVE WAITE and MARIANNE SEGAL(JADE) - Paper Flowers ( 60s Psych/Folk ) - Label:LIGTHINING TREE Whilst searching Marianne's archives for the re-issue of Jade's "Fly On Strangewings" album, a whole batch of tapes were uncovered that contained recordings by Dave and Marianne recorded in 1967 and 1969, just prior to forming legendary '70's UK folk rock band Jade. Further searching revealed three fully arranged and orchestrated tracks in the vaults of Jade producer Jon Miller. These tapes, released here as "Paper Flowers", reveal one of the great lost UK folk albums of the 1960's-comparable to Sandy Denny and the Strawbs. "Paper Flowers" is a rare acoustic snapshot of an era known more for it's volume and wild theatrics than for it's gentle rustic melodies-it's the sound of summer days in Hampstead, where the beautiful people wore beautiful clothes, and the world was one of incense, innocence and heavy doses of mystery. Fans of '60's psychedelia, pop or folk will find much to enjoy on this release. Remastered from the only surviving tapes, with fully detailed sleeve notes by Dave and Marian as well as contemporary photographs.

NOLAN, JERRY & THE PROFILERS - The Final Recordings LTD ED EP PINK VINYL (NEW YORK DOLLS) Label:STRAIGHT TO THE TOP 12 " EP recorded with the late NY Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan -We got these straight from GREG ALLEN , he says there are only a few left! recorded with the late NY Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan -We got these straight from GREG ALLEN , he says there are only a few left! “"This final recording from New York Dolls/Heartbreakers drummer Jerry Nolan is an inspired marriage of Nolan’s NYC circa ’76 punchdrunk proto punk panache and stalwart guitarist/vocalist Greg Allen’s switchblade swagger. A last hurrah worthy to the L.A.M.F. legacy." — Alan di Perna (Guitar World, Guitar Aficionado)."These recordings were made in September of ’91, half way between Johnny [Thunders’] death, and Jerry’s own demise. In addition to Greg Allen on guitar and vocals, and bassist Chicago Vin Earnshaw, there are guest appearances by old pals Buddy Bowser on sax, and Walter Lure on guitar. The music is straight ahead Stones/Dolls/Heartbreakers style rock’n’roll. It’s what Jerry loved most and did best." James Marshall - April 2012, NYCQuotes about Greg Allen’s music in general"Greg Allen happens to be quite a musician and he writes good songs...He's good. He's really, really good."- Jerry Nolan, Tee Vee Tunes Records interview, 1991"Greg Allen played with ex-New York Doll Jerry Nolan and his band features some other folks with good bloodlines. OOSTEN, MICHAEL - St (70s hippie psych) HAND SCREENED COVER w 3 bonus tracks.-Label:WAY GONE + LION PRODUCTIONS (USA) Keeping a band together was difficult in the late 1960’s. Tough too, because Michael Oosten was writing songs that veered away from pop-song structures. There was also the relative ease and lack of responsibility required for hauling around a guitar. So, Oosten took off, with a Martin guitar in tow, playing coffeehouses and clubs across the country. By the end of 1973, he was ready to record an LP—five psychedelic folk/rock tracks, ranging from the brightly smiling ‘Sunny Day’ to the epic ‘Hungry Horse Montana,’ where Oost switched seamlessly from Celtic picking to Middle Eastern chord progressions. Oosten filled out his folk/rock/psych sound with the help of a few friends: piano from Tom Hennick on ‘Hey Babe,’ vocals from Jan Reek on ‘Garden,’ and bass from Al Byla on ‘Sunny Day.’ Oosten's wayward vocals puts us in mind of other meandering faves from various eras (Incredible String Band, Perry Leopold, or the Meatpuppets, to name but three), and Oost proves himself a stellar guitarist in an eccentric and percussive mode. Considering the individualistic nature of the album's genesis, no surprise that marketing and publicity for the album was limited. Columbia Records expressed interest in Oosten's music; but after a single meeting with the label, it was clear that the album would be too difficult for the mainstream honchos to market. Oost and friend Lester D'ore (editor of Chicago countercultural paper Seed and designer of the Yippie flag) holed up at D'ore's Wisconsin commune farm to silkscreen each LP jacket by hand. For our deluxe Lion Productions replica edition, they’ve done that again—we've used the original screens for this hand-screened, hand-assembled replica edition. The work of a renegade, ripe for rediscovery.
•Hand silk-screened jackets, using the original screens
•180 gram vinyl w/replica labels + color insert
•Sleeve notes by Michael Oosten

You get a raw basement sound featuring acid guitar, stoned vocals, keyboards and loud drums, similar to early Soft Machine, Pink Floyd at their most free-form phase, or Can. Comes with newly remastered sound, plus an insert with photos and liner notes. LP $15 SKU:16168
OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY - Seemingly Solid Reality ( glam psych ) RED ViNYL - Label:ALIVE After the critically acclaimed glam/psych miasma of 2009's UNIVERSAL MALCONTENTS, and subsequent tours in Europe and the USA, O.C. returned to their analog cave to record Matthew Smith's latest batch of tunes. Throughout SEEMINGLY SOLID REALITY, sweet melodies and harmonies soar over the gnashing of vicious, urban Motor City guitar workouts. Motown-fueled bass and drums throb hypnotically. OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY recently got a lot of love from The NEW P*RNOGRAPHERS who recorded a EP of their songs for Matador titled "Togetherness - The New P*rnographers play Outrageous Cherry" LP $14 SKU:11571

PANDORAS, THE - It's About Time (Psychedelic fuzz goddesses)PURPLE MARBLE VINYL LTD ED OF 100 -Label:VOXX Psychedelic fuzz goddesses The Pandoras were the first, and in many ways the most original, of L.A.'s garage revival bands. They transformed the traditional garage sound of their "Pebbles" favorites into a vehicle for an all-girl band in wild day-glo fashions, openly sexual, assertive and outrageous in a time when girl bands were expected to be more like the demure Bangles. This is their landmark Voxx debut album. LP $16 SKU:16313
PENTHOUSE 5-IT'S ALL MY OWN BIZARRE DREAM + 7"( rare mid sixties TEXAS garage psych) -Label:BREAK-A-WAY Hailing from the Dallas suburb Oak Cliff, The Penthouse 5 had its heyday in 1966-'67, when the band recorded a number of self-penned tunes and released two 45s. Several recordings from 1967 and other, more psychedelic influenced tracks remained unreleased, but demonstrate the musical versatility of the band. In 1966 the group underwent a substantial line-up change when three of the original band members, among them vocalist Rob Graham, left the group. He was replaced by Jon Williams, who had previously been with the By Fives and WordD. Alongside the Penthouse 5 recordings, the rare 7-inches of these closely linked bands are all collected for this release. Additionally an until now completely unknown 5-track '65 acetate rounds up this collection of rare and lost recordings by one of the greatest local '60s bands from the Lone Star State. LP $16 SKU:17266
PEPPERMINT RAINBOW- Will You Be Staying After Sunday (60s BUBBLEGUM Pop ) -Label:REVOLA Baltimore quintet The Peppermint Rainbow scored a U.S. Top 10 hit in 1969 with the super-groovy 'Will You Be Staying After Sunday.' The band cut two further singles both added here but by late '69s it was all over as the sound of love faded from the airwaves. First time on CD in the UK for this bubblegum classic. POPPEES -Pop Goes The Anthology ( Great 70s power pop! ) CLASSIC BLACK VINYL -Label:BOMP The Poppees were one of the creators and the embodiment of what soon came to be known as the "Power Pop" sound of the late 70s. This long overdue anthology finally gives this notable and highly underrated band its due, elegantly chronicling the Poppees short but influential role in the history of the New York New Wave scene of the late 70's. While anchored around their two classic Bomp singles, "If She Cries/Love of The Loved" (the latter track produced by Craig Leon of the Ramones fame), and "Jealousy/She's Got It" (produced by Cyril Jordan of the Flamin' Groovies), "Pop Goes The Anthology" features never before released recordings, including demos, early live recordings, and culminating with a rip-roaring live performance at CBGB. PTARMIGAN - ST (hynotic mystical w inserts and photos) Label:LION LION Hypnotic, mystical, largely instrumental tracks, all based on a complex interplay of recorder, hand drums and acoustic guitar—one of those hidden gems that make life better when you discover them all these years later. Ptarmigan recorded the basic tracks for what would eventually become their only album in 1972. It then took the band’s producer and manager, renowned flautist Paul Horn, more than a year to find a label willing to release such unusual music. Finally, in 1974, Columbia Records released Ptarmigan’s album to critical acclaim, and minimal sales. The music of Ptarmigan is deep and authentic and intimate; it's reflective sounds are well suited to meditating on a landscape, an emotion, a bottle of wine, or maybe while staring at a flickering candle. Sometimes it is free-flowing and jazz-oriented; at other times it has the mystical feel of a shamanistic ceremony, fueled by Eastern-tinged harmonies. But in the end, this album is about the sea: Ptarmigan was, after all, from Vancouver Island, and the musicians were well-versed in the contradictory moods of the surrounding ocean. Rated by many as the best "folk/progressive" and/or "folk/psych" album ever made. As one contemporary review said, this is "music from musicians, for musicians, late-at-night, last joint music." Our Lion Productions reissue comes with a massive fold-out insert which includes lyrics, liner notes from the band, and a multitude of photos and historical mementos.•Rated by many as the best "folk/progressive" and/or "folk/psych" album ever made•From the master tapes •Limited second press of 300x copies •Huge insert comes with lyrics, liner notes from the band, and more LP $19 SKU:16108

PUSSY - Invasion (POST JERUSALEM 72/73) Label:LION iVnyl debut for post-Jerusalem material from 1972/73! Jerusalem is well known among 70s hard rock enthusiasts thanks to their stone-cold classic 1972 Deram label debut album. After that record was released, the band made the bold decision to not to continue with the same name—for them, Jerusalem was a one-off moment in time and could never be recreated. And so, three-fifths of Jerusalem (founding members Paul Dean and Ray Sparrow along with Bob Cooke), became Pussy. The new band were still managed and produced by Ian Gillan (Deep Purple). Pussy recorded and released one single on Deram and then went on to record tracks between 1972 and 1973 with Brian Goff taking over for Bob Cooke on guitar, for their debut album—which was never released. QUICK, BILL - MARAVILLOSA GENTE(70s obscure psych gem)Label:TIME LAG Pressed on 180 gm audiophile grade vinyl, and limited to 1000 copiesDeluxe LP reissue of amazing little know gem (entitled “beautiful people”) from 1972. Born in Miami to an American father and Venezuelan mother, Bill split the USA and went to Madrid, Spain in the early 70s. Once there, he landed a recording deal with famous producer Alain Milhaud for the Explosion label, and set to work on this, his sole album. Sessions included an impressive cast of players in the studio, including Salvador Dominguez & Chema Pellicó (from Cerebrum), Jess Lam (Jess & James), and Frank Rojas (Sangre). One of the album’s real hidden treasures, though, was the assistance of unknown Texan Mark Gottschall, who co-wrote the title track and adds perfect vocal harmonies as well a second acoustic guitar. The album has an air of mystical psychedelia, and there's a real sun-blasted quality to it all that makes you want to crank the volume. The lyrics (all in English) feel deeply sincere; when combined with Quick’s unique voice, unusual accent, and loose delivery, it makes for one hell of a cool record. Reissued here for the first time, with the collaboration of original producer Milhaud. packaged in a heavy weight gloss coated exact reproduction of the original cover, including the original double sided insert, as well as a huge new full color foldout insert which reproduces at nearly full size the Brazilian version of the album art. Extensive notes by Salvador Dominguez, Mark Gottschall, and Alex Carretero (Guerssen Records, Spain). Art includes rare picture sleeves 45s, promotional inserts, lyric sheets; the LP labels reproduce the original psychedelic full color Explosion label art. LP $15 SKU:19296
RABBLE RABBLE- Composure (PSYCH space trip) SWIRL VINYL -Label:EYE VYBE RECORDS (USA) Rabble Rabble spent nearly a decade building a heavy reputation for raucous basement shows where any attendee will inevitably leave the room drenched in beer and twice as drunk as before. The addition of Kieterang See Jru (also of Strychnine, Plastic Crimewave Syndicate) in 2013 effectively spiked the band's punch with a healthy dose of LSD, and soon their live shows became full on psychedelic space trips, infusing the heavy, reckless garage punk they built themselves on with krautrock rhythms, proto metal edge and a dash of Smashing Pumpkin-esque guitar leads. Composure is a great finale to the trip that was Rabble Rabble. Limited to 300 copies, 12 min/side; plays at 45 rpm; includes lyric insert; pressed on random marble swirl vinyl by gotta groove records. LP $10 SKU:19484

RAINBOW PRESS- There's a War On (68 psych insert with liners ) SALE -Label:OUT-SIDER (Spain) Out-Sider presents the first legit reissue of There's a War On by The Rainbow Press, a cool US '68 psychedelic concept album with all the right moves: solid songwriting, refreshing harmonies, studio effects, organ, fuzz guitar, electric piano, sunshine/baroque touches -- think The Rainy Daze, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Doors. The Rainbow Press evolved from The Continental Divide, a college band from New York containing members from two previous British invasion groups: The Group and The Specs. They were Bill Yergin on drums, Dave Troup on bass, Larry Milton on electric piano and 12-string guitar, Marc Ellis on guitar, Charlie Osborne on organ, and Joe Groff on vocals. All the members sang vocal harmonies and the twin electric piano/organ action gave the band an unusual and cool sound. In 1968, Audio Fidelity approached them and a contract was secured. The band changed their name to the more groovy-sounding The Rainbow Press and sessions for their first album started at Radio City in New York. There's a War On saw the light in 1968 on the Mr. G label (the "hip" branch of Audio Fidelity). It's hard to believe this perfectly recorded psychedelic beauty was made by college students! Remastered sound; includes insert with liner notes telling the band's story for the first time. LP $15 SKU:16564
RATIONALS--10” Temptation Bout to get Me ( 60s Detroit ) SAALE -Label:TOTAL ENERGY LAST COPIES When serious collectors compose lists of the top shoulda-been-bigger bands of the '60s, the Rationals are often among them. Coming out of the same Ann Arbor, MI scene that gave birth to the MC5 and the Stooges, the group's forte was a sort of garageish take on blue-eyed soul, built around the fine RB-hued vocals of frontman Scott Morgan. Their mid-'60s singles, however, didn't break in many areas outside of Michigan (where they had some big local hits), and by the time they got to record an album, they had long passed their peak.the Rationals actually predated the MC5/Stooges by quite some time, both chronologically and stylistically. When they began recording for the local A2 label in 1965, they were, like many garage bands, heavily influenced by the British Invasion, although they gave their material a more soulful flavor than most similar units. "Gave My Love" was a chart-topper in Ann Arbor (and a hit in Detroit), as was a follow-up single of "Respect" (which predated Aretha Franklin's version). Picked up for national distribution by Cameo/Parkway, it nudged into the lowest regions of the national charts as well.” LP $5 SKU:4220
RATLIFF,K.S & BLACK MAGIC-FEAR OF THE NIGHT (RARE psych garage private press 1982)-Label:SUBLIMINAL SOUNDS (SWEDEN) First time limited edition vinyl reissue of an extremely rare and unique teenage real people psych garage private press album from 1982. It's so damn off the radar, rare and elusive that it even eluded the writers of the 'Acid Archives' book. This music has the direct and real emotional honesty of Kenneth Higney crossed with the ominous sci-fi atmosphere of Marcus, boiled down to the essentials, merging a psyched up garage sense of teen discovery with music so uncontrived it naturally delivers hook after hook. LP $22 SKU:19924
RAUNCH - Total Raunch (savage '60s heavy fuzz )-Label:BREAK A WAY Raunch from Ossining, N.Y. were one of the countless mid-'60s groups born into a healthy local garage scene, living the classic story of local bands for two years and then almost forgotten for the last five decades. In the short time of their existence, the Raunch released a legendary 7-inch, made it with one track onto the collectable "Battle Of The Bands" LP on the regionally active Ren-Vell Label and in 1967 recorded another until now unreleased pair of tracks. Both sides of their sole single on Bazaar Records, are good examples of classic '60s garagepunk. 'A Little While Back' is a crude heavy fuzz punker with a blistering guitar solo perfectly backed with 'I Say You're Wrong', a tough n moody song with the classic garage girl-treats-boy-bad lyrics on the flip. While both sides of the 7-inch were group originals written by Sandy Katz, their LP contribution for Ren-Vell was a cover of Paul Revere & The Raiders' 'Hungry', played by the group in their unique "raunchy style" of course. Even more unique is the treatment the boys gave to their unreleased recordings of 'Hey Joe' and 'Tobacco Road'. Again recorded at Ren-Vell in 1967, both covers are unbelievable ultra heavy fuzz killers with a wild brand of slashing and uncompromising guitar playing. Despite losing several battle of the bands contests, their ultimate victory comes in the shape of this one-sided Break-A-Way release. Five tracks with enough excitement and power for two LP sides, all of which are '60s savage garage punk and, once heard, unforgettable. LP $12 SKU:16485

CONFLICT -The Ungovernable Force (1986 punkers) -Label:MORTARHATE Conflict are notorious for their uncompromising stance, willing use of force, ultra-veganism and above all the lead singer Colin Jerwood and his seemingly limitless energy. This release is perhaps Conflict's finest hour, combining both their positive DIY message and some excellent anarcho-punk beats. Driving guitars, rapid drumming and meaningful vocals make this an excellent, if hard release. Some absolutely brilliant songs on here, including the self-titled track ‘The Ungovernable Force,’ the self-deprecating ‘Ungovernable Farce,’ the hilarious ‘Force or Service’ and blistering and loud ‘The Day Before.’ Not forgetting the final two closing tracks, ‘This is the ALF’ which is slowed down but very powerful and ‘To Be Continued,’ with the female vocalist asking the eternal question, "Do I stand alone in my search for freedom?" Truly revolutionary stuff. CD $10 SKU:20173
CONGREGACION - Viene (one of the pinnacles of Latin American folk/psych)- Label:LION “An undeniably beautiful gem from the early-70s Chilean underground, Congregacion's only album Viene is a rarely heard masterpiece, full of delicate atmospherics and dreamy textures. Congregacion were a group spearheaded by the apparently mythical figure of Antonio Smith, whose progressive and hopeful lyrics (their significant political, philosophical and religious content made them a real "celebration of life"), earned him the enmity of the Chilean military dictatorship; he was forced to flee the country and Viene (plus a rare single), proved to be Congregacion's only releases. Musically, they crafted ballads in an Andean style with ethnic atmospheres—one could say they made a kind of
psychedelic folk with progressive leanings. Had things worked out differently, this album might be held in as high regard as comparable masterpieces like say, Milton Nascimento's Clube de Esquina, for example, although Congregacion is far more in a psychedelic vein. The music of Congregacion has an evocative sense of open space, using natural sounds and acoustic textures to foreground Smith's soaring melodies. The results are incredibly beautiful. Like another album, Bulent's Benimle Oynar Misin, it has just the perfect balance plaintively sorrowful acid/folk and gently arranged pop (those Beatles-esque harmonics are impossible to overlook). This is a highly recommended album that is surely one of the pinnacles of Latin American folk/psych CD $10 SKU:9667
CONTRALUZ- Americanos (1973 Argentine prog)-Label:FONOCAL There seems to be a tendency in music to label anything that has a flute in it as folk music, and anything that has both flute and keyboards as progressive folk. And of course anything with flute and heavy guitar is automatically branded “Jethro Tull-esque.”That said, in the case of the debut album from Contraluz (1973) there are places where it sounds like folk music, places where it sounds progressive, and places where it sounds like a South American Jethro Tull. Or, as the band said, “We started off as a kind of imitation of Jethro Tull, but throughout the years we evolved towards a symphonic rock influenced by local folk music such as the ‘carnavalito’ (which in fact comes from Bolivia) with a touch of ‘milonga’ or even ‘tango’ every now and then.” CD $15 SKU:20332
COSMIC DEAD-PSYCH IS DEAD (Scottish good vibes rock) -Label:RIOT SEASON Formed in 2010, The Cosmic Dead are a quartet from Glasgow, Scotland who share their music through good vibes and better vibrations. COSMIC DEALER - Crystallization (psychedelic hard-rock )(2CD) - Label:PSEUDONYM RECORDS (NETHERLANDS) Expanded version with unreleased demos, rare photos and liners by Mike Stax. an outstanding and rare masterpiece for all psych collectors and for sure one of the best Euro-Underground rock albums of the 70s. D.R. HOOKER-The Truth ( 1972 psych Doors style German press ) - Label:VEALS & GEEKS (Belgium) Genuine reissue of D.R. Hooker's The Truth (1972) from the original audio sources; new analog transfer with improved mastering. "It's a miracle any copies of this privately pressed album survived -- but be thankful it did, for here is an individual vision. Some people worry about when we'll run out of oil. A rather smaller proportion of us worry about when we'll run out of discoverable, deep-end thrills like this. There is just no way in the world items like Donald Hooker's 40-year-old privately pressed LP should even exist as a thing -- it more than likely only ran to about 99 copies in its original format, so how the hell did even one of those survive to create these new digital and analogue versions decades later? Connecticut-based Hooker -- a tall, slim hippy with a history of substance abuse -- was much given to wearing the sort of austere robe he sports on the sleeve, a fairly outré move even then. In early 1972 he hired a gang of local scene musicians to flesh out his wonderful songs and after a few brief rehearsals the band began recording. As soon as they were done they split -- some never even heard the finished album, and what a treat they missed. Hooker's arrangements are truly beautiful; a simple, swinging pop song like Weather Girl exists somewhere betweenthe Doors and Curtis Mayfield, whereas The Bible ('If they're knocking the Bible, be sure they are bent/ Just see and you'll understand the book is heaven sent') has the propulsive drive of a pained George Harrisonballad crushed up against some of Neil Young's freeform, string-banging joy. Then there's The Sea, with its rolling religious allegories and the remarkable Free which marries a growling hard rock throb to a vampirically groovy synth line. Hooker's masterpiece is Forge Your Own Chains, which is part conga-led, lounge-funk soul and part, questing psychedelic dream. To think this entirely individual worldview would have once languished, unloved, in a series of under-the-racks cutout bins. And how much more magic like this is there out there?" --Rob Fitzpatrick, "The 101 strangest records on Spotify: DR Hooker -- The Truth," The Guardian, April 24, 2013 CD $10 SKU:17925
