BEATSTALKERS-SCOTLAND'S NO. 1 BEAT GROUP(63-69 recordings pop psych)Label:SOMMER Complete recordings from 1963 to 1969 by this legendary band from Glasgow. Fabulous mod-beat, wild R&B and pop-psych, including all their 7" sides for Decca and CBS plus early demos. Formed in Glasgow in 1962 during the early beat boom by Alan Mair and Eddie Campbell, their line-up also included Davie Lennox, Tudge' Williamson (replaced by Jeff Allen) and Ronnie Smith. Playing an authentic brand of rhythm 'n' blues and soul covers, they soon took the city by storm and were famous for their live shows, attracting hordes of screaming girls and young fans. Sure, The Saints and Radio Birdman stayed together longer and released a slew of fine albums during the punk era but it was the Coloured Balls who pioneered the proto punk sound earlier in the decade. LEVEE CAMP MOAN-ST (1969 blues based rock)-Label:SOMMER This is the first, legitimate vinyl reissue of this extraordinarily rare album. Includes insert with rare photos and full band history by Pete Sarfas.In 1969 Bracknell based blues rock outfit Levee Camp Moan released what was destined to become one of the most sought after UK private pressings of the period. Issued on the County Recording Services label (SVVS 132), a small run of discs was pressed up and sold locally at gigs as well as being handed out to friends. Housed in an obligatory custom built sleeve that had a snapshot of the group pasted onto the front, this LP marked out their status as one of the most exciting bands to emerge out of the thriving local underground scene in the Bracknell Delta. The group had taken their name from the old blues number and the band members, manager and assorted roadies took up residence in a local farmhouse known as Peacock Farm. It was there that LCM would rehearse into the small hours thumping out a mixture of blues standards as well as their own compositions until they had become a tight unit ready to 'take on the world'. Influences ranged from the urban blues of Otis Rush, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells to Muddy Waters, Skip James and beyond. The more or less contemporary white blues of the time, Canned Heat, Savoy Brown and Paul Butterfield also served as a major source of inspiration. From their humble roots LCM quickly built up a following on the British Blues circuit, frequenting the likes of the Marquee, Crawdaddy, Klooks Kleek, Eel Pie Island and Rikki Tik club. On the college circuit they toured extensively with Chickenshack, Canned Heat and Muddy Waters with performances being of a high enough standard to generate record company interest. Unable to secure a record deal, they had no other choice but to do it themselves. And so it was in the winter months of early '69 that LCM entered Virgin Sound in nearby Windsor to lay down eight tracks recorded on a four track machine. At the time of its creation the term private pressing would have had little or no relevance in musical circles and the significant thing to remember is that in such cases there is no record company interference and what the band was able to produce under these conditions was the archetypal private pressing, raw, under produced and thrillingly primitive. The project successfully captured the spirit and aggression of an exciting new band and the original artefact is now a zeitgeist of that remarkable era. After Levee Camp Moan, Ian Campbell went on to carve out a busy musical career performing with, amongst many others, the Nashville Teens, Arthur Brown's band and Mungo Jerry. Bassist Dave Stubbs played with a host of notables including gigs in Eric Clapton's band and lengthy tours with Uli Jon Roth (ex Scorpions). LINDAHL, PETER- PSYCHEDELIC SWEDEN (60s 70s style) Label:TRANSUBSTANS Peter Lindahls musical journey: "It was back in the early seventies, in those happy days of experimentation when everyone was jamming together at home or at open air festivals that things really took off for me, in the sense of my being creative. It was the age of hippies, of freaking out and of radical movements intending to change society over night. But with me it was just a lot of fun and fooling around with every way of expression I could find, among these the most vital ones being art and music." This is how Peter Lindahl describes his artistic upbringing during the feverish seventies. Many years later , in the nineties Peter has gained recognition with his project In the Labyrinth. The material presented on this CD holds almost no similarity to In the Labyrinth and is more of a compilation of Peters musical experimentation from themid-sixties to the late nineties, although most of the tracks were recorded during the early seventies. "Psychedelic Sweden" is a musical reflection of when Peter had joined up with the alternative community which was growing rapidly in Sweden in the late sixties and he started to take in more psychedelic stuff, his favourites at the time being Tyrannosaurus Rex, Pugh Rogefeldt and Pink Floyd. He laid out his strange vision on a self-released double-album Apache/Inca (1972), which would become a sought-after artifact of the psychedelic era. Success came easily for Craig Smith. In 1963, right out of high school he became a cast member of the popular Andy Williams TV show as one of the Good Time Singers, a wholesome folk ensemble that recorded for Capitol Records. Next he landed one of the lead parts in a new TV show, The Happeners, about a Greenwich Village folk group. But when the TV pilot was not picked up, he set out on his own musical path with the folk-rock duo Chris & Craig and then the more psychedelic Penny Arkade, produced and managed by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. Throughout this period Smith was constantly writing songs, some of which were recorded by other artists, including the Monkees ("Salesman"), Andy Williams ("Holly", "Christmas Holiday"), the Robbs ("Rapid Transit"), and Glen Campbell ("Country Girl"). But soon afterwards, his life took a dark, terrifying turn. Turning to LSD and Eastern mysticism he journeyed through Asia along the hippie trail where he was brutally attacked, raped, and left for dead. He was never the same again. As Maitreya Kali, he self-released the now legendary Apache and Inca albums in 1972 before disappearing into the shadows. He spent much of the 1970s in prison or in mental institutions before eventually drifting into homelessness on the streets of Hollywood. He died in his sleeping bag in North Hollywood Park in March 2012. Craig's older brother Gary contacted Stax with a trove of unreleased music. The best of those songs are presented on Love Is Our Existence. Professionally recorded in Los Angeles studios between 1966 and 1971, these previously unheard songs reveal a singer and songwriter of breathtaking depth and talent.
